Interesting website at http://beta.booklamp.org which aims at finding you books to read by analysing the text of books you already like, in much the same way as Pandora does with music. It's in beta test at the moment, and has only a limited selection of books to analyse, but people are encouraged to give it a go and say what they think on the forums.

oh, sounds great ! i loved pandora, i was so sad the day they limited access to the US residents... if Book Lamp works as well as Pandora it should be a lot of fun.

Greatest idea ever. Google should buy Pandora and booklamp, create some kind of relationship database? Amazon does this with what other people are buying option.

This is pretty neat, but I wish it had a better selection. If you want to see something somewhat amusing, take a look at what book most closely resembles George Orwell's 1984

i think that's actually in the dictionary, as an example next to the definition of the word "irony".

Does it do anything that Librarything doesn't?

www.pandora.com (sadly it no longer works outside the USA)

It doesn't do very much at all at the moment, since it's more a proof of concept than a working thing. But it makes book recommendations based on computer analysis of text rather than personal opinion, so it does the same thing differently, really.

For those who didn't sign up to see...

George Orwell's 1984 most closely resembles:

USA Patriot Act by The United States Congress

Too funny! :D

So I did have the correct URL. But it's the Music Genome Project. Nothing to do with books at all.

it's the same concept of recommendations based on a computerised analysis of the content of things you already like. booklamp is to books as pandora is to music.

i have a question... I watched the video on the site ; when he says "a gooey interface" is he talking about a GUI ??? and if yes, is that *really* pronounced "gooey" ????

It's not exactly the same.
Music Genome Project: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Genome_Project

To create a song's genome, it is analyzed by a musician in a process that takes 20 to 30 minutes per song. Ten percent of songs are analyzed by more than one technician to ensure conformity with the standards, i.e., reliability.

oh sorry, my mistake. i was thinking of the automated recommendations based on the result of the analysis (genome), and comparing genomes between themselves ; i forgot about the preceding human intervention :o

Where I worked everyone pronounced GUI as gooey so that is how I've always said it. I think it sounds better than G-U-I.

I've got into Pandora by changing my proxy but it's a bit of a hassle (damn copyright laws).

Nothing special really. We've got a service like that here in Poland for over 7 years - it's BiblioNETka (http://www.biblionetka.pl/)

EDIT: Or wait, what do they mean by the 'computerised' matching? How do they achieve this? By percentage of words/phrases matched?

I tried it a bit, but I still much prefer Literature Map (http://www.literature-map.com/) (which is is a part of gnooks, which is a
part of gnod, which is a project of marek gibney)

I use it sometimes when I want to find new authors, and its "cloudy" interface is the right thing for me.

Watch the movie that is on the site. It explains everything. Remember this is a concept site. It is an idea looking for funding, not a site that is usable today.
