HarryT 02-29-2008, 08:32 AM Bit of a silly questions but can any one tell me if the English dictionaries on Mobipocket.com are British or US english or both? Look at the descriptions of them - it will tell you. The one I use (Chambers 10ed.) is British English, but one can buy things like Webster's Collegiate, which is American English. splat 02-29-2008, 04:25 PM Look at the descriptions of them - it will tell you. Not that I can see. Taking the following as examples Collins Unabridged English (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eBooks/eBookDetails.asp?BookID=65018) Concise Oxford English Dictionary (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eBooks/eBookDetails.asp?BookID=19122) Merriam Webster VestPocket Dictionary (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eBooks/eBookDetails.asp?BookID=3152) Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eBooks/eBookDetails.asp?BookID=8823) What I'm looking for is a British english dictionary, I'd assume the OED and Collins would be British but have no idea if they do US versions too (which would be more likely sold from the US based mobipocket), the descriptions do not give any hints wallcraft 02-29-2008, 09:14 PM The standard Oxford dictionaries are British, and for US versions they do have the New Oxford American Dictionary (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eBooks/eBookDetails.asp?BookID=58588) (which is included on the Kindle - I wonder what Amazon will replace this with on their British Kindle when it comes out). The Collins and Oxford dictionaries (except those which have "American" in their name) are British; the ones with "Webster" in their name are American. These are all extremely well-known dictionaries. MobiPocket aren't American-based, by the way; they're French. They are owned by Amazon, but that's a very recent development; they've been around for many, many years. |
