View Full Version : Riddle me this ....
NatCh 02-21-2008, 10:03 AM Years ago, I used to write my own riddles, and inflict -- I mean, share them with interested friends. Anyone interested here?
By way of a sample:
Many people, many places.
Always right and always wrong.
Truly shallow, seeming deep.
What am I?
zelda_pinwheel 02-21-2008, 10:07 AM yes please !! i love riddles. is the answer to the first one a mirror ?
NatCh 02-21-2008, 01:09 PM Well butter my backside and call me a biscuit! You got it in one, zelda_pinwheel!
You didn't go to High-School with me did you? :inquisiti That's when I was last tossing that one around. :D
NatCh 02-21-2008, 01:11 PM Allrighty then, how about this one?
Bald of head, but never cold.
Hard when young, but soft when old.
I cannot live with my food.
Majestic in movement, in eating crude.
What am I?
BruceW 02-21-2008, 01:30 PM A buzzard?
NatCh 02-21-2008, 02:26 PM A good guess, but nope, not a buzzard. :)
MMascaro 02-21-2008, 02:42 PM Bald Eagle
NatCh 02-21-2008, 02:45 PM Wow, either these aren't as obscure as I thought they were, or you lot are really good at this.
Yes, a bald eagle is the answer to that one.
Anybody else got one?
MMascaro 02-21-2008, 03:05 PM I don't know but I think we read alot.
NatCh 02-21-2008, 03:07 PM I don't know but I think we read alot.Is that a riddle? Reminds me of the infamous "What have I got in my pocket?" riddle. :)
zelda_pinwheel 02-21-2008, 03:10 PM Is that a riddle? Reminds me of the infamous "What have I got in my pocket?" riddle. :)
why yes that *is* a reader in my pocket, but i'm also glad to see you...
Sparrow 02-21-2008, 03:23 PM One of my favourite childhood riddles was:
What can go up a chimney down, but can't go down a chimney up?
badgoodDeb 02-21-2008, 03:52 PM That would be an umbrella.
And, the desired answer to "what have I got in my pocket" (I think) is "My Preciousssss". (a ring)
Sparrow 02-21-2008, 03:57 PM That would be an umbrella.
Correct - well done!
NatCh 02-21-2008, 05:03 PM Okay, I don't remember any more of the dozen or so I wrote years ago, so here's one I came up with today. Note that I can't and don't promise to come up with original riddles on a daily basis. :D
Without toes, I yet wear shoes.
My name's one of power and play.
I am most stable, a thing out of fable,
And also of quarter and dray.
What am I?
JSWolf 02-21-2008, 05:05 PM Natch is a horse.
A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mr. Ed.
Go right to the source and ask the horse
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mr. Ed.
People yakkity yak a streak and waste your time of day
But Mister Ed will never speak unless he has something to say.
A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?
Well listen to this. I am Mister Ed.
("Mister Ed" by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston)
NatCh 02-21-2008, 05:06 PM Obviously I'm making these too easy! :D
Was there anything specific that gave it away?
Nate the great 02-21-2008, 05:09 PM The horse one wasn't that hard. The bald eagle one was so easy that I assumed bald eagle wasn't the answer.
JSWolf 02-21-2008, 05:09 PM Obviously I'm making these too easy! :D
Was there anything specific that gave it away?
yep, the words.
NatCh 02-21-2008, 05:11 PM Ah, yes. Next time: no words!
NatCh 02-21-2008, 05:15 PM How about this one, then?
All black and all white.
All dark and all light.
Everywhere and nowhere.
What am I?
(this is the last one I've got today -- enough of it came back to me to try it)
IceHand 02-22-2008, 05:07 AM The sky?
MMascaro 02-22-2008, 05:27 AM OK lets see how many different answers we can find for this old one.
When is a raven like a writing desk?
Nate the great 02-22-2008, 06:40 AM OK lets see how many different answers we can find for this old one.
When is a raven like a writing desk?
Because neither can whistle?
vivaldirules 02-22-2008, 07:25 AM OK lets see how many different answers we can find for this old one.
When is a raven like a writing desk?
Nevermore.
MMascaro 02-22-2008, 07:32 AM There are three good answers....
vivaldirules 02-22-2008, 07:35 AM OK lets see how many different answers we can find for this old one.
When is a raven like a writing desk?
When Nate upends the ink well all over the desk while writing riddles?
Nate the great 02-22-2008, 08:24 AM The original answer:
Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front.
Alternate answers:
Because Poe wrote on both.
Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.
Because it slopes with a flap.
Because they both come with inky quills.
Isn't Google wonderful.
NatCh 02-22-2008, 09:43 AM The sky?Nope, not the sky.
Finally, I've found one that wasn't answered in the first ten minutes! :yahoo:
vivaldirules 02-22-2008, 10:11 AM How about this one, then?
All black and all white.
All dark and all light.
Everywhere and nowhere.
What am I?
(this is the last one I've got today -- enough of it came back to me to try it)
The Washington Post? The ether? Or how about dark energy, whatever that is? Or maybe the darkness 'tween my ears? You got me!
NatCh 02-22-2008, 10:14 AM
vivaldirules 02-22-2008, 10:42 AM
Boogers! No, that's an exclamation not an answer.
How about a Kindle with broken screen?
NatCh 02-22-2008, 11:33 AM Not even close.
vivaldirules 02-22-2008, 05:05 PM Not even close.
I need some help here, folks. We can't let him get away with this! It's probably something simple like.....what?
badgoodDeb 02-22-2008, 05:26 PM How about this one, then?
All black and all white.
All dark and all light.
Everywhere and nowhere.
What am I?
Nothing?
(I recall that being an answer to a different riddle, so it's worth trying.)
NatCh 02-22-2008, 11:43 PM Nothing?Well, nuts.
At least that one took more than a full day. :D
Sparrow 02-23-2008, 04:24 AM What is always wicked, yet often seen in church?
MMascaro 02-23-2008, 05:31 AM sinners
Sparrow 02-23-2008, 05:34 AM sinners
Good try; but not sinners. :)
JSWolf 02-23-2008, 07:28 AM What is always wicked, yet often seen in church?
The Priest
Sparrow 02-23-2008, 07:59 AM The Priest
 Nope, it's not a person.
xianfox 02-23-2008, 08:10 AM What is always wicked, yet often seen in church?
Candles
Sparrow 02-23-2008, 08:17 AM Candles
Bingo!!!
Candles always have wicks and they're often seen in church.
Well done!!
xianfox 02-23-2008, 08:34 AM My turn. Warning, I usually suck at creating riddles, but I've had this one for a while with no one to try it out on.
I am very, very smart but alone I am dumb.
I have many names yet go by only one.
I am serious, I am fun.
I weigh scant ounces or many, many tons.
What am I?
JSWolf 02-23-2008, 08:36 AM  Nope, it's not a person.
I still think my answer fits. Well it does if you live in Boston.
Sparrow 02-23-2008, 08:53 AM I am very, very smart but alone I am dumb...
Are you a 'speak your weight' machine?
xianfox 02-23-2008, 08:56 AM Are you a 'speak your weight' machine?
Nope.
zelda_pinwheel 02-23-2008, 08:57 AM My turn. Warning, I usually suck at creating riddles, but I've had this one for a while with no one to try it out on.

zelda_pinwheel 02-23-2008, 09:00 AM No, but good answer. I told you I wasn't good at making riddles.

xianfox 02-23-2008, 09:42 AM A book?
Ohhh. So very close.
zelda_pinwheel 02-23-2008, 09:46 AM a library ??
xianfox 02-23-2008, 09:48 AM a library ??
That's it.
I now retire my meager riddle creation skillz.
badgoodDeb 02-23-2008, 10:25 AM I thought maybe it was "an ebook reader" ..... (which is itself a library:)
vivaldirules 02-23-2008, 10:34 AM I've tried to remember one. Pretty easy.
Once I saw a pair of hills,
As if walking far away,
They say they carry water,
Though water’s far away.
zelda_pinwheel 02-23-2008, 11:11 AM a camel ?
vivaldirules 02-23-2008, 11:23 AM a camel ?
Yes. Way too easy. Here's another easy one - not a riddle but a joke:
If you're stuck in the desert, what would you eat for lunch?
NatCh 02-23-2008, 11:25 AM Here's another new one:
Door, church, computer, field:
what am I?
NatCh 02-23-2008, 11:25 AM Yes. Way too easy. Here's another easy one - not a riddle but a joke:

vivaldirules 02-23-2008, 11:27 AM All the sand which is there. :D
Well done. I remember laughing my head off at that one. Okay, I was ten.
NatCh 02-23-2008, 11:30 AM Well done. I remember laughing my head off at that one. Okay, I was ten.Fortunately, I'm only about 13, mentally speaking. :tongue3:
vivaldirules 02-23-2008, 11:31 AM Here's another new one:
Door, church, computer, field:

A knob, quite obviously. ;)
Nate the great 02-23-2008, 12:04 PM Here's another new one:

Bob Russell 02-24-2008, 08:03 AM One of those previous riddles reminded me of this one...
What is greater than God, More evil than the devil, The poor have it, The rich need it, And if you eat it, you'll die?
Same answer...
TallMomof2 02-24-2008, 10:12 AM Nothing?
NatCh 02-24-2008, 03:21 PM Nothing.
