First try doing a RESET. But if that doesn't work, write Bookeen.

JSWolf 02-20-2008, 07:18 PM derek do you think it would help if NEAB wrote to Bookeen for permission to help with firmware issues like this?
Chrismac 02-21-2008, 12:59 AM Hi everybody,
Thank you for your help!
I did several rests, I plugged out the battery but I still have the squares. I can't even turn the Cybook off!
I've written to Booken, but no reply for now...
As I bought the Cybook on eBay, I'm not sure they will agree to help me.
Once again, many thanks.
tribble 02-21-2008, 01:43 AM I sent you a PM. I hope this helps.
Chrismac 02-21-2008, 01:51 AM Hi Tribble,
Thank you for your help in this matter!
Cheers
Chrismac 02-21-2008, 02:03 AM Unfortunately it has not work : after the boot logo, while pressing the enter key, I still have the squares....
Perhaps would it work if I manually place the system files with the windows explorer??
Thanks

That should work.
tribble 02-21-2008, 04:12 AM send me an email to fk@justread.de and i will send you the system files.
tompe 02-21-2008, 05:03 AM It happens very often that people loose the system files. Why not just put them on a web site and created a sticky thread that gives the address to it. Or just put the as an attachment here?
HarryT 02-21-2008, 05:08 AM Must admit that one of the first things I did when I got my CyBook was to make a copy of the system files. It immediately struck me how easy it would be to accidentally delete them!
tribble 02-21-2008, 07:07 AM In this video, you can see, how the reflash procedure must look like:
http://www.justread.de/videos/cybook-reflash.html
@tompe: Bookeen doesn't want everyone to have access to those files. It would be no problem, if their support were better. But i hope that will change soon. And until then i try my best to help out ;)
delphidb96 02-21-2008, 10:36 AM tribble,
Would you mind it if we put this flash video up at NAEB? Enough people have this problem that this would make a great resource.
Derek

I can but ask... and I will do so.

It's just that I feel people would get a faster response with the help they need from NAEB then Bookeen given what I have been reading.

I did not read anything when I bought the Cybook that prevent me from putting the files on a web site. I meant the files that are in the system directory. If I have missed something please point that out.
Chrismac 02-21-2008, 12:03 PM Back home I've tried flashing again with the Kernel thing but impossible... Perhaps some systme files are needed for flashing??
I'm now looking for the files themselves to manually drag them in the now empty:smack:system folder....

Do you still need the system files Chrismac?

Feel free to do so. Would you like to have the flv file? Or you can just link to my page.
I asked permission of bookeen to help people out with reflashing. They said i could help as long as the information exchanged stays confidential. So i assume they will allow you to do that aswell.

I am really curious if you can copyright binary code. But even iif it is copyrighted it can only be used by people having a Cybook so I do not really see how it could be a problem. People are sending the files wo whoever asks withou checking that they own a Cybook.
But I think it is a problem with all messages here about needing system files and the replies and the replies to the replies. And every such message is bad publicity for Bookeen because they are here because they do not answer their email in a timely manner.
NatCh 02-21-2008, 02:38 PM I am really curious if you can copyright binary code.Sure you can! It's still just characters, even if they're all 1 and 0.
Copyrighting software is an extremely common practice, especially for commercial enterprises.
But even iif it is copyrighted it can inly be uses by people having a Cybook so I do nor really see how it could be a problem. People are sending the files wo whoever asks withou checking that they own a Cybook.Conceptually, I'd agree with you, but the operative bit (you should pardon the pun) here is whether or not any lawyer types would take exception to it. You or I or any other individual passing the code along is unlikely to draw their ire, or even their notice, but the forum may be a different matter. They do read us, and have even posted here occasionally.
tompe 02-21-2008, 03:42 PM Sure you can! It's still just characters, even if they're all 1 and 0.
Well, you cannot copyright a random sequence of numbers. There must be some creativity and originality involved. And a program you cannot use or read or an encrypted file cannot be copyrighted. The decrypted file can be copyrighted.
tribble 02-21-2008, 04:38 PM There are just 10 kind of people. Those who understand binary and those who dont. ;)

Yes, just send me the flv through my personal email address, dabenner - ATiver - comcast - DOTiver - net. Yep, I munged it a bit to throw off the email miners.
Thanx. I figure Bookeen will allow us the same privilege.
Derek

The big issue, I believe, is the custom mods done to the OS by Bookeen - as well as the fact that the ebook reader app (Boo Reader) is all proprietary. I don't mind Bookeen keeping the apps proprietary, but I'd really like to see the source for the underlying OS.

We are talking about the sytem files. I though the OS and programs was in the firmware. On the other hand icudt36l.dat is rather large so it can contain things. As had been pointed out before they are probably required to distribute the sorce for the GPL part of the OS and for the modification they have done that became GPL:ed.

If it were random then it wouldn't be code.
tompe 02-21-2008, 05:01 PM If it were random then it wouldn't be code.
If you cannot decode them they do not satisfy the creativity or originality requirement. Even if you can decode them it is the decoded form that is problematic and not the meaningless sequence of characters.
NatCh 02-21-2008, 05:07 PM  Convince the lawyers of that, and I'll have no more concerns on the matter. :nice:

Sure I get your point and can sympatise with it. Unfortunately there is no easy way to find out what holds. I sometime tries to ask these kind of questions of a friend that works as a prosecutor but the answer is always that it is complicated and other persons are experts in this area or that a case with this question has never been at court so nobody know what holds.

That's a part of IBM's International Component for Unicode (http://www.icu-project.org/). Probably all the codepage tables.
Chrismac 02-23-2008, 07:28 AM Hi everybody,
Thanks to Trible:thanks: the system is now fixed but it seems there are troubles with the enter button which is not working properly (that's why I wasn't able to flash firmware with the kernel thing...).
I'm trying to get contact with Booken support, do someone know if this malfunction is easy to fix?
