View Full Version : Kindle OWNERS wish list
jacksonunit 02-20-2008, 06:56 AM I'd like to see a (sticky?) list of things Kindle OWNERS would like to see changed, especially on the Kindle they have in their hands RIGHT NOW. For example...
Scroller Wrap. - This would be the option to have the scroller "wrap" off of the top or bottom around to the bottom or top respectively. A little thing, but it would be a nice option to have.
Granular Show/Hide - Put more properties in the show/hide menu for the home page. Just toggles for SD memory, Main memory would be a good start but I would also like to see toggles for ALL of the types (books, newspapers, blogs, magazines, audobooks, MP3s ...) Of course a simple user configurable folder system could probably do this in a way that would make more people happy with it.)
Simple User Configurable Folder System - This would not need to be an ACTUAL OS oriented folder system but just a tag view type system where users could create tags, associate them with objects and view only those objects in the home menu when that tag was "activated".
Security - Probably my number one want. I almost didn't get the Kindle because of the lack of security. Ideally the whole machine would go into locked mode in the screen saver mode and be really easy to wake up if your password was "ab" or hard if it was something like "5kunkW3rkz!4". I'm an old palm head so I enjoyed the option of not having security at all. Of course it would be nice to have document level security but that is another development issue.
Colour - Just kidding. This is an example of something a non-owner would want. Honest question that I explain to people in my E-Ink spiel. Of course... if it's just a firmware mod... :)
Paging/Texting/messaging- I probably would NOT use this feature but I would recommend it and wonder why people aren't screaming for it. Seems like the infrastructure is already there. Amazon could probably make a fat wad of cash for very little investment by charging a monthly of per msg fee.
Image Zoom - This feature would allow viewing of images at original size as published, and/or provide a zoom effect when selecting an image. Navigation on the image could be accomplished using the number buttons for various degrees of L/R or the old "I,J,K,L,M" for Up, Left,Center,Right,Down step-per-push type navigation within the image.
Font Selection - This feature would allow the use of third party fonts or at least an expanded selection of proprietary ones.
Search Scope - Allow the user to limit the scope of the search to a type of item or an individual item. Get really granular and allow searc scope limiting to chapters or Read/Unread materials.
Direct Search - allow the user to highlight a phrase or term and put it straight into a wiki or google search.
Power Management. - provide power settings that intelligently disable the wireless until feature that requires it is used. Allow the user to schedule on-off time to receive periodical content or just leave it on full time.
NOTE: There are quite a few things I'd change about the Amazon store and whispernet coverage but those would be other lists. For instance, it is despicable stupid to recommend I read "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" when I have indicated I already own it. What, did they think I was using it for a coaster? Perhaps if I write a review they will suggest I buy three more copies? Bahh...
ps Of course an Improbability Drive would be a nice feature but THAT would be a hardware mod. :)
Nate the great 02-20-2008, 07:03 AM This is a very good list. Most of this should be possible to do in a software upgrade. Again, well done.
wallcraft 02-20-2008, 08:13 AM I second the scroller wrap suggestion.
I would like to see a native resolution (larger than the screen) image zoom option in the reader. I'm not sure what the best navigation method would be, but perhaps the 1-9 keys for horizontal center in 1/10th of the width and the scroller for vertical center.
jacksonunit 02-20-2008, 11:01 AM EXACTLY!
That addresses one of my few actual dissapointments with the Kindle. Image support seems really sloppy. Several books I have dl'd for sample I will not buy unless they can do something about the poor image translation. Try sampling "Upgrading and Reparing PC's" for a good example of this problem. Many of the charts were full page in the 3d version and are illegable in Kindle.
I'll add this to the list...
Nate the great 02-20-2008, 11:04 AM I second your request for higher granularity in the show/hide, especially if the options include mp3 and audiobooks.
Choisya 02-20-2008, 11:39 AM I would like to see the Kindle available for sale in the UK! I have been hoping to get one for my 75th birthday in March but am told by Amazon.com that I cannot purchase from them and that their 'whisper' wireless technology' will not work in the UK. I see that they are available on Ebay but I am scared to purchase one and then find it will not work here. If there are any UK users out there I would welcome their advice.
HarryT 02-20-2008, 11:51 AM Am I right in thinking that the Kindle only has a single font? The ability to load any TrueType or OpenType font you like onto the CyBook Gen3 is a really nice feature - that would be a great new feature for the Kindle!
mdibella 02-20-2008, 11:52 AM I've suggested these to Amazon directly...
I often read books in a series...and there is no way to determine which books to read in which order. I would like a way to mark a sequence number on them, or even better, when I finish a book, I'd like to be able to tell the Kindle to go get the next one in the series. The Amazon website does show series lists, but the Kindle storefront does not.
The Kindle storefront has 4 pages of recommendations, based on previous purchases. The problem is, there's no way to delete the ones I've already read in paper version. At this point, my recommendations list has 4 pages of books I've already read!

Don't do it. The machine will work, but you won't be able to buy any books from Amazon (without jumping through a lot of hoops) and you'll effectively be buying it with no warranty.
Have you considered the CyBook as an alternative?
wallcraft 02-20-2008, 12:20 PM Am I right in thinking that the Kindle only has a single font? The ability to load any TrueType or OpenType font you like onto the CyBook Gen3 is a really nice feature - that would be a great new feature for the Kindle! It has a single font. Even the iLiad now has two, and the PepperPad 3 MobiPocket Java reader allows any font you want (the Kindle's reader software is very similar so we know this is possible). It does seem that there are more "support" issues with fonts on the Cybook than with other features. So perhaps Amazon could sell font packs (I assume we could work out how to install our own if they did this). I would buy Arial Black for example, because the Kindle really needs a bolder font.
HarryT 02-20-2008, 12:23 PM It does seem that there are more "support" issues with fonts on the Cybook than with other features.
There's only 1 font bug on the CyBook that I'm aware of. It caches the fonts in a file in the system folder, and the cache doesn't always get updated correctly when you add or delete fonts. All you have to do to fix it is delete the cache file; it gets automatically recreated when you restart the machine.

There are more bugs. One book crashed the Cybook when I used the liberation font for example. Also if you add too many fonts the menu will not work properly.
HarryT 02-20-2008, 12:33 PM I think the liberation font thing is a problem with the font itself - from what I've seen reported, it seems to be specific to that particular group of fonts.
Yes, the Gen3 doesn't like having more fonts installed than will fit onto the font selection box; you do have to be careful about that!
jacksonunit 02-20-2008, 12:34 PM ...At this point, my recommendations list has 4 pages of books I've already read!
I know, that drives me nuts too. The regular Amazon store does not act that way but for some reason, it keeps wanting me to read kindle books I already own. Not really a Kindle device issue but I agree it needs to be fixed. Smart people are annoyed by sloppy things like this. Glad you wrote to them about it. I will too.
:thanks:

Yes, but it is a font related bug. It should not crash because the font is different.

Agreed.
badgoodDeb 02-20-2008, 12:56 PM I often read books in a series...and there is no way to determine which books to read in which order. I would like a way to mark a sequence number on them,
This isn't as easy a solution as you want, but I keep a TXT file on my computer which shows series books, and what order they come in. I download this text file to my Kindle, and when I finish a book, I just open this file to see what to buy (or read) next.
Also -- and again, this isn't overly simple -- but the mobiperl tools will allow you to prepend something (NN- for instance) to a file's title. So one *can* do what you've asked, but not with built in Kindle tools.
Choisya 02-20-2008, 01:14 PM Don't do it. The machine will work, but you won't be able to buy any books from Amazon (without jumping through a lot of hoops) and you'll effectively be buying it with no warranty.

Someone on another Forum here suggested buying from Amazon.com via Paypal Mastercard - would that be OK? I am also considering getting a friend in the US to buy it for me then I would have a warranty. By hook or by crook!:chinscratch:
No I haven't looked at Cybook but will do so not. Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I do this too, but I create the file as a pdf and then actually publish it as a book using Mobipocket Creator...this lets me add metadata, and I use the author's name so the file sorts right at the top of the series books.
It's a lot of messing around to do, though, to provide functionality that should be there (IMHO). Editing metadata on the Kindle itself is something I think needs to be added so that everyone can ensure their collection sorts as they want it.

An excellent suggestion. But my main complaint is that when I go to the Kindle store and see a very interesting book & discover that it is 3rd in a series ... The first two books aren't available in Kindle format. At that point, Amazon has lost 3 sales. I'm not going to go out & find the first two books in paper so that I can then get the third for my Kindle.

For series, I use collections and put the books in reading order. It works very well actually. Next best thing to folders and in terms of hor them menus work, I can't see how it could work any better if the Sony had real folders.

I have looked at the Cybook website and find that they too only ship to US and Canada! What's with these US companies who don't want to sell these book devices to the UK where there must be a huge market?!! :smack:
I am tempted to buy a Kindle via a US friend and just use other e-book sites for downloads. My friend would then hold the warranty for me.
igorsk 02-21-2008, 04:25 AM Um what? Bookeen is based in France and they definitely ship to UK.

No, you're mistaken; Bookeen are a French company and ship world-wide. I bought my CyBook directly from them.
See:
http://www.bookeen.com
The price is £245 + shipping.

When you go to the booken site and go to their online shop you have to select your country at the top of the page. They most definitely ship to your country.
Alisa 02-21-2008, 01:33 PM Back to the wish list, here's few of mine:
Software:
*Folders
*Ability to tag errors
*Ability to narrow search to the current book
*Ability to highlight a phrase or term and put it straight into a wiki or google search
*Better power management. You should be able to have power settings that intelligently disable the wireless until you use a feature that requires it. Kindle is not a phone. I don't need to receive calls. I may want it on to receive periodical content but there could be a scheduler for that or I could choose to have it on all the time if I wanted. Fortunately I noticed Lab126 had a job opening for a power management engineer.
Hardware:
*Darker case color, maybe a bit less clunky form
*Power and wireless switches on the top instead of the back
*Integrated Lightwedge-style front light
*Of course a bigger, better, faster screen would be lovely but that's out of Amazon's hands
jacksonunit 02-27-2008, 07:04 AM Back to the wish list, here's few of mine:
Thanks for getting this thread back on the trail Alisa! I'll try to work this stuff in...
*Darker case color, maybe a bit less clunky form
I second this one. Ideally, the case would be a color close to the background color on the screen. The bright white/cream color of the case actually emphasizes the fact that there's not as much contrast between the black text and the grey background as I would want.
*Power and wireless switches on the top instead of the back
*Integrated Lightwedge-style front light
Both of these would make the Kindle more user-friendly. I'd add to this a suggestion that Amazon leave me *some* of the side real-estate where I can hold the device without hitting a button or two.
mdibella 03-03-2008, 08:17 AM Here's another one...when you download an ebook, I wish Amamzon would also send the thumbnail description that convinced you to buy it. I have a Kindle full of books I know I want to read, but in many cases I can't remember what it was that caught my eye, and if I select the book all I see is Page 1.
Paper books have a brief description of the book either inside the front cover or on the back. I can pick up a paper book and remind myself what it's about. I would love to be able to hover my cursor over a book in my Kindle list and read the thumbnail description.
daffy4u 05-18-2008, 02:27 PM I've just started using the Kindle while I'm on the elliptical machine. I wish I didn't have to keep reaching over to change the page. I would love to have some kind of remote that I could wear on my index finger with just a "next" or "prev" page button that I could activate with my thumb. It could be some kind of bluetooth thing.

Yeah, this would be handy for a lot of activities, but would, I think, entail a big hardware change for a built-in receiver. Who knows, maybe the next version. Send a suggestion to Amazon.
Meanwhile, maybe you could do something like holding a drumstick in your mouth and tapping the button with that. :D
daffy4u 05-18-2008, 08:38 PM Meanwhile, maybe you could do something like holding a drumstick in your mouth and tapping the button with that. :D
Ouch. I think I would need a EMT on site if I went with the drumstick option (I like my teeth and larynx). I think I'd rather reach over and push the buttons but thanks for the suggestion... really. :p ;)
honeybunny 05-19-2008, 11:57 AM LOL about the drumstick.
I had a different problem on the treadmill / elliptical. The elliptical at my gym has no tray at all, and the tray on the treadmill is really high. I end up holding the Kindle (by the case edges) and reading, and I live in mortal fear that I will drop it.
I also need a solution for reading in the bath! Who is going to make a waterproof case for the Kindle? I would buy it even if it was $100, I'm at a loss for bath-time reading!
daffy4u 05-19-2008, 12:36 PM I also need a solution for reading in the bath! Who is going to make a waterproof case for the Kindle? I would buy it even if it was $100, I'm at a loss for bath-time reading!
Here is a thread on the amazon boards about waterproof bags (http://tinyurl.com/6s7yxu) that will work with a Kindle, though not specifically made for one.
honeybunny 05-19-2008, 01:16 PM Thanks daffy! I think I am going to order the Dry Pak one! The ALokSak one just seems too big (12x12 vs 9x12). I can't believe you would need a 9x12 to fit the Kindle but everyone in that thread said you would.
brecklundin 05-20-2008, 01:06 AM Well, as the Kindle is at the top of my might buy-one-eventually list here are the changes that would make me seriously consider buying one:
improved contrast ratio (deal breaker for my eyes),
ability to read in low light (second deal breaker for a $400 single function device),
larger display,
some form of touch screen,
ability to do crossword puzzles,
hand written notes,
lose the keyboard!! Maybe in favor of a pop-up onscreen keyboard or make the stoopid thing slide out of the way,
built-in stand for hands free use,
lanyard post which can double as a security lock attachment,
lose the white bezel. I find white very distracting,
library management with reading list management,
adjustable auto page turning/scrolling
MAKE CONNECTIVITY MODULAR -- if I want HSDPA then let me buy and pay for the connectivity. If I want Wifi instead let me buy and plug in a wifi module. The only reason I can see why Amazon insists on a single MBB option is they plan on PUSHING ad content to the device. Since the connectivity is free you will either put up or not use it
More storage space. Support up to the current max. 32gb SDHC cards.
Minimum of a 5-year support agreement. Not unreasonable considering the "company store" nature of the Kindle.
For $400 the thing should have many of these and other suggested items already. Especially since the ONLY DRM content it reads can be purchased from Amazon.
Without supporting more formats (DRM or otherwise) buying this device is like being forced to shop at "the company store". If Amazon cannot handle competition...screw 'em, the Kindle will not be even close to the best reader device option by the this fall.
So Amazon is going to have to do a lot to convince me to buy what amounts to a DVD player that only plays Amazon DVDs.
honeybunny 05-20-2008, 05:39 AM Does any eInk device do auto-scrolling? I would think there would be a lot of flashing.
Also, brecklundin, have you actually used a Kindle? The contrast is superb. Any more contrast and it would glare. Most paper books aren't stark white anymore, but dove grey or very pale yellow. The black-on-white and glare is a major complaint of LCD screens actually. As is backlighting, hence the choice to avoid backlighting.
nheimberg 05-20-2008, 08:53 PM ability to do crossword puzzles,

I would love this capability. I would subscribe to a newspaper if I got this function.
Dylrob 05-20-2008, 10:52 PM Does any eInk device do auto-scrolling? I would think there would be a lot of flashing.
You could technically suppress the flash, as it's only there to minimize ghosting. The drain on the battery would be considerable though, and there would be no smoothness to it.
brecklundin 05-21-2008, 02:06 AM Does any eInk device do auto-scrolling? I would think there would be a lot of flashing.
Actually I also wrote page turning/scrolling. I added scrolling for clarification not as a want. I doubt any eink device would be able to scroll in their current state...but to be able to have auto-page turns might help some folks who cannot have any hands free while reading...as in at the gym, eating...whatever.
I have seen and used the Sony 505...same display...same marginal contrast ratio in lower light conditions. While I understand that for YOU the contrast is fine I wrote about what I need personally. The contrast ratio's of all eink display's I have physically seen or used, which includes Vizplex display's, is far from breathtaking. Except in direct sunlight...they RULE outside... :) If all I needed was to read outside I'd slap a Boxweave anti-reflective screen protector on one, and they would be awesome.
Trust me the paper used today in PB's is far whiter then anything one would have bought in the past. To my eyes the contrast on eink displays is not close to even those OLD paperbacks under most lighting conditions. In the 40+ years I have been buying paperbacks never were the pages white. Always an tan-ish/yellow-ish white?? Really not sure what color I would call it but white it never was for certain. ;) Perhaps you are thinking of glossy pages in more text book like editions? Those glossy pages will drive a person NUTS in a well lit room or under a reading lamp. In fact for reference texts I buy I won't buy any with that high gloss paper.
BTW, I am not sure if, by definition, it's actually glare one sees, but rather reflections. I really dunno as both words get used to describe the issue. Or maybe either word is correct??? As far as I know glare is a bright shining light emitted from a thing...the light from the pages is reflected ambient/background light. The same holds true for the new trendy high gloss LCD displays...they reflect too much background light back at the user and are horrible to work. But because they look so pretty in the store people buy them and then wonder why they have such a difficult time using the thing for any length of time...and in a well lit office they can be almost impossible to use. I have recommended to all my clients for years to avoid those higher gloss displays. Even to the point of adding anti-reflective screen protectors to any existing displays.
Anyway, I was not intending to move this discussion in a direction away from the topic as there are numerous threads about contrast of these displays but just wanted to answer why I want/need a better contrast display.
brecklundin 05-21-2008, 02:08 AM I would love this capability. I would subscribe to a newspaper if I got this function.
It would seem to make sense to have puzzle software on a device that enables newspaper subs...right? ;)
kevinpars 05-21-2008, 06:45 AM I agree that the ability to do crosswords would be a cool feature.
catsittingstill 05-21-2008, 11:11 AM A) Software changes
1) User configurable folders, or something that acts like folders, in the Home Screen view
2) Amazon Kindle books without DRM, or with only Social DRM, from those publishers who agree, and clear marking of such DRM-free or Socially DRMed books
3) A way for even non-Kindle owners to give Kindle books as gifts, and a way for Kindle owners and would-be-owners to add Kindle books to their wishlists
4) A way to loan Kindle books (presumably by using the Whispernet to delete or disable a book on the owner's Kindle, and download it to a specified Kindle for a period of time set by the original owner, then remove it. A nominal fee for this service seems reasonable, since it would use Whispernet.)
5) Kindle books that will display on devices other than Kindles. Amazon will sell more Kindle books this way—and I would like to be able to recommend some of my favorites to other people.
6) For the Kindle to handle more formats (e-pub pops to mind) and even other (sigh) DRM formats. Amazon will sell more Kindles if it doesn't mean that people already into e-books have to throw out their e-book collections. And I would like to have a shot at some e-books that aren't available from Amazon yet.
7) More reliable PDF conversion. I know you're working on it, and I think that's a good thing; keep it up.
8) Amazon's Kindle store should not recommend books I already own in paper to me on the Kindle. I love my Kindle, but I'm not going to buy those books all over again, and they're crowding out recommendations of things I might actually buy.
9) A more stable web browser would be nice.
10) I would like to see scientific journal articles available for the Kindle for a moderate price. Maybe some sort of 1$ a month subscription to a database, and then a moderate per page or per article charge?
11) More college textbooks available for Kindle.
12) Native support for .rtf files on the Kindle, or automatic mail-in conversion of .rtf files.
B) Hardware changes
1) a touchscreen, with handwriting recognition (making the keyboard and the page turning buttons unnecessary).
2) a larger screen, perhaps even big enough to display 8 1/2 by 11 pdfs at or near full size. Combined with the ability to display pdfs natively, this could be a big boon to a scholar (imagine searchable, annotateable, pdfs of articles in your field (swoon)). And combined with 1, you might not even have to increase the size of the device all that much, since you could reclaim the keyboard real estate.
C) corporate negotiations (and hardware changes)
1) I would like the Kindle to work worldwide (or at least in Europe). I have friends and family in Europe that I would like to introduce to the Kindle.
pilotbob 05-21-2008, 11:13 AM I agree that the ability to do crosswords would be a cool feature.
The NYT Crosswords game for the DS is "da bomb". You can do a crossword with other DS users in Co-op mode or battle mode. We usually work on a puzzle while waiting for dinner when going out. NYT puzzles are HARD!

Will Shortz is an evil sadist!! period...hehehehe...we live for the daily NYT puzzles plus I have a library of the last 10-years worth of puzzles (I d/l'd the entire library for giggles.) I do mine either on the nx73v using BeCrossword or on the Nokia N800 using a Maemo port of Xword which is still being improved as we 'speak'.
Ever watch the movie/documentary called Word Play? If ya like xword puzzles wether you are good at them or not, the movie is a lot of fun...I was surprised how fun the movie is and what an engauging character Will Shortz is...
But, really I would figure with all the open source apps if the device makers could either encourage developers to port over OR just buy one of them and put it on the device...I figure most people who love reading also enjoy xword puzzles. And if you have a subscription to any newspaper that usually includes access to the daily puzzles.
I was disappointed something like this was not part of the Kindle considering the subscriptions. Heck they could even sell monthly subs to the puzzles only just as the NYT and other papers already do.

ahhhh...gottcha, thanks...I never got into the game stuff though I did buy one of the early gen's Sega or Nintendo I have no idea...whoever had Sonic the Hedge Hog as a game. It was fun for a while then it got dusty then it moved to the "garrage" somewhere. But if they have things like crossword puzzle games I can splat out to the big screen...cool!!

Well, I got my DS because I wanted Brain Age. When I told my wife she thought it was silly and a waste of money. But, she got me one as a gift any way.
Well, we now have 4 in the family (of 5 people) and my wife has basically adopted mine.
We tend toward the more cerebral stuff like Brain Age, NYT Crosswords (as mentioned above), Big Brain Academy, Brain Age Flash Focus, other brain age and puzzel type titles. The coolest things is most of the games have a multi-user mode where you can play with/against other DS's using only a single copy of the game. The DS will transfer the game via built-in WiFi to the other players.

lubberts 05-26-2008, 10:03 AM My wish list for my Kindle:
#1, wanted more than anything else I can think of (other than page turning by brainwave :-)
SOME SORT OF ABILITY TO ORGANIZE THE BOOKS INTO FOLDERS/COLLECTIONS!!
I switched from a sony ereader to the kindle, and there are only two things I occasionally miss from the ereader, the thin size of my 505, and the ability to create collections, that would stay in order, and allow me to easily remember which book is next in a series instead of having to create a whole other doccument (that has to be maintained and updated) and takes quite a bit of effort to view, then go to the correct book that is next in the series.
Even just the ability to create one folder, or ordered list called "what to read next" that I'd be able to organize and order, so I don't have to wonder while at work what book is next, or which series I was planning on starting next.
THAT DRIVES ME CRAZY!!
#2 would be related to the store, if you're going to have some of the books from a series, for christs sake carry them all!!
I can understand that they can't incorporate all books immediately, but as in for instance the harry dresden files series, why the heck would you have all the books available in Kindle except two right smack dab in the middle of the series?? I'm spoiled and don't like to read paper books anymore, so i'm not going to buy them on paper. At least give me some sort of t-minus 3 months till it's available or something...that danged little icon that says "are you the author? click here to learn how you can make this book a kindle edition!" mocks me left and right when it comes to quite a few series I read.
#3 would be related to the design of the kindle. It doesn't really bother me that it's ugly (i wear socks with my berkenstocks) but you have to admit, when presented with the kindle and the prs505, right next to one another, it's like the kindle is the chunkier, smarter, and more socially awkward younger sister. I'd really like to see her exit that awkward phase and start wearing makeup and using acne cream...ya know?
I'd like it to be thinner, a darker color, have the keyboard be much smaller, or disappeared all together (it's like a main focal point for people looking at it) and keep the page turning buttons the way that they are in that they are available to be pressed no matter where your hand is on the book (don't miss that about the ereader) but not so that there isn't a place to hold onto that isn't a button. I mean give me some sort of a lip or something to grab before I get to button land there on the edge.
Also, the case...it's not that the case is particularly horrible, but comparing the case from the 505, i'd love to have one that connects via a hinge of some sort...something more reliable than small plastic lip that comes un-connected whenever it is jostled and elastic. Please?
that's my wishlist, though if anything on my list made it onto the next iteration of the kindle i'd buy another one for that feature. You listening Amazon? I've purchased 4 already in my family, and would purchase 4 more, handing the old ones down to other friends and family members if you would fix one or more of the things i listed...i'm sure i'm not the only one.
Rasczak 05-26-2008, 11:59 AM I've just started using the Kindle while I'm on the elliptical machine. I wish I didn't have to keep reaching over to change the page. I would love to have some kind of remote that I could wear on my index finger with just a "next" or "prev" page button that I could activate with my thumb. It could be some kind of bluetooth thing.
I could swear I've seen a trick somewhere about setting the Kindle to automatically turn pages, sort of like a slide show- maybe its just my imagination. Anyway, cool idea.

Some of the suggestions make me think "just get a small laptop".
