Plato's Apology is a philosophical work, presented as a dialog between Socrates and the Athenian Court where he was being tried. In 399 BCE Socrates was charged with "corrupting the youth" and atheism. Trials in Athens included very large juries: in his case, about 500 Athenian citizens. In one of the most touching episodes in judicial history, Socrates tests the ability of Athenian democracy to put truth and justice ahead of prejudice and the arrogance of power.
