As I described in this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=146076), I tried to load the 10,699 mobipocket books on the blackmask dvd onto a 4gb memory card. :book2: I wanted to know how much the Kindle could hold without crashing. I'll share my experience with you. The Kindle usually wimped out at around 700 pages of books in the Home screen (12 items per page). By wimp out, I mean that the display, the buttons, and the scroll wheel froze. On a few of my attempts, the Kindle recognized up to 780 pages before freezing, but that was the minority case. Also, it became very sluggish. I noticed that, if the list grew that large, my books on the Kindle's memory stopped being displayed. Based on my experience, I'd say that you could keep 5000 books in the documents folder of an sd card without experiencing a crash. This is just a conservative guess. The limitation on the number of files may be something that disappears in the future should Amazon allow folders. Who knows.

I'm ok with 5000 but that's based on the assumption that it would add a fair amount to the hardware cost of the device if it had the horsepower to handle organizing and searching more than that with a reasonable amount of speed. It is not important enough to me to carry 5000 books at a time to be worth much extra money. I've got a few hundred on there right now and that's fine. If they added subfolders I might carry even more since I could organize it better. Would it be great if it could search 5000 books without a hiccup? Sure. Nothing is free, though.

Another issue is indexing. With about 100 books on my Kindle, I already find the search function isn't as fast as it used to be. Can you still perform a global search with 3000 books loaded within a reasonable time frame?

Another question for snookums: I am thinking to buy the blackmask's dvd as well. However I suspect if their mobi files are proper. That is, do they have the right meta info in the file? Can you get the author displayed correctly on your kindle? Please let me know. THanks.

They are .prc files. So they don't have the author record. You would have to use mobi2mobi to add that information.

I don't understand. All the files I create with Mobipocket Creator are .prc files and they display the title and author just fine.

The Mobipocket files snookums has are probably a couple generations older than the ones you make with Mobi Creator.

Unfortunately, the filename extension of a MobiPocket file does not reliably indicate its type. Both older MobiPocket (PRC) format files and newer (MOBI) format files can have the extension .prc or the extension .mobi. The newer format has the text BOOKMOBI near the start of the file, and typically includes the title and author. See PRC to MOBI (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18224).
