There's a new audio subproject of Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.net) called Radio Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.net/audio/).

This new audio site currently has almost 400 free audio book titles available. Most are read by computer, which can be an interesting experience all by itself, but there are also 8 human read titles by Arthur Conan Doyle provided by AudioBooksForFree (http://audiobooksforfree.com/). "[Radio] Gutenberg makes audio eBooks available for some of the same great literature available in plain text."

Our thanks to PDA 24/7 (www.clieuk.co.uk) for this discovery.

Have you actually tried the synthesized voices? I believe it could be indeed interesting to try, but not really worth a replacement of a human reader. The quality of the reader's voice can make such a big difference to the overall experience of the audio book.

Good find BobR. I just tested it out. I gotta say: The computer-generated voice is gawd awful. I could barely understand some of it. You would think that with all the reading for the visually-impaired community programs out there, that they could get some humans on board.
