Hi,

I recently bought a new Reader via eBay and shipped it to Canada - where Sony does not sell them.

I've been using it for a few weeks and recently I'm getting a stubborn freeze and lock up problem. It essentially freezes at the startup window with the rolling arrows and the "loading" page. Occasionally it's possible to restart the Reader and it loads up only to get stuck at the start page again. I've tried allowing it a few hours to recharge from the USB and this also fails to change the situation once it's unplugged. Also of note if you look past the rolling arrow it indicate no books or media present in spite of there being some loaded.

Essentially I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for fixing the problem myself. And if not, whether Sony will help me at all in regards to replacement or repair.

My attempt to charge the reader took only several minutes. Once it's disconnected from power it "appears" to start up only to lag at the main screen again. With 4 bars of power.

Thanks,

Chris Burns

Most likely the cache xml got corrupted.
Reset it, turn on with USB plugged in, then delete the media.xml files from the flash drive.

Which media.xml file should I be removing? The one in the database folder, the tmp folder or both? Also, there is no external card this is the Reader's internal memory.

Thanks for your help.

Both, though most likely the one in /tmp doesn't matter.

Changing the XML files didn't change the freezing. The database one simply reappeared following a reset and the proceeded to freeze.

I also contacted Sony tonight after being "cut off" from holding since the department was closing. Nice of them. I've never seen such horrible technical support, with people reading from a script and interrupting me constantly. Basically since I'm in Canada I will have to pay the $50 in shipping just to have them look at in Texas. Something I wouldn't have to pay in the US. Unbelievably combative and terrible service.
