View Full Version : Dooney & Bourke Leather Case- Opinions Please!
MarciaCat 01-25-2008, 02:09 AM Does anyone here have the D & B leather case? Or has anyone seen and handled it. How is it protection-wise & what does it look like opened up? (Anyone have pics of it open?)
If you own it are you happy with it. I like the looks of it and I'm tempted, but would love to hear other opinions.
One more question, which color would be best with my dark blue 505?
I look forward to hearing your opinions!:) :)

There were lots of pictures and opinions when the Valentine edition of Sony PRS 500 came out last year.
igorsk 01-25-2008, 11:25 AM Some photos (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=57124#post57124) of the previous one.
MarciaCat 01-25-2008, 10:16 PM I did look at the pics of last years. What I really want to know is what does it look like inside, how does it "feel" in use. I was hoping someone had seen this one in person. Also, is it available in the Sony stores or online only?
Nytngale 01-30-2008, 09:57 PM I just ordered the DB cover off of SonyStyle. I'll let you know how it works out. I am such a pushover for this type of thing!

I look forward to hearing your opinion! (and pictures?) Which color did you order?
Nytngale 01-30-2008, 11:05 PM I ordered the brown/burgundy-ish color. I hope it looks as good as on the website.
MarciaCat 01-30-2008, 11:10 PM That's the one I'm interested in; I think it would look real nice on my navy blue Reader!!
Nytngale 01-30-2008, 11:17 PM Agree - I have the blue reader too. My cover shipped today - looking forward to having it soon - hopefully by Friday.
adfleisher 02-01-2008, 10:13 AM I ordered the Black D&B cover for the wife as a valentines day gift and it arrived yesterday. Very nice case. I just wish there were an option as nice for my Kindle. Very solid construction, excellent stitching, everything I have come to expect from the D&B name.

adfleisher 02-02-2008, 03:13 AM I'll get pictures up this weekend sometime.
pomlover 02-02-2008, 03:24 AM Hi all, I received my D&B cover today in the mail. The package was HUGE for such a little product. It came in a pretty kewel silver tin box that will be useful in the future to store stuff - it's pretty big. When I finally got through the maze of packaging and got to the cover, I was a little underwhelmed. It is definitely good looking. It's made...... tada - in China (what the hell isn't these days). I put it side by side with the stock brown cover that came with my 505 and there is not much difference in the quality except that it looks nicer. I don't think it was worth the $149 but what-the-hey. I make a good income, I have no rug-rats, I'm getting OLD, and I've got to spend my money somehow :D!
nathantw 02-02-2008, 01:08 PM Thanks for the review, pomlover. It's a little disappointing to hear that, first, it was made in China and second, that it was almost like the stock case. From your review I think I'll stick with my black leather case.
Nytngale 02-04-2008, 10:41 PM Hi all,
Received my DB cover today - the burgundy/brown one. It is very pretty. However, the quality is not significantly different from my current pink leather cover and there are no internal pockets for an id card, boarding pass like the pink one. All in all I am disappointed - don't know what I was expecting for sure, but for $150 I thought it would be more than it is. Oh well......
MarciaCat 02-04-2008, 11:31 PM I'm disappointed to hear there are no interior pockets too, Nytngale. I was really hoping the interior would be similar to the leather covers Sony offer. :( I don't care for Sonny's limited choice of pink or black. I really wish they had a red cover for the 505 like the one they still offer for the 500.
igorsk 02-05-2008, 05:01 AM Would anyone post some pictures please?
KDawg 02-05-2008, 04:55 PM Pictures!
And, on the spectrum from red to brown, where does the crimson land? I prefer brown and my red/green color blindness might just get me there if it isn't fire-engine red.
And as to texture, is it more slick/vinyl or... mmm... soft/rough (not quite sure how to describe it)?
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 08:12 PM Yes, pictures pretty please! I really want to see it 'in action' as it were. How does it look with the blue reader. Also how does it compare to the original cover protection-wise?
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 10:05 PM Okay - will try to send pics - not very good at that. The cover is textured. The interior is a disappointing brown that doesn't really make a nice contrast to the reader.
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 10:29 PM Okay - here goes - hope these links work:
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg231/nytngale/IMG_0558.jpg
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg231/nytngale/IMG_0561.jpg
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg231/nytngale/IMG_0556.jpg
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 10:34 PM Wow - glad that worked. The color is true. The textured surface is a combo of smooth and definite texture where the pattern lines are. The interior is a little darker than actual. Hope this is helpful.
nytngale
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 10:48 PM :goodjob:Thanks for the pics! The color is very nice; definitely has a reddish tone. I wish that it had inside pockets.
What is it like protection-wise? Does it have a sturdy feel to it in comparison to your other covers?
Color me disappointed overall  . For $150 I expected better features. I'm gonna wait and see if the price goes down any before buying one.:huh2:
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 10:51 PM I really miss the inside pockets too. As far as the sturdiness - it is not any heavier than my other covers and thus no improved protection. I would have definitely waited had I seen this in person. I am very disappointed as well - the price for vanity I guess.
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 10:53 PM :zoiks: Whoa!! I just looked at the Sony page and it's marked down to $99 !!!!!  Should I buy it???? :chinscratch:
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 10:57 PM Are you serious???? :smack:I am so disgusted with myself. How bad do you want it? Like I said it is pretty and it is D&B...... :D
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 11:04 PM Well....it would tie in nicely with my D&B fabric purse trimmed in what appears to be the same color!! :D :D I'm sincerely tempted!!
Aforementioned purse is sitting next to me whispering "Buy it......buy it....buy it...." :laughter:
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:10 PM Think I hear a purchase approaching.......... :2thumbsup
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 11:11 PM I have one in my cart.......:D :D
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:13 PM Oh by the way.. forgot to mention that it also looks great with my Brahmin business tote too!! :o
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:14 PM Glad someone got it at a better price!
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 11:19 PM Ooohhhh... I've got a nice Brahmin bag it would go with too!!:2thumbsup :2thumbsup
Which shipping method did you choose? The 'Regular Ground' or 'Economy Ground'?
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:22 PM I did the cheapest mode. Actually got it pretty fast.
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:23 PM PS: Sounds like we need to start a high-end bags and readers forum!! :D
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 11:25 PM Both choices are part of their free shipping offer. Regular is FedEx, economy is the Post Office.
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:27 PM Mine came Fed Ex
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 11:32 PM PS: Sounds like we need to start a high-end bags and readers forum!! :D
Good idea!!!
I chose FedEx too!
Nytngale 02-05-2008, 11:34 PM You'll have to let me know what you think. Suppose Coach will have something too??
MarciaCat 02-05-2008, 11:41 PM You'll have to let me know what you think. Suppose Coach will have something too??
Hmmm.......Different covers to go with different handbags!!:shocked2: :shocked2: I don't want to think about that right now -- my wallet might rebel!! :rofl:
KDawg 02-06-2008, 04:53 PM Nytngale,
Thanks for the description and pictures. Not too tempted now. I don't care for the M-Edge either. I guess I'll stick with the pleather.
Lilly 02-06-2008, 07:07 PM I bit the bullet and ordered the red one.
Rep-PJPL 02-06-2008, 09:38 PM I got a silver reader just after Christmas. My wife got the blue one. We both LOVE them and think these were the best purchases made in years. I did not particularly like the pleather cases - and so I surprised my wife by purchasing a D&B cover for each of us (for Valentine's Day). These just arrived.
My initial reaction - huge package, large silver tins, and $149 each for leather products stamped "made in China". The D&B embossed name doesn't come cheap. And I'd prefer no key chain and a lower price. I doubt I will ever use the key chain.
However, these cases are beautiful and, I believe, well worth the price given how much they enhance the look and feel of what are already beautifully designed products. The leather and stitching are very nice D&B/Coach quality. The black (which is all black) with the silver really looks great. The red (which is very red, not brownish) looks great with the blue (though the inside is brown, not red, if this is an issue for you). These covers look like they will become more beautiful with age and use - and will get the patina of a fine leather bound book.
Really, that's what makes this worth the money. The covers give the readers more substance/refinement and make them feel like a cherished volume. They are more comfortable to hold than the pleather. My wife said that she has already gotten several comments about her reader - more so than with the old cover - if this matters.
MarciaCat 02-07-2008, 12:24 AM Would you believe my D&B cover will be here tomorrow?! :dizzy2:  I just got my FedEx tracking info; apparently it's shipping from San Diego to me here in......you guessed it- San Diego!!:2thumbsup:happydance:
MarciaCat 02-07-2008, 07:35 PM My D&B cover arrived today at 10:30 a.m., a scant 38 hours after I ordered it! It is definitely red, not burgundy and the interior is brown. I think the color looks much better in person than online. All in all I'm very happy with it......even happier that I got it on sale!!:D :2thumbsup
I will take pictures of it tonight and try to highlight the true color. I'll try to post the best pictures tonight as well.
Nytngale 02-07-2008, 07:45 PM There must be differences in the dye lots for the leather as mine is the exact color as shown in the pictures I posted. Maybe I would have liked it better if it had been more red!
nathantw 02-07-2008, 07:58 PM I'd be pretty miffed if I were an early, early purchaser of this cover and paid $150. To see it suddenly drop to $99 would get my blood boiling since it's less than a few DAYS since it was released at $150.

Lucky you MarciaCat; mine says it will be delivered on Feb 12! Looking forward to your pictures.:D
Nytngale 02-07-2008, 10:16 PM Color me miffed! I think it is pretty crappy, but then I guess retailers count on fools like me! At least Apple waited a little longer to drop the price on the iPhone before irritating their customers.

I would call Sony and tell them that since it was not long after you purchased your cover that you want to have the difference refunded.
MarciaCat 02-08-2008, 12:19 AM I've taken a few pix featuring my D&B crimson cover with a few other red things (including the key ring) and the original cover for comparison. The kitten (Maggie, 7 1/2 months old) is not red but she wanted her picture taken!! :D :D
I may take more pictures in tomorrow to see if the red photographs differently in daylight.
MarciaCat 02-08-2008, 01:04 AM D'oh!! Of all thing red I've got, how could I forget my Ipod??!!:smack: :smack: :oops2:
Two more comparison pictures.
Yes, red is my favorite color!:D :D
Lilly 02-08-2008, 07:31 AM Thanks MarciaCat! I cant wait for mine to arrive. Do you like how your reader look inside the cover?
MarciaCat 02-08-2008, 04:11 PM Lilly, I really like how it looks in it new cover. The interior is a nice brown as shown in Nytngale's pictures. the leather is very comfortable to hold, it seems a little sturdier than the original pleather cover. It's a little stiff to fold the front cover back when in use, but that may change over time.
On a side note to Nytngale, I was looking at the Dooney & Bourke website last night :D and saw that they have all sorts of handbags, totes and accessories in the same croc pattern:
Dooney Croco Handbags (http://www.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=19332)
Dooney Croco Accessories (http://www.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=19791)
Nytngale 02-09-2008, 09:10 AM Hi MarciaCat,
Yours looks like it might be a little redder than mine - I have found that mine looks different shades in different lighting. Great idea comparing with other red items. Thanks for the DB links - hadn't gone there, but just might have to have another accessory to complement my reader!!!
PS: My cats are jealous that your kitty got to be in the picture.
Nytngale 02-09-2008, 09:14 AM That's a great idea - think I will. Thanks for the suggestion!
MarciaCat 02-09-2008, 03:22 PM Nytngale, my three cats are well versed at getting their pictures taken whenever possible   I have posted lots of pix of them over at My Cat Hates You!!:D :D :D
I have noticed that my cover looks redder with natural light as opposed to artificial light. I'm very pleased with my cover, it's much nicer than the original!!
On the D&B accessories page did you happen to see the "Small Writing Journal" (http://www.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=25270) that looks remarkably like the Reader cover, except for being an inch and a quarter larger in length and and height but priced 'only' at $55? The key fob is $25. Methinks someone noticed the similarity and lowered the price at Sony. I hope you are successful with getting Sony to adjust the price!!
Here are the photos I took in daylight:
Nytngale 02-09-2008, 03:48 PM I have 3 cats as well! 2 siamese and 1 Maine Coon - all extremely spoiled and priviledged although they are highly unaware of it! Mine cover is more red in brighter light - we haven't had any sunlight recently - I live in NW Ohio where it has been overcast for what seems like years! :( I'll be in Florida in 2 weeks - can't wait to see what sun will do for it. Didn't get a chance to check out much at the DB website - although I do like the large tote bag - $525 yikes!
Rep-PJPL 02-10-2008, 11:59 AM An update to my earlier post: I called SonyStyle about the price drop. They were very pleasant and immediately credited me for the price difference. Now I really like these new covers.
KDawg 02-13-2008, 04:51 PM I know I said I had lost interest, but the price drop reKindled ;) my interest and I ordered a black D&B for my silver 505. I'm very happy with it.
The texture of the leather is very nice. I was afraid it would be very, I'm not sure what the word is (processed?), and feel like vinyl. It doesn't. Both the inside and outside have a great, soft, leathery feel. This feels so much better to me when the cover is folded back compared to the original pleather cover. I liked the outside of the original but I never liked the feel of the tacky artificial suede on the inside of the original when folding back that cover. I love the feel, when folding the D&B back, of soft, real leather in back and metal up front. It smells great as well.
The only downsides are the high price, the fact that it offers no more protection than the original cover, and there are either no magnets or weak magnets inside so the D&B doesn't adhere to the Reader the way the original does. But these would not keep me from buying it again. The upside to having no more protection than the original is that the Reader retains it's great, slim profile. Highly recommended.

I know it's been a while since this was posted but thanks for the review. I just got my 505 and, while the tan cover is serviceable, it begins to dig into my arm after a couple of minutes of reading (I hold it resting on my arms) and it doesn't feel comfortable. After seeing the dropped price on the D&B ($75), various feedback and this review I bit the bullet and ordered today. I like D&B products as does my wife so I'm looking forward to migrating my 505 to a nicer home... :thanks:

May I make a suggestion? Get the lightwedge case for $70. It's a lot more functional and useful.
