View Full Version : eBook Library software not working
Yarrow 01-19-2008, 01:39 PM My eBook Library software has suddenly stopped working. When I open the programme nothing comes up on the screen but if I check in Task Manager then the eReader.exe is running in the background.
Any suggestions?
RandallFlagg 01-19-2008, 10:19 PM I too have this problem. I contacted Sony, but they didn't have an answer. I am able to run it in safemode, so I know the software is working. I've checked drivers and came up empty. It has to be a driver or a program I've installed because it was running fine with Libprs500. Now it just like the user above, its running in the task manager but the gui isn't visible. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've uninstalled and removed all traces of the reader in windows, the registry and docs and settings. I'm currently using my mac, but there was even a file that started with a k in docs and settings that I removed, but none of that fixed the problem. I installed the software on my laptop and I'm using that now, but I sure would like to get it back on my server. Thanks for any help.
RandallFlagg 01-19-2008, 10:44 PM Well, after reading a few post I saw where I should uninstall libprs 500 and reinstall instead of upgrading. So I redownloaded libprs500 and I installed the old Connect software [I keep all my downloaded exe files] and it works. It asked me if I wanted to update the software to the new ebook library, but for now I chose not to. Just seeing the library was good enough. If it starts to act up or I need to update then I'll try it again.

I believe that both the Ebook library software [formerly called Connect software]and libprs500 use the same device driver. Here's a link to a thread about it:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13517&highlight=connect+driver+libprs500
JS Wolf noted in the thread:
"if you have Connect software installed, you have the USB driver for Connect installed as well. You cannot have both the Connect USB driver and the libprs500 USB driver at the same time. The Connect USB driver seems to get priority. In order to get libprs500 to work if you have Connect installed, delete the USB driver for Connect and reboot. You should still be able to use the Connect Store to purchase books I would think. But I'm not 100% sure."
See the thread for more info.
KorrMuraan 01-20-2008, 10:00 PM The library sw was too buggy and slow for me. I uninstalled it(like the trash it is) and use drag'n'drop through explorer now.
Atlantic 03-29-2008, 10:26 AM So what is the solution to this problem ? Still cannot figure out.
Thanks
comtrjl 03-29-2008, 10:48 AM If you go to '/Documents and Settings/<your login name> / Local settings/ Application Data/ ' and rename the directory 'Sony Corporation', that may help with the problem of the software starting up but not showing its interface.

waison 03-29-2008, 12:18 PM I will disconnect my reader first before starting the eBook Library software, this usually work for me.

Thanks for the tip. Just a clarification: Do you mean renaming the folder to another name for example Sony Corporation to ereader ?
Thanks
comtrjl 03-29-2008, 02:25 PM Rename the folder from 'Sony Corporation' to 'Sony Corporation.orig', for example. When it doesn't find the original folder - because you've just renamed it - it will create a new one.

Atlantic 03-29-2008, 04:36 PM Unfortunately did not work. The software still doesn't display while it shows up in Task Manager as running. In Safe Mode it opens up.
Any other suggestions....
Thanks
JSWolf 03-29-2008, 05:45 PM If it works in safe mode, then it is something you run on start up. So remove it all and then see if it works. Especial any Anti-virus/spyware software.
mollybo 04-06-2008, 08:02 PM If you delete the Connect software, how do you make collections?
JSWolf 04-06-2008, 10:07 PM You can use Libprs500 to make collections as well
mollybo 04-07-2008, 06:37 PM Oh, well there's no point at all to that horrible Sony software, then. Good riddance.
pilotbob 04-07-2008, 10:58 PM You can use Libprs500 to make collections as well
How would you do this? I don't remember seeing that in the Docs?
Also, do you know, if you edit the metadata, does it change the book file or just the data in the database?

NatCh 04-07-2008, 11:01 PM Oh, well there's no point at all to that horrible Sony software, then. Not if you don't want to buy books from Sony, anyway. :nice:
How would you {make collections}?
Edit the "tags" column.
Collections are annoying because you still get the big list of everything, so I've ended up with a "misc" tag for everything that's not otherwise tagged. I'd like to have a bulk tag facility but IMO there's more important things to work on.

Libprs500 also makes collections for series. So if you enter the series name and number for each book in the series, you'll see a collection whose name is the series name; the books in the series will appear in the correct order inside the collection. It's quite nice! (Thanks, kovid!)

Ah cool, I have added all my books (not many) to libprs's db, but I have yet to try to use it to put books on my Sony.
Also, when you do "Save TO Disk" in the Directory format on a Sony 505, those folders don't show up in the sony right? Or, do you have to use the flat format when using Save To Disk for the Sony?

Atlantic 04-11-2008, 11:01 AM If I understand this correctly, tags in Libprs500 are recognized by the sony reader and then filed in the collections folder. ie tag a book with mystery in Libprs500 then the tag mystery will appear in the collections folder of the sony reader.
Is this correct ?
Thanks
heatherc 06-17-2008, 09:36 PM Can I drag and drop books into the reader without using the Sony Connect software? I keep having problems with the software not opening at all.
If I can drag and drop...can I still organize collections?
dordale 06-17-2008, 09:52 PM You can drag and drop books directly to the reader through Windows Explorer (except for books purchased from the Sony store). You won't be able to organize your books into collections this way, though.
Also, check out Calibre, a great program written by Kovid Goyal available here:
http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net
Calibre does support collections and much more--a great program!
One thing that the Sony software does that neither "drag 'n drop" or Calibre won't do is "prepaginate" books before they're added to the reader. So, on longer books it'll take the reader a while to open the file the first time you open it. Also, changing font sizes for the first time in a book will take longer.
dordale :)
heatherc 06-17-2008, 11:29 PM Oo - good to know. Thanks!
