View Full Version : Broken display
David B 01-14-2008, 02:55 PM Hi,
This time I am done playing with my cybook, half of the screen went black. I tried to restart and reset but nothing improve. It's even worse since I took the picture, now the complete uper half is black.
I sent an email to booken, I hope I will get a replacement. I never drop it or anything. I read somewhere that this is not the first case like it, any feedback? Did you have it replaced?
Nate the great 01-14-2008, 09:43 PM It looks like the controller chip for the screen malfunctioned. You'll have to send the device in to be repaired or replaced.
HarryT 01-15-2008, 01:38 AM I agree with Nate - that definitely looks like a screen controller problem. As Nate says, you'll need to send it back for repair.
David B 01-17-2008, 02:55 AM Thanks for the feedback. I am still waiting for an answer from Bokeen.
Tulkas 01-17-2008, 05:29 AM I had a similar experience but the top half was all black ~ it was a return & replacement under warranty job ..

Well I would like this, if only they could answer my email. I was already addicted to the Mobipocket eNews subscription and I miss it badly :)
David B 01-21-2008, 05:03 AM It has been one week and still no news from Bookeen. A short message to inform me that my problem would be handdled as soon as possible would have been nice.
I am now very pissed off, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable from a company who sells such an expensive device.
Please, if somebody knows a phone number where I can join Bookeen directly...

I would have waited two days then sent another letter asking for confirmation that the first letter had arrived and repeating the first letter. Letter can disappear in spam filter so it is good to confirm that that has not happened.

Well I agree, emails are not the best way to support customers, so why don't they provide also phone number?
HarryT 01-21-2008, 05:53 AM It's very difficult for small companies like Bookeen to provide international support by phone. Can they assume that all their customers will speak French? If not, how many languages does the person who answers the phone have to speak? Dealing with e-mails is a lot more straightforward. Because e-mail is not 100% reliable, I too generally give it 24h and then re-send. I've always found Bookeen's support to be pretty good at answering - if you've waited a week with no reply, I think the most likely explanation is that your e-mail didn't reach them.

I agree but still they are selling a 350€ device...
Well by the way it seems that you were right and they immediately answered today after I sent another email, so let say the first one is lost somewhere...
HarryT 01-21-2008, 11:41 AM That's good to hear. Hope you get it sorted out quickly.
IreneDelse 01-21-2008, 02:16 PM I think I have a similar problem. An hour ago, I disconnected my Cybook from my computer and went to power it down - bad surprise, the display was just a series of black and white squares! See the scan below...
So I tried reset and restart, but nothing works. After rebooting, the display
goes back to the squares again.
Anybody experienced something like this here?

Actually...yes. The exact same thing happened when I renamed the 'icudt36l.dat' file in de 'system' directory on the internal flash (don't ask. Insatiably curious :-)). You might want to see whether your internal flash is still readable and/or run fsck (Linux) or it's Windows equivalent (ScanDisk/chkdsk) on it.
Regards,
Marco.
IreneDelse 01-21-2008, 02:37 PM OK, I guess the problem comes from my tinkering with the ebook files in the file manager while the Cybook was plugged in the computer. But I never touched the system files.
New problem, now: I checked, and I can't read the internal flash drive on the computer anymore. The drive is detected but can't be mounted in Linux.

Dayum! Guess I'm happy I'm not trying to connect through a Linux system. This is not a 'good thing' to have happen. Have you passed this information on to Bookeen?
Derek

Ouch. That's you problem then; if the Cybook can't find that file (in your case because your internal flash won't even mount) the result is a display like that.
If you can't get the flash to work at all, it's a warranty job I'm afraid :-(

I do not think you have to give up so soon. I would try to reformat the internal drive and build a new filesystem and then copy my backup of the system files to it. If you do not have a backup somebody here can probably supply the files.
tompe 01-21-2008, 03:29 PM I also suppos a firmware "upgrade" will solve the problem. And if you mail Bookeen they seem to distribute them.
Maybe somebody that has got it could distribute it here so people have it available?

We'd need Bookeen's permission for that. They may not wish to have it available to non-customers.
slayda 01-22-2008, 07:54 AM Looks like that when I get my Cybook, the best thing I can do first (after charging the battery) is make a backup of the system files.
Anyone have the procedure written down for Windows to do this?
HarryT 01-22-2008, 08:03 AM Just copy them with Windows Explorer.
IreneDelse 01-22-2008, 12:52 PM Thanks everybody. I have to be away from home for a few days, but this weekend, I'll try connecting the Cybook to a Windows PC, and see if I can retrieve the files. If not, I'll email Bookeen and hope for the best.
IreneDelse 01-27-2008, 10:12 AM Thanks Tompe! Connecting to a Windows PC did help. I've just formatted the flash drive in FAT format, and now I can access it, both on Windows and on my own Linux machine.
Now I understand I have to rebuild the file system and copy the system files. Unfortunately I didn't back them up before. :smack:
(I have a backup of my ebooks, but not of the Cybook system files. Silly me.)
So I'm going to mail Bookeen to ask them for a copy, and I hope it won't take too much time.

If you have formatted it as a FAT you ought to have a file system on it. Especially if you can mount it. You could probably have used mkdosfs on linux to create the file system on the partition.
IreneDelse 01-27-2008, 10:28 AM DiabloNL : thanks! You have pm. ;)
Tompe: You are right, I meant that the system files were missing. I managed to format the internal flash disk in FAT, and now I can mount and read the it with Linux, so the file system is there.

Email is send. Goodluck! :2thumbsup
IreneDelse 01-27-2008, 10:45 AM Good news: it worked, my Cybook is alive again! Thanks tompe, diablo and everybody for helping. :thanks:
First thing to do, now, a system backup... :sweatdrop
diabloNL 01-27-2008, 10:53 AM Good to hear!
IreneDelse 01-30-2008, 12:10 PM Even better, I've received today an e-mail from Bookeen support with a very detailed procedure and links for downloading a kernel update and system files backup.
Hi Irene,
As you replied to my post in the other forum, you're aware that I've had a similar problem. But I'm not sure it's because I was fiddling with files, because both times it's happened, I was not connected to my PC.
In any event, I was wondering if you could post Bookeens procedure?
IreneDelse 02-03-2008, 08:20 AM @ Azog: Post here, no, I'm sorry I can't, the message states it's "not for distribution". So I think I would have problems if I posted it. Plus, I'm not sure it would be safe for you to try this procedure, if what happened to your device is not exactly what happened to mine.
But don't hesitate to email Bookeen. I had an answer in about 3 days, so it's not a terribly long delay.
BTW, do you still have a broken display on your Cybook?
Did you try formatting the flash drive and copying the sytem files anew? I did that while I was waiting for Bookeen's answer, and it did the trick for me.
adehoces 02-19-2008, 04:21 AM Hi folks,
I also managed to delete my CyBook system files. I red through this thread and sent Bookeen a couple of mails two weeks ago, with no joy. IreneDelse, I was hoping you would forward that email on to me if you dont mind?
Thanks in advance!
IreneDelse 02-19-2008, 12:55 PM @ adehoces: Please PM me. Now I have the backup, I can send you the system files. ;)
Tulkas 02-22-2008, 07:23 AM Hi ~ out of interest was the kernal/system files that Bookeen provided still version 1.0 (build 476) or have they updated?
delphidb96 02-22-2008, 12:27 PM Hi ~ out of interest was the kernal/system files that Bookeen provided still version 1.0 (build 476) or have they updated?
I'm running Boo Reader version 1.0 (Build 538). So, yes, Build 476 is a bit old.
Derek
IreneDelse 02-22-2008, 01:14 PM Hi ~ out of interest was the kernal/system files that Bookeen provided still version 1.0 (build 476) or have they updated?
Tulkas: the kernel update I received from Bookeen was build 538.
Tulkas 02-28-2008, 01:05 PM Thanks for info ~ I think I'll see if I can get latest version from Bookeen
JSWolf 02-28-2008, 01:10 PM What's different between build 476 and 538?
Tulkas 02-28-2008, 01:12 PM ^ No idea but if there's 60 odd small amendments/fixes, even if nothing dramatically new, it might be worthwhile getting.
I'm emailing them now and will ask that very question!
JSWolf 02-28-2008, 01:13 PM Thanks Tulkas. I really am interested in what is different. So I can at least tell people this or that is fixed.
Tulkas 02-28-2008, 01:44 PM Well that's certainly a response time record (19mins from time of query!)
I've got the link to the latest build ~ 538 ~ no details of whats changed though
The key news however, quoting from their response...
"The first official upgrade will be released in March."

From my experience, the Cybook was less buggy with build 538 of the OS than when I bought it. So the changes were probably correction of minor but troublesome errors.
And thanks for passing the news about the upgrade. ;)
