That's a rather... basic implementation, if I may say so. Anyone interested in having a real IRC channel?

Agreed ;) I spent a lot of my college time on IRC (more than it could have done me any good). Alas, nowadays most people prefer to communicate via IM or social network communities. I am afraid most young folks online today haven't even heard about IRC yet.

Anyone interested in having a real IRC channel?

What's popular today? Efnet? Linknet? Unfortunately we cannot host an IRC bot ourselves or our ISP will shut us down.

Freenode and OFTC are pretty popular with opensource and related projects. IRC in general is still used quite a lot by small groups which need to communicate with each other - opensource projects, gaming clans, fansub or scanlation groups etc...

I still do IRC from time to time but only to meet my chat buddies from the old days. Most of them are using some kind of IM nowadays.

Best to stay away from what's popular and use a semi-private network. Usually a bit stricter controls to prevent all the script-kiddies from causing problems. Though it's definately a struggling protocol for anything but the more, ahem, lucrative topics ;) .

sff.net does have an IRC setup, and for the more mainstream user that doesn't want to bother with a IRC client they have a Java based IRC frontend on their website.

Another option, though heavier on the backend as a result is a chat program called Flashchat which is surprisingly well made for a program that only costs $5. I've used it on several forums and other then IRC I think it's the best chat available. Integrates quite well with a variety of forum backends.

I have registered #mobileread at irc.freenode.net. If you don't want to set up an IRC client, there is Mibbit (http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23mobileread&nick=mobilereader).

I am a fan of IRC. For anything other than one-on-one chats, it seems to behave better than anything else I've tried, especially better than any of the "chat" functions I've used in various fora. A private IRC server is better than one of the public ones -- you're much less likely to receive unsavory invitations. (And anyone who *wants* those unsavory invitations is welcome to visit one of those servers if they wish; they don't need a #mobileread channel to intice them.)

I know someone who runs a private IRC server; he's a true geek and really into cool technology. (Know anyone else who has had multiple T1 circuits into his home?) I'm forwarding his contact information to the editorial team using the "Contact Us" form.

One problem is that I'm not often ON the "Forum Home Page". Login. UserCP. New Posts. User Profiles... my normal traverse through the forum doesn't often intersect the Forum Home Page.

Really? Alexander's installed a "Reality Option" in the forum? Where is it? Where? Do tell, pretty please!

Cheers,
Marc (who likes a good intersection every now and then)

The Lusers have invaded a perfectly valid thread. I think I need a second account/username to stand any chance of having a SERIOUS conversation here.

I've only myself to blame. No, wait... "it was the Woman thou gavest me". One can't do better than imitate the prototype.

Over on igorsk's channel. the mibbit client seems to work fine. Maybe we can devise a plan for how to deal with these squirrels?

The Lusers have invaded a perfectly valid thread.

I prefer to think that we have simply enhanced it with a delightful filigree of surreality.

I think I need a second account/username to stand any chance of having a SERIOUS conversation here.

I think the "light" of Adrian will always shine through. Misery loves company, but only with itself.

I've only myself to blame. No, wait... "it was the Woman thou gavest me". One can't do better than imitate the prototype.

"It's a fair cop, but society's to blame".

I like our front-page chat module - I wait until everyone's in bed and then talk to myself on it...basically, like my normal meat-to-meat conversations then.

Cheers,
Marc (Why do they always stare vacantly into the distance over my left ear? What's wrong with my right?)

OK -- I decided to check out the chat facility here -- I do not see it on the home page when I click the "Home" link in the header above. I have scrolled up & down, side to side, and looked underneath all the twisties and I still can't find it.

Click the "Forums (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/)" link at the very top, above the logo. I think not many ever land on that page, but the stats should tell.

There is the simple chat added in the forum main page, and then Igorsk setup an IRC channel. He posted the details earlier in this thread, the 'mibbit' link is an easy IRC client that you access thru your web browser.

Here it is again for those that can't scroll back :) http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23mobileread&nick=mobilereader

Once in, change your nick like this, /nick Taylor514ce

In case you missed it in my previous post, here's the Mibbit link to the Freenode channel:

I've never received any "unsavory invitations" on Freenode. That network is primarily used by people working on various open source projects and does not have many "general chat" channels. Also, it requires nick registration to send private messages and that really cuts down on spamming.

It would be more useful and more people would see it if it was moved to the top of the forums page. Grabs attention as soon as you enter the forums.
