View Full Version : SD Card won't work...
pemilahu 12-16-2007, 06:14 AM Dear All,
Last Friday was really a nice day for me: I received my brand new CyBook Gen3. It works fine :2thumbsup, better than expected (based on posts I have already read here :()...
However: my SD card won't work :(. If I connect my CyBook Gen3 to my laptop Windows XP Explorer hangs, MobiPocket Reader hangs and neither the main memory nor the SD card of my eBook reader is accessible. As soon as the SD card removed, everything is fine.
I have the Deluxe version with 2GB SD card from Bookeen.
I do hope the problem is in the SD card and not in my new toy, CyBook Gen3...
Anyone can help?
Thx
ggendel 12-16-2007, 07:43 AM If you have anything that can read an SD card, then you should be able to figure out whether it's the card or reader's problem. This includes a computer, pda, camera, digital picture frame, etc. Just plug it in and see if the device has an issue.
If you have a computer that accepts it, and doesn't see the contents, you might want to check the disk manager to see if it shows up. If so, it might just need to re-format the card.

divory 12-16-2007, 05:56 PM I love the Gen3 -and I have had an iLiad for a year and a half (I was among the early ones) - and I find the Gen3 far, far better as an ebook. However I am confined to the internal memory for it just hangs if I put an SD card in the machine. The cards are OK - I have tried a few cards, all 2GB - but none seem to work. If I put the card in once the book is open then the SD card does not register on my computer.
Any ideas?

I think the problem is that of dynamic mounting. Try shutting down the unit and see if the card works after that. Be sure the card is in when you boot up.
Dale
divory 12-17-2007, 06:35 AM I have tried formatting both one and two gig cards, turning the book on with the card inserted or inserting it later with an identical effect - the book hangs as soon as the card is inserted or turned on. It is a great pity because I love the book and it really works as an ebook reader. I have tried all of them over the years and this is by far the best.
I have now gone back to Bookeen and since few have complained about this fault must only assume that it is a hardware failure.
However nothing will part me from it over the holidays!

pemilahu 12-17-2007, 07:23 AM Bad news: my SD card wokrs fine in my computer's card reader and a different SD card won't work in my CyBook hardware... I am totally disappointed: spent the big money, waited for many weeks and now I have a defective device.

That is bad. Bookeen definitely needs to figure out why and issue a patch.
Derek
JSWolf 12-17-2007, 01:15 PM Sounds like a hardware issue. A patch I don't think will do. What I think Bookeen needs to do is send out a new unit and when the shipper is there to deliver the new unit, take back the defective unit.

Jon,
I had a reply back from Michael at Bookeen that I thought I should post and share with the rest of you at MR... Talk about rapid response!
So to answer your question, the SD slot *is* tested before shipping...

Hello Derek,
Sorry we have been a bit unresponsive on the issues raised by our customers and I hope that we will enhance this part of our company very fast.
We follow very closely these issues, the SD card problem is very annoying and we try to understand form where it can come from and how. In theory, it should not be possible, at least just after receiving the device because we always test the SD card reader.
The Library frozen issue, is also under investigation. We will clearly answer all these issues. And we will leave no one with a defective unit. We have been clearly surprised by our success and we are strengthening our support team to answer these questions and offering a good service support.
Regards,
Michael

Arakin 12-20-2007, 09:19 AM I ordered my Cybook without a memory card, but recently had reason to try using one.
The first one I used was not read by the Library. It showed up (and worked) fine as a storage device when the Cybook was plugged into my PC, but the Cybook did not register it.
I have had similar problems with a Garmin device - in both instances I was using a Kingston Ultra II card, which the Garmin explicitly mentions as being incompatible (I'm not sure why).
Sure enough, replacing with a Fujifilm 1GB card, it worked fine.
Not sure if this helps at all,
Stuart
leeloo 12-22-2007, 02:38 AM Another data-point - the 1GB Sandisk SD card (just an ordinary SD card - not an Ultra or anything fancy) works perfectly. It does take a wee bit of effort to push the card in, and it might take a few seconds for the CyBook to get fully comfortable with it all, but after that things were fine. CyBook + SD card recognised as two drives by my Mac, and as a CyBook with lots of memory by MobiPocket Reader on WinXP (on Fusion, on my Mac).
delphidb96 12-22-2007, 02:46 AM And it works fine. I've also tried, and found works, the newer 'generic' 4GB that kinda-sorta looks like a SanDisk, but without the actuall SanDisk name. It works fine as long as I've only put <=2GB of files on it. Go over that 2GB limit and it can't access the other files.
Derek
HarryT 12-22-2007, 02:53 AM Best to avoid "Ultra" and other such fancy cards. The cheap basic ones are pretty much guaranteed to work; the fancy ones may not. Stick with 2GB cards as a max.
tompe 12-22-2007, 04:36 AM I use a SanDisk Ultra II 2G and it works perfectly.
Moonraker 12-22-2007, 05:45 AM I had a problem with the sd card that arrived with my Gen 3 last week but this is now solved. It didn't stop my Gen3 from working but the card did not appear to be recognised.
I thought it was because there were no books on it so I connected it via a card reader to Windows. When I tried to drag some books onto the card Windows gave some cryptic message (can't remember what it was) that it could not do this.
So I formatted the card (FAT), created three folders: eBooks, Music and Pictures and then copied and pasted some ebooks into the ebook folder.
I then removed the card correctly from Windows (using the "safely remove hardware" icon) and inserted it into the Gen3 and switched on.
Perhaps I was lucky because the card has worked perfectly ever since.:)
Moonraker 12-22-2007, 08:36 AM Hmmm, after adding and deleting some books the card is now NOT working.
I switched on my Gen3 and immediately noticed that many of the book thumbnail images were not paired up correctly to the relevant book. I re-connected the device to the PC and tried various things but in the end I couldn't even delete some stuff from the card. They would appear to be deleted only to re-appear when refreshed.
I then tried connecting the card to windows via the card reader only to find that Windows didn't recognise it. I couldn't eject it or format it either. It completely slowed my PC down to a crawl.
I ended up putting another smaller 512MB card into my card reader, adding some books and then inserting it into the Gen3. So far this is working correctly.
The card that arrived with my Gen3 is the Elite Pro 2GB and I now think it is faulty.

You know, I think I am now QUITE GLAD that they did not ship an SD card to me when they shipped me my 'engineering sample' unit. I had to go and scrounge my own... That, of course, led me to be as cheap as I could be and I went out and bought an older SanDisk 2GB SD card on eBay for about $7-including shipping-and I've not had a problem with it.
In fact, I can state that those 'no name' SD cards that kinda-sorta look like the SanDisk, but the labels don't actually HAVE 'SanDisk' printed on them (blue and red label with the text in white) work great in all of the 256MB to 4GB range. I know this because I'm looking at a stack of them sitting in my 'offline library' pile and they're all loaded with ebooks and have all been used in the past month.
Sometimes, cheaper IS better. :)

Ah, that sounds like what happened to my 2GB card: worked fine to start with but stopped working after I deleted the eBooks folder (which would then reappear again and disappear). In my case the Pictures folder claimed to be 137GB large, which I think has to be a problem on a 2GB card :-)
Formatting was a problem but possible in the end via Disk Manager (Explorer woudn't do it).
Helra12 12-26-2007, 10:25 AM Hello,
I'm French and it's my first message on this forum.
I had problems with my SD card until I noticed that I'had to format it in FAT 32.
Now everything is OK. Maybe this can help !

Helra,
Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!
You make a very good point. As I naturally format my SD cards to FAT32, this problem never arose for me.

Mine is FAT, no problems.
adelheid 12-27-2007, 02:04 AM Mine is FAT, no problems.
The card I had problems with was raw (i.e. not formatted at all). I think that is what may have caused my problems. FAT and FAT32 both seem OK to me.
Striking Claw 12-27-2007, 02:10 PM My 2GB SD cart which was part of the Cybook Deluxe works, but every time I conect my Cybook with my PC (running Windows Vista), I get an error message that the card may be corrupt and the selection to either repair it or continue without repair. It doesn't matter which one I choose, the next time I connect the Cybook I get the same error message. I tried to reformat the Card => same result.
I tried a 1GB MMC-Card and a 4GB SD Card (not a SDHC Card, which works in an ILiad and an HP hx4700 PocketPC). Both cards don't work at all in the Cybook. It seems that Bookeen uses a realy strange SD Controller.
ProfJulie 12-27-2007, 03:05 PM I am using a 1 GB Kingston SD card that I had laying around and it works fine so far...no formatting needed.

Certainly formatting is needed but yours happens to be already formatted. As you say it was laying around, probably from some earlier use. Most, if not all, name brand SD cards are preformatted these days so unless something happens that corrupts the card they do not need to be formatted again.
Dale
ProfJulie 12-27-2007, 06:25 PM I've been using SD cards for years in my pocket pcs. Most of the SD cards I've purchased have come preformated in FAT (which is the same as FAT16) format. I've only ever had to format one SD card and that one came to me unformated.
The one I am using in my CyBook, I got a few weeks ago with a thumb drive/card reader. I've never used it before and so I decided to use it with my CyBook.
What I've discovered with SD cards is that they all seem to be slightly different. If you have difficulty using an SD card, the first thing to do is to try reformatting it - you can use a USB card reader and use your computer's format utility to do it. If that does not work, try a different brand card.
Panin 12-28-2007, 12:49 PM So, what is the answer to a non-working SD card?
My Cybook arrived this afternoon, and I love it.
Mostly.
I can't seem to get it to read from the SD card.
If I plug it into the pc, Mobipocket reader can see the card, and I can access it via 'my computer'.
The Cybook itself, however, can't see the .prc files on the card.
This is driving me slowly batty. (or should I say, more batty?)
Any suggestions, please?
Panin.

Are you sure you have them stashed in the /eBooks folder? There needs to be an /eBooks folder on the SD card as well as the one on the Cybook. If you don't have such a folder and haven't put your ebooks IN that folder, they ain't gonna be seen no matter how loud you scream or how much hair you pull out.:smack:
Derek
tompe 12-28-2007, 06:53 PM Did you plug the card or the Cybook into your computer? If you connected the Cybook did you see two USB disks?
Did you place the files in the eBook folder?
Panin 01-02-2008, 04:31 AM Problems all solved by nicking the tiny weenie SD card from an old camera.
Interesting that the SD card supplied by Bookeen won't work, but that others will!

I did the same thing. And now use the Cybook card for other purposes (and it does work perfectly there).

I think you were lucky, because I tried this with no luck. FAT or FAT32, folders or not; nothing works. The card is a Sandisk 256 MB SD card.
