so then .. I ordered my Cybook 31st October and was really hoping that today would be the day of shipping ..

Unfortunately, it's now 6pm here and I've heard absolutely nothing from Fed-Ex so will go ahead and assume it won't ship today ..

Just wondering if anyone else has had any kind of info today? ..

feeling a little eeyore-ish now

No email, but 9th November, so I guess late this week is the best I can hope for. I wish there was something constructive I could do in the mean time...

Great news! But why M.H. gets it in one day and you in two days?

Perhaps it depends what flight it's on. Presumably there's a certain "cut off" for arrival time in the UK if it's to be delivered that same day.

I got my FedEx email at 4 AM. They expect delivery by 10:30 AM tomorrow? Here in the US? Well, if they can pull that off I'll be amazed, but I'm not counting on it. Especially not this close to the holidays. There isn't a location listed, so the package hasn't even been scanned yet.

I'm just thrilled it's on it's way. For those keeping track, it's order 4240.

Wow. Bookeen must be getting lots of orders.

From what I've seen, some of you have order numbers in the 3000 and 4000 ranges. I ordered mine a few days ago and my number is in the 7000s!

I hope I'll get mine before Christmas, but there was a warning on their store that it will be shipped anywhere in between the 18 to the 21st of December. Let's hope!

I got an email at 3:30 am (CST) saying that mine (order 4198) had shipped yesterday at 9:45 am and it's due here by 10:30 today! That seems insanely fast.

We're in a bit of a ice storm, though, so I am not really expecting it. Particularly as I'm about to head cautiously into work and I'm not sure if I ever heard if they're requiring signatures for the reader or not.

And the tracking itself isn't actually revealing any details on the Cybook's current location, anyway.

I received email at 1:06 PST that my order (4233) would be shipping today, scheduled for arrival before 10:30am tomorrow. Yay!

Update: At first the tracking tool said: "Package data transmitted to FedEx". Now it says:"In transit". So I think that means my package is really on its way.

Update: The tracker says my package has progressed from Aubilliers, FR to Paris, FR.

Update: The tracker indicates my package has arrived at Memphis, TN, cleared customs and departed for the Pacific coast!

Update: My package has arrived at Oakland, CA, 10 miles north of here! I'll be madly rechecking status until I see the "out for delivery" notice!

I ordered a few days ago as well and have a number in the 7400s. However, both when I placed my order and now as well, the Bookeen shop is warning that orders placed now will ship between December 14 and 18, not the 18 to 21. Hopefully, that means that production is ramping up at a better rate and we'll all get ours by Christmas!

I wondered the same as well. My first guess was that they have a warehouse in the US that they ship from.

It would be lovely to get it by the weekend so I can show it off to some friends that are coming up. I'm hoping the estimated delivery time changes to Friday at some point. If I refresh the screen enough anything is possible.... :)

Cargo flights are generally overnight. Mine flew from France to Stansted one day, from Stansted to Manchester overnight, then local delivery the next day. If you're in southern Scotland they'll probably fly it from Stansted to Glasgow or Edinburgh and then deliver from there, or Aberdeen if you're in the north.

Would you mind my asking what fees (taxes/brokerage) you got hit with when it came into Canada? I have generally had good luck, but I have been hit hard a couple of times with orders from overseas in the past. I am not sure what to expect.

It got here .. a day earlier than the Fed-Ex estimate! .. quite surprising altho they did seem to have allowed rather too much time even considering I live in the boonies!

Anyways .. of course, it's gorgeous! .. and so simple ..

I swapped my iRex for the Cybook and the first thing that i noticed was how much smaller the screen is on the Cybook but in other ways it's a lot more 'beautiful' .. the case is a LOT better and for less price and the fact it just uses a simple USB cable is a LOT better too! .. the iRex system meant cables all over the place! ..

Now i'm going to play .. need to redownload my ebooks once i find the post here (at mobileread) that tells me where to find the PID! ..

I went back to one of the older posts with pictures of the brown/tan cover. There are a couple of differences besides color when compared to the black cover I received: The brown cover doesn't appear to have the pen-holder or inside front-cover pockets. The black cover has a cut-out over the LED. There is also no Cybook logo embossed on the outside front cover. The black cover has a closure: there is a black leather strip that slides into a pocket on the front. I didn't see one on the brown cover pictures.

I am shocked. When the Fedex site updated, it showed that it wasn't picked up until a day later than originally stated. What is amazing is that it has gone from AUBERVILLIERS FR, to PARIS FR, to MEMPHIS, TN, and is now in Ottawa. All this occurred between 4:40 P.M. yesterday and 4:32 A.M. today. Even allowing for time zones, that is fast service. If it clears customs quickly, I will actually have it today.

Did you order the leather cover with your CyBook? I ordered the "Deluxe" pack - perhaps you only get the tan cover with that? The tan cover has a magnetic closure, by the way. Works fine, and improves with usage as the leather gets softer.

Maybe they're assigning numbers to all the packages and it just hasn't shipped yet. We've been known to do that where work when something is going out in a day or so, getting all the shipping labels printed and put on the boxes beforehand.

As for me, mine shipped on the 11th. They tried to deliver it in OH yesterday, but I wasn't home so they left a door hanger on my door. I should get it today.

Did you order the leather cover with your CyBook? I ordered the "Deluxe" pack - perhaps you only get the tan cover with that? The tan cover has a magnetic closure, by the way. Works fine, and improves with usage as the leather gets softer.
I did order the "Deluxe" pack. The magnetic closure sounds keen. It's probably a little less "in the way" when reading than is my cover's leather closure-strap.

Thanks for the sympathy Loopy.

I've emailed contact@bookeen.com and orders@bookeen.com a couple of hours ago - no reply as yet (not expecting a solution this quick, but a 'we're checking' email would be reassuring).

I must say, the speed with which they extracted their money from my CC account, led me to think they were a remarkably efficient outfit.
Unfortunately, subsequent events are leading me to revise my opinion somewhat.

I'm not throwing my toys out of the pram just yet (we all mistakes); but I am gathering them round me in preparation.

As you say, they improved with usage. When the cover was new the magnetic closure did not work well at all. Unfortunately you see the magnets under the leather when you are reading a book which is a bit irritating. Otherwise I really like the cover.

Hahahah. But in all seriousness, almost all of the payment portals take the money out as soon as possible. This is to make sure that the customer has indeed paid for their product before they even start the whole packing and shipping process.

Can't complain much about that. And hey, we also all agreed to wait a bit before getting our devices. Playing the waiting game can be fun, if it's going to be delivered before christmas.

Mine just arrived here in Canada. I got the black cover. It looks nice to me. The Cybook is so slim I almost missed it under the leather cover in the package.

The total cost for fees was $19.55. It was listed as a book with a value of $200 on the forms. This was a relief for me. Saved me a few dollars from what I was fearful of.

It is charging up now. I will give my impressions later.

Another thing it would have been nice to hear about from Bookeen. Instead, their FAQ says

Once your order has been shipped you receive your tracking number by email. By clicking the tracking number you can trace the progress of the package.

Which is slightly (and, I admit, only slightly) misleading. I feel like a kid waiting for :xmas: -- impatient as hell because I just know it's going to be great!

(I have a new appreciation for the slogan "Wherever. Whenever. With Fedex.com"...)

Well, they initially said it would be shipped on Dec 5th; and then said they shouldn't have said that.
Then they said it'd be sent on 12th for delivery on 13th - but now I discover its gone AWOL.

But, things go wrong in the best businesses, and I can understand if I got unlucky this time.

However, I do think Bookeen could do more to keep customers informed.
They could use their blog to let us know what's going on ("To keep you informed, visit Bookeen's blog") - but they don't .
They could acknowledge receipt of emails - but they don't.

That's the disappointing aspect imho.

Currently, I have no idea where I stand with my Bookeen order; and I'm not seeing much help coming my way. :sad3:
I'm sure the Cybook is a great device; but if this is typical of Bookeen customer support; I think I'd settle for just getting my money back.

That's what happened to mine for about a day - package data received at 9:45am on the 10th, but nothing actually shipped out until quite late on the 11th, probably 30+ hours later. After that it moved incredibly fast, however. So hopefully yours will, as well.

It seems our Cybooks are sharing a truck ride, Leeloo: mine has just arrived in Paris as well. Now I just need to make sure somebody is at home tomorrow morning to receive the package!

I have to say, though, that with all the negative comments about the device mounting up and with Bookeen disastrously bad at keeping their customers informed, I'm starting to get a little bit worried. 450 Euros is a lot of money, and I would really hate if it would turn out to be money down the drain. Argh! :(

Could it be the black cover is the one that M-Edge is selling?

I went over to their site, and it looks exactly like the case I got. They want $54.99 for their case, but I only paid $39.95 to Bookeen. If it's the same case, I got a good deal.

I really am enjoying this reader. I've been reading on a PocketPC for years, and I have to stop myself from touching the screen to turn pages. The button is a little stiff, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. The screen is a lot easier on the eyes, and my rechargeable Great Point Light works with the case, so I don't miss the backlighting so much. After the first charge I read the manual, and the device froze up. After a little panic attack, I got it going again, and it hasn't happened since. Syncing with Mobi reader is flawless, and the RSS feeds work great.

I have to say, though, that with all the negative comments about the device mounting up and with Bookeen disastrously bad at keeping their customers informed, I'm starting to get a little bit worried.

I made it to Basel overnight "for clearance", so we'll find out what the Swiss customs think of it all. I agree that it's a pity Bookeen isn't a bit more communicative. A post on the blog like this:

We're swamped! So many of you have ordered Cybooks -- far more than we'd dared dream -- that we're behind in shipping orders. It didn't help that a simple programming error on the website -- too many late nights debugging the firmware! -- meant lots of you were expecting something shortly after the 5th of December.

So here's what's happening. We are pushing our manufacturer to ship to us as fast as it can. The Cybooks arrive in France in batches of a few thousand which we, and the fabulous temps we've hired ("Merci, Jean-Luc!") then unpack, test, load the software, test again, and then repack into the separate orders for you patient folks. At this point we send the address details to Fedex and you get your tracking email. Please note, the "Estimated delivery" time Fedex puts on their site at this point is arbitrary. Then, sometime in the next 48 hours (often sooner) Fedex actually picks the packages up and the tracking site will update with a new delivery estimate. We chose Fedex because they are the best of the global logistics providers for our situation, but the vagaries of international shipping and customs procedures mean that any delivery time will only be an estimate. Although we have noticed a tendency for the packages to be slightly early rather than very late!

In short, please bear with us while we try to catch up. We really are doing our best to keep faith with all of you who have made -- are making! -- the Cybook a great success.

PS Please help us get the word out to other Bookeen customers who might have concerns.

(a complete fantasy on my part) wouldn't (didn't) take long to write and would have made me, at least, feel better about things.

I never went for the deluxe set, not really valuing the leather case (or at least preferring one in black or non-leather). Wondering if many other folks decided on not going with the case? I have a feeling it might make it a little bit easier to hold with the case, in retrospect.

For the record, I ordered mine on November 6th and got it yesterday.

Very nifty little device, considering I'm coming from a REB 1100 reader. This is MUCH easier on the eyes. I do miss the taping on the screen to select things though.

I ordered the deluxe kit and got the black case myself.

No problems other than getting used to how stiff the 4 way button is...

Though I do have a few suggestions on how to make it better.

Harry, yes, I know. :) Apparently it's the cover that's sold at M-Edge (http://www.buymedge.com/p_cybook_gleather.html). I would have preferred the original brown cover because the chocolate brown colour makes for a nicer "old book" feel, whereas the black jacket is more the executive type. In addition, the leather strap that is used to close the black cover will probably get in your way when you're reading, whereas the brown cover is held closed by integrated magnets.

The thing that bugs me most about this is that Bookeen has once more not informed its customers about this change. We all know that they're probably a rather small company, so one does of course make allowances for that. However, they could have sent a form e-mail to everybody that unfortunately they have run out of the original covers, but have replacements at hand. Or they could have included a form letter with some sort of explanation in the actual package. If that had happened, all would have been fine. But to simply send a different product to your customer? That's what I find unacceptable. *sigh*

But I have to tell you, it's even worse when the package is finally on the truck (okay, probably in the truck -- but who knows with these prepositions?), 'cause you start wondering what the heck has happened to the truck. Has it got lost? Has it got stuck in a traffic jam? Hasn't the driver found your address???

I think I might have worried the FedEx man who brought me my package: I was so happy it had finally arrived that I nearly hugged the poor man. :D

Doesn't seem so. The biggest order number I've seen in this thread so far was around 6500.

I, personally, have a number of 7500. I think they'll be shipping it monday or tuesday if they keep up this rate. Of course, that's assuming that they don't ship on weekends. It would be amazing if they did!

In addition, the leather strap that is used to close the black cover will probably get in your way when you're reading, whereas the brown cover is held closed by integrated magnets.

The strap really doesn't get in the way normally, but when I read I fold the front cover all the way back and the slip the strap into the slot on the front cover. I like the bigger pocket inside - I read a few series- like In Death by J.D. Robb, and I keep notes on their order tucked inside. I don't see myself using the smaller pockets or the pen holder. I think the brown cover looks classier, but I'm quite happy with the case I got.

If they're up to 6500-ish now, that means they've shipped about 4000 since release. That's pretty good going in not more more than a month!

I have an order number in the 78XXs. With any luck they'll send a tracking number and it will arrive next week. Unfortunately I'm away on a business trip next week, so I doubt I'll be able to post any tracking/delivery info. And since it's a gift from my wife I suspect that she may just snag it and then it will show up under the tree. (Which would make me very happy!)

Actually, does anyone know how accurate the estimated delivery times have been? I got the email yesterday and the tracking page hasn't changed since, so I'm not sure whether to trust the delivery time and stay home from work to hug the Fedex man or not... :)

The estimate for me was very accurate. There was a nerve-wracking gap between the first email and the first change in status of a few hours, but once I saw that the package was on its way, I felt better. The delivery was about an hour before the scheduled delivery time.

Mine was about 3 hours late - based on the 'by 10:30 am' schedule - but we also had some fairly ugly weather the day before, which probably slowed everything down.

You'd probably get it that day, though, as long as it says "on fedex truck for delivery by 7ish am".

Mine was scheduled to ship on Dec 5th from a Nov 21st order (563X).

Got the Fedex email on Dec 13th that data was transmitted.

Spoke with Fedex, they didn't have a record -- told them about the data transmitted and they related this just meant the shipper had printed a label and it hadn't been picked up.

It actually started showing real ship status the following day -- supposed to receive it on Monday the 17th (not bad for France -> US in 4 days).

So the recommendation I give is they got slammed with orders because everyone saw the Kindle coming out and decided to see what other readers were worth buying and their ship date estimates are a little off.

Be patient ;).

Is it correct that FedEx does one delivery in the morning and one in the afternoon? Because my tracking record noted that the parcel had arrived at the local FedEx station when the delivery truck had already left (this was for the delivery by 12:00 p.m.). So I got my package in the afternoon instead.

I had that; when I rang my local Fed Ex for advice, they said they didn't have any record of the package.
They didn't deliver by the estimated date given with the "Package data transmitted to FedEx" - it arrived a day later.

I think you'll get a realistic indication of delivery time, once the tracking page starts to show movement information.

Still no email here, either, and the Bookeen shop was promising shipping between December 14-18 when I ordered (number in the high 74XXs). I've noticed that they've now completely removed the projected shipping date from the shop, which doesn't bode too well in my mind... :worried2:

Right now, I'm just hoping that my Cybook makes it here before Christmas, case or no case. I'm sure that I can scrounge something up as a temporary measure if need be.

Heck, I work for a library; surely I can find something out of the various DVD-cases that will do the job... Hmm, that might work... :chinscratch:

I am very unhappy with Bookeen. They charged my CC the day after I placed my order (Dec 5) when the projected ship date was Dec 14 - 18 and all companies I've worked with in the past charged the CC when they were ready to ship. Now that ship date has passed and from what I see on this forum they are nowhere near my order (71xx) and might have stopped shipping, and they don't respond to e-mails requesting more information. I also note that they have no projected ship dates on the web page anymore so someone ordering today would be expecting their order to ship within a couple days. Of course the lack of this notice might mean they have a good supply in stock and can ship, but somehow I doubt that. The problem I have with them charging the CC before shipping is that the CC bill will come due before I receive the Cybook and I won't pay for something I have not received and will have to dispute the charge with my CC bank before the due date. I really want the Cybook so I hope that they will ship soon. I would suggest that after this shipping crunch is over that they change their web page to show 1) projected ship date, 2) actual ship date, 3) FedEx tracking number, on the order detail page for each order. As it is now if the FedEx e-mail gets lost in cyberspace the recipient has no way to know if the order was shipped and no way to check on it. They leave much to desire in keeping customers informed.

Antonieb

I totaly agree. haven't send them any mail though so about the handling of support I can't say a word.

But they should communicatie more.. simple entry's on the official bookeen blog or on the shop site are so simple.

Now we can only guess what's happening.. I already gave up and don't think my christmas present will be here on time.

About the Creditcard charge.. are u sure ? because that would be really ugly indeed.. I don't want them to charge me if the things isn't even produced yet.

Brad

It is a bit disturbing. When I ordered the website said the device would ship between Dec 14 - 18. Now they knew at that time how many orders they had and how many units were being manufactured, so I don't see how there can be a problem.

Likewise I do not like having my CC charged so far in advance of actually shipping the unit.

I'm willing to give them a few more days to either ship or at least explain what is going on. They really do need to make more use of that blog, it would cut down on the emails they have to deal with.

I've e-mail them for more information but I haven't received a response yet. I'll give them until the end of the year to either ship or tell me what is happening, then I'll make a decision to cancel the order or not. I prefer Cybook because of the ability to read secure Mobibooks, but I might switch to Sony eReader even though I don't like to be tied to the Sony store and Win PC (I'm a MAC user).

Why not e-mail Bookeen and ask them what the projected shipping date for your order is? If you're unhappy with their answer, you can cancel your order. That would seem to be a better way of handling in than disputing the charge, which causes a lot of hassle for everybody concerned.

In fairness, Bookeen do state on the ordering page that they charge your card at the time that you place your order.

Harry T,
I have e-mailed them for shipping information but have not received a response yet. If there is a message that they charge the CC when the order is placed, I missed it. In any case that wouldn't have been a problem if they shipped as they indicated (Dec 14 - Dec 18), when I placed the order or even if they ship before the end of the year, but after that it will be a problem.

have to admit the taking of the money quite so early on wasn't very impressive (altho, 'normal' practice). They did deliver in the end for me tho (and for most others too I think?) .. I did wonder how much money is being made by taking payment immediately and yet not shipping until a month later .. it would certainly mount up I would think.

Loving my Cybook tho .. I would like to see a slightly better communications from Bookeen in the future, that may be wishful thinking?

thats a bummer...

Let's hope that shipments are delayed because they are double checking the SD card readers of the Cybook :)

have to admit the taking of the money quite so early on wasn't very impressive (altho, 'normal' practice).

Loopy

I would hope tha isn't wishful thinking and that after this fiasco they'll get their act sorted out. Simple blogs and form emails would keep everyone a lot less edgy would stop them receiving so many emails about the same issues. If I could have shopped through anyone else I would have!

I would imagine they will be making a lot of money from storing payments for so long but that doesn't bother me in the slightest - with any luck it will be used for improvements and upgrades!

Feeling sorry for all those having a hard time and I hope you receive your cybooks in time for christmas. If not have a good one anyway :)
I can let you know that it's worth all the hassle - i'm really loving mine.

If they are not shipping it might have something to do with the SD card problem that I've seen in other messages. If so it would be nice if they would let us know.

Due to continuing heavy customer demand, the Cybook Gen3 is sold out again. Because orders are prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis, please order now to reserve your place in line. We will e-mail you with an estimated delivery date as soon as we have more information.
Please note that in all cases your Cybook Gen3 will not arrive before early 2008 and that your credit card will be charged upon order.

One thing you mentioned in one of your prior posts caught my attention - their charging your credit card prior to actually shipping. I believe I can explain this as it is relevant to how we at NAEB are going to have to handle the money.

Bookeen has to pay the OEM manufacturer making the hardware before *they* will ship, and, I am willing to guess that for large quantity orders, Bookeen may well not have the cash-flow to pay before orders are placed with them. As these devices are coming from China or Korea (or somewhere in that region), there's a shipping-time delay.

The same is pretty much going to happen with anyone ordering through Not Another E-Book (NAEB). Especially as we are just now setting up for our first batch order from Bookeen. So be prepared to pay and wait for about two weeks to a month for the Cybooks you order from NAEB. Obviously, as we get a batch order ready, we're planning on ordering a few dozen extra per batch to build up an 'in-stock' supply. But that won't be the case for this first set of orders.

This does not speak well of Bookeen: they knew how many units they had on hand and they still kept selling them when they knew they would run short.

Now I'm faced with the decision of staying with the Cybook or canceling my order with Bookeen and going to BestBuy and purchase a Sony ebook reader and try to get it to work with a Mac for both DRM and non-DRM ebooks. :|

You need to cut them a bit of slack. To order 1000 Cybooks from the manufacturer, Bookeen probably needs to front 300,000 dollars or so. They fronted 4000-5000 units which is 1.2.1.5 million dollars of inventory. They probably don't have the capital to order more than that at once. Now that this batch is shipped and done with, the manufacturer is producing the next order, but it is Christmas time so they probably won't take delivery till January.

I'm guessing there's a holdup due to the popularity of the Kindle as well - Amazon and Bookeen are probably both trying to get their hands on the same screens so that new readers can be built.

I can understand your frustration and impatience. I began seriously considering an ebook reading device with the announcement of the Sony Reader over a year ago. It quickly became apparent that, unless you were using Windows, there were many barriers to being able to fully utilize that device (in addition to their DRM format and problematic ebook store). Then, I began exploring other alternatives on MobileRead.com. When NAEB announced that Bookeen would have a device that seemed to both be accessible by non-Windows users and have a broad ebook format capability, I immediately placed that device at the top of the list. That was many months ago. Since then Amazon introduced Kindle. I took a good look at that as a possible device to meet my needs, but eventually decided that the Bookeen Cybook remained the best choice for me - despite all the delays. There is no perfect ebook reader at this point in time. You need to seriously consider your own situation and needs, then make a choice.

Brad,

Now I'm being facetious here... "Best of Luck!!!" :D

Okay, I'm back to my normal self...

Look, if you want to try to get a Mac to work with the Sony PRS-505, go ahead, but know this. It's PC software doesn't work on a Mac. BookDesigner, which can turn non-LRF ebooks into LRF files, doesn't work on a Mac. Sony hates Mac users.

How do you think we feel over at Not Another E-Book? We finally managed to get all our corporate registration paperwork in line, got our merchant account set up and have just two more PHP scripts to finish before we can bring our e-store online and we just found out - via my *happening* to drop by the Bookeen BLOG - that they're sold out - AGAIN!!!

But if you're a Mac user or you want to have the NAEB package deal, you'll just have to wait as we will.

Sony's reader works the exact same way as the Cybook. It mounts as a drive on your Mac and you just drag and drop the files you want. If you want DRM, you will NEED to use Windows. Same thing goes for the Cybook. They don't have a Mac MobiWhatever client.

I live in Canada. Sony doesn't sell their reader here (idiots). If I had the opportunity, I would have gotten the Sony from day one. The Cybook is the 2nd best choice overall, in my opinion.

I'm REALLY hoping that this is for current orders, and not past orders and for people like us who have ordered at the beginning of December. If this is true, then geez, I don't know what to do. (Anyone want to help me smuggle in a Sony reader? :-P)

For non-DRM books, you can use Libprs500 on your MAC. The only thing you'd need Ebook Library for is to purchase ebooks via The eBook Store.

Don't forget the 505, the Jinke v3, & NuuT also use the same 6" Vizplex screen.

My guess is between the 505, Kindle, Gen3 and not as much the others, the screens are at a shortage.

Let me dispel some of the misinformation....

Ebook Library that comes witht he 505 is for Windows only. But if you do not plan on purchasing ebook from Sony's eBook Store you can use Libprs500 on a MAC to talk to the 505 to handle the content and even collections as well as content conversion to LRF and there is even a previewer for LRF. Also, you can try Wine on OS X to see if it woill work with Ebook Library for downloading ebooks and talking to the 505. But DO NOT use Wine or Paralells to update the firmware as you might brick the 505. Ebook Library is known to work with Parallels.

Now, as for the Gen3, you cannot read Mobi format ebooks with DRM on OS X. You need Windows for that. But, you can purchase and download ebooks for the Gen3 via your web brower. No need for any other software. But if you want to use the Mobipocket tools such as Mobigen or Mobipocket Desktop, you'll need Windows. Again, you can give Wine a try.

Book Designer is Windows. You can try Wine or Parallels. Can't say what will work or not.

So basically, if you are on OS X. I suggest Bootcamp and Windows XP so you can use all the available tools no matter if you have a 505 or Gen3. The problem is, OS X is not very well supported.

Thanks to all of you for the info on the Sony. The Sony isn't looking so good if I want to read DRM'd books unless I run Win XP via BootCamp.

I'll look at the iRex some more. It looks promising for use with a Mac and reading DRM'd books.
