View Full Version : Availability of the 505.
JohnsnowNW 12-07-2007, 10:08 AM Has anyone had trouble finding the (Dark Blue) 505. Everyone seems to be out of them, that is, everyone selling them under $299. Has anyone heard if there is a shortage? I just need to know whether to cancel my order and just purchase one with the higher price. Thanks.

igorsk 12-07-2007, 10:35 AM SonyStyle seems to have it.

Ozric 12-07-2007, 10:36 AM Actually, I couldn't find one in either color around here. I ended up ordering mine from Crutchfield and paying for overnight shipping.
mcramer 12-07-2007, 10:50 AM I'm visiting LA and found one easily enough at the the Sony store in the Beverly Centre. I bought it and took it back an hour later due to it looking purple in bright sunlight. Happy with the silver one now :)

I got mine from Data Vision for $279 shipped. Mine arrived today and the last time I checked they were still showing stock on the blue & silver.

This may be a bit :offtopic:, but..
May I ask how many days it took from order to delivery when you purchased one from datavis? I am thinking about buying one from datavis, but I need to get it by the end of the next week.
Thanks for your help. :)

It took them 5 business days to get it to me with standard (free) shipping.

If that is the case, I guess I should choose not-free shipping option. :thanks:
csmith75 12-07-2007, 08:48 PM I ordered a dark blue PRS-505 from the SonyStyle store. It was supposed to ship on 12.5.07, but it's still listed as processing. I've called twice and emailed and can't get a decent explanation as to why it hasn't shipped. I'm starting to think they don't have it in stock.
JSWolf 12-07-2007, 10:11 PM csmith75 where is it you live? Do you have a local Sony Style store?
JohnsnowNW 12-08-2007, 01:17 AM Thanks for the info so far. CostCentral is where I have placed my order, and they just keep changing the "Back-in-Stock" date every time their estimate is reached. Quite annoying. I may check into some of the other suggested retailers.

JohnsnowNW 12-10-2007, 03:01 PM Update:
So, I'm canceling my order through CostCentral. I want to order through Datavision.com...but they don't seem to have a positive seller rating. Has anyone had trouble ordering from them?
urseus 12-10-2007, 04:06 PM Oh man, youve got to get silver. We are reading books IN THE FUTURE!! You have to look the part. Its so pretty and sleek. Blue looks like it would get chucked around uncaringly alot.

Future smuture...I've never liked the look of sliver electronics, and I think the dark blue is more my style. I went ahead and ordered the reader from Sony Style. After the Cost Central debacle, I'm just going to go straight to the source. I'd only save $20 ordering through Datavision, and that's not enough to sway me.
mcramer 12-11-2007, 03:28 PM yeah - i thought the same regarding the dark blue version being for me and all that.
until i flew 12 hours and saw one in the flesh that is :)
looked great in the shop - a lovely deep blue, almost navy blue. i took it out of the shop and sat down at the nearest cafe to check it out only discover (IMO) that the unit looked completely different in natural light! it took on a really purple tinge that i didn't like at all!
back to the shop and a quick change to silver and i'm a very happy man :) each to their own of course, YMMV etc..............

Yeah, I am a bit worried about the purple tinge...but I figured I probably wouldn't be in too many places with lighting that would affect it that much. That said, I haven't seen it in person...so that worries me a bit.

G'day Marc,
You know, mate, I'm excited and all about getting a device, but I don't think my passion extends to flying 12 hours to see one. ;)
Now...well I'm caught between the Sony and the Cybook, and the Cybook's winning the race for my affections (the voices in my head that like the Cybook are definitely shouting louder than the Sony voices. The voices in my head that like the Iliad and wanted one from Dymocks are in the corner crying at the moment).
Cheers,
Marc (and I only just got what you meant previously when you said "another one" to me. I'm slow, eh, bro? ;) )

I've decided to sell my Kindle on craigslist and go with the Sony instead. I couldn't find one anywhere locally so I just placed an order with DataVistion. Their shopping experience is just plain weird--I entered the info to check out, got an order number and then clicked around to see what else they had. I realized that my item never disappeared from the cart which made me think the order didn't work. I clicked on order status with my order number and it didn't seem to think it was valid. I ended up calling customer service and the guy basically said that he hears this all the time and they really need to fix it. My shopping cart won't be "emptied" until the order is processed.
Well, I hope it all works out--the Silver Sony 505 was only $269. If Frys had it stock, it would have been $299 plus tax.
I stopped by CompUSA today. They had the 505 and the 500 for 10% off their regular prices of $299 and (I think)$199.

Why don't you just return it for a refund? You can't of had it for 30 days yet.

Yeah their site was a little funky and they are not the fastest in sending confirmation emails. But I did get a confirmation email followed up by a tracking # when it shipped.....and most important of all got the reader in a reasonable amount of time and in great shape :) .
I have just ordered my Sony Reader from datavis.com for $249.99!! I've used the coupon I've found in retailmenot.com with $20 off!!
Coupon code is: 2LGAMN9ATTLZW8OY9J4ZO
Datavision's website says you also get ground shipping for free, but when ordering online they still charge you $7 for shipping/handling and there's no oway to change that on the page. Still, $256,9 is a great price for the 505!
Hope you take advantage of this!
regards

I am now. I took it off of craigslist because so many locals were contacting me to whine about the price. At least Ebay gives you a true measure of what the market value is for any item.
In the meantime, I finally got the confirmation from datavis on the Sony. I'm looking forward to reading the book I bought and converted to the Kindle (with help from this forum) and now converting it to the Sony to finish reading it.
imahawki 12-18-2007, 07:05 AM I ordered a silver 505 from JandR. I have no idea if its really in stock. It says "usually ships in 3-5 days". I hope that's right. If I don't have it next week I might hunt for another retailer that guarantees its in stock and do overnight shipping.
pilotbob 12-19-2007, 03:13 PM sell it on Ebay, some are going for $1000
Good point. But, I would NEVER buy something on eBay over retail. Also, buying stuff at over retail prices just makes people buy stuff only to sell it on eBay. We should shut that market down.

You want to eliminate free-market capitalism? I have absolutely no problems with people trying to "flip this kindle" because the alternatives are much worse. A bubble will develop and then pop...
I've decided to keep my Kindle, by the way, and my son is taking the 505. We will probably trade back and forth, depending on content availability and price.

No, I want to stop "price gouging". What people who buy stuff like that don't realize is that if they DIDN'T, then there might be one in the store at retail!
Sort of like SPAM... people only SPAM because it works.

See what Amazon e-reader hype does?

Given that the Kindle, Sony, and Gen3 are ALL back-ordered, and all use the same screen, it's probable that the issue is the manufacturing capability of the screen makers, eInk.

The screen maker is PVI in this case, in Taiwan. The short supply of screen is a real problem...
