View Full Version : where did the ebay guy go???
After weeks and months of deliberation and being thoroughly disappointed by all the new devices, I was just on the verge of committing and buying an ebookwise 1150 from ebay to tide me over until the e-ink devices get it together.
I went to ebay and I cannot find any mention of them anywhere - all my searches come up blank. I was on there yesterday and they were even on sale.
Can anyone find them on ebay? If not, do you think it means something (like he's sold out and ETI are going to announce a new reader or like he's sold out and retiring leaving us overseas people with one less reader to choose from?)
I'm so disappointed (again!!!!) AND can't find a crying smilie to express myself...
Sparrow 12-07-2007, 01:24 AM Found this one with "Auction ended early with Buy It Now."

It went for $112; they're going for $129.95 on the eBookwise site:

There are a couple of crying smilies (contradiction in terms?).
Bring up the "More" panel, hit Ctrl-F and enter "cry" as the search term:
 :bigcry:
:)
Hey thanks Sparrow
When I read more closely (I couldn't even find this link on my own) , they only had 12 left in stock but are getting another shipment on Dec 10 - I guess this is why there is no more current listings. I have emailed them to find out...
NatCh 12-07-2007, 10:06 AM Is there some reason you don't want to buy straight from eboowise, mrsp? I think they're running a sale at the moment: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16896

Apparently the shortage of kindles has caused a run on ebw-1150's
HarryT 12-07-2007, 10:54 AM Not only Kindles, of course; you can't buy a CyBook Gen3 for either love or money at the moment.

yeah - they won't let me because I am in Australia and, as usual, they won't ship outside the US
NatCh 12-07-2007, 06:03 PM Ah, I wondered if it might be something like that. :sad2:
kjn24 12-07-2007, 07:26 PM The ebay seller I bought from is "kascarlett", and she has two listed in her auctions - I think her real name is Barbara something. If you still have trouble finding her let me know, and I'll link you to the auctions. I had a great experience with her - she knew how anxious I was, and went out in a Jersey thunderstorm on a Saturday to put mine in the mail.
Kathy
Well I haven't had a response to my email yet but the auction seems to be back up so I've put in my order....looks like I finally made a decision :-)

Someone in the UK said on another thread that they'd been able to buy from eBookwise by agreeing to forego the warranty. The issue is that the eb has a 110v only power supply, so you need to get a voltage converter to use it in those parts of the world like Europe and Australia which have 230/240v electricity.
EDIT: Just found the post; see:

that's exactly right but you buy the device from the ebay seller (even that poster did that) and agree with her to forego the warranty. You can buy books direct from ebookwise with no problems afterwards.
I once contacted the ebay seller before for info (and have stupidly lost it) but it explained in detail the type of converter to buy and so I'm not too worried about that part.
In one of the discussion posts following Dear Author's review of ebook readers, it is suggested that the ebay seller is actually related to the people that run ebookwise.
HarryT 12-08-2007, 04:28 AM Ah, thank you for the clarification. Sorry - I thought that the poster referred to had bought directly from eBookWise.
Just wanted to say a big :thanks: to everyone for their help - I found the auction and put in a buy it now order for $112. There was a discount on the shipping as part of the Christmas sale so it was only $35 so all up its $147 or $171.97 in Australian dollars.
It will be shipped on Monday US time and should take about 5 days to get here which will probably work out to be Monday week local time.
:thanks: again
Gamesteacher 12-09-2007, 04:42 AM voltage converter
I live in Korea and bought my ebook reader from ebookwise by having it mailed to a friend in Canada who then forwarded it on to me. I use a voltage converter to run all of my 110 appliances as Korea uses 220.
On the Fictionwise@yahoogroups.com newsgroup, Dale and Robert posted about a small converter that can be plugged into 110 or 220:
"You can get one from www.millionbuy. com for $4.95 Do a search for Coby CA-44 I bought one as a backup from them, works great."
You may want to find someone in the US who can receive and then forward it to you because the shipping cost is quite high otherwise. That is what I will be doing so I can take it with me while travelling.

Thanks for this Pat. I have been running around looking for the right thing to use for the last 2 days. The Colby CA-44 definitely looks like what i need.
Unfortunately millionbuy don't accept foreign credit cards except for AMEX an their shipping was very high so I am trying to find someone else who can sell me one. no luck on ebay either.
My local electronics store was no help - they had one for like $60 but it was the wrong frequency - 50HZ instead of 60HZ. He told me an ac adapter would be cheaper if I could find the right one but they didn't have any so my hunt continues.
I got my actual ebookwise from ebay - there is a seller who is happy to ship outside the US and she will be shipping my order today (US time). She said it would take about 5 days to arrive.
So far I haven't found anyone who can ship me a power adapter in the same or a shorter time frame.
DaleDe 12-10-2007, 09:10 AM The frequency doesn't matter much. None of the adapters translate the frequency but since the power to the device is really DC anyway there should not be a problem. 50 Hz generates a bit more heat that 60 Hz devices so if the power adapter was only rated for 60 Hz it could overheat on 50 Hz power but the reverse is no problem.
$60 should be a pretty advanced power adapter for that price. You really just need to meet the specs with an adapter with the correct connector. The connector can be trough part. Check Radio Shack if have one.

You'd think so wouldn't you?? It wasn't though - it was just a transformer. The guy in the shop did say to me that I would find it cheaper just to find the right ac adapter but I didn't understand him until now - boy am I learning more than I ever wanted to know about power supplies

I have ordered an ac adapter from Hong Kong via ebay that produces the right output and comes with 6 different plugs which I am told should cover about 90% of devices. I am figuring if the colby one works then the ebookwise probably has a fairly standard one covered by one of the 6.:fingersx:
A risky move but I am just too impatient to be able to bear getting the device and not being able to plug it in immediately :happybounce:
If I am wrong then I can apparently get someone (I don't know who) to swap the plugs for me. Or just try to resell that adapter on ebay and then try to get the colby one or something...
Having the adapter means you don't need to use the one that comes with the unit at all and, to my way of thinking, it reduces the risk of accidentally plugging the 110v straight into the wall without the transformer and blowing the whole thing up :skull:
Moonraker 12-12-2007, 06:29 AM If you live in the UK any Maplin's store will have them:
You only need a low wattage one because the eBookwise is about 18 watts.
This one is suitable:

I am giving the postal service a bit of slack given its Christmas but am eagerly checking my post office daily - havent been down there this morning. hopefully today is the day...:happybounce:

Gatton 12-30-2007, 04:26 AM Hey mrsp,
How are you liking the 1150 now that you've had it for a couple of weeks? Read anything good?
woldinghamuk 12-30-2007, 10:51 AM Thanks for this Pat. I have been running around looking for the right thing to use for the last 2 days. The Colby CA-44 definitely looks like what i need.
so does it mean that when I have the coby ca-44 adapter (http://www.millionbuy.com/cbycav1.html), I can just plug it in my ebookwise and I do not need to use the original charger they supply?
Hey mrsp,
How are you liking the 1150 now that you've had it for a couple of weeks? Read anything good?
Hi Gatton
I'm really loving it. I took it with me to the farm over Christmas and even though I was reading more than I normally would, it lasted a full week before it needed charging. I'm finding that I don't really get eye strain from it and I love the shape and the way the buttons work. The only negative is that its quite weighty. I really hope these guys bring out a new device as I am really impressed with the quality of the device. I until then, I am enjoying reading ebooks again for the first time in a long time and much more than I did on my palm.
:book2:
DaleDe 12-31-2007, 10:34 AM so does it mean that when I have the coby ca-44 adapter (http://www.millionbuy.com/cbycav1.html), I can just plug it in my ebookwise and I do not need to use the original charger they supply?
That is correct. However, I have found the original puts out slightly more than 12V even though that is the spec and tends to charge the device a little faster.
