gardenstate 11-20-2007, 09:33 AM just saw this on eBay....cost $24.95 plus shipping

Appears to be a metal box like a DVD case with a neoprene lining.... I guess it is for those wanting a ready-made hard case for their Sony reader....
see this thread also for making your own case...

RWood 11-20-2007, 10:54 AM I have a "soft" case of neoprene and rip stop nylon with a plastic insert in the flap over the screen. Great protection. This should work well too. It looks like an old DVD case (the kind Disney used) with an insert.
Greg G 11-22-2007, 01:03 PM The ebay one looks to be excatcly what I've been looking for to protect my 505 reader when carrying it around in my brief case (broke my 500 that way). I ordered it and will let you know what I think when I get it.

shondark 11-22-2007, 05:27 PM Thx. i'm really interested too in a case like this. I've found a shop that sells only the case, for the US and Canada
http://www.effectuality.com/store/item.php/name/DVD_Tin/product/view/itemid/88/catid/5/store/us/lng/en
And this other shop is in the UK and is useful for the people in the UK, they send to other countries but the shipping is really expensive for several countries, including Spain.

Anyone knows where I can buy neoprene or something to soft the case?
kjn24 11-22-2007, 06:10 PM I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about, but this site:
http://www.seattlefabrics.com/neoprene.html
seems to have a large selection of neoprene. I believe the person on ebay was selling them for $24.95. Sounds like a great profit to me! Ebay also has a fabric cover:
http://tinyurl.com/2puqms
but that seems more decreative then protective.

Greg G 11-22-2007, 08:35 PM The cost of the tin may be $1.25 but shipping is $14 to me so that would be $15.25. If you buy 10 then you shipping only goes up $1 so buying a bunch and making them for selling on ebay is a great idea. I'm willing to pay the extra $9.75 to not have to mess with making it. Hopefully it will do the job for me.

coopervanning 11-24-2007, 06:24 PM Back up on ebay so I snagged one.

I bought a similar product (DVD tin case metal) and I am not sure whether it is recommendable for Sony reader.
First, PRS 505 will not fit in with its cover on. PRS 505 may fit in without the cover, but I did not try this since I would like to use the cover.
Second, the tin case is not as sturdy as I would have hoped. I can feel the case bends at the pressure of my fingertips. It looks pretty good in picture but I don't think it will offer strong enough protection to carry it in a bag with lots of other stuffs.

So did I. Hopefully it'll suit me until I find something better.
coopervanning 12-01-2007, 06:24 PM Got mine today and it is what I was looking for. A little on the light side but perfect for protecting my reader when I throw it in my bag:D:D
Ozric 12-01-2007, 08:50 PM Mine hasn't arrived yet. Will the Reader fit inside with the cover on?
coopervanning 12-02-2007, 10:33 AM My 500 did fit inside with the cover on
Ozric 12-02-2007, 11:45 AM Then I suspect my 505 will fit inside as well. Thanks!
Ozric 12-03-2007, 03:38 PM Mine arrived today, though I'm at work and won't get to actually insert my Reader inside it until I get home. The construction is a little flimsier than I was hoping, even though I knew it wasn't actually titanium. But really it just needs to give the Reader some protection inside my carry-on bag when I travel later this month, and I'm sure it will be adequate for that.
Greg G 12-04-2007, 08:46 AM I got mine the other day. It does what I wanted and fits the 505 with cover on. The key for me is that it is still small (smaller than the Kindle :) ) but much better protected. The person did a good job putting it together. It is not something that you can stand on or anything but for $25 it does a nice job of protecting our $300 toy.

Ozric 12-04-2007, 10:42 AM Yeah, I think it'll work fine. It just needs to give my Reader some protection. I don't need it to stop a bullet or anything.
gwynevans 12-04-2007, 05:06 PM Hmm, I'm wondering about this... Anyone in the UK fancy coming in on a joint order & splitting the shipping costs?
stustaff 12-08-2007, 03:57 PM Yeh i might be how much would it work out at do you think?

Well, I figure the following costs for each (using a US$2=£1 conversion), with the 1st col the number of people, then the 2nd col if the UK onward postage is 1st class recorded & the 3rd col if the UK onward postage is UK Special Delivery.
i.e. Just two people, using SD drops the shared price to £23.63 each (1st would be cheaper, but a longer wait/more hassle if one goes astray)
N 1st Cls SpDel
- ------ ------
1 £27.50 £27.50
2 £22.52 £23.63
3 £20.86 £22.33
4 £20.03 £21.69
kjn24 12-28-2007, 05:21 AM My 500 did fit inside with the cover on
Did the 500 fit in the case with the leather cover on, or the cover that came with the reader?
Thanks!
Kathy
Ozric 01-01-2008, 09:10 PM The 505 fits snugly in the case that comes with the Reader. It used it when I went out of town for the holidays. It's a soft metal that yields when pressure is applied, but I found it provided sufficient protection during travel in a carry-on bag.

I just picked up one from Amazon
jakeluck 02-01-2008, 12:40 AM is it real titanium(what grade) or just a hardened tin case?
kjn24 02-01-2008, 05:36 AM According to the seller on ebay - who I think is the same seller on amazon - they are not titanium. I've heard them described as 'pretty sturdy', but you still probably wouldn't want to toss it around or anything.

I received one of the cases from Ebay yesterday. It's definitely just a tin case with neoprene inside, but the construction is fine, and the fit is absolutely perfect for the 505 with the stock cover.
That being said, I would put a rubber band around it to ensure it really stays closed while it's packed in my luggage.
revmike 02-20-2008, 03:22 PM I just received mine from the person at amazon. It does what I want it to do and that is to give some added protection when I travel.
Pendergast 05-27-2008, 09:59 AM Hello, I reduced the possibilities to two cases and I would appreciate some advice.
This is the expensive one, from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/eCaddy-Hardshell-Case-eReader-PRS-505/dp/B0010W3JQO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1201732254&sr=8-1
and this the other one

Has anyone bought one of them? Which one fits better?
Thanks
JanetCinNC 05-29-2008, 09:01 PM My husband has the one from amazon. It has neoprene cushioning inside, and it cradles the reader in its original cover perfectly - it doesn't move at all in there. He throws the case in his overloaded briefcase and it has protected his reader for a couple of months or so.
It looks to me like the cheaper one has one of those spindles that you put a cd or dvd on in a jewelbox-type case. I think you might have to pull that out to fit the reader in, and then there would be no cushioning in there unless you put something in yourself.
Edit: He's actually had it since mid-January. He says he loves it.
Pendergast 05-29-2008, 11:43 PM Thank you JanetCinNC, that was what I needed to make a decision. If the 505 fits with its original cover I don't have to look for more cases.
The cheaper one, sent to Spain, where I live, is probably more expensive than the other one so, I'm gonna start thinking what else I'm asking to Amazon because I don't like to make an order with shipping costs with only one item.
Thanks again
Greetings
Pendergast

Nice case. Perfect for travel. I have a lot decent cases recently and this looks pretty nice.

A bento belt would work just as well and be nicer looking, to downright cute if you want to go there. You can get them in Asian specialty stores or online - ichiban kan now ships to the US (and has shipped internationally for a while) and their belts are $1 before shipping: http://www.ichibankanusa.com/s.nl?sc=13&category=&search=belt
(Note: the first one is from the above store, the other one is from a blog and the woman bought it locally, so I can't help you there, but search around for bento belt or band and you'll find some).
jridley 06-03-2008, 11:19 AM I got one from Amazon. It's adequate for what I need - I throw it in a bike bag and cram in my lunch, camera, phone, maybe some clothes and sometimes other stuff, then ride 11 miles to work and 11 back, every day. It's enough protection. To get an idea of what it is, think oversized Altoids tin with some thin padding. I probably could have found something cheaper but my time is worth something.
seajewel 06-25-2008, 05:07 PM I just ordered the one from Amazon. Carrying around the Sony has been really nerve-wracking for me, because of all the stories about how fragile the screens are. Not to mention how easily chipped the metal can be, at least on the blue 505's. (I have a silver, although now I wish I had a blue. Oh well!)
I like the stock cover, I just wish the one paired with the silver wasn't such a yucky brown. A deep mahogany/burgundy brown would have been fine. But this really does remind me of cheap vinyl couches. If only it was dark blue like the one paired with the blue (I've never actually seen it, but I've heard it's dark blue). Whoever chose the brown really has a difference aesthetic sense from my own.
seajewel 06-30-2008, 05:47 PM Just wanted to report back that I got the case from Amazon and like it a lot. It is pretty much what I needed. Certainly not fancy but will put my mind at ease while carrying the Reader around.
curtw 07-01-2008, 10:11 AM I just ordered the one from Amazon. Carrying around the Sony has been really nerve-wracking for me, because of all the stories about how fragile the screens are.
You know, something tells me that in those stories, the people are grossly underestimating the abuse that they've subjected their hardware to.
Last month, I was on a plane flight when my seatmate asked about the Reader. I was showing off all the features, and as I was waving my arms to show how convenient it is, the Reader popped out of its plastic clips, flew up to head-height, and pinwheeled up the aisle. It bounced on at least three corners and came to rest face-down. The top insert came a little loose, so the power switch didn't operate until I pushed it back down, but otherwise the reader was perfect.
I suspect that a lot more of these incidents are a result of point-force application perpendicular to the screen
