From Amazon's Kindle page:

Note: This item is not immediately available to ship. (In stock on November 21, 2007. Order it now.)

I wonder how large their initial inventory was.

Yeah, I just ordered and it said "in stock" then the email said "Nov 28th" Damn.

OTOH, they rolled back the next day shipping I selected to free 2-day so I saved $18. And if everyone here that is getting one tomorrow says it sucks, I can cancel. <g>

Then if it is super great I will get another for Barb for XMas. No need to worry about WAF - she is getting a new kitchen in Feb. That makes this look like pocket change. <g>

Ordered mine this morning. Just got email at 1:15 that the order shipped fedex. So will get my kindle tomorrow! Already have several blog, magazine and newspaper subscriptions signed up.

I only have one real regret for the kindle. That it doesn't have a black version. It will be impossible for me to hide this "upgrade" from my wife as I so easily did when upgrading my PRS-500 -> 505. I'm really not sure how i'm going to justify this impulse buy to her. Heh, oh well, just means she will get a free shopping spree on black friday.

What time did you order? Mine went through at 6:30am east coast time and I still don't have a shipping notice.

Thank you. This raises the question of WTH did they do to screw up my order?

Did you check your spam filter? :D

Did you check your spam filter. :D

Yes. Repeatedly. That is irrelevant, though. The order page on Amazon does not have a tracking number; it says they are still packing the Kindle. And that's as of about 2 minutes ago.

I ordered mine at 11:00 am, Mountain time, and my status says:
Items shipping soon: Shipping estimate: November 19, 2007

But I haven't received a shipping notice yet. Which sucks. I hope that doesn't mean they were already sold out...

Thanks. It makes me feel a little better to know I am not alone in this problem.

I hope that unlike Sony, Amazon will release their sales numbers. We need those numbers to prove that e-book isn't strictly niche anymore...

I just received my shipping notice. They just shipped and it's due here on 11-20-2007. Whew!

I'm usually not this much of an early adopter, but hey it's my holiday bonus, might as well spend some of it on something to do with reading rather than scootering--the rest of the bonus went into boring ol' savings.. :smash:

You know, you kids have it easy ... you just click a button and there's your stuff ... I remember the old days, when we first had to bully the manufacturer of an e-reader into selling it to us ... and even then it would take forever until you got it ... and tracking it was a nightmare ... and don't even talk to me about the price ... what is the world coming to ... grumble mumble ...

LOL, I remember the old days when an ereader meant microfiche and begging the librarian to order a book that you were lucky to see in a year or two.

Finally the tracking updated. It's out for delivery today. I am currently waiting for a callback from the distribution center with a time estimate.

Great, Nate! If I hadn't been half asleep early yesterday morning I would've gone for the overnight shipping. Mine'll be here tomorrow.

I would love to know what the sales numbers on these things are - the current date for delivery is 11/29, and they're listed as 'sold out'.

Yeah - I think 11/29 is the estimated ship date.

Alisa

Yep. They're still estimating on the purchase page that it'll ship 11/29. But 11/29 + 2 day shipping != 12/4. It's 4 business days. I'm just warning folks in case they thought they might actually get it in their hands by the 30th. I was going to upgrade to overnight since I'm a Prime member and I have a story-reading party that weekend but it looks like it won't matter.

It's always been my experience with Amazon that they add a few business days to estimated delivery dates. I almost always receive things from them in advance of the date they quote.

I hope you're right. Gives me an excuse to shop for ebooks! I like to bring various selections of short reading for people to these parties. By the way, I love your avatar. Looks a lot like the little girl who is sprawled across my lap right now.

That's been my experience using any free shipping they might offer. Since I've been using Prime (2 years) their dates have generally been spot on.

Yeah I wonder how many they sold in each set, it was weird I saw it change from Dec 3rd to the 5th which is only 2 days difference... so lets say they had 1,000 units each time they have changed the date i think nearly 4 times that would make 4,000 units.. or if it was 10,000 that could be like 40,000 units.. just speculating obviously though.

I want to see how Kindle sales pan out with respect to resellers. Considering that the past year has seen a surge in craigslist/ebay scalping (e.g. wii, ps3, iphone), I wouldn't be surprised if publicity surrounding the 5-6 hour sellout didn't catch the eyes of certain enterprising individuals. In their eyes, the Kindle might seem like the perfect item, having a single distributor, massive publicity, a high price as far as gadgets go, low shipping costs, and a holiday season introduction. I guess we'll find out within the week once the next couple of shipments go out.
