getting started with Kobo

My children have given me a Kobo for Christmas and I registered on line immediately and received confirmation of that fact. However I am now in an area where I do not have access to WIFI and it seems that there are absolutely no books loaded on to the Kobo without accessing the internet. Can anyone help?

Can you access the Kobo bookstore through your PC? You can purchase books through the Kobo desktop software, and I *think* you can hook up your Kobo and sync it though the computer, but I haven't tried that myself, so I'm not 100% sure that will work.

Most books at the Kobo site give you the option of downloading an Adobe DRM version of the book. You'd need to download Adobe Digital Editions, register for an account. Then when you plug in your Kobo with that software running, you can register the device. You'll then be able to load the Adobe version of the books you purchase onto your Kobo using the micro USB cable.

Note, that using this method you won't be able to sync bookmarks across different devices, but if you'll only be reading on your Kobo that won't matter.

ETA: Using Adobe Digital Editions, you can also load books your purchase at Sony onto your Kobo, and from many other sites that use ADE DRM.

I'm guessing you want to get books from Kobo? Download the Kobo desktop app, and buy/download the books you want, then plug your Kobo in and do a sync through the USB cable.

Thank you for your comments. I was trying to get through a library but even when I do as you suggest and I sync the books (that I can now see in my library), they still only show a preview and not the whole book - these are free e-books

That seems odd, do you mind if I ask what book it was? Books that are purchasable have previews that you can download for free but public domain books only have add to Library for me.

I just downloaded a couple of books that said they were free but when I went to read them, I saw Pg 1 of 1 or Pg 1 of 3 and didn't realise that that is just there to confuse. In fact you plow through that and keep turning pages and, surprise, surprise, the book appears to be there. Thanks for your help. Sue

Sue; if the display shows "Pg 1 of 3" or similar, it means the book your downloaded is in what we call Kobo ePub format or k-ePub. All this means is you are reading page 1 of 3 in a given chapter.

On the Kobo web site if you go to the "My Library" section you should see all the books you have obtained. Next to many of the books will be a blue button labeld "ADOBE EPUB DRM" (or something similar). Clicking that will either download an ePub directly (if the book has NO DRM on it), or, download an ACSM file that when you open in Adobe Digital Editions (or ADE) will download an ePub with DRM.

If you transfer these ePubs to your Kobo using ADE, when you read the book the display will show "Pg 1 of 600"; ie the page you are within the WHOLE book.
