View Full Version : Any non-leather covers?
Sparrow 11-11-2007, 01:37 PM I'm tempted by what I've read about the Gen3, but I'd prefer not to have a reader with a leather cover :disappoin.
As a cover is really a necessity for any reading device; does anyone know if there are any non-leather options for the Gen 3?
Many thanks.

Go here (http://www.buymedge.com/) For the Gen3 they say "coming soon"
nekokami 11-11-2007, 08:33 PM Many people have been able to find less expensive (and leather-free) options for reader covers for different devices. I got an inexpensive day planner and removed the notebook part, and my iLiad fits inside nearly perfectly. This is easier to do after you have the device, because you can take it to the store and try it out, but you could make a mock-up of cardboard based on the published dimensions. At least the Bookeen devices are square. ;)
tobyb 11-13-2007, 05:44 PM The leather cover really does make the Cybook lovely to hold (sorry that's the best adjective I could think of!).
It has great built quality, and good padding on both sides (thicker on the front to protect screen I guess).
However, it's a bit difficult to just hold with one hand and also page turn with the same hand. This is because I find the front cover bends back when held with the right hand (whilst still having fingers over directional buttons to page turn). If you hold with the left hand, you can comfortably hold the device and manage the cover, but your left hand can't reach the buttons to page turn!!
Solution? Cybook needs to have buttons on the left hand side also! Or the cover on the other side...
Sparrow 11-16-2007, 01:32 PM Thanks for the replies.
My resistance finally crumbled and I've ordered a Cybook :2thumbsup
Hopefully I'll be able to find a suitable cover for it once its arrived.
nekokami 11-17-2007, 05:57 PM A Sony cover might fit -- how close in size are the two units? (I'm too lazy to check.)

IMO, Bookeen should consider offering a simple, non-leather, non expensive transport sleeve for the reader and include it in the basic Cybook Gen3 pack... ;)
A protection of some kind is really necessary, but having to pay 40 € for it effectively raises the price of the Cybook by roughly 10%.
novainvictus 11-22-2007, 04:35 PM The m-edge cover for the cybook is now available.
Link: here (http://www.buymedge.com/p_cybook_gleather.HTML)
but its very expensive...
My plan is to be a bit creative; I'll retrofit some old (hardcover) book to serve as protection.

Paulius 12-08-2007, 04:44 PM Bah, I ordered mine with the leather cover. It's a nice cover, and spending $40 for a cover for a $350 device isn't too far-fetched in my book.
Remember. Leather is the only material which gets nicer with time.

 I'm a veggie; don't want to see some poor creature's skin covering my eReader!
Not conducive to a relaxed reading experience :(

Well, that's certainly one way to look at it.
In my mind, leather doesn't show me a clear connection to a poor animal. But I guess that that's the reason for which I'm not a vegetarian.

So does hemp cloth, actually. (And some might say wood, though it might not be as appropriate for this use.)
I'm a vegetarian as well and I don't buy leather products for that reason. I don't expect others to be vegetarians or to avoid leather, but it's nice to have choices.
Barcey 12-09-2007, 05:32 PM I really like the leather cover for the Cybook. It protects it well, is discreet and even gives that hug a book feel. I was reading in a coffee shop and one of the workers walked by me about 5 times and on the 6th time stopped and said "OMG what is that is that? Is that ever cool, I thought you were just reading a journal."
I hadn't thought about the vegetarian angle though so it's good that you speak up and let the manufacturers know because they probably don't think about it either. If someone came out with a hemp cloth cover for it I'd probably buy it as a second cover. If I'm covered in suntan lotion I probably wouldn't want to be holding the leather cover. Of course I'd want mine laden with THC so that it would dull my pain if the device ever goes up in flames.:)
tofuninjah 12-09-2007, 10:54 PM ohh, a hemp cover would be nice. I almost didn't buy it because of the leather cover, but I thought there should be more options available later. I hope they come out with an alternative cover too. :2thumbsup

I'm going on a big trip to. What I did was making a temporary cover from a CD box. I took the version that could hold 3/4 DVD's and removed the middle part.
The Cybook fits exactely in one of the flaps. The two big 'rings' that hold the DVD's do not touch the screen. I tried several versions. In one of them I had to cut out a small hole for the power button. This was because the button touched the cover.
ggendel 12-13-2007, 06:57 AM A questions for those that have the cover.
Is it possible to put on the cover flipped so it opens on the left? This way the buttons on the left side are accessible. Would there be other problems with this arrangement?

Certainly not the tan cover. It only fits on one way.
kkingdon 12-13-2007, 02:46 PM The black cover also only fits one way.
philodox 12-25-2007, 10:25 PM I have no problem with using leather, but I do have a problem with paying $30 for getting something that costs $40 to my door. I really wish my wife had bought a case with it when she ordered... Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what M-edge and other similar companies come up with. Thanks for that link btw, lindemaximilian. :)
ProfJulie 02-01-2008, 12:45 PM The cover I designed has a padded flap that covers the screen when I am not using it. The Cybook fits inside a holder and the holder is velcroed into place. The inside of the flap has a few small pockets.
I'm thinking about adding a tie to it to hold it closed when I'm not reading.
It hardly cost me anything...I already had the materials, but I figure it probably cost less than $5 to make.
I've attached some pictures.
I just got the Cybook Gen3 earlier this week, but did not get a cover with it. I was able to create my own cover out of an old gutted Moleskine (http://www.moleskines.com/klmbl14.html) notebook and some velcro tape. The only other thing I needed was a swiss army knife to remove the insides of the notebook. The final result is a pretty good looking cover that is non-leather (the cover material is oilcloth covered cardboard). I may still add a small amount of padding on left hand flap, but I need to find the right material first.
