Makes me really curious about the future of Avantgo

Sybase is smart: In the next two years they'll go after the wireless market hard and make a fortune with the Avantgo and the iAnywhere brands. There's no market competition. ;)

Or is there? :(

I know of none to speak of. There is Mazingo, but they don't seem to have nearly the installed user base that AvantGo currently boasts.
As always, I have to be worried that the product might be different after the acquisition as compared to before (Read: Not as good). However, I haven't started using AvantGo again yet, so I don't have anything to lose at the moment.

An interesting fact: According to management, MyAvantGo moves two terabytes of data a day. If you assume an average download size of 100kb for one channel, then this would mean 20,000,000 channel downloads a day. Or 833,333 downloads the hour. Or 13,888 downloads the minute. How small do I feel now. What might be of interest to you is that, according to Sybase, MyAvantGo will continue as a free customer service. Feel free to post what you think about this deal in the forum.

And 7 million customers. Just imagine the potential for iSilo, Plucker and the rest, if for some reason Sybase would alienate the 7 million Avantgo users in the future.

Good times ahead of us :D

Indeed, that is a lot of data.
As for alienating the 7 million people, AvantGo will probably reign supreme for a long time to come. They have the easy way. In order to run iSilo, one must get the address of a mobile site, which we all know is not always made obvious, or even publicly available. Given that, in order to get an address that is not given out freely, one sometimes has to do some creative wandering around a search engine, or find a site like this :p Further, one has to set up the channel, deciding the proper link depth and choosing all the other settings. All of this activity requires time and some knowledge. Those are two things that most users are not willing to offer. People at large, the non-nerds among us, often want the easy way, just click the add button and make the content appear. No typing, no setup, no time required. AvantGo offers exactly that kind of convenience.

Scott, that is the question. Will Sybase keep its current Avantgo customer base or will it try to move to a more "professional" customer segment, i.e. enterprise customers? Currently, iAnywhere mobile database and synchronization technologies is mainly used by enterprises. And they have the money to pay for it. Avantgo never made much money with its service. So I wonder if Avantgo will remain open to us or not...... and if not, guess who will offer a great alternative
