Unable to pass validate ePub

Hello and thank you in advance for any assistance. I write with "Pages" and export as "Word". I have passed with last book but this one states:

ERROR: aunt-barbaras-powerful-little-book-of-comfort-4.epub/tmp_ab3c95991514ac8da6e536aea5fcbf93_a8x8N4.ch.fix ed.fc.tidied.stylehacked.xfixed_split_002.html(246 ): attribute "start" not allowed here; expected attribute "class", "dir", "id", "style", "title" or "xml:lang"
Check finished with warnings or errors!

Would anyone be able to translate the error?

You have a numbered list. Don't use lists, just write the numbers as normal text.

Can Pages output HTML? Word is not good to get involved in making ePub if ible.

I'd be a little surprised if a .doc file output by Pages looked exactly like the .doc file output by Word. The Smashwords meatgrinder is said to be fussy.

JD Sawyer has an OpenOffice template that lets him output a Smashwords compliant file, so OpenOffice might be a better choice for Mac users than Pages. I can't find just now, so I'll keep looking later tonight.

Of course, always listen to Jelby, too.
