An attention grabber was an e-paper watch reportedly developed by the joint Hong Kong-US company Art Tech. Expected to be on sale in December of this year, the e-paper in this latest Christmas gizmo makes it possible to select the face you want the watch to display.

Looks better than the previous E Ink watches they showed us. Personally I wouldn't mind this new watch -- but why did they make those E I N K letters so large???? :smash:

What I can't figure out is why it has actual, physical hands. :headscratch:

I'm very interested in these, but I won't pay hundreds of dollars for a watch. :unafraid: If they get it under $100 they've probably got a sale here. :nice:

Isn't this (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15469&highlight=watch) the same one?

No refresh rate that's why the hands.

This could be the perfect customisable watch. Plug it to the computer with a camera USB wire and put a picture on the face, now why didn't they think of that? The "E-INK" logo could be bypassed this way too. Hey they could even have a scrollable ebook while we're there.

Is this an e ink watch or a cheesy add for e ink?

Oooops! I was wrong about the 'no refresh rate'. If you go to the other link (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15469&highlight=watch), there are two pictures of the watch. One of them sports a digital time display just under the hands spindle.

If you could upload your own faces (e.g. put the numerals in Chinese or cuneiform or whatever) I guess I might be interested, though not at this price. I've been wearing the same $10 watch for the past 15 years. I did just spend about $100 on a fancy watch for my husband as an anniversary gift that does temperature, tides, and compass as well as time. But this watch couldn't do any of that, for a whole lot more money, and I bet you can't upload a pic of your kids, either.

neko, maybe we could start a business of downloaded watch faces with alarm ring tones

I think it's the same. I think the leather wristband makes a big difference to the earlier E Ink watches... the whole watch looks less geeky and more usable now ;)

... though not at this price.I missed the price, where did you see it? Or just what was the price? http://www.mobileread.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif

I was basing my statement on your comment that you wouldn't pay hundreds of dollars for one....

I'll buy an e-ink watch that looks as cool as this, but costs under $50:

Not sure... I believe it's a design prototype, and I don't know if a physical model has even been fabbed.

Actually, according to the design notes (which I can't seem to find now), the "flowing sands" animation was a sort of screen saver, flowing top to bottom every 60 seconds. You'd touch the face to see a digital time readout appear.

But who cares?!? Look at it!!!

Better to look at is this one for the Ladies from Seiko. It features mystery mode where the full 360 display is animated.

To be honest, if this watch was given to me, I would wear it although I am a man.

I'd like to see something that looked like the Seiko one, but sized to be worn as a ring.

Hmmm, you'd need pretty good eyesight just to tell time. In the dark? Forget it.

Rats, I thought it WAS a ring! I was all set to save my pennies!

Ok, not really, but I still think that's darn cool!

I remember seeing this one in a thread a few months back, but it's crazy expensive. I would totally pick one up to and put some type of tribal pattern design on it instead of the foofy floral pattern. Still got my eyes pealed for it.

Oh, well, if you can't hack it to change the display, then forget it. ;)

I think the physical hands make it possible to read in the dark. The e-ink face is just that, the face. If you were really clever you could make just the minimal electronics to erase the display and address each pixel. Probably something like a four wire data interface. Then a dongle for your PC that has the smarts in it and can write the face of your choice on it.

As for $15 vs $100 vs $1000+ watches its sort of a fashion statement for guys. Basically a Tag-Heur watch on your wrist says you can afford to spend too much money on a watch. Even if you're a geek and otherwise un-remarkable many attractive women will pick up on that. Sad but true.

http://www.yankodesign.com/images/design_news/2007/11/13/digitus.jpg
As electronic technology advances to the sub-micron level, it’s hard to imagine what kinds of things will exist in the future. Designer Charles Windlin believes we’ll see inanimate objects like rings take on highly compact and intelligent devices. The Digitus Ring concept holds 1,400 magnetic spheres each able to rotate in place. Micro computer circuitry controls which spheres turn to show their darker colored sides. A ring can suddenly tell time and possibly when your wedding anniversary is all without the use of power hungry LCD screens.
Wow, that gal has a crooked finger.

This one is a bit too large, but I think it could be half the width and still show the time plenty well.
