Want under $100, maybe the Kindle ?

My EBW-1150 seems to be a complete dead end. The Kindle now goes for $79.00 USD, but I have some concerns:

Limited file formats, but it does appear that Calibre can help me.

How to transfer the files to the Kindle ? Need to do this via USB, ideally a simple file copy, with the Kindle seen as another drive. Have no interest in the wi-fi feature, just an additional expense to buy the access point, which is otherwise useless to me.

Is the Kindle a good bet, or is there something better ?

At $100.00 or more, used paperbacks are a better deal. My use is casual reading during my commute back and forth from work.

If it matters, I use both Windows 7 and the latest Mageia Linux, (Mandriva fork) on my PC's. In a pinch, I could add Windows XP, or another Linux distro.

TIA

There is not a lot of choice under $100. The kindle should be a solid option, though the lack of keyboard and touch screen would make text input a pain, but maybe not an issue for you. Another option you can consider is a refurbished nook touch for $79.

jb, those of us who have the jetBook and the jetBook Lite like them very much.

They have the reflective TFT screen (like your wristwatch) with very black text.

They handle all the major formats (including Amazon's mobi), and the ePub DRM.

The jetBook is currently on sale for $49.99 with free shipping till the end of the month at Newegg. Here is the link to the thread with the discount code and the link to Newegg: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=154719

The Kindle is a good choice. You can sideload ebooks onto the Kindle via USB, or if you use Calibre for file conversion you can also use it to manage your Kindle content. It will copy the files to the Kindle (via USB) for you.

You can get the nook Simple Touch for $79 currently from B&N/eBay. If you're inclined to root it, it can do great things!

You move them to the \documents folder on the Kindle. The Kindle mounts as a standard Mass Storage device. This can be done via a simple file copy over USB or you can use calibre's Send to Device function to do the USB file copy.

If you purchase ebooks from Amazon they need to be downloaded from Amazon's server. This can be done via a browser on your desktop computer for copying via USB if you aren't connected to a WiFi access point to allow direct download to the device.

And only a 5" screen. That extra 1" makes a big difference.

I recently bought a Sony PRS-350 for $60 (it was a demo model).

The Pearl Eink screen is a big improvement over my PRS-300.

Kindles are fine but I like the Sony line better. The Pearl Eink screen is definitely worth the bucks.

I am pretty sure you would be happy with most available Pearl ereaders and if you can't find a better deal go for the Kindle. As CPL Punishment said you can always return it.

At $79 the Kindle is a good deal. Yes, you can use USB to load your books if you don't want to add a WiFi access point to your house. (BTW, once you do add a WiFi hotspot, you may find other uses for it. Originally added for my laptop, it's since been used by the kids' PS-3, their and their friends' iPods, my iPhone, a Kindle, a iPad, and probably other devices I'm not remembering now.)

Even if you don't use the WiFi, the base Kindle is a good deal. It has the same great screen as the other 6-inch models, and the screen is what you use all the time while reading. (Keyboards and touch screens are relatively less important to the core reading experience.)

Right now the Kindle 4 @ $79 is the best value. You can side load books via USB. Mobi files work fine on it and you can convert most of the others with calibre.

It's pretty simple you use as well.
