View Full Version : Minimo Installer for the iLiad (beta)

I'm releasing a beta of Mozilla Minimo for the iLiad.

This hasn't been thoroughly tested, so your mileage may very. It's a standard installer, but it will remove the existing Minimo on your iLiad. It's possible that it may break the stock html viewer. This is only available for 2.11, so you can reflash if you have any problems.

I'm attaching some screenshots.

To exit the program, open a new tab, or change settings, you will need to choose from the menu on the upper left (there's not an icon for the menu, just blank space). See the screenshots for an example.

Please give me lots of feedback. The refreshed can be changed by editing the iliad_refresh.conf in the Minimo folder of your programs directory. You can find any error output in output.txt

Edit: Attachment Updated. Should fix some refresh issues. Added connection manager scripts from Dillo.

Those who previously installed should be able to run new installer without issues.

Hi,
I wrote this via Iliad/minimo/usb-keyboard/wifi after a view crashes but the feelng is great
It seem crashes came from german-usb-keyboard and differences with the keyboard driver, as long as i do not use the backspace from the numberblock anything works stable..
Installer works nice and soo easy..

Hello,

I am having some trouble -- the menu does not work at all, refreshing does not seem to happen, and the back and forward arrow keys on the (on screen) keyboard when entering a url crash minimo.

My /usr/local/lib/libX11.so.6 is 937538 Jun 06 -- Could it be the wrong one?

Ok so I've got my new Iliad sitting on the desk next to me. I've got an unpacked Zip file on my desktop and no idea how to install it on the Iliad. Do I need other software as well? Thanks in advance (I'm off to change my answer to the iLiad Owners: How technologically oriented are you? thread)

Hi,
@awi - Yes you have to use a connection manager like connectionMgr_script or wireless-101107-PL from this forum and start the network manual before starting minimo.

@Boris - (copied fom HarryT from this forum, hope itīs ok :o)
You need to request and download the shell access package from iRex first, than
1. Download the zip file of the installation package.
2. Unzip it on your PC or Mac.
3. Copy the installer folder to the root of a CF or SD card.
4. Put the card in your iLiad.
5. Navigate to it with the "Contents Lister".
6. Tap the "Install <whatever>" item that shows up in the Contents Lister.

That's all there is to it. Once you've installed it, the contents lister will show the new place where to start minimo, donīt forget to start network before.. :)

It seems, that i cant quit the minomo on my iLiad. At least it seems to leave its image permanently in the image buffer. I cant get anything else on my screen, but the minimo.

I think I understand why I am having so much trouble.

In error.txt it says

iliad_refresh.conf: unrecognized refresh type: typing 400

In iliad_refresh.conf it says

typing 400

What is it supposed to say in iliad_refresh.conf?

mrxvt has: Typing 100 so try changing t to T.

Is minimo itself still responding? If not, this is the usual way for the iLiad to hang (i.e. with a frozen screen image) - all you need do is press the reset button on the back and then turn the machine back on.

It is the same hacked libX11 in the installer. I just stripped the debug information to keep the file smaller.

;) Thanks for the tip wallcraft. I am very well aware of that. What i find irritating is, that the iLiad does not seem to hang. When i exit the application, i can see the pagebar changing, and i seem to be able to change pages and everything seems to work underneath. Just the framebuffer does not seem to get updated with new information, but leaves me with the nice but not that nice image of the minimo.

Hmm,
Connection Manager doesnīt work (also my previous one from dillo doesnīt) only the wireless-101107-PL does his job now..

Minimo seems to refresh faster/better viewable :)

This may sound like a stupid question, but are you sure you're choosing "Quit" from the menu on the upper left (there's not an icon for the menu, just blank space).

I haven't see anything like this in my testing. Is minimo still running? What happens when you use the pagebar?

Looks good Adam.
I installed it to my iLiad's internal memory instead of my CF card by mistake. Is there an uninstall procedure, or can I just delete the Programs folder? (There's nothing else in there.)
By the way, I've found using a connection script which bypasses the iLiad connectionManager to be *much* quicker and more reliable for connecting the net.

This installer shouldn't have a problem on the internal memory. There is no uninstaller, as it would remove all of the html viewer files.

If you want to reinstall to the memory card, delete the _local and Programs folder on your internal memory, and run the installer again on your card.

Installed it and it looks fabulous. 2 things on usability though, noted from my working experience with Dillo. a) Is it possible to bind iLiad's NextPg/PrevPg (that vertical silver bar on iLiad's left side - dunno the official page) to PgUp/PgDown in minimo? b) in Dillo it's possible to move a page simply by dragging the pen on iLiad's screen.
Is there an easy way to implement these 2 features which imo are a life/time savier and so much usable?
thx again

Adam B.
10-28-2007, 08:16 AM
Using the page bar may be possible in the future, I'll have to test some things and update the installer. I don't believe that dragging the pen will be possible though. I'm just working off of iRex's build of minimo. So I can't modify the internal code.

Really nice work, I enjoy being able to check my email from my iLiad! I have a couple of questions/bugs, though... Is there a way to make the UI bigger? The scrollbar and menus are so small, it's difficult to tap on them accurately. I know there's a menu-based "zoom" function, but while the text zoom works, the UI zoom doesn't do anything. Currently, Minimo likes to draw pages with width wider than the screen, which means I have to pan left/right a lot. Any way to make it draw pages by default to the width of the screen? I know not every page can be resized, but it doesn't seem to do any resizing...Anyway, I really appreciate this one!

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason we can't just use the Minimo source to port the "real" Minimo to the iLiad? Then we could edit the code however we want...

Adam B.
10-28-2007, 10:22 AM
The UI is controlled by the files in the chrome directory. You could probably edit those to make everything larger.

I don't think this build of minimo has this ability. Probably one of the newer builds do.

I've tried building minimo in the past from Mozilla source, but it segfaulted on me every time I tried to run it. Maybe someone else might have a bit more luck...

I could not get it to work, either. I did manage to change my homepage to google.com (minimo would not take a much longer url), then got google to do igoogle, then make a widget to point to my homepage, which has a link to the google bookmarks url (you could make a widget that went directly). Not a better idea, but a different one, and at least it has the same bookmarks as my desktop.

I don't yet have an Ilaid and know its not meant to make the quick changes necessary to be a real web browser. Wondered though if it could be used to control a Slim Devices SqueezeBox? http://www.slimdevices.com/index.html and http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3

There are programs for tablets and PDAs to control it. Ilaid, to a layman, looks like cross between the two.

It would be very cool to be able to read while listening to music and change CDs or playlists or songs by highlighting an item on a page in the "book" one is reading from.

Adam, Thank your for your work on this.

I tried minimo yesterday. Installing was easy and also the network connection scripts worked beautifully. However, minimo was very slow, albeit not usable. It also crashed several times e.g. by accessing gmail or selecting text in de address bar, but this wasn't reproducible.

Anyway, I look forward to a better browser for the Iliad. It would be great to check my email or google notes while on the way.

Nigel:
I've just ordered one (an iLiad that is)!
The iLiad is a Linux device so if there is a Linux version of the control software you are referring to then it would be possible to port it to the iLiad. However, I imagine the chances of somebody doing the port is fairly low as you need someone who has an iLiad, a SqueezeBox, developer knowledge of both, and the time to do it!

You don't want to run the squeeze-server on the iliad, for several reasons. And if the slimserver runs on your pc/server somewhere, you can just access that servers web interface from your iLiad - should be good enough.

Making a custom UI for iLiad will never be done I believe - I can't see any huge demand for it. Perhaps if a suitable program could be easily ported, but I still doubt it.

Finally my iLiad has arrived and I love it (for the 6 hours I've had it!). Got Minimo installed and can load it up but it says it can't find the webpage. I thought maybe I needed to hit the background connection icon but that doesn't help and it goes off again after a few seconds. Obviously my wireless connection is working as I just connected to iDS to download the shell package. Any ideas?

:oops2:

Working now!

For those others that are as dense as me and couldn't figure this out you need to go to Device Manager on the iLiad -> Main Memory -> Programs -> Configuration Manager and turn on LAN/WLAN.

I'm guessing that if you install Minimo on a memory card that's where Configuration Manager gets installed too?

Jeroen13
11-26-2007, 12:58 PM
Awesome, works great!

A few comments:

While Minimo loads a big JPEG-file (3MB), it quits all of a sudden.
This only appears after a few minutes of browsing so when Minimo has just been launched, the JPEG is shown correctly.

It would be handy if there's a way to scroll via arrow keys, my foldable keyboard doesn't have PgUp/PgDn keys. How about horizontal scrolling? I hope this can also be done via some keys.

Keep up de good work, AdamB!

It seems that the virtual keyboard is matchbox-keyboard, so I guess one can always
launch it in a thread.

In a shell, to see the beast :

Does this mean that it is straight-forward to create shell scripts that take user input via the matchbox-keyboard? If so, anyone got an example to share?

I'm thinking that it should be possible, for example, to create a search script that works across more than just the current directory. And possibly some other ideas.

Hi there,

I'm really sorry to be so thick - I'm a total newbe to this sort of thing as I've no experience of Linux.

I've installed Minimo and deleted the icon - as instructed - which remained in the Device Manager list. However, I can't find any icon in any list which allows me to run your software.

Help!

When I made the installer, SSL seemed to work fine.

When accessing a page like Gmail, it may take a long time to load. Eventually, it'll tell you that the script is not responding and ask if you want to stop it. Make sure you hit continue, it should then finish loading.

Hi Adam, Hi you all,
I want to install minimo but have already upgraded to version 2.12.
The installer of course won't let me do that. :angry:Maybe this is off topic . But you guys can point me to the right direction.
How can I revert / reflash to version 2.11 or should I wait for a new minimo version ?:)

I think all you need to do is change the file Firmware_Script to contain "2.12" rather than "2.11". At least I've just had to try this and it seems to work, though I've not yet checked that the various files don't break anything else. If my Iliad doesn't break over the next few days, and people want, I'll try and provide a zip of the code (though to be honest the edit is easy in notepad or vi on whatever machine you unzip the package one).

csaba911

I understand that. I did that already. But the thing is it's not working with 2.12 I believe. I can't navigate ,enter a url . I even have to take out the CF card to finish the program.
That's why I am asking if anybody was able to get it to work?

LazyScot
02-29-2008, 07:13 AM
It seems to be working for me, though, I've not done a lot of experiments with it. Most of the problems I'm having are down to accessing the wireless network I'm using. I have noticed that it can be very slow -- I think this is something to do with the IP stack and routing. Sometimes things have been improved by replacing the default route (i.e. doing a "route del default gw XXXXX; route add default gw XXXX" where XXX is the appropriate IP address.

However, I'd managed to brick my iLiad just before this (fortunately the CF Flash worked to recover this), so it might be that there is something hanging around for you from before, or that was not installed by the script. You should be able to extract the data from the .ipk (it's an ar file containing some tar.gz, IIRC), and check to see if the stuff to be installed is all there, and the directories created by the preinst script in one of the tars have been created okay. Painful, I know, but it may point at the problem.

You have to unzip the file on your computer than copy it to the iLiad. If you don't have an unzipping program, search for 7zip.

And if I chose Write on disk, nothing appends after :/

Hi Adam,
Great job with the porting :). Just got my iLiad 2 days ago and getting around to trying to install the various applications. I've tried to install minimo port but just got the message, "Firmware 2.11 is needed, you iLiad has got 2.12" . Obviously this is firmware mismatch. Any idea when/if you would have a binary for the 2.12 release. If you need any info etc from me don't hesitate to mail. Hopefully given a bit of time i'll get up to speed with the porting side and start contributing where I can.
