I am not sure if this was posted before, but you can now download the GPL'ed sources of the PRS-505 firmware.
Link: http://www.sony.net/Products/Linux/Download/category3.html#2 (you have to accept the disclaimer to get the right cookies, then click on "Portable Reader System").
Files that seem newer/have been added:
8track20070714.tgz
EBOOK_1_2_0_P4.2_20070426_Linux_src.tgz
USBTG_EBOOK_20070727.tgz
src_libroi2s_070426.tgz
src_libroi2s_060713.tgz

USBTG_EBOOK_20070727 contains the mass storage driver that was added to the 505.

Those are NOT full firmware sources, but only of the kernel and some of the drivers. Propietary Sony drivers, utilities and Fsk shell are not included.
8track is the new display driver provided by E-Ink (old librofb was by Sony).

Seems that now Sony has silently added more firmware sources? Like shell utilities, text utilities, etc? Pity that I knows nothing about Linux:blink:

Thus are all standard linux utilities. Most of them are GNU software.

I like the way you are thinking, how about a reader for mobipocket format books??? Especially now the DRM can be removed from them.
Anyone wish to take up the challenge?

Why do you want a reader for mobipocket when they can be converted easily to LRF? I would actually vote for a better LRF viewer than SONY provides.

Yes, fixing up the lRF viewer would be a great idea.

Erm.... Yeah: guess I was just having an intelligence failure....
Good point, too excited about the prospects and not thinking things through properly....:smack:
