View Full Version : Abiword with Registry Installer

I'm attaching my installer for Abiword. For those who aren't familiar with it. Abiword is a document editor similar to Microsoft Word.

Because of no internal refreshes, and relying completely on the hacked libX11, I'm going to call this a beta release. It's usable, but if you want to edit long documents reliably, this port may not be far enough along.

This includes the registry modifications, so that you can open the following extensions directly from the contentlister.

abw
awt
text
doc
dot
wpd
wp
odt
wri
mif
kwd
dbk
aw

Abiword will edit RTF as well, but because that format is included in the FBReader installer, I've decided not to overwrite that with Abiword.

This is only for software release 2.11. All other versions will need to upgrade first.

If there's an X on the docs, it didn't install correctly.

Did you unzip and run from the iLiad? Does it say that Abiword has been installed?

and run from the iLiad

Do you mean from internal memory? Ive installed it from SD card.

Yes it says it has been installed and that I shall turn off and on my iLiad, what Iv done several times since then... :disappoin

I uninstalled Abiword (with the uninstaller) but still there was the message: Abiword has been installed. Shut down...etc.

I had to copy Abiword fresh to the sd card, then I could install it again. But: Same problem

Hmmm
Thanks for your reply
Olivier

SD Card should work just fine.

Has anyone else had success with it?

Next page? You mean, when you try to use the pagebar in the document?

mac

It installed ok on my CF card, but there are still problems. The flipbar (page-down) does not work, (hangs with blinking computing light). Tapping in the scroll bar (also page down) does not seem to page advance consistently. Under the view tab I was not able to select the zoom arrow. On quit, the save/cancel dialog did not come up until I forced a screen refresh.

By the way, is there a way to force a refresh without bringing up the keyboard? In most apps, clicking in the main windows does this - but not (always) with abiword.

EDIT: I recalled that clicking on the page 1 icon refreshes the screen. Using this often, I was able to select zoom but every page down via clicking in the scrollbar requires a manual screen refresh.

@Adam: Could it be, that when I tried to install previous Abiword, something got wrong?

I just tried to install it by doubleclicking and short a white window appeard (this was Abiword without registry installer).

Should I delete something in _local ?

Thanks for help.

Adam, thanks for everything! I wouldn't buy a iLiad without you!

I just wanted to write and thank Adam and all the others here who have been such great resources on this site. I had problems loading Abiword like those described above. After loading Abiword, it said to restart and after many tries, .doc files still showed Xs. I tried uninstall too but Abiword wouldn't unistall either. Finally, I went through my cf card (where I had installed) deleting all Abiword files (including those in _local) manually. When I reloaded it again, it worked as promised. Hope this bit of knowledge helps others.

The problem occurred to me too while trying to install Abiword. I extracted the ZIP file to /usr/local/Programs/abiword/. This is a problem because the installer tries to install the Abiword shortcut into the same directory. After removing the old installer directory and extracting the ipkg by hand, it finally works.

When you say that you "removed the old installer directory and extracted the ipkg by hand", what does that mean in "step-by-step for dummies" way? :) I have the same problem, but I don't know what to do cause whenever I try deleting something, everything stops working. So I'm guessing I'm not doing it right.

Thanks!

The best is not to extract the ZIP file to a folder "abiword" on your CF card, but to name the folder something like "abiword-installer". This way you shouldn't have a problem with the installer.

I finally got Abiword working. But I dont see all the menues. After the middle of Documents the screen ends. Is this normal?

Sorry my english... look the image, my screen looks like this.

Edit: When I try to open menu edit/properties Abiword crashes.

Maybe I dont see the whole window because the menu is in german... "Datei/Bearbeiten etc." uses more characters. Can I change it to english?
Thanks

Could you provide a new installer for the 2.12 Firmware? Simply removing the version check did not help.
Thank you - you are doing a good job.

Bump!

Can I second the request for a 2.12 installer? Vi is OK for basic tasks, but a simple word processor would be v cool :)

Interesting. The version check change worked for me. Although I did have to re-install it after making the change.

I really appreciate all the support to be found here. Thanks!

Dear Adam,
Would you be kind as to let us know if you are working on a new version for Firmware 2.12 or not.:chinscratch:
I have tried to install this version several times unsuccessfully, and I was each time getting the message that there was a mismatch between the application required firmware 2.11 and mine 2.12. I even made the change in the firmware script... still no luck...:o..

Thank you

I am also looking for a simple word processor that allows some formatting on text and able to edit rtf files.

Are there any options other than Abiword? Would somebody please update Abiword to 2.12?
Thanks.

Open the file Firmware_Script in Notepad. Change 2.11 to 2.12 and it will install without a problem.

Thanks Adam. Really appreciated your help.
Originally, I didn't change the version number, instead I tried to remove the conditions from the installation script, but probably I removed too much stuff. Now I did what you suggested + also changing the name of the directory was needed (as somebody pointed out earlier) to abiword_inst (or something else).

So this is great and I really like the tool, only minor points, if I could comment, is that when I try to go to page setup or zoom menu the application quits. I guess it is related to opening a child window (like page setup or zoom settings).

I would be more than happy if someone could sort out these minor things because otherwise I think the word processor is just great and works perfectly. It would be a shame if this great software would not be made fully operational on iLiad.

Thank you Adam! I was finally able to install this software successfully. Great addition to the iliad indeed!

Hi, I did install abiword, seems to work, but when opening a .doc-file 90% of letters become "?"s. Converting the same file in .odt-file makes it completely unreadable. Anyone can help me out?

I have problem with Abiword looks like above. I unzip install file to CF card to folder /software/abiword-install and edit Firmware_Script to 2.12.1. Abiword install successfully but still said “Shut down and Start your iLiad for the changes to take effect” and of course .doc files still showed Xs.
I try to install it again but without results.
What should I do ? I need to view .doc files.

Without having that firmware to test with, I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm afraid you're stuck until someone else with that firmware can troubleshoot, or until iRex upgrades the firmware so that both iLiad versions have the same.

I was lucky deleting all abiword files on Card, also all files on _root. Then reinstall.
That functionned, but without that I did something with it, now again the word docs are all with X Symbols... :chinscratch::chinscratch:
