View Full Version : FBReader Registry installer for 2.11
Adam B. 10-05-2007, 03:30 PM Because of problems with porting the latest version of FBReader (http://groups.google.com/group/fbreader/t/a943b69f855db5e8) to 2.11, I've decided to go ahead and release the registry installer.
What this will do, is allow you to open supported files (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13740) directly from the contentlister without having to use FBReader's library functions.
You will need to have firmware 2.11 and my latest port of FBReader (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11344) installed for this to work.
File Extensions Supported:
chm
rtf
oeb
opf
epub
fb2
tcr
nekokami 10-05-2007, 03:56 PM Thanks, this was what I needed to upgrade to 2.11! :D
nekokami 10-06-2007, 09:32 PM Any chance the uploaded archive is corrupted? I can't get it to unpack on my system....
JSWolf 10-06-2007, 09:40 PM The ZIP file uncompressed fine on my Windows system.
Adam B. 10-07-2007, 07:42 AM It unpacks for me as well.
Is anyone else having problems? Has anyone installed it? Comments or suggestions?
wallcraft 10-07-2007, 12:40 PM It works for me. The only problem I had was that some of my .fb2 files are in zip archives (.fb2.zip). These work in the content lister providing I unzip them first.
In the case of FB2 files, FBReader will automatically add them to its library (even if zipped) if they are in its search path.
I updated the ILiad_FBReader (http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/ILiad_FBReader) wiki page for the latest install method. I also added a few Usage Notes.
DeGodefroi 10-07-2007, 03:38 PM Unzipping, no problem.
Installed FBreader registry (I had fun with the beta for 2.10.2). Thanks Adam as always. And good luck with the porting issue!
nekokami 10-07-2007, 09:34 PM I'll try downloading again. It said 7kb, so I assumed I had the whole file, but there might have been an error somewhere in the process.
TOucan 10-09-2007, 11:34 AM Hi Adam:
I wonder if anyone else has had this problem. I followed the Standalone Install instructions for FBReader when I was running iLiad firmware 2.09 and 2.10 and have never been able to run FBReader. I tried once again today after updating to 2.11 and updating Shell access. I first ran the Registry hack and rebooted and the ContentLister showed FBReader Registry Hack has been installed. I then ran Install FBReader; lots of flashing green light activity for a minute or so. Rebooted and ContentLister again shows Install FBReader. No evidence of the program. Except for the the Registry Hack install step, this replicates my experience each time I have tried to install it with earlier firmware versions.
ConvertLit works great but I can't open any of the converted files without FBReader. Any thoughts.
Thanks for your help.
Adam B. 10-09-2007, 11:46 AM Are you installing on an external card? What version of FBReader are you installing? Does it show "FBReader has been installed" after you run the installer?

I'm trying to install it on my external CF card. I'm trying to install the version linked to your 10-05-2007, 04:30 PM posting which is the first posting in this thread; 0.8.4 I think.
After I run the installer I see in contentlister "Install FBReader".
Adam B. 10-09-2007, 02:05 PM Sounds like it's not running correctly. Make sure it's not in any folders with spaces, and that your CF card doesn't have any corruption.
wallcraft 10-09-2007, 03:08 PM I updated the wiki page to be more explicit about the steps required, see: ILiad FBReader (http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/ILiad_FBReader). However, this is pretty much what you did already.
My memory (from two weeks ago) is poor, but I think the following is what I did: a) copy the unziped directory to the base directory of the CF card, b) reboot after selecting the installer. You should then have FBReader in directory Programs and another directory _local for files internal to FBReader.

Well I hate to do it but throwing in the towel is starting to look pretty appealing. I tried the install on a usb stick and it worked like a charm so that boosted my confidence. I then re-formatted the CF card, put a fresh unzipped fbreaderinst folder on the drive and tried an install. Same problem; after reboot i'm still getting the Install FBReader listing in contentlister.
realityloop 10-11-2007, 06:41 PM Is it possible to install FBReader on the Iliad's internal memory, in my attempts so far it seems to do really weird stuff when you restart the Iliad after installing it.. I've had to reflash.. but for the sake of battery life I would like to have it on the internal memory..

You'll have to move libX11 from _local/lib to _local/private/lib and also modify LD_LIBRARY_PATH in start.sh in the programs directory.
"LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/private/lib" should work.

Adam,
is that quoted change the only thing, or will I need to do that as well as move libX11 after the installer has run?
thanks

You will need to move libX11 as well.
chmreader 10-29-2007, 07:27 PM I am new on this forum. I want an eBook reader specifically for my Chm files. Will FBReader support Chm fully on iLiad? I mean will I be able to view the Chm tree structure and open and collapse the chm tree as on a pc? Can I use the Chm search function to search in the chm file? My chm file is 200 Mb is size. Also is the chm tree pane and the right page pane visible at the same time as on a pc? Or it has be toggled? Please help and reply to these questions so that I can decide. Thanks.
chmreader 10-29-2007, 07:55 PM I downloaded FBReader on XP. It opens other chm files which are around 15 to 20 MB in size but it when I try to open my 200 MB Chm file, the screen goes blank and it does nothing. Can anyone kindly help? Does FBReader support big files of 200 Mb size on the PC and on iLiad?
wallcraft 10-29-2007, 09:20 PM FBReader currently reads the entire file into memory during initialization of a new e-book. I don't know how much space this requires, but it is certainly more than the original file size.
On a Desktop machine (Linux or Windows), it should be possible to configure enough virtual memory to import any reasonably sized file with FBReader. Although there may be a 32-bit file/memory limit (typically 1 GB or more). However, I don't know how to increase the swap space under Windows. If you can send the file to the developers, they may be able to help. Try posting to the FBReader Google Group (http://groups.google.com/group/fbreader) (even if you can't supply the CHM file). It is also possible that FBReader is working as it should but importing a 200 MB file takes a long time even on a fast desktop. So I suggest leaving it for ~10 minutes to see if it eventually comes up.
On the iLiad, memory is very limited. On the Nokia 770 (and N800), it is possible to add swap space on a MMC card, but I have not heard of anything similar for the iLiad. I did hang the iLiad on a 4 MB CHM file with FBReader - the same file loaded fine on a Windows XP Desktop. I was able to read both a 4 MB and a 7 MB CHM file on a Nokia 770, although the 7 MB file took more than 5 minutes to import.
