View Full Version : Does this HanLin V3 have Vizplex? (VIDEO)
fjell_strom 09-22-2007, 09:07 AM I received a HanLin V3 reader the other day from Jinke. The box carried a sticker bearing the word "Vizplex". There was no other reference to Vizplex anywhere that I could see on either the device or in the literature accompanying the device.

Having watched the French video presenting the upcoming Cybook - also featuring the new Vizplex eInk screen - I was under the impression that page-turning on the V3 would be equally as fast as it seems to be in the Cybook video. http://www.teleread.org/blog/?p=6889
As you can see in my video featuring the V3 from Jinke, page turning is dramatically slower, promting me to ask the simple question: does my device have a Vizplex screen at all? As I stated before, there is no indication that I have a device with Vizplex other than a solitary, miniscule sticker on the box:

What do you think?
fjell_strom 09-22-2007, 09:13 AM JSWolf already commented on another thread:
All I can say is that your V3 page turn speed is slower then my Sony (non-Vizplex) Reader (PRS500) page turn speed using the built-in fonts.
tribble 09-22-2007, 10:56 AM I dont think you can determine that from page turn speed. The actual flip seems quite fast.
Then it depends on the waveforms used to update the scree, then on the software readers n and lastly on the processor speed.
But to mee the screen seems quite bright for a video, so i would assume its vizplex. A side by side comparison would help there :)
bandsaw 09-22-2007, 02:26 PM My eyes aren't what they used to be but it looks like you are flipping through a PDF and as such, the page turns seem pretty quick!
CommanderROR 09-22-2007, 05:35 PM I'd say the refresh is OK, but it takes some time to load the next page. This is probably due to bad/missing page prechaching or just generally bad software.
That's always the trouble with this kind of device...the nicest Hardware won't help if the software implementation is bad.
I'd suggest talking to Jinke...they are usually very responsive and might tell you what's going on. Maybe there is a new firmware out there or in development that works faster.
THJahar 09-22-2007, 05:43 PM the contrast looks a lot better than my V2, but I can't quite judge the comparison between the page turns (see my video)

It does look like that the actually page flip is slightly quicker but the data loading looks like to be the same speed as mine

Given how slow the V3 seems to get ready to turn the page, I'll stick with my Sony.

Hi,
Brief "quick screen" you can easily reach themselves (as demonstrated CyBOOK). This requires a simple program display images and adapts images (800 * 600, 2 bit) in bmp format. And you will surprise their guests speeds Hanlin V3. :)
If you want to view PDF CyBook, then you will find disappointment: Hanlin V3 will be easier CyBook.
Tip:
do not forget to update the software Hanlin V3
I do not know how often Chinese updating software Hanlin V3, we update software lBook V3, about once a month.
Unfortunately, I can not advise you to use software lBook. It focuses on the use of our popular formats txt, fb2 (xml), rtf.
PDF, DOC, CHM, HTML, we still use the Chinese version.
hello 09-28-2007, 01:37 PM looks very slow sorry you had to buy before finding out. they should release preview models i think.
zdevil 09-29-2007, 09:15 AM IIRC the Gen3 demo video is using an ("optimized"?) image file but not text. A fair comparison should be using the same file on difference devices.
Now I see the price of the Vizplex version drop to $329. Actually the one I got has a "Sample" sticker on it (instead of "Vizplex"). Would it be a Vizplex "sample"? :)
Off topic: Frankly i am very tired of hearing continuous biased bashing of V3 (without trying the device in person) and the "Chinese crap" theories. Also not every reader (I for one) buys the DRM approach to ebooks.
zdevil 10-01-2007, 02:22 AM Thanks fjell_storm for the video. I find my V3 runs as fast as yours.
Trono 10-01-2007, 08:19 AM Fjell,
I'm pretty sure I've got the non-Vizplex model (at least there was no mention of it when I got the V3 from Jinke), but based on your video I can't see that yours has faster page-turning than mine.

When did you get it? I bought mine at the end of August.
hello 10-01-2007, 12:59 PM fjell how do you feel about v3 overall now?
Trono 10-04-2007, 05:21 AM When did you get it? I bought mine at the end of August.
My reader was shipped from china on aug. 21.
JSWolf 10-04-2007, 08:56 AM fjell_strom when you turn a text page on the V3, does it go all black and then the text appears or does the text appear and then the black surrounds the text and then goes away?
The second method is how it works on the new Sony PRS505. The first method is how it works on the Sony PRS500.
dameuna 10-29-2007, 03:20 PM I just received my V3. It also has a "Vizplex" sticker on the outside. I would also like to comfirm that this is indeed true. I stated in my order that I only wanted the Vizplex.
The only way to tell for sure whether we have Vizplex or not is to create a uniform experiment for each of us to measure either speed or contrast. E-Ink Inc. claims that Vizplex is up to twice as fast and privides 20% more contrast. Therefore the speed difference should be the easier one to measure. We need to use the simplest file format so that the effect of computer processing time is at the minimum. Probably a simple .txt file would be best. I have uploaded a copy of Gutenberg's "The Return of Tarzan" in text format. I suggest that we each do the following:
1. Load this book onto the external SD card.
2. Open the book at page 1.
3. Check your second hand on your watch and when it is at "12", start turning pages.
4. Continue turning pages until the second hand is again at "12". Hit the 'next page' button slightly before the current page is completely displayed.
The V3 will buffer this key and execute it immediately after displaying the current page. The V3 only appears to buffer one key maximum.
5. Stop pressing keys when the second hand is again at "12". One more page may possibly get displayed, if a key was buffered.
6. Report back to the group the page number that you reached.
I did this three times and I got up to page: 40, 40 and 41.
The only way to compare one screen to another, to determine if it is Vizplex, is to keep all other factors equal. This means that both should be:
1. The same make and model of Reader.
2. The same version of the firmware.
3. The same text.
4. The same format text file.
5. The same experiment for measuring the times.
Otherwise, it is just guess work and the difference is speeds could be for any number of reasons.
JSWolf 10-29-2007, 10:06 PM Have you seen any of the shots of the Sony 505 or the Gen3? Both are Vizplex. Compare yours to that and you should be able to see if it is or is not Vizplex.
try_again 10-31-2007, 09:58 AM I did this three times and I got up to page: 40, 40 and 41.
I tried and got 39 but wasn't watching very close attention so might have squeezed in another 1 or 2 pages. This is with V3, just updated to latest firmware and the file you suggested. I'd be very surprised if it wasn't vizplex as I feel the screen is wonderfully in terms of contrast and readability in various light conditions

I think we will find there will be two groups of results. Some with results averaging around 39-40 and another group with results averaging arround some other number. If that other number is less than ours, we have Vizplex. If it is more, then they do. Of course if we all have the same results, then we all have the same screen and still do not know what it is.
Here some more videos of the V3 that could be useful: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15683
Trono 11-05-2007, 07:15 AM Tried the test twice, and I got to page 37 both times. No mention of vizplex when I bought it..

That would mean that my results and those of try_again are only 5 to 8 percent faster than yours. Not much a difference in speed.
