I was just wondering (and this demonstrates my current level of boredom) how the eDGe detects that the lid is closed?
Is it some switch built into the hinge mech., or proximity devices built into both sides? I've closed the lid very slowly and peeked between the halves, and it seems to be "on" RIGHT up to the moment it closes.

From what I've seen from taking mine apart, it appears to be magnetic proximity. There is no switch in the hinge, and there are two magnets on the lcd side. One magnet is right where the pen sits, and the other one is on the opposite side.

I asked the elf who turns off the light in the refrigerator and he wasn't sure.
The paperclip test around the case/bezel shows a strong magnetic field between the camera and the rubber pad on the open edge of the LCD side. Swiping a carry case (containing a strong magnet) from my blackberry across the corresponding edge of the bezel on the E-Ink side caused the LCD screen to shut off.

So, despite the ignorance of your Elf, it's magnets. Cool. Magnets tend not to fail like knife, leaf or pin switches -- nice design. I'll just take care not to drop my PE into SAND.
