AT&T researchers call for smartphone apps that won't suck your battery dry
Fascinating! They used Android as the test bed, but say that it's the apps, not the OS that matters.

why does this matter for ebooks? Once they are in your machine, the ereader won't suck your battery dry for reading them.
what sucks a battery dry is networking. When I want to save battery I simply turn on "airplane mode" so that all networking is down. I also turn off most user apps, leaving just the reader and some multimedia playing in the background. Playing music locally doesn't matter. It's nuts what Apple is doing with the cloud thing: downloading your songs on the fly?... pffft |

^ Very true and point taken. I guess my point is more a general comment. IMO way too many apps ping the network, smartphone [or otherwise] - for sure though your method works great [the airplane mode].
Still, it might be nice not to have to actively do that wouldn't it? Or at least be given clear notification before apps ping the network and more importantly, ask me for permission first. Exactly like apps on computers - I detest apps that "phone home" without my express consent. |
