I noticed some of the information about tweaking Ermine has started to become splintered and lost in the interwebs. Therefore, I'm consolidating the information to this thread, which I'll update as soon as new information becomes available. In addition, I've added a list about the known bugs in Ermine, so we can work together to come up with some solutions to these problems.

(For those of you who know me, the truth is I'm still procrastinating on my dissertation.)

If you aren't familiar with some of the language on this thread, I recommend checking out emusan's glossary (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143341). Also, he offers this helpful piece of advice: "If you don't know what one of the terms means you should likely do some more research about what you are doing before proceeding. When developing on a device like this (especially without warranty or official support), it can be very risky." Finally, if you're not familiar with what "rooting" means, you might want to check out this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1944585&postcount=27).

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you backup any sensitive files before messing around with your device. If you completely wreck your system, instructions for restoring it to its factory state can be found here (http://www.edge.ympsa.com/restorefactory16/goldenrevert.pdf). In some cases, you might have trouble reverting back to Dingo because the update will reboot after only about thirty seconds. If you are having these problems, you might want to try darkgrue's fix (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143035).

Installing Ermine and Rooting your Device

Step 1. Download the Ermine update files (http://www.edge.ympsa.com/).

Step 2. Install the Ermine update (http://armjam533.blogspot.com/2011/07/fun-with-entourage-pocket-edge.html). Before you get started, just be aware that you are taking some risk (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142190), although most users think it's worth it. While this might seem obvious, make sure you install the appropriate update file. You will mess things up (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143462) if you install the Pocket Edge update on the full-sized Edge.

Step 3. Download z4root and root your device (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dmobile-apps&field-keywords=z4root&x=0&y=0). Most of the tweaks on this thread require you to gain root access, which is a mostly safe procedure that gives you more control over your operating system. After you launch z4root, select the "permanent root" option. The program should do the rest of the work.

Step 4. Invest some money in Titanium Backup (http://matrixrewriter.com/android/) and Root Explorer (http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Software-Root-Explorer/dp/B004SRWW0C). Trust me: they're worth it.

Gapps

1. Install the Golden Allmine Update (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159872) - While installing this update will wipe your device, it will provide you with access to Gapps and the Google Market. Just a warning: do not try to install this on the original, full-sized eDGe. The update is only for the Pocket eDGe and will therefore brick your device.

2. Enabling the Android Market with a Rooted Phone (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138013) - If you have the larger Entourage eDGe, you might want to try this procedure. It requires that you have a rooted Android phone with Titanium Backup.

3. Enabling Gapps without a Rooted Phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13783490&postcount=17) - While you currently can't get the market to work without using one of the above methods, you can at least enable some of the other gapps. Once you get the applications installed, you need to setup your Google account through the YouTube application. If you have some problems syncing your account, try emusan's method on this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733). Finally, if this all seems like too much of a hassle, consider using the built-in Froyo Mail application (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135866) to skip the entire process.

Build.prop Tweaks

wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 90
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=60
ro.sf.lcd_density=120

For more information about these changes, check out yugami's (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1599207&postcount=22) posts (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1599925&postcount=26).

Ermine Bugs

1. Hibernation Issues - Some people have problems with Ermine locking up when coming out of hibernation. This issue doesn't appear to affect all devices. At the moment, we're speculating that the eDGe was built with a variety of different hardware chips, which is a tactic that companies occasionally use to keep down prices. Right now, there is no fix for the problem, although some users have been trying to develop a workaround (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141537). If you have any suggestions, jump over to that thread.

2. The White Screen of Death (WSOD) - Many users have reported that the LCD screen will occasionally flash white when they awaken the device from hibernation. In certain rare cases, the white screen never goes away (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142249), even after the person does a hard reset. If you have this problem, most likely your device is hosed. My best advice is to let it sit for a few hours and then try it again. The problem appears to be a hardware issue relating to the ribbon cable that goes through the hinge.

3. Low Battery Life - Some people have complained about the battery life in comparison to other tablets. Fortunately, bunodosoma discovered (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142351)that the phone and telephony applications might have been causing the problem. Seeing how they are not actually used by the eDGe, you can disable them by going to your system/apps folder in Root Explorer and renaming phone.apk and telephony.apk (my recommendation would be changing them to phone.old and telephony.old, just in case you need to restore them for some reason in the future). The device might lock up after you rename the phone.apk, but everything should work find after a hard restart. Currently, users are estimating this tweak might improve battery life by almost 2 hours. I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with it.

4. Moving Apps to SDCard - Not fixed, but you can find a workaround here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138124). In addition, you might have problems installing some apps because they attempt to automatically install the sdcard. If you have such difficulties, you have one of two options. First, you can switch the sdcard and internal memory by following the third step of these instructions (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138124). Then, you can simply unplug your sdcard and try to install. Alternatively, you might try manually unmounting your internal memory through the terminal. In order to do this, you need to first root your device. Then, open up the "dev tools" application and select the "terminal emulator." Then, type "su" and hit enter. Afterwards, type "umount /sdcard" and try to install your program. I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a shot. :)

5. E-ink PDF Annotation - Limited underlining capabilities in portrait mode, doesn't work in landscape mode. Currently, best option is to download Repligo (http://www.amazon.com/Cerience-Corporation-RepliGo-Reader/dp/B004SVM7BW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307544783&sr=8-1) or ezPDF Reader (http://www.amazon.com/Unidocs-Inc-ezPDF-Reader/dp/B004R13U6Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1307762621&sr=1-1).

6. Lack of Lock Code on Startup - For some reason, the Entourage developers decided it would be smart to have a $450 device with no lock code, for they have purposely disabled this feature. Luckily, you can work around this problem. One route is to download MySettings (http://www.amazon.com/JQ-Soft-MySettings/dp/B004JKTDRI/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309441760&sr=1-1-fkmr1). Once you boot up the application, it has a "PIN" options in the upper-right corner, which allows you to turn on the lock screen. Alternatively, you can simply use the shortcut feature of Launcher Pro. (If you haven't installed Launcher Pro (http://www.launcherpro.com/), I highly recommend it. I personally believe it is the best launcher for Android devices). Essentially, what you do is press and hold on a blank space on the homescreen. Then, you will receive an "Add to Home Screen" dialog box, and you should select "Shortcuts" from the menu. Next, you want to go down to "Activities." You will get a massive list of options. You need to open up "Settings" and choose the option that says "com.android.settings.ChooseLockGeneric" in small letters. Finally, you just select this new icon on your screen. While this method is a little more complicated, I think it's the better option, mostly because you'll save $.99 on purchasing the otherwise worthless MySettings app.

Application Problems

1. Netflix doesn't work. If you are interested in playing around with it, check out this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150).

2. Adobe Flash doesn't play video. You can install it, but you need to download version 10.1.61.68 (http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/adobe-flash-player).

3. The browser doesn't automatically open *.txt files. Javese has edited the apk file (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142906) so Android will ask you whether you want to open *.txt files in the browser. This might be useful because you can use the browser's print-to-eink feature to open e-books that come in *.txt format.

4. Unfortunately, most games work slow as molasses. While the community is not exactly sure of the exact problem, it is most likely a combination of poorly written video drivers and a strange processor (http://www.marvell.com/products/processors/applications/armada_100/armada_168/pxa_168_pb.pdf) without the necessary graphics abilities. However, you can get a few games to work. Angry Birds (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1597531&postcount=12) works perfectly fine once you disable the background. In addition, Angry Birds Rio and some other apps seem to work after installing Chainfire 3D (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138639). Alas, Fruit Ninja is still too slow to be playable. :(

5. Limited options for dumping items from the LCD to the e-ink side. The browser allows you to copy over websites, but if you're working in a different application, you're out of luck. Fortunately, javese has written an app (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143791) that allows you to essentially do a screen capture and send that information over to the e-ink screen. I haven't personally tried it, but other users have given it their seal of approval.

Nice guide!

My fix/workaround doesn't require the youtube work around(at least it didn't for me, other users might have a different experience)... I've kinda taken a break from eDGe stuff for a little while(at least development, I'm still answering questions, hosting stuff, etc.) I'll probably start back up in the next week or so(assuming nothing big comes up)...

You might want to try and add this to the wiki as well, so we can all cross stuff off and add stuff as we complete it. That and a sticky would be nice(need to wait for a mod for that though)...

And on the topic of messing up devices... one time I was trying to gain some more space on my n900 by moving my home partition to another device(or something like that it was awhile ago), so I mounted it to a folder in the root, and then a few days later I for got about that and did an rm -rf on that folder, I noticed it about 30 seconds after starting and quickly hit Ctrl-C many times, it ended up only deleting a lot of the system stuff but my personal files were kept...

Gmail, google calendar, and contacts all sync just fine without having to load any special software or apps pulled out of an android phone.

The setup procedure is in this thread:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135866

I have two gmail accounts set up on my PE and everything syncs and automatically updates without any screwing around on my part.

I'm convinced Flash will work on the EE or PE. I played around with a browser called Skyfire that will play Flash video but the small preview window won't go away. Skyfire can be downloaded here:

http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/skyfire
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/skyfire-video-license-key

Full flash video demo:

As far as PDFs go, Repligo is a good reader but personally I think ezPDF is better. You can highlight, do web searches, book searches, underline, cross out, add sticky notes etc. to most PDFs.

http://www.forum-bec.com/f244/ezpdf-reader-1-1-1-0-cyberandroid-37856/ FileSonic, select Slow Download.

ezPDF will even read your PDF to you if you have a language pack installed (pretty well I might add):

Android PICO Installer Language Pack (Not an App. Works with other Apps like ezPDF reader).

*** Download using your device ***
http://areacellphone.com/2010/01/download-free-android-pico-text-to-speech-language-installer/

Download via PC: http://www.1mobile.com/pico-tts-language-installer-android-62221.html Select Samsung S8000 (doesn't matter), Download, Transfer, Install.

sorry if it sounds like I'm nitpicking, but Mark's thread actually doesn't require any gapps be installed, you don't even need to be rooted I think... It just uses the included froyo email. the only problem is that it doesn't technically set up a "google account" so you wont be able to use official gapps... At least if I understand it right.

The Froyo Mail app that installs with the ermine update allows you to sync gmail, google calendar, and contacts without rooting or adding any other apps. You do need to have a gmail account first, of course, but you can get one of those by going to the web site.

I updated the thread in a way that reflects all the different options. Thanks for the tip, obsessed - I have some issues with how RepliGo does handwriting support, so maybe I'll prefer ezPDF.

I just assumed Flash worked after I installed the latest version. But when I go over to that demo, it doesn't work. Can anybody confirm this? I haven't had any luck installing anything beyond 10.1.

Also, when the xda community figures out how to get Netflix working on other devices, I'm assuming it will work on the Pocket Edge. For some reason, it's really important to me that I can watch Netflix. :)

lol same, Netflix streaming would be HUGE, maybe at some point in the far future we can even get gingerbread working...

Here's my question: WHY won't flash work? I feel like the single greatest achievement in the Entourage Edge world would be enabling flash on this device. The CPU really, really should be able to handle it.

The older version of flash installs fine (so there's audio, just no video, correct?) but the install fails itself. This is the same issue I'm seeing with a lot of Amazon apps (angry birds, stupid zombies, etc...) plus a lot of the root apps that would really help this device (setcpu was the biggie, I was at least hoping to be able to overclock the CPU to its stock 1.2 ghz speed)

I'm just really hoping someone (certainly not me, I can't even get ADB to work properly) who's got those sick development skillz has some idea of what's causing these items to fail, because it genuinely seems like the edge is a total sleeper in terms of potential useability.

obsessed2

The Edge definitely has the ability to process Flash, even with the processor underclocked at 800 MHz.

http://www.marvell.com/products/processors/applications/armada_100/armada_168/pxa_168_pb.pdf

Installing Flash 10.1 results in audio with no video. In my case I had to uninstall it because it was interfering with Flash Lite which the Edge uses for other video sources (You Tube). Flash 10.2 will not install.

Skyfire is a web browser that proves the Edge can play Flash content but there is a small pop-up preview window that will not go away.

Agentbolt -

You can actually get Angry Birds to work. The problem with the installation has nothing to do with the eDGe's graphic capabilities but is related to the sdcard problem. It attempts to automatically install to the sdcard, but it can't because of some kind of encryption issues. The way around this is to just unmount the sdcard.

Unfortunately, my system is now configured a little strangely because I've been messing around with it. Therefore, I'm not exactly sure how to get it to work with a standard configuration. You might try two things:

A. Just unplug the sdcard and give it a shot.

B. Go into DevTools and start the terminal emulator. Then, type the following commands:

su
umount /sdcard

Then, install Angry Birds and reboot. You might need to have your system rooted for this to work, but that is a pretty simple process; all you need to do is install and run z4root from the Amazon Marketplace.

Angry Birds runs fine as long as you turn off the background. Otherwise, it's too slow to be playable. I would be extremely interested in figuring out how to overclock this device; however, to get even better performance, my guess is we'd have to play around with the video drivers, which is definitely beyond my ability.

As for Flash, I have no idea why I can't install one of the later versions. The logcat readout is weird, and I can't find any more information about the problem on the interwebs. If you try either of these things, just let me know if they worked, and I'll update the thread.

Angry birds would be a dream come true on this thing, background or no. Unfortunately I don't believe your advice would work for me, as I moved my file system ONTO the SD card, which for whatever reason made the internal 2 gigs of storage simply disappear. With the SD card unmounted I can't even download the APK and put it on my system, and the Amazon Appstore won't even try to install it w/o an SD card installed. Thanks for the heads up on it working for a standard install, though.

I'd have to assume the problems with Flash, SetCPU, and pretty much any of the other headaches we're running into have to do with this Marvel CPU. Googling it shows it simply wasn't used in ANYTHING else. These apps just don't know what to do with it.

Agentbolt

All right, so, I take it back, you can absolutely install angry birds even if you've moved the filesystem to the SD Card. I didn't realize ES File Explorer could move the apk from the external to the internal SD Card.

Did you actually get it working at that point though? Firstly, the game will crash the entire edge if you attempt to play it in portrait, you have to rotate to landscape first (simple enough) However, in either landscape mode the game has the problem of not responding to touch inputs in the right place. If I click the gear (settings) icon, the other side menu will open where I can share via facebook or watch videos. If flipped around to the other side, the opposite problem. Also, the sound, info, and background buttons then don't work.

This is 1.5.3, the latest version, also I DO have my edge flipped to have the reader on the right hand side. If anyone else feels like messing with this further, quick hint, you don't need to root or pop out your SD card, simply go into settings under "device storage" (NOT the app, under settings) and simply unmount the SD card from there.

Someone on the old boards managed to get Rio working, you had to get the version from getjar though, its a little strange, but it kinda works... Here is the link to the thread I think: link (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137182&highlight=angry+birds+getjar)

and the app on getjar: link (http://www.getjar.com/mobile/71468/angry-birds-rio-for-marvell-brownstone/?s=phones)

its a little odd, but I got it working this way.

Interesting. Like I said, it's encouraging that it does install (and I'll bet most of the other Apps I can't get to install or load on Amazon's store could be sideloaded in this manner if the apk's can be found)

I did some more troubleshooting on Angry Birds, it doesn't matter which orientation the tablet is set to, including changing reader and tablet back to their original sides. I might give Rio a try, thanks emusan. Honestly though, it really seems to struggle even displaying the title screen (although admittedly I was unable to turn off the background) so I'm back to needing to overclock this thing a bit before the ability to install Angry birds is anything other than an academic success.

I'll give Logcat a more thorough look and see if I can figure out what's going on with SETcpu. Thanks again for the cool info everyone.

Angry Birds runs completely fine. However, I have access to the Android Market, which lets me actually download it. The Amazon Appstore automatically checks if the sdcard is mounted, so it won't even let me download. If you don't have access to the Android Market, your best bet is to find the apk somewhere online and sideload it. Now, there is a catch: once you get the game working, you need to click the mountain icon in the settings menu. This should turn off the background. Otherwise, the game is slow and unresponsive. Once you turn the background off, it's totally playable. It's actually kind of cool with the big screen.

Angry Birds Rio is more graphically intensive than it seems at first glance. Before I rooted my Optimus V, it was just barely playable, so I didn't expect it to work on my eDGe. Personally, I'm more interested in getting Fruit Ninja to work at a decent speed. It would be awesome with the big screen, which would make my fiancee love me forever.

Good day to everybody!
Can you help me - i have a big trouble with 3G Modem (Huawei) and EE under -0.9 Ermine beta. I can't connect to internet. Still can't connect. Maybe there's some kind of tweak or fix for this problem?
I'll be rather grateful.

kennyminot, modem is USB-stick Huawei E156G and it works perfectly with Dingo 1.11 release for EE.
But with Ermine, after I create new broadband connection and click 'connect' - it says 'connecting' and never connect to.
I try to connect thru PC with usb-cable, wi-fi and blutooth. Nothing. Maybe it's just Ermine's bug? Maybe it is possible to recombine Dingo and Ermine or with other A2.2 edits some way?

I think the wifi line will make it scan for wifi signals more or less often, thereby increasing or decreasing battery life.

And I don't think anyone has gotten adhoc working yet, sorry(I don't think it would be that hard though, probably just some drivers or something).

windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec makes the scrolling smoother and kills some of the "false clicks" i get when using my finger instead of the stylus.

wifi.supplicant_scan_inteval increases the time between scan pulses. Keeps wifi chatter to a minimum when not actively using it.

For some reason I can't save my wifi sleep settings. I need to see if I screwed some permissions up or something. i was trying to change it to sleep on screen off and it will click, but if I back out the setting reverts to normal.

Kennyminot, what version of Angry Birds are you running? As stated before, I'm sure it WOULD run fine if the background is disabled, however at least some of us are having problems even opening the menu to do it. I'd tried running it with the screen rotated 90 degrees both ways, with the display option set to have the LCD on left or right, nothing works. You can't click any of the menu options, or if you can, you have to actually click/tap on a blank space way above the icon, or on the opposite side of the icon, or whatever. If you try to click on the mountain icon itself absolutely nothing registers. Even when I tried to just run the game as-is, scrolling through the different episodes was reversed, scrolling from left to right made the icons go right to left.

Obsessed2, remember, if you've downloaded the .apk, you need to install it from the internal 2GB SD card, and any external SD card needs to be unmounted, or it won't work, the install will fail.

I unmounted and even removed (just to be sure) the ext SD card per your previous post and it was still no go.

Agent -

I have the version on the market, 1.5.3. If you have it installed, I have no clue why it won't run. It works perfectly fine on mine. Is there anything running in the background that might be interfering with it, maybe?

Obsessed -

Are you unmounting the /extsdcard or /sdcard? When you try to access the relevant folder in Root Explorer, does it tell you that it is unmounted?

The Edge is a little weird. The folder "/sdcard" is actually your internal memory. However, Angry Birds and other application still act like it is the sdcard. For that reason, I don't think just pulling out the sdcard will work. In addition, you won't have any luck unmounting it from the settings menu. Unfortunately, the /sdcard will still be mounted, so you'll still get the error messages. Most likely, your only option is to manually unmount your sdcard from the terminal window (one big advantage of swapping the two drives - switching /sdcard for /extsdcard - is that you'll no longer have to worry about that problem; you can just pull out your sdcard).

Obsessed, my setup may be different because I moved my filesystem to the SD card itself. I had to run the install file from the intsdcard directory of the root of the device, and had to do so with the SD card ejected.

Between my issues with the input icons being nonfunctional and obsessed's install not working, this is a temperamental little beast :)

I'm hoping someone can do something with this info and that I'm not being a total dolt sharing the obvious, but I did have to dig to find it. I read somewhere (should have saved that link!) that some apps have copywriting coded into them that "developer" devices, such as devices that are running a beta OS cannot install that app. This makes me wonder if downgrading to dingo, installing desired apps, then upgrading would get past a lot of these install errors...I am way too sidetracked these days to take the time right now. Maybe someone else can try or someone knows some workaround to this (aside from finalizing ermine! ::swoon:: )

emusan
06-13-2011, 10:55 AM
I would think that would be referring to a beta android OS, ermine is a beta in terms of entourages support, but IIRC it is running a stable version of Froyo. The problem may be due to market being installed, as I think some apps check for that.

Last_of_the_PEs
06-13-2011, 09:11 PM
Is this referring to installs that end with the cryptic "App did not install" message? Do apps check for the existence of sensors or a 3G or GPS I wonder? If those checks even exist and get applied as a default, I imagine some developers just neglect to remove them even though the capabilities do not impact their apps.

If the "developers version" issue is a reason apps don't install, we could alter the build.prop file to indicate a different version of Android was running, right? (unless it's buried somewhere else that gets checked)

kennyminot

The installation problems vary, but the vast majority come from the previously mentioned sdcard problem. They attempt to automatically install to the sdcard, even though apps2sd doesn't work. I've also had some strange problems because of the non-existence of various maps libraries. For the most part, though, I've managed to get everything I want to work.

Prior to installing ermine all the angry bird versions I got free (for a limited time) from Amazon all installed and ran on the full sized EE. (Ran and looked fine, but very slow.) Rio, seasons, and regular. With ermine I see they all looks like they're missing a color channel. Weird. They all play like an old dawg on a hot summer day. I'll see if the background makes a difference.

Turn off the background in the original version. You can get the others to work by installing Chainfire 3D, although you need to have your system for rooted.

They all run pretty well now on my PE. All definitely playable (Rio is slightly slow).

Got my PE in earlier today and have been working on tweaking it. Set up the Froyo mail to sync my calendar and contacts but didn't really like its look for email. The other default email(old version of K9 mail) didn't handle notifications well. However, after using Titanium Backup to uninstall the default mail client, I was then able install the newest version of K9 off http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/downloads/list It works really well. I turned off notifications from the Froyo mail (left it set up so it'd will keep my contacts/calendar) synced. And now K9 is setup as my primary email. Might mess around with the google apps install later, but for now, this seems much better than the default options.

Update:

The correct URL links for Ermine for both EE and PE are as follows:

EE: http://cdn.entourageedge.com/eermine...zip.ermine-0.9
PE: http://cdn.entourageedge.com/permine...zip.ermine-0.9

Notice "cdn" in the URL. The PE file downloaded correctly and installed correctly... however, the splash screen now says "Entourage Edge" instead of "Pocket Edge" and I'm sure I downloaded the correct file! BTW, using Ermine also fixed the Youtube issue I mentioned below. Thanks to "mrlanrat" for posting the correct updated links.

Hi all.. I'm new to the forum and to PE. I've combed through the forum for the past two weeks looking at stuff I can do with my new PE. I'm happy to say that we have quite a few talented users here! I can't wait to try out the different apps and etc!

However, the first thing I discovered is that "Tube" for Youtube doesn't work out of the box!!! I get a message saying that the video cannot be played for ALL youtube videos. What gives??

I also want to install Ermine, but following the instructions posted (https://www.entourageedge.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=265) didn't work for me at all. I downloaded the Ermine version for PE and followed the instructions from Entourage's website to every step. I never get to the "Updating Software" splash screen while pressing the MENU and ROTATE screen buttons. The PE just repeatedly "Initializes" until I let go of the buttons. I've tried holding the buttons for "10 seconds" and even for "5 minutes", but nothing seems to work. And yes, I do have the file renamed to "update.zip" and it is at the root of my USB stick. I'm fairly technical (ex developer), but can't seem to figure out what I'm not doing correctly. I don't get any error messages either.

Anyone with this similar experience can help? Thanks guys/gals!

My PE is currently at:
Model #: edgejr
Firmware: 1.6
Kernel: 2.6.29, buildmaster@zeke #17
Build #: DINGO-1.13

3. Workaround: Enable Market with Android Emulator (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136952&highlight=market&page=5) - This process seems a little too wild to be a workable solution, but it seems like fun trying to get it to work. I'd love to hear some people's experiences with this approach.

This is a perfect solution: no need for the second Android device - phone only.
I installed that system.img into Android 2.2+Google simulator.
It works on Win XP 32-bit better that Win 7 64-bit.
I can download any app from the market, but apps which rely on Google APIs - and those are more attractive - don't work on PE.
I believe I know how to install Google APIs into PE, but afraid to experiment with my own device.

Yeah, its nice, but a lot of users(myself included) could never get it to work properly. Also, I've run plenty of apps with google API's(I think every app uses them to some degree), however there are different API levels(I think Froyo is 7 or 8), so it's not possible to run something that is intended for API level 9 and above... There is no way that I know of to implement the newer API's(gingerbread, etc.) into Foryo, though someone else might know more...

Does anyone know a definitive way to determine why "Application did not install" happens?

I know my friend hacked his Android tablet to say it was an HTC because an app he wanted demanded security the developer knew was in the HTC tablet. Too bad we don't have PROCESS EXPLORER for Android. Then we could see what installs are looking for when they decide to KAG.

I keep having the nagging feeling some of the "requirements" are unused features that are only "necessary" because the developer left all the valves open to make debugging easier. Then they get close to the end, and they're tired of looking at the code AND the app and don't bother to weed out what they didn't need.

I know from experience that it practically takes HOT IRONS to get programmers to do the last tedious bits when they see the finish line ahead.

Usually it happens when one tries to install an app that requires Google APIs which are not installed on PE.
The sure way to find out is to try to install using adb and , then, run logcat.
E.g., when I tried to install one of the apps it failed because the app requires com.google.android.maps.jar. That doesn't mean if I had that jar the installation would succeed. Even if I installed that jar the installation might have failed on some other shared lib.
The other time the app required shared lib libvoicesearch.so.

Has anyone found a fix for the EE not waking from hibernate once upgrading to Ermine 2.2?

After about 5 minutes of hibernation my EE will not wake, the only solution is a battery pull.
I did some tests and I can tell the device is still "alive" alogcat can still save logs to the SD card while in hibernation; even when the EE refuses to wake up. So it looks like the EE is not receiving the signal to wake up from the menu button, or something is going wrong along the way.

Any ideas on what to look for pr test next?

This process worked for me. Yes the background off actually makes it playable. However you can't shrink the screen down so you can see the entire playing field, which just makes it a little more challenging :)

I also want to install Ermine, but following the instructions posted didn't work for me at all. I downloaded the Ermine version for PE and followed the instructions from Entourage's website to every step. I never get to the "Updating Software" splash screen while pressing the MENU and ROTATE screen buttons.

We have another user with a bricked system who has been having trouble using the manual restore feature. A possibility exists that it might not be working for some people.

That said, here's how I do it. First, rather than use a USB stick, I've always done it with an sdcard. I make sure it is completely blank except the update.zip file in the root folder. Then, before I hit the power button, I make sure I have the MENU and ROTATE buttons pressed down. While I"m holding them down, I slide on the power button. You have to hold them a few seconds while booting up, but you shouldn't need to keep them held until you see the updating software screen; at most, you only need to hold them a few seconds.

To me, sounds like it is looking for the update but not actually finding it. Are you sure you have the correct update file and the it is named "update.zip" on the root?

emusan - I can bring up the image on the tablet either from the "Gallery" icon or "Menu key + "Wallpaper"". I can tap the image and hold it as long as I want - no effect. If I just tap the image it opens up with a box to set the size and "Add" and "Discard" buttons - there is no "Add to Reader" option. If I use "Add" I just get a repeat on the tablet screen. Any ideas?

UPDATE:
Not entirely sure what I did now, BUT I re-imported the jpg into the on-board library (the original was on the SD card). Went to "Gallery" - it shows 2 copies of jpg. If I select one then hold down the (single) image with the pen it does indeed come up with the selection screen with the option to load to the eReader. My first attempt failed (I believe that this is the jpg on the SD card). My second attempt (I believe this was the Library image) suceeded. It appears that there may be some issue with "location" of the image file (Anyone?).

Of course, I'm happy to help, but you need to be more clear about your problems:

1. Which procedure, exactly, did you use? Are you trying to get the Market to work by using another Android phone? Or are you just attempting to manually install the various gapps? Remember: without another Android phone, we still don't have a method for getting the Market to work. You can only get the Market working if you have another Android phone.

2. If you were just manually installing the gapps, can you give me an exact list of what you installed? And did you use the YouTube application to enable your Google account?

3. If you are using another Android phone, can you describe the exact procedure that you used? What programs did you backup and copy over to your eDGe?

4. And, finally, what error messages have you been receiving? What exactly is wrong?

Hopefully, we can get this working!

Kennyminot.
I have just tried one last time to activate the market.
1. Rooted the EE. OK
22. Installed Titanium Backup and Root Explorer. OK
3. Unzipped the Happs files and placed them in the TB folder. OK
Previously I unzipped the files and then unzipped the GZ files before moving them to the TB folder. (No wonder it did not work).
4. Opened RB and resored the * files at the top of the page. i.e not the bottom. They had a checknark against them.
Rebooted and got nothing.
5. Did the market fix. OK
Now I have Gmail working, Calendar and Cintacts to a point.
Can open Market but get one of 2 messages when selecting an app. They are "authorising payment" or "Starting download" with no progressin either. No Talk. YouTube can play videos but cannot login to My Channel.
Thenk you si far.

I'm a little confused with these two steps:

22. Installed Titanium Backup and Root Explorer. OK
3. Unzipped the Happs files and placed them in the TB folder. OK

You actually don't need to unzip anything to get the Market to work. Basically, you just do this: you take your Android phone, backup the gapp files with Titanium Backup, and move the folder directly to your eDGe. Then, you restore them in Titanium Backup on your eDGe. You shouldn't have to unzip any of the files.

Also, when you backed them up on your phone, did you select the app+data option?

OK - finally -

Go to settings and then click Accounts & Sync. Look to see if you have your Google account in the list. If not, see what happens if you manually add it with the "add account" button on the bottom of the page. To me, it sounds like you might have never went through the account authorization process.

I am also now getting on my Edge that there is an update available. I will post more when I try this at home. I ran out of time here at work.

I download from the Amazon App Store from Brazil. I did open the Amazon account when I lived in the US, so their system does not seem to filter out non US IP addresses. I think that non-US residents would also have to have access to a US credit card, as well as a US address, to open an account, but I'm not sure of that...

If you are trying to use a windows based PC you have two choices.

1) Turn off the AV software on the PC, download it, copy it to a USB stick, unplug the USB stick and turn on the AV software again.

2) Download a Linux live CD image, burn it to CD, reboot the PC with the live CD, download it and copy to USB.

Kenny, the Amazon app store appears to be US only at the moment :(

I followed the op instructions for installing the gapps from the wiki HPDI file, but ended up with a YouTube that automatically loads and has no login mechanism that I can find. There is no entry in the "Account and Sync" setting for YouTube for me to add an account or sign in as there is with Gmail. (When I try to log in to Gmail, I get the cannot make a reliable data connection failure message.)

I am not sure if I did something wrong. If I want to retry, do I need to delete all the app files or is there a way to uninstall and then do a fresh install. I may NOT have installed Gmail last and I install each app with a restart before the next install.

I also notice that now a window pops up periodically asking me to choose between Launcher and SetupWizard to complete something. If I select SetupWizard, a window announces that it crashed and then I select Launcher and the action completes.

After initial failures at getting Gmail to work, I added the onetimeinitializer app. It didn't appear to do anything. I also tried to install the Network location app, but the install of that fails.

All install attempts have been using the default file manager.

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

Steve

I tried Kenny's file to obtain gapps (from the wiki) and I couldn't find how to login to YouTube.

You don't find YouTube (or Gmail) in the Sync and Accounts list - only google. When I tried to login with my Gmail/YouTube username and password, it didn't work.

I finally uninstalled and deleted all the files and used the approach from emusan with Titanium Backup. That worked as far as gmail. However, I still couldn't login to YouTube.

Then, I thought of using the menu key while in YouTube. That is where you can enter login in.

So, if any other noobies don't know that, it might enable them to use the YouTube "bypass" successfully with Kenny's files.

I updated/installed the 1.01 firmware and am trying to downgrade back to 0.9. I know I need to use the golden update, but one it gets to the "installing software" screen, it only stays there about 3-4 seconds, then reboots and attempts to just boot up the Pocket eDGe, which gets to 4 dots, flashes the LCD side of the screen and never gets past that point.

After this is has also deleted the update.zip file from my USB. I've tried both the golden (1.13) and the 1.6 update.

Please help!

Awesome! Downgrade in progress. Thanks!

Also, can someone outline the benefits of the 1.01 or 1.01.001 or 1.02 firmware? The main reason for my downgrade is that when it tried connecting to my Google accounts it would always pop up some mobile device/carrier screen, then never actually connect, even though my wireless was working on YouTube and Browser, etc...

I plan on giving these as gifts, and would really like to have functioning Google accounts (and Market... but I've read that that can be complicated). The recipients aren't tech savvy, and the Amazon App Store kept telling me that every app I tried to install wasn't compatible. I don't really want to have to give them instructions for side-loading apps (even using Dropbox), or for hunting down apps they might want through *other* sites, because neither of those things will happen on their end, and it'll be up to me to do this whenever they come to visit. :(

1. Go here to xda-developers forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7674767&postcount=1)
2. Download wpa_adhoc-signed.zip.
3. Unzip file and extract wpa_supplicant
4. On PE rename /bin/wpa_supplicant /bin/wpa_supplicant.old (or whatever)
5. Copy new version of wpa_supplicant to /bin directory onn PE
6. Change file permissions to 755 for /bin/wpa_supplicant
7. Reboot PE
8. Start sharing wifi from your phone or whatever adhoc network you use
9. See your network name in the list with an asterisk (*)!
10. Select and connect

Now I can connect to my phone's adhoc wifi without having to use ZT-Adhoc Switcher. The phone shows up in the normal wifi access point list. This makes it so much more convinient :D

BTW I'm rooted and running ermine 2.2. I most likely will not work on dingo.

All thanks to the original poster/patcher!!!

Accordingly here's what it should do:
The patch below modifies the wpa_supplicant code in the external/wpa_supplicant AOSP repo to make ad-hoc networks appear as regular APs with a (*) prefix.

The patch:

* removes the [IBSS] flag from scan results,
* masquerades and demasquerades ad-hoc ssid with (*) prefix
* sets mode 1 (ad-hoc) if the ssid is for IBSS
* permits the supplicant to select an IBSS when associating to a given ssid

Having problems getting wallpaper (jpg) to show on reader screen. With first PE (with Android 1.6 loaded) I bought I seem to remember that I just loaded the jpg, and added the wallpaper from the main screen - it showed up on BOTH screens (tablet and reader) afterwards I upgraded to Android 2.2 beta. With my current acquisition I upgraded the system first to ANdroid 2.2 beta, THEN added the wallpaper - but it only shows up on the tablet screen. Is there some way to get it to show up on BOTH screens with Android 2.2 beta?

I don't know if it works in other applications, but if you use the Picasa app just click on any photo and then the menu allows you to make it a wallpaper for the Reader side or the Tablet side. Really easy.

I can't say it's true for all gingerbread versions, but I had gingerbread (2.3) on my device I used to get gapps working and it didn't work - although I saw it right away because only a couple would install. Then I re-rommed my other tablet with a Froyo version, got market and all the gapps working on it, then backed them up with Titanium - market fix, etc and viola! Works like a charm except for one little issue with shared libraries - com.google.android.maps.xml and .jar which have to be in place for some apps to install. But don't worry about that until you get the full market working. Also, don't forget to reboot.

2 apps I wanted on my PE were TV.com and Mint.com. (Yeah I know the mint app on a tablet is not that cool, but it is still better than using my iPod touch.)
I had market working great and all was going fine until I tried to install those 2 apps on my PE and several others (I think). What it would do was fail on install with "missing shared libraries".
If you go to http://nookdevs.com/Honeycomb_Google_Apps_and_Market
the last solution deals with this issue.
How I fixed mine:
From the tablet (it's a gTablet) with the "good" and fully functioning TV.com, etc.. I copied (emailed) those 2 files to myself. If you can't see them, try a different file mgr like Astro and use the "list" view.
Then from my pocket edge I simply downloaded those files from my emails and then I had to use root explorer to make the particular directories R/W and then I pasted the files to the proper spots.
Now, mint.com and TV.com work great and installed fine!

Before I found that fix I had looked around trying to get error log info without using ADB and couldn't find anything that worked. Seems to me I should be able to open a terminal and see the logs... Anyone know what is saved and where? (Sorry to be so ignorant, but I just got into Android)

For me the easy way was to plug the eDGe into my PC (mount it to be seen in my windows box) and then install the apps that where failing.

No, you shouldn't need to do a factory reset.
Did you make sure you downloaded the last version (rc3)?
How does the upgrade fail?

You can include the update.log file as an attachment to the post, I think (please compress it into a zipfile first).

wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 90
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=60
ro.sf.lcd_density=120

Does it matter were you put the lines in the build.prop? What does the first two do??? Thanks

I used the eDGe mainly as a document reader - because I'm an academic, I'm continually reading and editing PDF files, and it worked very well for that purpose. Unfortunately, it pretty much sucked as a media device. I couldn't watch movies on it or play even the most simple games. As such, I ended up also buying an HP Touchpad. Sometimes, I'd lug around both to various places.

Because the HTC View has a stylus, it basically combines both these two worlds. I can annotate PDF files on the touchscreen, and I can consume media when I just want to play. So it allowed me to replace both tablets with an all-purpose device.

I originally didn't buy it because of the lukewarm reviews. Most people criticized the PDF software, saying that the stylus made lines that were too long for annotation. The stylus also was only functional in some apps. Recently, though, it got a honeycomb update that made the stylus universal, which is what made my take the plunge. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the built-in PDF software (I didn't have any of the problems mentioned by the critics; the lines always were thin enough for my taste). I still use the packaged software instead of EZ PDFReader.

It also has an awesome note app that syncs with Evernote. In my opinion, it's currently one of the best tablets on the market.

Hey hey hey!!! How cool is that "Golden Allmine Ermine RC3"??? Suddenly I have 2.3gb of app storage (in place of the anemic 320mb I had before), that's EIGHT TIMES the app space I had before :)

So as not to lose the apps I already had installed, I copied my /data/app/ folder to the sdcard. Added the rc3 and gapps zip files to the root of my sdcard, and reflashed the PE.

It worked absolutely great! Can't find a thing that's not working yet. Am in the process of re-installing (from my /extsdcard/data/app/ folder, see above) the apps I want and skipping those that weren't so good after all!!

Also, the Android Market is offering to re-install about 30 apps, a few of them I want, the rest were those apps I tried out and didn't want to keep. So is there a way to remove apps from the "MyApps" list on the Market?

Thanks again for everything

Anyone else come across the issue of the shrinking keyboard?

As per the beginning of the thread, I added the following lines:

wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 90
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=60
ro.sf.lcd_density=120

I like all of the changes, especially the resolution. However, the keyboard apparently thinks the screen is the old size still and only fills in 3/4ths of the width of the screen.

Anyone else have this problem? I've confirmed that remming out the density line and rebooting changes the resolution back and the keyboard is full again.

Anyone know how to tell the keyboard that the resolution is bigger?

Thanks!

Hi, as I posted in another thread (before reading this one), I have an allmine installation on my pocket edge and for some reason I can't get the home button to work.
I'm not sure why does this happen.
Also, is there a way to auto-execute a script in the sd-card or something like that?
I have the library on the internal memory and sometimes I want to open documents with the Documents to Go app, but since the library folder is hidden (resides in a .folder) I can't access it from the documents app.
I managed to mount the library into another folder where the Documents to Go can access the files, but I need to rerun the mount command everytime I reboot the reader.
My idea is to somehow do it at startup.

Also, is there any screenshot comparing the default pe lcd resolution against the one specified in the build.props to see if there is any noticeable improvement?

Thank you!

I'm not sure why you're having that problem (might be hardware), but you may want to look into a software key replacement application, like Softkeys. (I haven't tried it on the eDGe, to be honest.)

Possible blue smoke and/or WSoD are the first things that come to mind.

The PE was built to the minimum specifications with components that work as long as you don't go beyond the basic specifications. Many of the people that tried video acceleration ended up wit a WSoD and a useless unit.

Almost all the tales of woe in this forum are because someone tried to push the specs and the unit gave up.

If you want something with go-fast stripes then you need a different device, not a PE.

it's simply a memory manager program, it changes the OOM settings and the Min Free settings for the device to make it run a bit smoother...

in laymans terms it is basically an auto task killer...but it makes Android do it by itself rather than installing a program to do so....

and it also free's up extra RAM..

so yeah...anyone who HAS used V6 supercharger?....

just got my full sized edge yesterday and i am loving it :)

now i want to update it , but i am afraid that i will lose some of the features already found in dingo

what i am really concerned about :

5. E-ink PDF Annotation - Limited underlining capabilities in portrait mode, doesn't work in landscape mode.

can someone explain what "limited" means (the things that i wont be able to do after the update)

also

5. Limited options for dumping items from the LCD to the e-ink side.
(again how it is limited)

i know i can easily downgrade to dingo if i didnt like this upgrade , but i am just afraid that something happens to the tablet during the process

I'm glad that you are happy with your EE.

A word of warning, if you do update it make sure you get the update file for the EE NOT the ones for the PE - check before downloading and check after downloading.

I have never had any problems with marking a PDF on the e-ink screen be it lines, squiggles or anything else. Can't comment on landscape mode, I've only used it once in all the time I've had my EE.

I think the answer to your second concern is along the lines of, it depends what you want to move from the LCD to e-ink. I tend to use the built in facility in the default browser to dump information from the net to e-ink.

I do know that I've not lost functions of the e-ink by upgrading to the standard Ermine for EE. We have lost the ability to take still pictures though - they are distorted green images, the video does work without problems.

I will let someone that has updated to version with the market on it comment on that as I am not interested in accessing the market so haven't tried that update.

An alternative method that works great for the PE is using Go Launcher EX. This fits widgets amazingly on your tablet screen using the screen space as opposed to Launcher PRO, which I have not had a good experience with on the PE (EE was fine).

Once you have obtained GO Launcher you'll want to get goscreenlock, an amazing add-on for Go Launcher. (you won't be able to get this using the Google-Play store). Bingo, pattern lock security for your PE!

Thanks! I'm going to give this a shot. I briefly thought about using Go Launcher on my PE but something shiny caught my attention and I never thought about it again. Having pattern locking will be amazing.
