Getting Started

Entourage is out of business so you will not be able to register the eDGe. Not to fear because you will still be able to have full use of your device. You will need to bypass the Setup Procedure and manually setup your device including Wi-Fi, Date/Time, and Tablet and Reader Calibration.

How To Bypass The Setup Procedure:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjbZP8ckmKI

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=76698&d=1316487782

Setup Wi-Fi:

See the PDF attachment at the bottom of this post.

If you are using free public wireless (Wi-Fi) in a location such as an airport or coffee shop you may need to open the Browser and accept the terms of use for the free Wi-Fi connection. Any application that requires an Internet connection could be affected by this situation.

Note: The eDGe will work with a Mobile Hotspot. After you become more familiar with the eDGe see these threads for more information:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145835

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150599 (pay attention to post # 27)

Set the Date and Time:

1. Select Settings.
2. Select Date and Time.
3. Press Select time zone.
4. Scroll through the time zones listed and select your time zone. Time zones are listed in order by their relationship to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Note: The eDGe used to synchronize its time with the Entourage servers. Once you become more familiar with the eDGe, I recommend you scroll down to System Utilities in this thread and download the Clocksync App which will help you correct for time drift which will occur over time.

Calibrate the Tablet Screen:

1. Select Settings.
2. Select Display.
3. Select Tablet Screen Calibrator.

Calibrate the Reader Screen:

1. Select Settings.
2. Select Display.
3. Select Reader Screen Calibrator.

Note: When calibrating the reader screen, it is best to touch the calibration points with the stylus exactly as you would write with it instead of a 90 degree angle as this will make writing in the Journal App more accurate.

Setup E-mail

Attached at the bottom of this post are procedures for setting up e-mail automatically and manually for many popular providers. Try the automatic setup first. Some providers like Yahoo have to be setup manually.

How To Update Or Replace The eDGe Android Operating System

Read this entire section before proceeding with an Operating System Update or Replacement.

Badger, Coyote, and Dingo are Entourage custom builds of Android Operating System 1.6.

Ermine is an Entourage custom build of Android Operating System 2.2 (Froyo).

A lot of people confuse updating and rooting. These are two different things. Rooting allows privileged access to parts of the Android OS that are off access to the average user. While rooting is not difficult, access to the root can cause severe damage to your eDGe if you don't know what you are doing. Advanced users often use root access to customize the Android OS and add features left out by the manufacturer. Updating your eDGe's Operating System is not the same as rooting.

Tips For Overcoming Installation Problems

The key to successfully updating your eDGe's Operating System requires planning and preparation. Hundreds of owners have successfully updated their eDGe with little or no problems. Others are content with the original Operating System.

- Make sure your eDGe is plugged in !!!

- The Full Operating System or Update file MUST be renamed to update.zip in order for the procedure to work. By default Windows will add the zip extension so make sure the file is NOT update.zip.zip like post # 3 in this thread: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146299

- Make sure the update.zip file is in the root of the USB drive or SD card and NOT in a folder.

- Make sure you have ONLY either a USB drive or an SD card installed in the eDGe, NOT both. I prefer a USB drive with an indicator light because I can see it start flashing which lets me know the update is being processed and going to be installed.

- Hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons, power on the eDGe, count to 10 and release the buttons. After the Three Dot boot up sequence you should see the Updating Software message. Be PATIENT as the Updating Software screen will NOT pop up immediately after releasing the MENU and ROTATE buttons.

- If you need to revert to Dingo you will need to do the procedure TWICE. The first time you run the procedure the eDGe will appear to hang up. This is NORMAL. After approximately 30 minutes, use a paperclip to Reset the eDGe which will power it down. Leave either the USB drive or SD card with the update.zip file and perform the MENU and ROTATE power on procedure again. Again, hold the MENU and ROTATE and count to 10 and release. The second time you do the procedure you should get the Three Dot boot up sequence and the Updating Software screen followed by a reboot and the Dingo OS.

READ AND HEED

* While the chance of problems is minimal, update at your own risk.
* Download the CORRECT file for the Full Size eDGe or Pocket eDGe.
* These are two different files and are NOT interchangeable.
* USING THE WRONG FILE WILL DAMAGE YOUR EDGE!!!

If you encounter serious problems and brick your EDGe there are some tips which may help you recover and can be found in this post.

How To Update Your eDGe From Android 1.6 (Dingo) to Android 2.2 (Ermine)

Entourage released the Android 2.2 Ermine update as a Beta only. The Beta is fairly polished for the Pocket eDGe and has minor issues on some full size eDGe. Most owners, including myself, will tell you it is worth doing. I own 2 PEs and and an EE and all three have the Ermine update.

On the PE the update is practically flawless. Be aware some PE owners have reported a White Screen of Death (WSOD) which THEY have associated with updating:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144528

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150231

However, there's no concrete evidence to fully support this claim and it may be more of a hardware issue:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142249

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153321

On some EEs (not all) the update can cause hibernation (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134248), camera (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137827), and browser crashing issues (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135518).

If you upgrade an EE, I highly recommend you download and use the Opera Mini browser for everyday use. I use Opera Mini exclusively on my EE and it has NEVER crashed.

Checkout these threads if your EE exhibits hibernation problems:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138041

http://www.ratshome.net/android/poweredge.html

Unfortunately, there is no known work around for the camera problem exhibited by the EE when updated to Ermine.

Download the CORRECT update for the eDGe or Pocket eDGe. These are two different files and are NOT interchangeable. USING THE WRONG FILE WILL DAMAGE YOUR EDGE!!! I highly recommend you download the update via a PC. The update is a large file and will take a little time to download.

OR

There is a user-modded Ermine update by pablob that contains several enhancements over the Entourage Ermine update (e.g. More App Storage, Google Play). *** It is for the Pocket Edge ONLY. *** It does NOT require a rooted PE:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159872

*** The Ermine Update Instructions are attached below. The hyperlinks are invalid. Hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons, turn on the eDGe, count to 10 and release the buttons. Be PATIENT as the Updating Software screen will NOT pop up immediately after releasing the MENU and ROTATE buttons. After the Three Dot boot up sequence you should get an Updating Software screen followed by a reboot. To start using your eDGe after the update is installed, press and hold the Lock icon and drag it to the opposite side of the screen ***

How To Replace The Full Size eDGe Badger or Coyote Operating System with Dingo

OR

Revert From Ermine Back to Dingo

The procedure for replacing an older OS with Dingo or reverting from Ermine to Dingo is the same. If you replace the Badger or Coyote Operating System with Dingo you may need to re-perform the Setup procedures detailed above because all user data and configurations may be lost. Back up all critical data before proceeding.

If you do not like Ermine or you have a problem during the upgrade process you can revert back to Dingo. If you replace the Ermine Operating System with Dingo you may need to re-perform the Setup procedures detailed above because all user data and configurations may be lost. Back up all critical data if possible before proceeding. Interesting enough, when I restored my PE back to Dingo I did not have to re-register it. The only thing that popped up was the Reader Calibration.

To install Dingo you will need to do the procedure TWICE. Hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons, power on the eDGe, count to 10 and release the buttons. After the Three Dot boot up sequence you should see the Updating Software message. Be PATIENT as the Updating Software screen will NOT pop up immediately after releasing the MENU and ROTATE buttons. The first time you do the procedure the eDGe will appear to hang up. This is NORMAL. After approximately 30 minutes, use a paperclip to Reset the eDGe which will power it down. Leave either the USB drive or SD card with the update.zip file and perform the MENU and ROTATE power on procedure again. Again, hold the MENU and ROTATE and count to 10 and release the buttons. The second time you do the procedure you should get the Three Dot boot up sequence and the Updating Software screen followed by a reboot and the Dingo OS. The official Entourage instructions (Revert from Ermine Back to Dingo) are attached as a PDF file at the bottom of this post.

Make sure you download the CORRECT file for either the eDGe or Pocket eDGe. These are two different files and are NOT interchangeable. USING THE WRONG FILE WILL DAMAGE YOUR EDGE!!! I highly recommend you download the update via a PC. The update is a large file and will take a little time to download.

Tips for Recovering a Bricked eDGe

Try re-installing the CORRECT Operating System Update first. In post # 12 of this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170511) an eDGe owner was able to recover their Pocket Edge with the Dingo Update. Make sure you use the CORRECT update. If you have Dingo installed, use the Dingo update. If you updated to Ermine, try re-installing the Ermine update.

OR

The best method is to install the Full Dingo OS and upgrade to Ermine. Download the CORRECT Golden Dingo Operating System for the EE or PE. Installing the incorrect file will only lead to bigger problems. Follow the directions above on reverting back from Ermine to Dingo. You will need to do the update procedure TWICE. The first time the eDGe will appear to hang up. The second time you do the procedure should get the Three Dot boot up sequence and the Updating Software screen followed by a reboot and the Dingo OS.

If you are attempting to restore your eDGe with the Full Golden Dingo Operating System and it just doesn't seem to want to work after a reasonable effort, the recovery installer might be the source of the problem. See post # 2 of this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143035) and download either the modified EE or PE version (make sure it is the CORRECT version) and try it again. Carefully read the very first post, especially step # 4. I suggest you read the entire thread. Several owners were able to recover their eDGe using darkgue's solution along with emusan's modified Golden Dingo file.

OR

If you own a Pocket Edge another option is to follow the directions in post # 11 of this thread:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162905.

Also, check out post # 15 in the same thread where another owner was able to recover their Pocket eDGe using the same procedure. Unfortunately, this procedure will result in the loss of all personal data and you will have to you will need to re-perform the Setup procedures detailed above.

OR

If you failed to heed all the warnings in this post and think you may have installed an INCORRECT file (e.g. used a Pocket eDGe update on a Full Size eDGe) look for a reverse / mirror Entourage image upon boot up (see posts # 1, # 7, # 9, and # 10 of this thread:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148857

Another thread which shows the damage of using the wrong file:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154656

Unfortunately, Entourage did not provide a recovery partition on the eDGe. The procedure to recover from using the wrong update file involves making a serial cable (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145540&page=7 - post # 94)

AND

following the directions in post # 88 in the same thread: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1781507#post1781507

AND

take a look at post # 62 in the same thread: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145540&page=5

Basically you use the USB to DB-9 cable from your PC, plug one end of the DB-9 to DB-9 cable into the DB-9 end of the USB cable, and chop off the other end and mate it to the 3 pin header cable which will plug into the eDGe's service port.

Cable Wiring:

DB9 Pin 2 (RX) --> Header Pin 1 (TX)
DB9 Pin 5 (Gnd) --> Header Pin 2 (Gnd)
DB9 Pin 3 (TX) --> Header Pin 3 (RX)

If you identify and label the wires on pins 2, 3, and 5 beforehand on the DB-9 / DB-9 cable (buy one without a molded shell or a cheap plastic shell which can be easily broken if possible) you can just twist and tape those wires to the wires on pins 1, 2, and 3 of the header cable and eliminate the need for soldering.

OR

If you or someone else can open the DB-9 end of the USB / DB-9 cable and carefully identify and label the wires attached to pins 2, 3, and 5 of the DB-9 connector, you can wire those directly to the header cable wires and eliminate the DB-9 to DB-9 cable.

OR

You may be able to cut and separate the male pins on a prefabricated 3-pin header cable like this one (http://www.amazon.com/3-pin-Female-Male-Shielded-Extension-Wire/dp/B005TX3JWE) and plug these into pins 2, 3, and 5 of a DB-9 to USB cable ([http://www.amazon.com/RS-232-DB-9-Cable-RS232-SERIAL/dp/B00404P07A/ref=sr_1_27?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1330545311&sr=1-27) with a DB-9 gender changer (http://www.amazon.com/Your-Cable-Store-Coupler-Shipping/dp/B002HYDLIU/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1330536119&sr=1-15) and eliminate the need for soldering and the DB-9 to DB-9 cable. Notice on the gender changer the pins are clearly numbered.

Good luck and hopefully you will recover your eDGe!

If you are unable to recover it you may be able to recoup some of the cost of your purchase by selling your bricked eDGe on the MobileRead Flea Market. With Entourage out of business, parts (e.g. Battery, Stylus etc.) for the eDGe and Pocket eDGe are at a premium:

Troubleshooting Other Issues Not Associated With Operating System Update or Installation

Sometimes the solutions to difficult problems are often the simplest ones we overlook.

Many problems can be solved by simply turning the eDGe off and turning it back on:

Skins

Decal Girl has cool skins for the PE and EE:

http://www.decalgirl.com/shop/TabletsReaders/enTourage

I personally have Decal Girl skins on two Pocket Edges and a full size Edge. They are easy to apply and the matte finish virtually eliminates fingerprints. The matte finish is $5 extra but well worth the price.

Stylus

The stylus that comes with the eDGe and Pocket eDGe are pretty good but, if you are going to do a lot of writing using the Journal App you might want to consider a better Wacom Penabled Pen like the Motion Computing LE1600 & LS800 Series.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Motion+Digitizer+Pen+-+Digital+pen&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=5718770865076164481&sa=X&ei=brS7TtLUO-Tv0gGjtt3fCQ&ved=0CIQBEPMCMAQ

Replacement Stylus close to OEM: http://www.amazon.com/Penabled-Tablet-Pc-Slim-Pen/dp/B000085BD9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1305056043&sr=8-1

SD Card

The EE and PE support up to a 32GB SDHC or micro-SDHC card. I recommend you continue to use internal storage as long as possible because when you move your library to the external SD card you lose the use of the 3GB internal SD storage. I use the external SD card for backing up my library and storing less frequently accessed information (e.g. PDFs, downloaded programs etc.). Instructions for moving your library to SD card are attached below.

Screen Protector

You will definitely want to consider a Screen Protector because over time and repeated use the stylus tends to scratch the screens.

Here is an excellent thread on screen protectors: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141507

Tips & Tricks

- Press and hold the ROTATE button to bring up eDGe Options (e.g. Silent Mode, Power Off etc.)

- Press and hold the HOME button to bring up a list of Recent Apps used and quickly access and cycle through those Apps. If you use the HOME button from an open App it's similar to minimizing the App.

- To add shortcuts to any of the 5 App screens press MENU, Add (+), and Shortcuts. From here you can place shortcuts to webpages etc.

Transfer files from PC to eDGe using wireless:

1) Enable Network Discovery, File Sharing, and Media Sharing on your PC (Windows Vista / 7 / 8: Control Panel --> Network and Internet --> Network and Sharing Center.

Network Discovery: On

File Sharing: On

Public Folder Sharing: On (Read Only)

Password Protected Sharing: Off

Once this is done, create a Shared Folder on your PC using Windows Explorer (e.g. Edge Apps). To share the Folder right click the created Folder and select Share. You can choose to share this with Everyone or just select users. If your PC has a Firewall or Internet Security Suite you need to make sure it is not blocking access to the Shared Folder.

2) Settings --> Applications --> Check Allow Installation from Unknown Source

3) Download ES File Explorer: http://www.1mobile.com/es-file-explorer-70957.html

4) Install and Open ES File Explorer

5) Press the Menu button and select Show Tabs

6) Select LAN

7) Press the Menu Button and select New and Scan

8) All PCs on the LAN should pop up. Once the PC (s) appear press the back arrow to end the scan. Select the appropriate PC and enter Password as needed and then download files from shared folder on PC to Edge. Much easier than using USB cable.

9) Long press (press and hold) the file you want to copy and select Copy, or you can use multi-select to copy multiple files. Press the little icon in the right hand corner and another set of icons will appear. Press the one with the plus sign to select multiple files. Once all files are selected LONG press (press and hold) one file and Copy.

10) Select Local and the Folder where you want to copy the file to. You can use an existing folder create a New Folder using the Menu button.

11) Use the Swipe Bar at the Bottom of the Screen and long press the File and select Paste or Paste All.

Note: If the file is an App the eDGe will automatically download and install it without having to Copy and Paste.

There is an App which allows you to do the same thing using a web browser on your PC connected to your wireless network:

WiFi File Explorer: http://www.amazon.com/Dooblou-WiFi-File-Explorer-PRO/dp/B004OZOTSQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391280828&sr=8-2&keywords=wifi+file+explorer

Note: You have to Exit the App once you are done using it otherwise it could interfere with screen saving etc. (MENU --> Exit). More specifically from the App description: PowerManager WakeLocks to keep processor from sleeping or screen from dimming.

************************************************** *****************

There are plenty of Android Apps on the Internet. Most are either very low cost or FREE (my favorite kind). This is just a small sample of Apps which will work on the eDGe. All of these Apps will work with Ermine (Android 2.2), and almost ALL of them are FREE with a few exceptions. Some of these Apps may not work with Badger, Coyote, or Dingo (Android 1.6). For those running an older Android Operating System, Freeware Lovers is an excellent source for older versions of many popular Apps. If you run across an interesting App feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to add it to the list.

A quick note about downloading Apps. Some Apps will download and install automatically. On some websites like Freeware Lovers you may have to press the "Click Here" to download the App and then use the pull-down Notification swipe bar on the top of the tablet to display the App. Press the App and it will launch the installation.

Important: On the eDGe select Settings --> Applications --> Check Unknown Sources to allow installation of non-Market applications.

App Stores With Store / Market App

If your eDGe is running original Android 1.6 or Android 2.2, or even if your device is running the pablob or Allmine update with Google Market access, you will definitely want to take a look at some alternative App stores. These are among the best and they have a Market or Store App which can be installed on the eDGe and is HIGHLY recommended because it makes downloading, installing, and updating Apps a breeze. Many of these sites (e.g. 1Mobile, Panda App, Android Community, Freeware Lovers, SlideMe) allow you to browse and download Apps via a PC and then you can transfer them via wireless to your eDGe as described above.

Digital Rights Management

Many electronic books use Digital Rights Management (DRM) to enforce copyright restrictions. Free eBooks do not use DRM. If you plan to purchase books you will want to authorize DRM on your eDGe so you can fully enjoy those books.

Download and Install Adobe Digital Editions, Setup an Account, and Authorize to Your Computer:

http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

1. Connect the eDGe to a PC, MAC, or Linux-based PC using the mini-USB cable.

Ermine Users will receive a USB Connected Screen. Turn on USB Storage and proceed to Step 5.

Dingo Users (MOST new owners) proceed as follows:

2. Once connected to the PC, a USB icon appears in the notification bar at the top of the tablet.

3. Press and hold the notification bar at the top of the LCD screen and drag it down.

4. Select the USB connected message, then select Mount.

5. Your computer should now recognize the eDGe as a drive.

*** Once your eDGe is properly mounted to your PC, open Adobe Digital Editions and it will automatically detect the eDGe and offers to authorize it with your Adobe ID. ***

6. Turn Off USB Storage or pull down the notification bar and select Turn Off USB storage. Disconnect the mini-USB cable.

To add a DRM e-book from Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to your Library:

Note: Your PC must have ADE installed and authorized to your computer, and DRM must be enabled on your eDGe before attempting this procedure.

1. Purchase and download a book to ADE from a retailer that uses DRM (e.g. Google, Kobo).

2. Connect the eDGe to your PC using the above procedure.

3. In ADE select the book and drag it to the enTourage eDGe.

4. Turn Off USB Storage or pull down the notification bar and select Turn off USB storage.

5. Disconnect the mini-USB cable.

6. Open the Library App. Using the Library drop down menu in the upper left corner, select Storage--> Internal Storage or SDCard--> Digital Editions.

7. Locate the book in the Digital Editions folder then press and hold the book and select Add to Library.

Two of my favorite apps:
Springpad - keeps my notes, to-do lists, etc. synced between my EE, PE, and PC and even has an offline mode for Chrome. http://www.springpadit.com

Syncness - allows you to sync to a NAS (or PC) so I have folders set up on my NAS that I want to appear on both my PE and EE and it keeps them in sync. Available from Amazon's app store.

Here is an awesome site. Best to download the Apps using your PC and then transfer to your EE or PE. http://www.handango.com/catalog/Soft...oductType=free

Were you able to register with Handango? I used to use Handango on my Blackberry but they don't have Entourage to be able to register with them for Android.

I was able to buy from Handango. I had an account from an old PDA. They don't show the eDGe, and it took some fiddling, but I got them to accept me as an Android (generic) user. Haven't visited them for a while. I'll go see if it still works. :)

Yup! Just click "Android" on the top left and you don't have to choose a device.

Absolutely not. There is plenty of good information to be found. I just scratched the surface. I wanted to consolidate and share some of the best information I found while setting up my own PE so that new users wouldn't need to spend less time searching and more time doing.

I'll have to check those two Apps out, thanks for sharing. I haven't tried to sign up for an account with Handango as I mainly looked at their free Apps and download via PC, but I might give Filark's method a try.

Thanks, I was able to get a functioning Kobo and Aldiko reader apps from one of those links. Now the Amazon Appstore is offering to Upgrade both of them, presumably to the same versions I downloaded before, but that would not install. I think I'll wait before attempting that, at least with Kobo since it is a pretty recent version.

This is fun. Wonder if I'll ever use the eink screen for anything. ;)

Well, I went ahead and told AmAppS to Update Aldiko. It detected that it didn't come from AAS (good), helpfully offered to remove the old version (good), which it did (good), but again the install failed (bad). Wish I knew how to determine the cause of install failure. In the meantime I'll go get Aldiko again...

On Amazon you are allowed 5 gigs of free space if you have an account with them...which is free, too. It's called Amazon Cloud. From my pocket edge I can go to my amazon acct. open my cloud drive and acces up to 5 gigs of files, photos, movies, or audio...and don't need a bulky flash drive to do it. By the way I am running ermine.

Hi, am a newbie. don't even have my Pocket Edge yet, but also discover that I won't be able to get an Amazon or Google Account :( because I'm Canadian. And now the Entourage Store is closing! (wondering if I made the right choice in getting this gizmo, but it looks so neat!) Does this mean I won't be able to get Amazon Apps Store either? Where will I be able to find apps and books please? Also, can anyone tell me if the version I'll be getting is Dingo? The version I purchased says its an Android 2.1 but havent' seen this listed in any of the forums on Entourage (can't log in there to ask there) thanks in advance for any help (can you tell I'm anxious? lol)

Hi Tinah! Welcome! :D

I think you'll like your Pocket eDGe, even though you may have to hunt around for apps a little bit more than those of us who can register for Amazon (are you sure you can't?). I found it a little bit hard to learn because I was new to Android, too. But if you stick with it (we'll help, here and at http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/forum.php), I think you'll agree it really is a neat gizmo! ;)

You should receive Dingo (1.6) and will be able to upgrade, if you choose, to Ermine (2.2). I have no idea where your seller got 2.1 -- maybe a typo??

Good luck, have fun, let us know how it goes! :)

Thank you Filark. I will keep in touch, now that I found this forum. While I can access the Entourage Forum for reading just like other Newbies, I cannot leave a comment there, so came here.
The PE I'm getting is listed as an Android 2.1. I'm also seeing these on Ebay. I see others on Ebay listed as 1.6 Dingo, but must be a different Version. I guess I'll see when I get it and let you know.
Having read all about Ermine, I'd want that upgrade, even if Beta as I'd like some of the better functionality of speed and possibility to run Flash instead of just Flash lite. Having read about Hibernation problems though am a bit worried about the WSOD and wondering if that only happens if one doesn't push the menu button to go into manual hibernation first? Do you know if one can make a back up of ones current version? before upgrading? so one doesn't need to use the Golden Dingo downgrade if the Ermine version should fail? not sure I found any info on that in the Entourage Forum (my eyes are bleary from all the mental download, lol).

The only thing I'll try to answer is the hibernation question. :)

I have had no issues (yet) with hibernation and I love what it does for battery life! I have not used the manual hibernation mode. I just close my PE, and when I open it again it says I'm in hibernation and to hit the menu button to come out of it. Very easy. My PE lasts all night unplugged with very little power loss, whereas with Dingo I would have very little power left in the morning!

WSOD I think happens to some unlucky people, no one knows why (except it occurs on other devices as well). Just keep your fingers crossed . . . ;)

I've also noticed a quick battery drain on the EE with Dingo, even in sleep mode. Now I'm thinking of perhaps getting a HTC Flyer (despite the lack of an e-ink screen) but I'll think I wait for some real user reviews to come out first.

If you haven't seen it before the Miren web browser is really nice. has a true full screen mode if you turn "tabs always displayed" which I like a lot. I tried Dolphin and found it OK. Miren seems quicker and a little less prone to jamming up for a while on my PE.

Hi Batman! :)

lol! I did finally topple over the eDGe, hehe! ;)

No one thing decided me. I had read enough to believe I could do the upgrade and, if I had to, do the downgrade too. Then I had to get over my laziness in doing a backup, which I finally did. Took me a while to figure out how to back up my apps, but I finally did that, too. I had spent enough time with my PE by then that I felt I knew it well enough to mess with its innards, so to speak. So one day, with a print-out of Obsessed's post beside me, I just went ahead and did it!! :p

I have occasional glitches and stalls, have had to turn the power off then on again (reboot) 2 or 3 times, but it runs no worse (in my opinion) than my Windows machines -- maybe better!

Time. Enough of it passing. That's what really convinced me.

Make sure you download the Dingo update just in case something goes wrong or you don't like Ermine. My guess is you'll like it. I have it on three devices (2 PEs and an EE) and I couldn't be happier. For the PE, Ermine is highly polished and very stable.

A tip that may be of interest to newcomers.

Make a directory/folder on your computer and put a copy of all the APKs that work in it, that way you will always know where to find them. In fact it would be a good idea to download them to the computer first.

I have ninety odd stored on our server plus quite a few older versions so that if a newer version fails to work I can always go back to the older working version.

Overdrive Media Console sounds interesting. How is it better than just playing audiobooks using the media player?

Has anyone found a text-to-speech facility? I know that was covered in another thread, but it seems to apply here.

I think the main draw of the media console is that many libraries offer ebooks and audiobooks for free for rent. The console lets you open these files without connecting to a pc first and opening them there(necessary due to drm, though I'm not sure what kind of drm their audiobooks use and whether you can ever open them in the media player on the edge).

Last_of_the_PEs

I was asking because I like to listen to audiobooks ripped to .MP3 format, but the usual media players don't keep track of what chapter/file you left off on, and want to "shuffle" every .mp3 on your device together, even the books, which is pretty irritating when you only want to hear music.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I downloaded a couple of audiobooks from my school library using Overdrive Media and they can be seen in the Overdive folder using ES File Explorer. They show up as .mp3. In fact, when I touched one of the files it opened up in the Edge's default audio player. Not sure if this is not just an exception rather than the rule. My guess is any audio delivered with DRM is probably a .wav file.

Glad to hear you got Overdrive working. As far as program installs go, some programs will not install because the Edge does not support install to an SD card. Even the internal memory is treated as an SD card. The problem with the installation has nothing to do with the eDGe's capabilities but is related to the sdcard problem. Many programs will try to automatically install to the sdcard, but it can't which is why you will often see App failed to install. There are workarounds that can be found on this forum but they involve rooting the Edge.

Your welcome. Unfortunately, Entourage decided to call it quits with the Edge. However, in some ways this may be good news for consumers who can now pick one either the full size Edge or Pocket Edge at a bargain price. The users on this forum are incredibly helpful when it comes to any questions you may have. Plus, Entourage still has the Support pages up on their website and they are very useful (http://www.entourageedge.com/support/).

It's strange that I was able to load Angry Bird Seasons on my PE but it won't load on my daughters. I don't care for it personally, no need to play the game! Angry Birds did install on hers and I was able to use the info from her to turn off the background so it will play well for her. She has enough to keep her busy without another version of the game, but she doesn't think so. Maybe I'll explore the rooting process later. Thanks for all the info!

I have just found this forum and thank all of you for the information you have assembled here. I have a PE running Dingo and have just downloaded the ermine upgrade. My PE yesterday decided to stop running applications. First the email app reported that the process stopped, them I noticed that I did not have a Wifi connection. When I tried to restart the Wifi, the PE told me it cuouldn't scan any more. I will let you know how the update works out.

You can register your PE under Settings - eDGe Settings - Register This Entourage Device. However, based on what you said in your previous post, it sounds like your update to Ermine was no good. You may want to try and re-install the Ermine update first.

https://www.entourageedge.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=265

I few new owners have reported being able to register their devices so you may want to give it another shot after you have a stable Ermine install.

Just got my edge...bought it from woot. Tried to regisgter. I'm stuck on the registration page, after setting up the wifi, and the reader side says "initializing..." and the tablet side seems to be stuck...won't do anything after I partially entered the data. This is my second attempt at registering. The first gave me a failure to connect (I think)...so I tried again. I shut down the device & restated it...now it seems frozen. Won't let me shut it down or complete the registration data.
So now what? Anyone able to provide some assitance? Thanks...

Hi dthurm! Welcome to MobileRead! :D

It looks like the entourage website is down right now. It will probably be back later. You can try www.entourageedge.com to see. If the site is up and you still casn't register, check the Knowledge Base section on that site for instructions on what to do if you're stuck registering.

Good luck!! :)

Subject: USB update to ermine on new Pocket eDGe

First post to forum and I hope it ends up in the right place.

I tried at least five times to update to Ermine, reverted from Ermine (Froyo) back to Dingo, and tried again.

Everytime I ended up with a Blue eDGe screen with the time in a large font at the top and two "buttons" at the bottom...an open lock on one side and speaker volume on the other. Pressing keys and tapping the screen did nothing.

FINALLY, I just happened to drag the unlock button to the right and a miracle happened. The blasted screen unlocked and there was my new "desktop".

As you may realize, Android is completely foreign to me but I am a whiz with Windows XP.

I am posting this in case someone else is baffled like I was.

I got an email from my oldest son who explained that Android is basically a smart phone OS and explained why I had to unlock the screen. He also explained Airplane Mode. Since I don't run around like half the population with a phone in my ear this was all new to me.

Has anyone found a workaround for the White-Screen-of-Death problem? My Woot! PE was out of the box for less than 24 hours, I did a USB update to Ermine, had a great time with it for a few hours, then tried to wake it from Hibernation. The tablet is permawhite now. I tried to downgrade back to Dingo, and I think it downgraded, but it's still WSoD. I didn't even have a chance to enable the USB debugging feature, which may have helped.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Unfortunately this has happened to a couple of other owners. However, I believe it has more to do with the PE than the Ermine upgrade. You may want to contact Woot and see if they will replace it.

I have tried to install the Ermine update 3 times. Each time my PE seems to look at the USB but ends up only starting up in Dingo. I have made sure thet the file is the only file on the root of the USB and has been named updaste.zip.
Holding the menu and rotate keys while turning on and continuing to hold the keys for 30 seconds. Still no luck.

Any thoughts?

ivanjt
07-09-2011, 07:28 PM
Yes, I hope it was named update.zip and not updaste.zip that you list ;)

What size is the USN stick? What format? If using windows to copy to the USB stick and rename the file do you have show file extensions turned on? If not the file is most probably update.zip.zip which will not work.

westparker
07-11-2011, 02:29 PM
I had opened the zip file on my PC and saw that the file inside was
update.zip.out
I retrieved another version from a different thread and opened it and found several zip files among other things inside.
I placed this different version on my USB stick, started my PE and the update loaded just fine.
I am still indebted to the many helpful suggestions I have found on this forum in all of the threads. I will try to root this thing so I can get to the android market. Thanks to all of you for sharing your results (especially after the many trials you may have endured).

Welcome to the eDGe of MobileRead (don't fall off )! ;)

Have you been able to complete your registration? That Code 80 usually means the Adobe site is down, but I just checked and it seems to be running.

If you still can't register you can skip it for now. See this excellent post by Gunnerp245 for more info: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142101&highlight=register.

I already had an Adobe account, I had to get my password reset so I could use it to register. That's done...what do I do now? Do I need to update anything? What is Ermine(?) I keep seeing mentioned.

All I'm going to use this for (for now!) is reading journal articles on PDF for class. I've figured out how to download from my PC onto the PE and I have some files saved already.

Diopen in an input method or alternate keyboard, and as such will not "open". To use it, it has to be enabled (open settings, choose Language & keyboard, and press the checkmark beside diopen). Then you have to long press in an input field until an option picker pops up. Select input method, then select Diopen.

For anyone interested I first installed Eclipse and java, then the Android SDK and get the emulator created. Once through the required configuration settings, the rest was very smooth. (compile one of the Android samples and ran that through the emulator. once things worked through the emulator, found the apk and moved it to the edge via usb)
i found it in old posts .
about java it is required to be installed all the developing machine of java or only java engine? and about eclipse what version is required ?
have you any hint about the changing to be done at the standard android sdk to work with teh bif edge entourage display ?

Hi glorhee! :)

I think 5thWiggle means any input field in any app, or in the browser. Where you would put the curser and start typing, I think now you have to tap and hold in the box and you will have a choice of keyboard or diopen.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried this myself, just guessing based on the few things I do know! :p

Give it a try and see if it works! If you have the search box on your home screen you could probably try it there . . . let me know if I'm right (I so love being right!) ;)

Exactly! Give the lovely birdy...err...lady a prize! Easiest is to use NotePad (you've got the entire page and a way to try out Diopen). Start Notepad, hit the menu button, select Add Note. Long press anywhere on the page and a the Edit Text menu will pop up. Choose Input Method, then select DioPen.

Same method to switch back to Android Keyboard.

I used the directions, which worked really well, in "How to transfer files from PC to Edge using wireless" and I can see the file in my home computer on my PE. But how do I move the file into my downloads? on the PE. It must be something obvious but I don't get it.

Hi Richard! :)

It's only obvious once you know how to do it. :p

My method is to long press (or tap and hold) on the file I want to transfer. A menu will pop up. I then tap Copy, which puts a little up-arrow tab thingy at the bottom of the screen. Next I tap over to the Local tab at the top, find the download folder (or whatever folder you want to move the file to), pull up the tab at the bottom of the page, and tap on the icon of the file I am moving. If it works, a confirmation message will pop up.

I'm pretty sure you can do the copy and paste using the menu button as well, and you can copy several files before you start pasting.

Good luck! ;)

Thank you. After I read your directions and jumped right in to do it. After I understood what "the little up-arrow thingy at the bottom of the screen" was everything worked.

Hello, I do not know if this is the place to post this, if not, I am sorry.

I bought a EE on January of this year, and yesterday a friend of mine dropped a heavy frame on the e-ink side and it broke, it no longer writes anything, I have restarted the system a couple of times but it does not work. As far as I know the e-ink is very delicate and any hit would damage it seriously.
The biggest problem is that I do not have support in my country for it (Mexico), So what am writing for is to know if anyone can tell me how can I get a replacement for the screen in order to change it.

I hope you can help me and thanks

Luis, what a shame! :(

I don't know whether your screen can be replaced. I just checked ebay to see if there are any good deals now on another EE for you. Nothing great, although there are a few for sale. :) I saw, too, that someone else is selling an EE with a broken e-ink screen, so you could at least sell yours for parts if you can't get it fixed. Does the LCD side still work?

Anybody else know about fixing e-ink screens, or who to ask??

One way or another, I hope it works out for you, thaldric!

getting a replacement for the screen might be hard on the EE, unlike the PE I'm not sure if the EE screen was used in many other consumer electronics(except /maybe/ the kindle DX), the price of one of those screens could very well be about as much as a new EE... sorry, maybe someone else here will know more about them.

once you have one though replacing wouldn't be /too/ hard with some technical knowledge(hardest part would be opening the case).

First, welcome to MobileRead! :D

Following the setup directions that come with your new Pocket eDGe you will first connect to WiFi, if you have it. Then register (you will need an Adobe account which you can set up in advance if you don't have one already) and run the update, which might take a while or might be fast, depending on what version of the software your new baby comes with. Once you are as updated as the built-in updater will get you (you should have Dingo (Android 1.6)), I suggest you play around a bit and see what your PE can do! There will be plenty of time to upgrade to Ermine (Android 2.2) once you are comfortable with the unit. :)

That's my suggestion, others might suggest you go to Ermine right away, or even beyond! ;)

Good luck, and have fun!

I agree with Filark, use the PE for awhile to get used to how it works. You might find there is no need, depending on your use, to upgrade to 2.2.

But 'do' perform the official released upgrade from Dingo-1.6 to Dingo-1.13 using the 'update' function located in the "X" (entourage logo) menu.

Thanks Filark and Gunner! Will do! It said it comes with 1.6, so 1.13 is better?
I will set up Adobe now, as I don't think I have an account....I will mostly be using it to view youtube and websites for tutorials and maybe to make some when I get brave enough. But, oddly, the placement of the webcam has me wondering how well that will work. I can't wait to get that little thing and get it in my sewing room.
It will also prove helpful when wanting to draft my own ideas, as they come to mind. I have a small tablet now (paper), but this will be great!!

This may be old news for most, but pressing and holding Home causes a list of recently used programs to appear in the middle of the LCD screen, at least in Ermine. It doesn't persist through a reset or power cycle, so it's only for the current session (up-time).

This is the thread for voip calling. You can call (but not receive calls) using this app from and to anyone in the US or Canada

As for texting, I picked up textplus gold when it was free on Amazon app store. There is a free version there now (but there are probably features missing). The version I got worked pretty well except that when you receive texts the android unit does not make a notification noise nor any notification other than the text showing up on the app. All in all you can send and receive texts for free (unless you shell out the $3.00 for the app, then for $3.00).

Hello and welcome, Autoharp! :)

I have Vista on my laptop and no problem using the USB connection. If you haven't already you might want to read the guides posted here: http://entourageedge.com/support/. The eDGe doesn't sync like a cellphone does.

Are you trying to download epocrates directly from your Pocket eDGe browser?

Edit: I found the free version of epocrates here: Download Epocrates for Android (http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/epocrates). I didn't see how to download the latest version, but the 1.91 version might be better than nothing! :)

I've learned quite a few things. Thanks to everyone on this forum. I bought the pocket edge on Woot and was able to upgrade it to Ermine. I have been able to download some apps from amazon. I have already lost the stylus (GRRR). I saw that someone mentioned getting a wacom enabled pen? What is the advantage of this over a regular stylus? I mean, would it work with it as something other than just a stylus? Is it smoother, etc? If I am browsing the web and see a recipe (for example), how do I get it over to the e-ink side so I can make some notes or change it? I still haven't figured out how to get apps onto the SD card. Is anything being stored on the sd card? I was glad to read the bit about the plastic over the camera, Duh, that helped a lot! Overall, I like the device and am looking forward to figuring out what else it can do.

Hello and welcome, Grizzlemon! :)

The stylus has to be Wacom "penabled" to work on the e-ink side. Here are 2 threads that discuss what and where to buy: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145383, http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131217.

If you are using the native browser and find a page you want to see on the e-ink side, tap on the book icon on the top of the page (hit the Menu button if you don't see it). This will give you a choice of "epub" or "image" to port to the e-ink.

The eDGe is not designed for putting apps on the SD card, but some of the smart people here have figured out how to do it. :D Check this thread first: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138124.

On my PE I get an error message that says "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server -- this could be a temporary prolem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services.....". help?!
I'll keep reading this forum - it's very helpful!! Hope to try some of the suggested programs & apps once I figure things out a bit more! Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi Kathy! It all has something to do with the DRM on the ebook. There are ways around this though.

However you may have better luck and more responses by starting a new thread with your issues instead of just tacking your question to the end of an old, long sticky. Many more people are likely to click on a new thread than on here.

To add Barnes and Noble books to the Edge Library and read on the e-ink use the First and Last Name as it appears on the credit card used to purchase the book for the Username and Credit Card # for Password.

Thank you for the info and the site where I could down load the quick start guide. That is very helpful. I also have vista but I must have done something wrong. I was expecting it to load the edge like it did my Pocket PC. But now that I know it will load as a drive I think I can get it to work.

If you are using the USB cable you must enable USB on the eDGe otherwise the computer will not see it - don't forget to do the reverse when you have finished.

If you have WiFi you can also use the LAN section of ES File Explorer to transfer files in both directions.

Hey Obsessed, I've posted recently in the main Edge forums about Adhoc support for PE. I think it'd be a great mention for your Starter Resource for newcomers who will likely have this problem. If you wait for more public information for those who used it to confirm any compatibility problems, I understand. So far so good for me. Thank You

Sounds pretty cool. Let's see if other users have success with it first. I don't own a mobile phone (I know, my wife and son have one if I need it) but, I wonder if anyone has tested Proxoid for an Android phone (I don't have one yet) that makes the phone look like a proxy server. This would be ideal for new users because it wouldn't require rooting the Edge.

http://smarterware.org/4575/how-to-tether-your-android-phone

Tetherbot also looks pretty cool. I realize these programs are designed to be a proxy server for a PC but there is an HTTP proxy option under Edge Network Settings and it might work.

No Problem, I'm glad there are other options. Please post any resources you might want others to try under my Adhoc solution thread or create a new one. I'd love for these possibilities to get explored more thoroughly for confirmation.

I also updated my thread about adhoc quite a bit to ensure people are informed. I only offered it up bc I seem to have had a lot of plus's using the app compared to almost everyone else(android phone users).

The User manuals are available in both PDF and ePub; :bulb2:

Pocket Edge (PE) 7" - http://www.entourageedge.com/support...eUserGuide.pdf
Entourage Edge (EE) 10" - http://www.entourageedge.com/support...kbarticleid=80

Edit: Seems the entourage website is no longer active (times out); therefore attached are the user manuals for the PE and EE in epub format.

Hi Zazoo, and welcome!! :)

I don't know whether that stylus will work. It doesn't say "penabled" so it might not. If you can look up the Lenovo models it works with and determine whether they use the penabled Wacom styli you might have an answer. Not all Wacom instruments work, but pretty much all "penabled" Wacom styluses will work, as I understand it.

Good luck, and if you get it let us know!! ;)

I was hoping someone more knowledgeable than me, would know. I found a reference to that stylus in the old forums, here:

http://www.ethanphoenix.com/entourageedge/forums/showthread.php@59-Alternate-Wacom-Penabled-pens-that-work-with-the-eDGe%26p=7678%26viewfull=1.html

(BTW, These old forums are not the same ones found here in MobileRead, which seems to be missing a lot of original posts.)

Search for "lenovo" in that thread, you'll get this comment: "The pens for the Lenovo tablet computers are also "penabled" and work well. For some people, these may be easier to acquire than others."

No followup on that stylus, so I was kinda hoping to find some followup in current forums.

I'll skip this then, maybe someone else will have a solid answer pro or con, later on down the line.

Hey guys,
I originally purchased my PE from HSN, on 10/31/10. I also bought the 2yr service plan they offered.
As soon as Ermine was available I upgraded. And I really love my little PE. I use it for my business and all was well. I turned it off the other day, plugged it in to charge, went to bed. The next AM I unplugged it and turned it on. The best way I can describe it was it was as though the unit hic-up'd. All my contacts were gone and the calendar was wiped clean. The calendar was still there but when I tried to reload the appointments I 'ld get a message that the was no calendar. So I uninstalled the calendar and reinstalled...same message. I even tried to uninstall ermine and reinstall and still no luck. So I called HSN. Was given the number for the "LIFETIME SERVICE CENTER". I contacted them and ended up asking to speak to the tech that would be working on my PE. GUESS WHAT'! They put me on with him. I found out he's working on two other PE 's with the same issue. He tried to walk me through some steps and I had already done them myself. So he said it looked like it may be a mother board to send it in. He also said that if he had to change out the board he always upgrades to Ermine, and he ould change the serial number to the original so that the service contract would still be valid. Since entourage offered a year my actual HSN service contract had not even kicked in yet. But since Entourage went belly up they would cover that year. Translated on October 31, 2012 their contract will start. So, I actually got 3 years of service. If for some reson it cannot be fixed I get a refund of 100% ($400) of the original cost. FYI this tech said he thinks he's the only person working on these units in the US he sounded very knowledgeable. If it Can be fixed I think this guy will do it. This service center is in Williamville, New York. The name of the center is "Lifetime Service Center". I sent my PE out Wednesday 9/14/11. I'll keep y'all posted. But if you need a repair the help is available at this service center.
Wish me luck....

Slickbit, sorry your PE failed. But I think it's great that you can get it repaired, and that there is someone out there working on them, and apparently willing to swap out a motherboard! This could be good news for people who have suffered a White Screen of Death on their units!

Thanks for sharing, and do let us know the result! :)

Also, another forum user (DianNC) noted that if you use the Miren browser and go directly to the YouTube website the videos will play. I also was able to do this also using the xScope browser. Here are the links to download:

You can also use FREEdi YouTube Downloader free from Amazon (if you have Ermine installed and the Amazon App store installed) to download and play YouTube videos as an alternative.

Hey guys, new PE user here. I'm having trouble upgrading to 2.2. I downloaded the zip file, made sure it was named correctly, moved it onto a thumb drive (tried 5 or 6 different thumb drives), and followed your instructions here.

No matter how long I hold down "menu" and "rotate," though, I'm not getting an "Update software" screen. When I release them (after 2 minutes of holding them down), it boots up like normal and I'm still running 1.6.

Any advice?

Also, I'm wondering if I will be able to access Adobe DRM files without registering this through the now-defunct Entourage site. I know I can strip DRM, but I'd kinda hoped I wouldn't have to with this device.

Are you absolutely sure you have named it update.zip? If you are using windows without changing the default 'don't show extensions' and you renamed the file update.zip then you will have update.zip.zip on the USB stick. If that is the case just rename the file to update delete the one on the USB stick and recopy the file, then try again.
1. insert USB stick.
2. hold down buttons.
3. turn on power.
4. wait - it may take longer than you think.

I registered yesterday and wrote a short message that included my questions as well.
I probably did somthing wrong, because when I logged in today (with some difficulty, as it didn't recognize my username/password, so it was reset by sending me email with the temp password), it still tells me that I need to introduce myself. However, when I click on my user name it shows my message, but as a visitor. What should I do, to be recognized as a member? It's not really important, as long as I can read messages and participate, if needed.
I also want to thank you for very good instructions how to upgrade to Ermine 2.2.1. It worked perfect for me. Do you know why I cannot see videos on YouTube on my PE?

I can't speak for melodyandwords, but I followed the directions to a T, with the same results (I may be newb to the PE, but am quite techy). I held those dang buttons for 5mins without any luck. Is it possible the name of the thumb-drive (or even, possibly, SD card [which I've not tried]) may interfere?

I think I know what you are doing. The zip file that you download is not the one you rename. You need to unzip that file and extract one that is an update to the new version I forget the name. That is the file you rename to "update.zip".

OP:
To install the update:

1. Download the Ermine Update file for Edge or Pocket Edge. I highly recommend you download the update via a PC. The update is 144 MB and will take a little time to download.

Pocket Edge: http://dustyfeet.com/edge/p-update.zip.ermine-0.9.zip

OR

http://www.edge.ympsa.com/updatefact...09pocketPE.zip

Edge: http://dustyfeet.com/edge/e-update.zip.ermine-0.9.zip

OR

http://www.edge.ympsa.com/updatefact...fullsizeEE.zip

2. Rename the file: update.zip
_________________________
Nothing here mentions what you speak of, but I'm still open to suggestions. I renamed 'p-update.zip.ermine-0.9.zip' to 'update.zip' with prior attempts.

Here is what's in the archive:
boot.zip
data.zip
root.zip
system1.zip
system2.zip
tools.zip
update.sh

Also, I've found some users have had problems using USB up/g but success with micro-SD. I only have a micro-SD belonging to my EVO 4g and am reluctant to use this, so I can't really test the method. Possible someone can verify?

Thanks, in advance. Also, I've yet to thank OP for the awesome thread

Nice file. I gave it a whirl, and this time there was a tiny cursor blinking in the LCD top-right during load screen. I know it was reading my USB drive (same as last attempts) by an on-stick LED indicator. Alas, it doesn't work for me. I've tried holding the buttons for the recommended 10 seconds, 1min, and 2mins. Sometime these downloads can be a little fickle due to file size. Also, you may want to Quick format the thumb drive before copying the update.zip to it or even try another thumb drive or a SD card. The reason I say this is because I bought a brand new external SD card formatted FAT by default (which most USB drives and SD cards are) and when I put it into my full-size Edge it didn't recognize it. It gave me a Damaged SD Card Error and said You may have to reformat it. My computer recognized it with no problem and after I did a Quick Format my Edge recognized it too.

Below is a link to another Ermine Version that has been modded. The users that put this package together have gone to great lengths to provide all Edge owners with an alternative OS with some enhancements over the Entourage Ermine build. At first I thought this Mod required a rooted Edge but that is not the case. After reading the entire post many Edge owners have reported success with this Ermine Mod. I applaud their efforts and hope they will continue in their efforts which will greatly benefit the entire Edge community. Good luck and hopefully you can get your Edge upgraded.

I could tell you aren't :) I simply wanted to point out that others here have had luck renaming the file 'update' without adding the file extension since Windows will sometimes do that and then you end up with a file named .zip.zip.

I, on the other hand, am a newbie. I did manage to get Mark Rehorst's update installed on the first try and under 2 minutes

Similarly, my update didn't work until I reformatted my thumb drive to FAT32 (as it says to do in the instructions).

ARRRGH. I've been attempting the up/g with a FAT32 stick, have reformatted a few times, tried with FAT, a different USB stick (access confirmed), 3 different Ermine zips, and nada...

So, I went against my better judgment and used the micro-SD from my EVO 4G with the Ermine v1.02... :o

Disco! I'm in business and the SD card's integrity wasn't compromised at all. Thanks for all the support, guys. 'preciate it. Now I can get on with the fun stuff!

Welcome. Glad to hear the update worked. A lot of users say they are having problems. It is a fairly large file and even the slightest download glitch could be what is rendering it useless. For your YouTube problems I point you to this thread:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150306

Thank you for pointing me to the YouTube problems thread.
I also like to download to my PC first and then to my PE (via USB cable) I have 802.11n Wireless LAN card on my PC, but I don't know how to use it with my PE. I connect my PE via my router using WiFi. That's how I connect to the Internet and download ebooks directly to my PE.
About YouTube problems: what is the least painful and most reliable application to use to watch videos on YouTube (I can watch videos on Yahoo)?
I should probably post this question on the thread you pointed to, but I don't want to be on different threads, unless it is really necessary. :)

To transfer files using wireless from your PC to your PE you have to setup file sharing on your PC. If you are running a software based firewall on your PC you will also need to Share Network Resources or set the Trust Level to Shared in the firewall. This setting will vary by firewall. Once you do that it is just matter of following the steps in the Sticky. It really is pretty simple once you figure it out.

As far as YouTube, the simplest method is to use a browser that supports video playback from Youtube on the eDGe. Another forum member pointed out that Miren browser will play videos directly from youtube.com as well as xScope browser. Links to these browsers are in the Sticky as well. Let me know if you have any other questions or need more assistance.

New user, just got mine from Woot. Would have been lost without this site, even better than XDA for the Edge. Updated to Ermine 2.2 right away and all is running great. I have a folder in drop box just for apk and makes life easy. Got swype working, all my emails and even VOIP without a glitch.
This device is 10x what I was hoping for, now, to just avoid the WSOD.

Welcome. Glad to hear someone was actually able to upgrade quickly and without a headache. The DropBox apk folder is an excellent idea. Especially if you ever have to go back and re-install an App. I do a similar thing where I try and download all apks using a PC and then transfer to the eDGe. This allows me to have a backup of the App. As far as the WSOD, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is a rare occurrence and in my opinion more apt to be a hardware problem then a software problem. Good luck and enjoy your PE.

I appologize if this has been already discussed. I ipdated to Ermine 2.2. Now whenever I am trying to run Google Maps and trying to get direction, it is showing a message that set your location in the system setting. But there is no way to set locations in Setting. I checked all of the options in the sub menu. So how do I set the location?

Any help here will be highly appreciated.

Fabulous compilation of information. I have a PE and followed how to put Ermine on. I am pouring through this site but there are some things I just "don't get" yet. Pardon my stupidity, but I have downloaded a book from SlideMe and would like to read it on the E-ink side. I think I understand that it needs to be in my "Library" to read it in E-Ink; however, I cannot figure out how to get it INTO the "Library"....any ideas or am I missing something...?????

I tried to download a couple off free e-books from Slideme but they download as apk which mean they are an App file. I tried using the eDGe and a PC and both download as an App which means you probably won't be able to read them on the e-ink. I'll keep experimenting to see if I can get an e-book from Slideme to work on the e-ink and in the meantime maybe another forum member will read this post and have an immediate answer.

Update: I haven't any success getting an ebook from Slideme to the e-reader. Sorry.

Has anyone had a problem with the PE Calendar? It was working fine after I upgraded to the beta 2.2. Today I loaded some activites in and now I can't get any of the dates to open to allow me to enter an event. Any suggestions? Good point. Another thing to try is to press the MENU button on the Home Screen , select Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, select the All tab and touch Calendar and Clear Data and press the BACK ARROW and touch Calendar Storage and Clear Data.

Going from memory; with email open, press menu and there should be an option to delete. Otherwise, you could just remove the entries entered when setting up the email account.

Hi everybody.
After your fundamental help in the upgrade for Froyo, I'm here again to ask for a couple of things (don't know wether this is the right forum or not:o).
1) I'd like to install a tts on the PE and since it seemed to me ready for pico tts, I read the dedicated 3ds and tried to install it, but it requires an sd card that I don't have at the moment. Is there any way to install it on the internal storage? (Not sure I've understood the procedure very weel, but it seemed so).
2) quite a similar problem with the dictionaries. I wanted to use stardicts (even if it was quite difficult to me to understand the procedure) and I read the dedicated 3rd and bla bla, but again it is asking for sd. Again, anything I can do to use the internal storage.
As usual, thanks a lot if anyone can help me.

Good luck to you all with your new purchases; might you find it/them as cool as I have come to delightfully discover with mine! s//

A couple of things to try:

- Make sure you only hold the Menu and Rotate buttons for about 10 seconds

- Try another USB thumb drive or a microSD card if available (see the last post in this thread: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134237&page=15)

- Try downloading the Ermine update from another source

A couple of things: Are you sure you have the Ermine update for the EE and not for the PE? That's important. ;)

Dingo 1.11 is not the latest Dingo. You might need/want to update Dingo first.

Of course, by now you may have overcome all obstacles and be enjoying your Ermanized EE -- I hope so! :D

The fact that it is at least initializing is encouraging. If the suggestions provided by Filark don't work you may have to flash the PE back to Dingo 1.13 and see if that helps. This is a complete reformat of the Pocket Edge and all user data and configurations will be deleted. Hope all turns out well.

If you renamed it update.zip, Windows by default will add the file extension association and you end up with update.zip.zip. Try renaming it update. With the SD card inserted turn on the Edge without trying to update to make sure you don't get an SD card damaged error which indicates it needs reformatting. If so, Also, Quick Format the SD Card FAT32 and copy the update.zip file to the SD card before using in the Edge.

When powering up, only hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons for about 10 seconds, not 2 minutes. After about 2 minutes the update splash screen should appear. The procedure works with a USB drive which you may want to try if the SD card method fails.

In the native browser tap on the bookmarks icon (banner with a star on it). You will see 3 tabs along the top of the page. Tap on History, then hit the menu key and you will see an option to clear history. :)

This assumes you are running Ermine and using the stock browser. Other browsers and Dingo might be different.

First thing Chevalier529, have you unzipped Pablob's zip file and read the instructions therein? If you haven't then there is no way you are going to update by just renaming the file.

Next thing, be aware that not all USB sticks are created equal - some will work as boot media and some will not. If one does not work, try another.

The ZIP file has the update file and instructions. Unzip it first, and double check the instructions. (http://edge.ympsa.com/)

Make sure the PE recognizes the USB or SD Card by plugging it into the Edge before attempting the upgrade. A lot of users report a smaller USB drive often helps. Other users have reported trying multiple storage drives before an update works. The SD card sometimes will be reported as "damaged" by the PE so just make sure this isn't the case. Also, make sure you only hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons for about 10 seconds when turning on the PE and then let go.

I haven't had a problem with the stock browser on the PE, even on Mobileread. However, a few suggestions:

Turn off Java script in the browser settings and see if that helps. Access Settings by pressing the MENU button on the LCD with the browser open.

Try another browser. There are several excellent browsers on the first post of this thread which may find work better than the stock browser. Opera Mini and Dolphin Mini are two of the best IMO.

Good luck.

The procedure for updating or replacing the OS on the EE and PE are the same. The only difference is the update file used. If you own an EE, use strictly EE files. Stay away from PE files.

You say you attempted to update a full size eDGe to Ermine with the PE update? Are you 100 percent sure? The reason I ask is because your symptoms as reported are inconsistent with other owners who have installed an incorrect file, albeit on a Pocket eDGe. However, I would suspect the symptoms would be the same. These owners experienced a reverse / mirror Entourage image upon boot up (see posts # 1, # 7, # 9, and # 10: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148857&highlight=weird+boot). You say your screen is blank. It's possible that the update was corrupted during download or something else went wrong. Let's start under the assumption that you did NOT download the incorrect file and something else happened.

Do NOT Give Up !!!

Read the remainder of this post carefully before proceeding. Planning and preparation will increase your chances of recovering your eDGe. There are two Golden Dingo options to try, both of which offer a very good chance that your eDGe will be restored to working order. The serial cable option following these should be the very last resort. Based on your symptoms I don't think you will need it.

You say the download link for the Golden EE Update didn't work? Does this mean it didn't work when you tried to install it? I double checked the download link and it works and I added another download link as backup. Plus, a couple of new EE owners used the Golden Dingo Operating System file in question and were able to successfully update their EE from Coyote to Dingo just a few days ago (see post #14): http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170135

I suggest you take a step back and start from scratch.

Download the Full Size eDGe Dingo Operating System again using either the primary or alternate link:

http://www.ethanphoenix.com/entourageedge/files/Firmware/Dingo/Edge%202.0/update.golden.zip

http://www.ympsa.com/pe/restorefactory16/update.golden16fullsizeEE.zip

Follow the PDF for Reverting from Ermine to Dingo attached to this post exactly.

The Dingo Golden Update file must be renamed to update.zip in order for it to work. By default Windows will add the zip extension so make sure the file is NOT update.zip.zip.

Make sure the update.zip is in the root of the USB drive or SD card and NOT in some folder.

These installations can sometimes be a little finicky. Do NOT throw in the towel after one or two tries !!! You may want to try another USB drive or an SD card as well. There are plenty of users on this forum that will tell you first hand that these installs can be a real pain in the keister.

Think I'm kidding. Check this out (posts # 18 and # 19): http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152244&highlight=update+problem&page=2

Are you using a USB thumb drive or a SD card? Some owners who had no luck with a USB drive went SD and it worked, or went from SD to USB and that worked. http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134237&highlight=emusan&page=13 (see posts # 183 and # 188)

OR

they tried another USB stick: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135583&page=2 (see post # 21)

Do NOT Give Up !! The instructions from Entourage say to hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons for 10 seconds and after 1-2 minutes you should see the updating software message. Check out this thread:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152244&page=2 (see post # 30).

Main source of problems:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134237&highlight=emusan&page=10 (Look at post # 147)

Do NOT Give Up !!!

If the Golden Dingo just doesn't seem to want to work the recovery installer might be the source of the problem. See post # 2 of this thread and download the modified EE version (make sure it is the EE version) and try it again. Carefully read the very first post, especially step # 4. Although this thread was in reference to a Pocket eDGe, emusan modified a Pocket Edge and Full Size Edge version which should help with an upgrade that hangs up.

I suggest you read the entire thread. It's only two pages long. Several owners were able to recover their device using darkgue's solution along with emusan's modified Golden Dingo file.

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143035&highlight=edge+update

If you used the wrong update file it isn't as simple as using a Golden Update file to fix it. If you tried to update an EE to Ermine with the PE file do NOT try to revert back using the PE Golden Dingo. This will only make matters worse.

Unfortunately Entourage did not provide a recovery partition on the eDGe. The procedure to recover from using the wrong update file can be found here (post #88): http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1781507#post1781507

AND you will want to look at this as well:

(post # 62): http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145540&highlight=wrong+update&page=5

See post # 94 for a complete set of cables required (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145540&page=7)

Basically you use the USB to DB-9 cable from your PC, plug one end of the DB-9 to DB-9 cable into the DB-9 end of the USB cable, and chop off the other end and mate it to the 3 pin header cable.

DB9 Pin 2 (RX) --> Header Pin 1 (TX)
DB9 Pin 5 (Gnd) --> Header Pin 2 (Gnd)
DB9 Pin 3 (TX) --> Header Pin 3 (RX)

OR

If you or someone else can open the DB-9 end of the USB / DB-9 cable and carefully identify and label the wires attached to pins 2, 3, and 5 of the DB-9 connector, you can wire those directly to the header cable wires and eliminate the DB-9 to DB-9 cable.

OR

I really can't tell from the photos but, you may be able to cut and separate the male pins on a prefabricated 3-pin header cable like this one (http://www.amazon.com/3-pin-Female-Male-Shielded-Extension-Wire/dp/B005TX3JWE) and plug these into pins 2, 3, and 5 of a DB-9 to USB cable ([http://www.amazon.com/RS-232-DB-9-Cable-RS232-SERIAL/dp/B00404P07A/ref=sr_1_27?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1330545311&sr=1-27) with a DB-9 gender changer (http://www.amazon.com/Your-Cable-Store-Coupler-Shipping/dp/B002HYDLIU/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1330536119&sr=1-15) and eliminate the need for soldering and the DB-9 to DB-9 cable. Notice on the gender changer the pins are clearly numbered.

I have not personally had to use this procedure, however, I can tell you this procedure does require some technical ability. If you know anyone with good technical knowledge and soldering skills they should be able help you with this procedure. I was an electronics technician in the U.S. Navy so I'm speaking from that perspective, but once the cable is built the instructions are not too difficult.

Entourage is still in business in Europe and may be able to help: http://entourageedge.eu/

If you bought your eDGe new check and see if the seller may be able to exchange it.

If you paid by credit card there is a good possibility that the credit card issuer may provide you with a warranty. See post # 10: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83172&highlight=credit+card+company

Depending on when and where you bought your EE, it may not be to late to purchase a SquareTrade warranty: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=me%3DA1B45FIBP2TU2&field-keywords=tablet&x=0&y=0

Or directly from SquareTrade. Google SquareTrade discount codes and you can usually save at least 20%.

I know it stink's that your eDGe is down for the count. You need to explore all options in your attempt to fix it or replace it. I wish you luck.

Welcome to MobileRead, wanchen_chang! :)

Thank you for the reply. Can you tell me what the latest Dingo is and how I can update?

Filark

Wanchen_chang, I was mistaken -- Dingo 1.11 is the latest for the full-sized EE. See Lorenzoens excellent thread about all the different firmware updates for both sizes of the eDGe here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170249. And the first post in this thread, by Obsessed2, gives information on updating as well. :)

Good luck!

For the first time i am unable to get a market app, bluekeyboard jp, elsewhere. So two questions: in the end, is there no way to get market apps on the ee without another android phone? Has someone seen this app elsewhere?

Someone posted some time ago that they had the market on their EE but it appeared to be a bit 'iffy' so I never tried it.

Regarding the app you want, I just put bluekeyboard jp.apk into a google search and found it on androidezoom where they have the free and pro version.

I doubt you are doing anything wrong - I just found it but didn't try to download.

It appears that all places with it lead back to the market so maybe you could contact the developer and ask if they would e-mail you a copy.

My wife wanted to read books in the dark. I found FBReader on the Amazon AppStore and it really works quite well on her Red pocket edge. By the way, I have a newer Black pocket edge and I think they are different in more ways than color.

The main thing I noticed is that I set the red one to have a b&w pencil sketch of our grand daughter as wallpaper when turned off. I just can't do that with my black one.

The About eDGe data are identical.

My apps include:
Facebook
Gmail
Google Search
Latitude
News and Weather
Places
Talk
Twitter
Voice
Voice Search
YouTube

Mine was sold as new on eBay and the seller updated it.

OK, try this way - it means you don't have to change the default picture.

Open Gallery -> select a picture -> menu button -> select 'set-as' -> select 'reader wallpaper'

That should do it for you.

Good morning All ! ! I'm beyond excited to have found this forum and after reading through page after page after page - I MIGHT have a new one for all the techies and Experts that have helped salvage the PE for others in the past....here's the deal....I have a PE that has the following settings (pay particular note to the Build Number)

Model number: edgejr
Firmware Version: 1.6
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 / buildmaster@zeke#4
Build number: DINGO-1.8

Soooooo - what appears to be different with my PE (that I've tried updating on multiple occasions using USB sticks AND SD Cards of different memory capacity) is that is shows DINGO-1.8

Here's the thing.....I'm not the most tech savvy person and I'm guilty of asking all the wrong questions, so, with that in mind.....Can someone help answer a) Why my DINGO version is 1.8 and does that keep me from updating my PE ? ? And b) how to update a DINGO 1.8 version ? ? I've tried all other update options to no avail....

I'm assuming that because my prior updates have failed, it must be because I have a buildnumber that is definitely different from other build numbers referenced on this site.....Can anyone lead me to a fix ?

I've tried updating with the following SD Cards (256 mb, 1.0 gb, 2.0 gb), and I've tried using the following USB sticks (1 gb, 2gb, 4gb) all to no avail....
I have indeed made sure the file was renamed AND loaded onto ROOT of the sticks/cards still to no avail.

Like others, after trying (and failing) - I do get a new LOST.dir added to the stick/card...Can anyone point me in the right direction OR are there any moderators (or members) that I can ship my PE TO and for a nice rounded sum of money and have that saviour "update" my PE and ship it back to me ? I'll pay for their time, work, and return shipping ! ! ! I offer this because I'm hoping THAT saviour will agree to a "dollar amount" that is less than me buying a new Galaxy tablet or iPad or similar device that still has a company behind it (plus -with a job market like we have in the U.S., it might help supplement a person's income or help them develop an income if its not already there for them)....I'm not sure if this has been suggested and I truly hope no one takes offense to me offering - I'm just trying to use a device and maybe help out the person (financially) that will HELP me use this device....

Thanks for reading and sorry to those offended by me suggesting to pay for this service ! ! ! Have a good weekend and an awesome holiday everyone ! ! !

Very strange.

Are there any other differences between your two units? By that I mean things like firmware revision, installed apps etc.

Internally both units should be identical regarding the hardware, therefore it must be something in the software that is causing the problem.

Is the picture that doesn't stay during shut down in the same relative directory on both units? If you open a book in the reader does the last page you were viewing stay when you switch off?

ivanjt

qmast2002, a couple of questions.

First, what update are you trying to use?

Second, are you sure the you have a good download of the update.zip file and if you are using pablob rc3 file have you unzipped it and read the instructions inside?

The Settings/About eDGe data are identical.

The apps are the same but my black PE has the Google apps.

Gallery shows the .jpg images are in sdcard, DCIM, and download...just where I put them.

The last page of a book opened in reader does not stay on the screen when the PE is turned off. The red PE shows my grand daughter's image, the black PE shows the default screen with a drawing of the PE opened and a note at the bottom saying, "Slide the power switch to turn your device on."

I really have no problem. From what I read, it is uncommon for custom reader wallpaper to remain on the reader screen after shut-down.

I just set a Reader wallpaper for my EE, and it appears when I turn the EE off!! This makes the picture the first thing I see when I open my EE while it is off. On my PE I have a wallpaper I set long ago which does NOT show when I turn the unit off. My Reader wallpaper on the PE only shows when it is on and I do not have a book (or journal or calendar) open on the eink side. Since I always have a book open I rarely get to see the wallpaper. :book2: ;)

When my (black) PE is off I get the "slide to turn on" screen. I'm pretty excited to have a picture of my dog and cat instead of the how-to-turn-on screen on my EE now when it's off! :) Thanks for getting me to try the wallpaper on my EE, bouldergramp!

So it looks like some of the PEs act like the EE in this regard, and some don't. Do all EEs default to the wallpaper when off, I wonder?

Filark, all the EEs I have seen show the picture that you set using the gallery -> select picture ... routine I mentioned above - which reminds me that I should change mine to the summer picture ;)

I find it strange that only some of the PEs do this. Maybe it has something to do with the physical build level and saving 0.001cent per unit.

Well, I truly appreciate all of the well wishes from others on this forum. It makes me want to give it a few more tries. I think I'll start by going to a store and buying a few USB sticks starting at 256MB on up and getting a few different brands to really give it a good shot....In terms of answering the above questions:

I've tried the dustyfeet updates, the GoldenAllmine update, the p.e. original updates, really - I've tried a few different ones....
In terms of "what update are you trying to use?" - that brings up a very good question I've been wanting to ask....

What steps or updates should one follow when trying to have access to the apps market? For example, in my case.....I have a DINGO-1.8 system (something that I've not seen others with on this forum so it makes me wonder if I have a weird system), Firmware version of 1.6, Kernel version of 2.6.29 witha buildmaster@zeke #4....What should be the first step I should take ? Should I update from Dingo to *-----* - or downgrade from DINGO to *-----*, and then update from that to *-----*, etc......

I'm trying my best to follow -what to update to-when your system is such and such.....I was under the impression that whatever system you're on (DINGO 1.6, DINGO 1.8, etc.)- you can just do an update (allmine, ermine, etc.) and your PE would then be switched over to it. Something tells me I'm not understanding it all correctly...
