problem scaling images

Hi, I have a file converted from mobi to epub via Calibre. Images are "called" by "calibre 3", e.g.

Code:
<p class="calibre33"><img alt="image" class="calibre3" src="../Images/00042.jpg" /></p>
so in order to allow them to be scaled to the screen width I have used Sigil to edit the css file, substituting:

Code:
.calibre3 {
    height: auto;
    width: 100%
    }
to the original

Code:
.calibre3 {
    height: auto;
    width: auto
    }
in Sigil, so far so good, the pictures are rescaled accordingly. But when I load the file in my reader (Pocketbook 903), the pictures look small, as if I had made no changes to the css file.

Any suggestions as to where I am going wrong would be greatly appreciated - I am rather software illiterate, so please be gentle

EDIT: though this question involves EPUB, Calibre and Sigil, the EPUB forum looked the most appropriate palce to post, hope this is ok.

The images probably are small. Have a look at the size of the images outside of the ePub and see if they really are small. I've seen images in Mobipocket that are too small to be of any use such as a map.

thanks for your answer - I checked them, and they are all more or less 500 by 400: is this too small? On the other hand, I am starting to suspect it may be an issue with the reader programme I am using (FBreader), as I have tried with another one (Adobereader), and in it the imagese are huge!

It shouldn't matter, because "width: 100%" scales the image up or down to take the full width of the containing block (usually the screen). What is the code in .calibre33?

calibre33 hints at a MS word crufty conversion.

See if there is a .xpgt file in ../Styles
Blow that sucker away

here is calibre 33:
Code:
.calibre33 {
    display: block;
    margin-bottom: 0;
    margin-left: 0;
    margin-right: 0;
    margin-top: 7px;
    text-align: center;
    text-indent: 0
    }
but no .xpgt in ?Styles, just the css file.

Well, some readers just don't obey all CSS rules, I'm afraid FBReader is one of them.

The images are not small. But FBReader just isn't handling them properly. ADE will though. So the solution is to drop FBR and go with ADE.

Thanks so much. What a pity, though!

Don't your Pocketbooks use ADE? If they do, what's the problem?

yes, they do - the problem though is that there is very little (if anything) to customise with the Adobereader. My biggest complaint is that it is not possible (as far as I know) to change the font. There was a hack for this, but I do not think it works with the new models.

Thank you all again for your prompt help!
