View Full Version : Very disapointed in screen quality
GuardianZX9 08-13-2007, 01:05 PM Hello,
New Iliad owner here, I purchased the Iliad after owning 2 Sony readers and I have to say the screen quality is extremly inferior to that of the Sony, the ghosting on my device is horrible, so much that most of the last page read is still there ghosted between the lines of the current page, and the place where the main menu bars are located is always visible, even when off.
I paid a premium for the Iliad and I really expected this unit to perform on par with the pricing.
Is this common with all of the Iliad devices? as I said my Sony readers are excellent and have almost no ghosting at all, it very hard to see any ghosting traces at all on either device.
Do I have any recourse? will IRex replace the device for a better quality unit or am I stuck with this unit?
Thanks
G
templario 08-13-2007, 02:31 PM I have had my Iliad since the end of last year and i never had ghosting problems. I suppose you could contact techsupport and send pictures of your fawlty Iliad.

tribble 08-13-2007, 03:52 PM Well, the impression on the iLiad and the Sony screen should be similar. If you have bad ghosting as you describe, there is probably a screen defect.
Contacting iRex techsupport is good advice.
techsupport@irextechnologies.com
And send pictures and your MAC address.
vranghel 08-13-2007, 07:54 PM In the beggining (early firmaware releases) the gosting effect was more pronounced. Now it has subsided quite a lot.
HarryT 08-14-2007, 01:20 AM No visible ghosting at all on my iLiad. The screen is considerably better than my Sony Reader.

This is probably a wearoff effect. After a few weeks, the eink screens loose a bit of contrast. At least in my experience. But you notice it only, when you put a brand new eink screen beside the old one ;)

As said by others: this is not normal. iRex' techniqual support should help you.
GuardianZX9 08-15-2007, 07:52 PM I have the dealer trying to get me a replacement, he is out, hopefully next week. I am otherwise happy with the unit, it is nice to take notes on with the exception of the buttons at the bottom getting in the way, would be nice to invert the screen for taking notes so the buttons dont get pressed.

Good luck in getting it replaced! It really sounds like you got a defective unit... last time I compared the two, the iLiad was a clear winner in screen quality compared to the Sony.

That's certainly the case with mine. The 16 grey-scales of the iLiad make it a clear winner in terms of being able to show detailed icons, etc. My iLiad screen has absolutely no trace of ghosting, whereas my Sony has faint ghosting.
GuardianZX9 09-11-2007, 10:12 PM So, got a replacement from the dealer and it is even worse than the first, so much for the dealer "checking every unit" that he sells prior to shipping, my unit was never opened and still sealed from the factory.
The second unit was so bad that the menu bars are visable all the time, even after 10+ page turns.
Also the bottom software buttons are also always there.
I can't belive that I am the only one seeing this attributes, one unit I can understand, but 2 in a row.
My Sony was nowhere this bad, I had almost no ghosting at all with either of my 2 PRS-500's.

DeGodefroi 09-12-2007, 10:26 AM I also have ghosting on my Iliad.
I see the status icons also all the time but faintly.
I await 2.11 and will then see how it goes. Right now I can still read very well.
bojan 09-12-2007, 03:41 PM Can you post any images, maybe with the Iliad turned off?
When I got mine, with the Iliad turned off the screen was absolutely white. Now, after three weeks I'm beginning to see some ghosting, but is barely visible.
Also check this (http://forum.irexnet.com/viewtopic.php?t=1655&start=0) thread, you can use the test pdf available there and compare the results.
It looks like you really had a bad luck, with two bad units in a row.
HarryT 09-12-2007, 09:46 PM There's something very odd going on. My iLiad, after a couple of months of heavy use, has absolutely no trace of ghosting. Zero.
DeGodefroi 09-13-2007, 08:43 AM You see just a pure virgin white/light grey screen when it is off?
HarryT 09-13-2007, 11:06 AM Yes. Completely and absolutely blank.
GuardianZX9 09-15-2007, 09:47 PM Well, sent the2nd replacement back to the dealer and iRex sent me a repair box, so I will have to see what I get back. I will try to post some of the images I took of the unit before I sent it in for repair.
I wonder if they will actually replace the screen ro just send me a refurbished unit.

vranghel 09-16-2007, 07:50 PM When i sent my unit in beacaus of screen issues, they sent me a new unit.
GuardianZX9 09-18-2007, 07:14 PM I am hopeful, curious, how long did it take to get your replacement unit?
Thanks
G
Adam B. 09-19-2007, 02:39 PM I've got my iLiad back today. The screen looks amazing! I don't know if my iLiad had lost a lot of contrast in 8 months, had a major screen defect, or if they have started using better screens, but there is very little ghosting, and the contrast is great! I can't imagine anyone complaining about screen quality if it looks like this.
HarryT 09-20-2007, 09:41 AM As I've said before, Adam, my screen has zero ghosting. I don't just mean "only a bit" or "barely noticeable", but absolutely zero. It's drastically better than the screen of my Sony Reader.
There does seem to be a wide variation in the "quality" of individual eInk screens, even on the same device.
sianon 09-20-2007, 04:57 PM Mine has very minor ghosting, however it is not visible when reading.
GuardianZX9 09-26-2007, 10:13 PM Well, I received my replacement unit today, it appears that is the same unit with a new screen, not for sure, but it has the same MAC address as the first unit.
The screen is amazing, much more white than the first, the first units screen was more like my sony reader, more gray than white, this unit looks very much like paper, the contrast is incredible, the black is so dark it looks like sharpie marker on printer paper.
There is almost no ghosting at all anymore, it is so faint that if you are not looking for it you will never see it, it is very easy to read now, no lines between the lines anymore.
I also loaded the new FW and they have made some great changes, glad to see the improvements in wifi conectivity as well as the calibration unit.
Thanks iRex for fixing my unit, it is now much closer to the price I paid for it :)
Now if we can only get some US newspapers to sign and some way to auto upload RSS feeds via wifi every day then this will be a real contender to standard print and PC reading.

Almagne 09-28-2007, 06:21 PM Here a few shots of my screen I took today. Irex support had been contacted a few weeks ago and they requested a some pictures. I waited until 2.12 came out in hopes that the new version would help things. As you can see - the ghosting is there. I do expect Irex to replace the screen. The photos are posted to give an example of the ghosting, so that those who are not having this issue can compare.
Update: Irex responded to my photos within a few hours and said it need to be repaired. They are sending a return box.
DeGodefroi 09-29-2007, 09:17 AM Hmm my Iliad also shows the same ghosting. But approx half the intensity. I am keeping an eye on it. I wait becuase of 2 reasons. I still have plenty warranty time and I may do this same time when the battery is changed to the extra large version.
Almagne 09-29-2007, 01:01 PM I have been waiting also for the battery update, and had hoped to do both at the same time. Ultimately, though, it seemed better to send it in well before the warranty in case there are problems. I just hope it does not take too long from Irex to return it.
GuardianZX9 09-29-2007, 03:26 PM Thats exactly what my unit was doing prior to being sent back. The replaced/repaired unit suffers from none of this. Any remaining extremely minor ghosting that I see now is mostly due to the screen refresh, once the screen refreshes once its all gone.
The new unit is great compared to your pictures, I highly recommend that you send your unit in for repair. I didnt pay $700+ for a crappy screen.

Almagne 11-07-2007, 07:51 PM An update:
My iLiad went back to Europe and was returned in about a week and a half. Great turn around time! The new screen looks great; only the most faint ghosting is visible.
I did inquire about getting the battery replacement, but they said they were out of stock and would not get more for about 6 weeks. I just had them return it without the new battery.

juancarlosleo 11-26-2007, 04:40 PM I have had 2 devices of Iliad: boths have degrée his contrast screen.
DeGodefroi 11-30-2007, 02:16 AM Please keep it in English.
Babelfish translation on juancarlosleo's text:
I do not believe that it is a chance: the 2 Iliad that I have had, after 3 months have become more and grayer. I do not believe that she has 16 degrees of grays, I believe that it is absolutely false... in fact, in agreement spends the time, everything is become an only and frightful dark gray. I am sure that many have the same problem, in fact the forum of Iliad always has been full of these complaints.... but these artists dedicate themselves to confuse, to watch pa another side, improving useless softwares, and attacking the main problem that they have, and is not that the resistance text-bottom is terrible. For the new people who show this way to inquire before buying, attention: this way there are several "salesmen" whom they love to save his product at all costs, clearing importance to this "problemilla", diminishing the subject, and so... Then you know, that no, that there is very displeased people. And I, of course, nonWendish nothing, am not of any competition, only a user cabreao. Its technical support does not work. I have waited for two months to that they answer me for the last problem.... and already there am hartao of as much dance: I have decided to throw this sweepings and in compensation I am going to crush to them with bad propaganda to where it can. I lost 650 euros; I have dissuaded (I did not have more to show the Iliad to them) 4 friends, and already hope that my testimony is used for some... specially the Spanish-speaking community, than I I do not express myself well in English.
DeGodefroi 11-30-2007, 02:21 AM Well, how much grey is it? Yes it is grey and not white. Just like printed on recycled paper in the 80s :-)
But how well can you read from your Iliad?
And you can contact tech support per email. Keep the message short and clear and include a picture of the screen if there is a problem.
Crusades against Irex is senseless and only makes you look like a bad person. And it does not help your issues.
Kindness helps a lot. Tech people are just...people.
Is Irex perfect? Nope.
