View Full Version : iLiad Manual Comic Strip Downloader Released
Adam B. 08-06-2007, 10:35 AM This is very similar to the automatic version here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12662), except that you manually initiate the download.
Due to the instability of this page with iRex's html viewer, you will need to install my latest port of FBReader (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11344)
When you select the program, it will check to see if it's updated today. If it has not, it will automatically open the connection manager, and download the day's comics. When finished, it will open FBReader and display the comic page. If it has already downloaded, it will simply open FBReader with the comics.
You can unzip the program into any directory you'd like.
Edit: The attachment has been updated to allow directories with spaces
Edit 2: If you are having prolbems viewing all of the images and have unbricking support, see this post (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=90439&postcount=20)
Robert Marquard 08-06-2007, 01:40 PM From my experience with Dilbert or userfriendly the program should only try to download after a specified time of the day. Usually such cartoons or comics are posted by a script at a precise time.
I have not checked your program for lack of an iLiad so this is just in case you did not implement it that way already.
Hadrien 08-06-2007, 02:05 PM From my experience with Dilbert or userfriendly the program should only try to download after a specified time of the day. Usually such cartoons or comics are posted by a script at a precise time.

Yes, most webcomics are updated this way.
That's the case for Sinfest, PvP, Diesel Sweeties etc...
Adam B. 08-06-2007, 02:07 PM The problem is that the iLiad is setup to use the UTC time zone unless the user has specified differently. In making the above script, I wanted a simple one-click process for the user to automatically fetch their comics. If you need to re-download, simply delete the date in the description and select it again.
Adam B. 08-06-2007, 03:21 PM I've updated the original post with a version that will allow for directories with spaces. This is useful if you rename or change it with the ContentLister.
lee1234 08-07-2007, 11:01 PM I wish FBReader will also support Cybook or Nuut. Iliad is too expensive.
DeGodefroi 08-08-2007, 11:06 AM How do I install this? Not clear..is not a package like fbreader.
And how do you get the comics link?
Adam B. 08-08-2007, 11:15 AM How do I install this? Not clear..is not a package like fbreader.
And how do you get the comics link?
You unzip it, copy it to your device. And run it like any other program from the iLiad.
DeGodefroi 08-08-2007, 03:24 PM Ok will try it then!
thnx!
OK it works, but I only got penny arcade and diesel thingy and 2 more comics, no dilbert and almost none of the others. How come?
And dumb question..what is the 56 before every title?
But despite this..good job so far Adam!
A re download script would be nice as well instead of editing the date in the script.
I also wonder, do the comics append every day or wipe clean?
Adam B. 08-08-2007, 04:47 PM When you connect your iLiad to your computer, and look in the "web" directory inside the comic directory, do you see any other comics?
tribble 08-08-2007, 04:54 PM I cant get it to work. It hands on the connection. Is it working with LAN only?
Adam B. 08-08-2007, 07:31 PM I cant get it to work. It hands on the connection. Is it working with LAN only?
If you can connect to IDS, than this should work for you.
What's in your output.txt inside that folder?
DeGodefroi 08-09-2007, 05:33 AM Hmm I see "some" comics. Still just a few..but 3 more jpgs there then even shown on fbreader.
When I load the index.hml page I see just a few. When I reload that via the pc I see all comics as it should be. But only on my Firefox.
12 jpgs is only I get and worse is that only 6 are shown in FBreader.
I am going to try downloading again. I run this on my CF card and not internal memory.
edit
new download, nothing added. FBreader just shows the title of comics but no comic at all. I am also not able to change previous day next day..when I click i only see a ' where the stylus hit the option.
Something is acting weird here.
Edit2: It hangs now at the wifi page searching...first blinking then text stays searching non blinking, top of page says fetching comics please wait
After 10 mins still nothing happens and I shut down the iliad. And the comics script still shows yesterdays date.
DeGodefroi 08-10-2007, 10:30 AM Output.txt shows the following. It looks as if the connection to high5.net is blocked or so?

Adam B. 08-10-2007, 10:39 AM It looks like your network is blocking the connection. It's unlikely it's a problem with the iLiad itself...
DeGodefroi 08-10-2007, 03:31 PM I managed a later download, but there i end up with a few comics downloaded and the rest not.
But the output.txt shows further nothing. How is it going for other people?
And Adam, do you still get all comics from high5.net? Weird is that when i use my Internet browser I get all the comics..but not to the Iliad.
I still want you to know that I really appreciate your work and consider you a valuable improver of apps on the iliad. Thnx!
Now hopefully all gets downloaded tomorrow.
DeGodefroi 08-10-2007, 05:14 PM Ok..I tried again and still getting incomplete downloads and even weirder fbreader message.
Maybe it makes sense for you Adam:

speck 08-16-2007, 08:41 PM I can see the comics on my PC under WEB, but no comics are on my iLiad. Only the files are listed, like 1 16 August 2007 - Sinfest. There are 26 of these files on one page, and 3 on the next.
What am I doing wrong?
DeGodefroi 08-22-2007, 10:45 AM For me it is still not working. I think FBreader is somehow having an issue here.
But I have never seen any response from good old Adam B here who might make sense of the

Adam, can you please help us poor slobs here? :-)
Adam B. 08-22-2007, 11:10 AM The attached should fix the problem. Sorry it took so long to figure it out. :o
Simply unzip to your iLiad and install.
It does modify the internal file system. So: Only install if you have unbricking support!
I've installed it many times without problems, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I installed, and I still don't see comics, just the "file" listings. Help!
Adam B. 08-23-2007, 08:53 AM That's odd, the additional loaders fixed the problem for me after a clean reflash.
Has anyone else had success (or failure) with the proposed fix?
DeGodefroi 08-23-2007, 10:19 AM Ok I installed the loaders.
Manually downloaded the comics..and .....
I saw ALL the comics!
You fixed my problem Adam B!

What do you mean by "reflash"? I did the install, rebooted, manually download the comics, and still only got the files "list". Is there anything else you might suggest for me to do?
thanks!

I can't imagine what your problem would be. Can you post the contents of your output.txt?

I spoke too soon. I got 3 pages of the same comics. I turned my iLiad off and returned later. Now I only get the "list" pages again. My output.txt file is empty.

I sure could use some help.
Thanks,
Adam B. 08-26-2007, 09:52 AM I honestly have no idea what it's doing. Can you delete the folder, unzip a new copy, and run it. If it doesn't work, can you post your output.txt?

Thanks for your reply! I've deleted the folder, unzipped again, and still the same results. Also my output.txt is empty. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

What firmware version are you running? Where are you running the program from? There should always be something in the output.txt... Try downloading it again and put it in the root of your compact flash card.

Ok, I now get 16 comics, and there's about 3 pages of listings. Is there a way of choosing what comics I'd want?
Thanks again for your help.

Here you go:
The comics displayed and order is determined by a cookie. I've included a cookie that has a few that I like. If you wish to add more or change the order, you'll need to do the following.
Visit http://high5.net/comic/
Expand and order the comics as you like
Copy your cookies.txt (~/.mozilla/firefox/profile/ on your linux pc if you use firefox) to /mnt/free/books/Comics/ on your iLiad
Windows IE users will need to use the export cookies function of their browser. Windows and Firefox should be in "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile"

Is your CF card formatted with fat?
To fix the problem, download mrxvt and type the following (Note the Capitol Letters):
chmod a+x /usr/local/programs/FBReader/fbreader.sh
I unzipped the file to the iLiad then ran it.
It connected & downloaded the cartoons. It came back to the content lister & it's item said it was updated. Fbreader didn't open. I pressed the cartoon program again, the screen just flashed & came back.
I checked the output file:
/mnt/free/Comics/fetch.sh: 20: /usr/local/programs/FBReader/fbreader.sh: not found
But the FBreader folder shows when the iLiad is connected via USB to the PC
I also tried your Loaders file. I still just get a screen flash & back to the content lister.
Oh, the iLiad is running 2.12.
Thanks
Rico
Adam B. 03-25-2008, 08:19 AM If you're using the latest version of FBReader, you'll need to modify the fetch.sh file.
Open it up in notepad on your computer
replace:
/usr/local/programs/FBReader/fbreader.sh
with:
/usr/bin/fbreader.sh
It appears in that file twice.
Thanks Adam,
That and reinstalling FBReader got it working.
I'm not having the same luck with choosing the comics, though.
I used Firefox to go to the comic site and replaced the comics.txt file in the Comics directory on the iLiad with the one from Firefox. Was that what I was supposed to do? I don't quite understand what yuou were referring to by "/mnt/free/books/Comics/" Do I need a shell program to get there?
I don't know anything about Linyx. (I managed the Mobireader font change, but that was it.)
Rico
