Does anyone have a rough idea how many units have actually been sold (that's hardware not the ebooks)?
Is there a clear sales winner?

Is there a clear sales winner? Nate the great 07-25-2007, 11:17 AM Well, we know that the Sony Reader is up to 52xxx. JSWolf 07-25-2007, 11:17 AM Does anyone have a rough idea how many units have actually been sold (that's hardware not the ebooks)? Is there a clear sales winner? My guess given the lower price would be the Sony Reader. Leaping Gnome 07-25-2007, 11:34 AM I would think the Reader is definitely the clear winner just because of retail presence alone. How many Readers do you think Borders, SonyStyle, CompUSA, Fry's, Best Buy, etc... order nationwide for their stores? Now that is in the US of course, in Europe maybe it's different because the Reader is not officially offered there. jonf 07-25-2007, 11:56 AM hmmm.... if the clear winner has only racked up 52k, that suggests its still quite a small market.... maybe next year things will take off. JSWolf 07-25-2007, 12:44 PM By next year there should be more readers available to choose from and hopefully sometime next year we'll also be seeing Digital Editions on board some of them. jonf 07-27-2007, 07:29 AM Digital Editions??? NatCh 08-03-2007, 02:57 PM That would be Adobe's Digital Editions, jonf. You can find some info here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11567). :pleased: RWood 08-03-2007, 04:18 PM Since so many people seem to get wrapped around the axle (I heard that one from a Texan some years ago) about the lack of reflow in the PDF support for the current Reader, this situation could be corrected when Digital Editions is introduced. :D But don't worry, by then the critics will come up with more complains like the quality of the coffee it brews. :D kovidgoyal 08-03-2007, 04:54 PM Since so many people seem to get wrapped around the axle (I heard that one from a Texan some years ago) about the lack of reflow in the PDF support for the current Reader, this situation could be corrected when Digital Editions is introduced. I don't see how. Digital editions is not going to be able to reflow PDFs. Its just going to introduce a new format. Reading existing PDFs is still going to be a pain. Digital Editions will introduce what IDPF has been working on: a new file format to replace OEB (Mobipocket is based on OEB) with much better features. But Digital Editions should also support reflowable PDF even though this won't solve the problem, since most PDF files are not generated with reflow support. kovidgoyal 08-03-2007, 06:22 PM Doesn't adobe reader already support reflowable PDFs? Hadrien 08-03-2007, 06:32 PM Doesn't adobe reader already support reflowable PDFs? Adobe Reader does, but not the Adobe Reader that's on the Sony PRS-500. kovidgoyal 08-03-2007, 06:42 PM Ahh I didn't know that. |
