One of the Classics of Christian Devotional literature. Guyon was a famous writer from long ago. Her writing is very sensitive and lovely. None of this harsh religiosity that turns the stomach and stiffens the hearts wellsprings with Legalism.

Prayer is difficult enough as it is. To truly bring your heart in honesty and openness before the Lord and not treat prayer as if it is sorcery. As if God were a Genie and you Alladin.

Guyon keeps it simple and pure. It is we who are changed by prayer not God.

Our own hearts are the clay that is shaped by prayer not the other way around.

Highly recommended to those who pray.

A very interesting book.
Mme Guyon's quietism was not approved of by the 17th century French church authorities (who were suspicious of mysticism in any form) and she spent a short period in the Bastille. Her supporter, Archbishop Fenelon was disgraced and had to leave Versailles. There is an account of all this in Chapter VIII of Saint-Simon's 'Memoirs of Louis XIV' (already uploaded).
