I asked on MR for advice on which ULG to start with. For some reason I've never read her, although she's rated as one of the top SF writers. Somehow I've always seen her as a fantasy writer.

Got a tip on The Left Hand of Darkness and found an epub online (illegal copy but I wasn't sure I wanted it). Works fine in Calibre, but when it's loaded onto my Iriver it stops at page 4, right in the middle of the credits, and then bombs out.

Never one to give up, I went back online, found an html version, converted to epub with Calibre and loaded it on my Iriver. Got to page 16 and the same thing happened. It wipes it out in such a way that it isn't even on the list of recently used books.

I daren't buy one now. Think if I actually pay money for a copy and it does the same thing...

Anybody want to try one of the two copies I have?

The only "legal" copy that inkmesh finds is a PDF: The Left Hand of Darkness in Extra Large Print eBook (http://ebooks.ebookmall.com/title/left-hand-of-darkness-in-extra-large-print-le-guin-ebooks.htm). I put "legal" in quotes because it almost certainly does not pay the author any royalties. The PDF might work "as is" on your Iriver.

Two alternatives with legal ebooks versions are The Dispossessed and Word For World Is Forest.

Hi James,
If you want to fling them in my direction, I'm happy to have a look and see how I fare with them.

"Left Hand of Darkness" is very good, and perhaps her best-known title. Personally, I enjoyed her "The Word for World is Forest" more (obviously subjective).
