Edit 2/12/08: The most recent port of FBReader can be found here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20490

I'm releasing 0.8.4 as an Ipkg package as defined here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10585

Let me know how the install goes. Everything should be very simple now that there is one version for all memory cards.

One of the biggest changes is that the Options dialog now has arrows, so that all of fbreader's options can be changed. (see attached screenshot)

Other changes since last iLiad release (0.8.2b)

Version 0.8.4 is released (June 5, 2007).
Changes:

* Interface localization is now supported. All text resources has been moved to XML files. Resources for English and Russian are included in the package.
* CHM support has been improved.

Version 0.8.3d is released (May 18, 2007).
Changes:

* For mobipocket files (e.g., for files from the free Baen library) TOC building has been improved.
* OEB support has been improved.

Version 0.8.3c (for Windows, Linux/gtk desktop and PepperPad) is released (May 14, 2007).
Changes:

* In Windows version, the BMP image format support has been added.
* In Linux desktop (gtk) version, the problem with 'maximize-fullscreen-unfullscreen' sequence has been fixed.

Version 0.8.3b is released (May 12, 2007).
Changes:

* Mobipocket format support has been improved.
* Qtopia: selection has been fixed.
* PdaXRom (gtk): infinite loop during startup has been fixed.

Version 0.8.3 is released (May 9, 2007).
Changes:

* Text selection and copying to the clipboard have been added.

You can download it here: http://projects.mobileread.com/iliad/projects/fbreader/fbreaderinst.zip

Simply extract it to your memory card and run from the contentlister. It should automatically upgrade if you have a previous version installed as well.

Thanks, it is working. Just one bug, when you press the confirm button (dot) to go to fullscreen, you canīt go back to non-fullscreen pressing it again. I tried with the keys option without success.

I noticed the same bug. Not sure what's going on, I'll have to look into it further. As it's not a show-stopper, I decided to release it as-is.

Of course, this is jus a minor bug, the other features work very well, indeed a very useful program.

Installation bug. I don't use the library, so I forgot to test. :oops2:

I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

I've uploaded a new version (same filename) that shouldn't overwrite the old config files. Sorry about that.

Could something be done about the teeny tiny "+" buttons in the library view of FBReader? I'm having a lot of trouble hitting them with my stylus. Thanks!

Umm ok I downloaded this version, put it on the internal memory of the Illiad. Copied the unzipped dir to it.
In browsing internal memory I see install FBreader. But I cannot click on it or push the dot (between the 2 arrows). It just did not run.
I am no hacker..I have no linux/shell access etc and do not want to. Just FBreader to read rtf and such.
Thnx in advance

you need the shell script execution addon from iRex. Without that, you cant use any software from external sources.

What doesn't work? Have you reinstalled FBReader after you upgraded?

No, I didn't know that I had to reinstall it. I'll give it a try.

It works for me now, thanks!

Hi Adam,

using Firmware 2.10, I've downloaded it today, it appears to install correctly, but I have no icon anywhere on my CF card to run it..?

The install Icon's text changes to say "FBReader Has been Installed" "Delete this directory and run from Programs" but there is no FBReader icon in my Programs dir.

Edit: created own loader and pointed it to installed files.

Works well here on 2.10!

Even remembered my font and margin settings.

Though not sure if I was supposed to I executed the uninstall script first.

You realize that you have to edit that er_whatsitsname.txt file to get
FBReader to start by selecting just the books representation in content
lister?

Gee... it helps reading the second page too... ;)

An Update: I've found the bug that was preventing recent versions of FBReader from launching on the iLiad. You should be able to expect the newest version of FBReader (0.8.8) to be ported next week.

There have been a few changes since 0.8.4:

French translation of interface (by Pierre Senellart) has been added.
CHM support has been improved.
Ukrainian translation of interface has been added.
'0097' character bug has been fixed.
The *.epub files support has been added (table of contents building is not supported yet).
OEB metainfo support has been fixed.
Opening of the OEB/OpenReader file sppecified in the command line has been fixed.
Problem with JPEG images in mobipocket files has been fixed.
Line breaking bug has been fixed.
Default encoding option has been added.
Position indicator drawing and navigation problems have been fixed.
LZX decompression code has been completely rewritten.

I may have to push back the timeline of the FBReader release a bit.

I've found that the screen updates are much slower when using the hacked libX11. I manually call the page refresh when changing pages, but still use libX11 for the options and library screens.

When I use only internal refreshes, changing pages is much faster. With the previous version, it was a "one-and-two-and-three-an" count. Now, it's much similar to iPDF with a "one-and-two-a" count to refresh. I'll have to do a lot of digging though the code to make sure all the refreshes are in there and not interfering with each other. But I think it'll be worth the wait.

A status update: I have the latest version of FBReader compiled and working. Screen refreshes are quicker, still not PDF or Mobipocket speeds, but it's definitely useable.

Now I need to work on the hard part. Packaging it together and testing the installer. Expect a release early this week.

One thing that is in the newer versions is the automatic addition of MOBI ebooks to the library. I have found this a mixed blessing if you have many MOBI books, because startup is longer and the author names (if any) etcetera are whatever is in the MOBI file. It is possible to control this feature by editing FBReader's book path, and if you usually use the contentlister as your "library" view you should definitely make sure your FBReader path does not include any MOBI files. If you expect many books to be added to your library it might be worth saving a copy of your existing user state before upgrading.

W00t! I suppose there's not much point in giving you more MobileRead karma at this point, but I'd like to send you some of the Real Life kind. :D

Out of curiosity, is there a uninstaller for FBReader? Or does one need to reflash their iLiad to effect a removal?

Jeff

Out of curiosity, is there a uninstaller for FBReader? Yes. If FBReader (0.8.4) is /media/cf/Programs/FBReader then the uninstaller is /media/cf/Programs/Uninstall/FBReader

All it does is:
ipkg remove fbreader

I don't think FBReader is very intrusive if it is installed on the CF card. There are some softlinks from /usr/local to the CF card, but they are mostly harmless.

Many thanks!

Looks like I need to install a terminal emulator to find it as I installed it into main memory. Connecting the iLiad to me PC via USB only shows me the folders for books, news, documents, and newspapers.

Did you install Integrated FBReader 0.8.14 with ePub and Registry Support (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20490)? It apparently installs to system memory, and may not have an uninstall option.

If so, I suggest reposting to the above thread.

Wallcraft,

I installed from the fbreaderinst.zip file. Issuing the "ipkg remove fbreader" command through the terminal emulator removed the application. A test with an .rtf file has reverted back to the original iLiad icon with the "X" in it.

-many thanks,

Hi all,

I requested shell access, connected to IDS, downloaded it, restarted it.

Then i got the FBReader 8.4 install, copied it to my CF card. put my CF card in, navigated to it, clicked it, the screen flashes for a second and then it still shows the install there.

am i doing something wrong?

on my CF card, i put the install into "/App Installs/FBReader/fbreaderinst"

i'm running the 2.12 firmware ver.

as a follow up, the same thing happens with the xmahjongg installer, so i'm thinking it's a shell issue? is there some way to verify that the shell access has been installed?

Try removing the space in "App Installs". That causes problems with some launchers.

I thought that dragging the toolbar, or clicking a page in the middle will do this, but I'm not sure.

A long hold of page forward should advance by 5 pages or so.

Thx.. pressing on the toolbar just skips a page (sometimes) so I guess this might be considered a bug..

long hold I should test though.

long hold I should test though.

Long hold on page forward only resulted in a long wait and then randomly skipping one or 2 pages.. same as using the stylus on the bar.
Pressing the up and down arrow does skip more pages.. however it skips to the next chapter.. that's good, though not every book has a chapter (in my case FB2 files btw.. might have something to do with it?)

Could you tell me how to jump though a specific page and/or skip x pages ahead or back? There isn't an option to skip x pages. There is a "next section" option, which is bound to the arrow keys. This is useful for ebooks that have chapters. The other way to navigate is to use the stylus on the progress bar at the bottom of the page. There is a "goto page" option in the latest FBReader by the way, but it isn't available for the iLiad.

Hi, I was just wondering why the supported formats for fbreader do not include .prc. I have tried this format on fbreader on my iliad and it worked perfectly. Is there something i'm missing? I agree that FBReader does a better job than the MobiPocket Reader on DRM-free MOBI/PRC files, but it does not handle MOBI/PRC files with DRM (or MobiPocket's high compression option). The ContentLister has already assigned .prc files to the MobiPocket Reader, and this isn't changed by the Registry installer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14516).

Hi, It looks fairly trivial to edit the registry, If i want fbreader to open .prc by default is editing the update.sed file to include .prc?

Updating the SED file probably won't do it. The association already exists for using the mobipocket viewer.

You best bet is to use this regutils package (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23668), and mrxvt to make the change you need.

Of you could use the File Types UI in windows rather than editing the registry.

We're talking about the iLiad's registry. I don't know of any Windows utility that can edit that (other than a text editor).

That's the whole point "use the stylus on the progress bar at the bottom of the page" doesn't work.. it only skips 1 or 2 pages at the most.. Check that navigation is on (indicator tag under crossed tools). There are other indicator options, which I generally also turn on (see attached screenshot). If navigation is on, then perhaps the stylus needs calibrating.

I'm using 0.8.14 which has the toolbars gone so can't get to the settings :( I was able to use navigation in 0.8.14, however the progress bar is very small by default. See Update Settings for FBReader 0.8.14 (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24492) for how to make the bar bigger. You may also need to re-calibrate the touch screen.
