View Full Version : MobileRead migration complete / Small changes
Alexander Turcic 06-03-2007, 07:57 AM We are back! During the past four hours MobileRead had been migrated to a new server. Except for the photo gallery, all features are back and running.
You would do us a big favor if you could report any problems or annoyances you may encounter. We are more than happy to change things around. ;)
A few things that are new:
Frontpage. Beside the news, our frontpage also shows the latest hot topics, the latest polls, the latest Wiki edits, and the latest files attached to the forum.
Forum software. There are too many small changes to list here. The biggest improvement is that now a thread is marked read only if you have actually read it. Also, threads that are older than 10 days will be marked as read. Previously, all threads were automatically considered read once you've been inactive for a certain amount (cookie-based).
Fixed Layout: If you prefer our traditional liquid look, check out this post (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=72701#post72701).
What has not changed yet is our design. We are still waiting for our designer to deliver some results. I have great hopes that the results will be great, but until then, you'll have to stick to my obnoxious html skillz :D
CommanderROR 06-03-2007, 08:01 AM Hey alexander!
Good to see the page back up...but I must admit that something looks strange for me right now...
You said the design has not changed, but it looks quite different to me now. I'm missing things left and right...

Hi Roland, it's true, we tweaked a few parts here and there, but the real redesign of the frontpage is still under development. Is there something in particular that you are missing?
Congrats on the successful migration :2thumbsup
One thing: Could you bring back the icons depicting the e-reader device etc. of each forum sections?
Alexander Turcic 06-03-2007, 08:28 AM Congrats on the successful migration :2thumbsup
One thing: Could you bring back the icons depicting the e-reader device etc. of each forum sections?
Absolutely. Not everything has already been updated, we'll do it in the next two days.
mogui 06-03-2007, 08:34 AM It is nice to have MR back. It all looks good.
But here in China I was awake during the surgery! :disappoin
As they say here: Aiiyo!
Alexander Turcic 06-03-2007, 08:36 AM But here in China I was awake during the surgery! :disappoin
We tried to hurry, but some complication arose. No worries, patient is in good condition ;)
I am curious since you are from China... can you feel any improvement in connectivity?
Antartica 06-03-2007, 08:53 AM It looks great, but have a little request:
Change that width="960" to width="100%" in the template HTML..
Now the pages have a table with the 'width="960" ', that makes all pages to have horizontal scroll for me (what's the problem with 'width=100%'?, that works in every display..), using 800x600.
That is, I usually read mobileread in the HTPC, attached to an standard PAL TV, with the PC using 800x600 resolution (which is similar enough to 768x576 of the TV to not lose too many pixels, and be readable).
Bob Russell 06-03-2007, 08:56 AM Am I imagining things, or do our own posts not show up in the recent post queries anymore? Not a problem because there is a specific query for our own new posts in the drop down for "new posts", but was curious.
Bob Russell 06-03-2007, 09:01 AM Okay, I can answer my own question because I just discovered Quick Links that has the "Todays Posts" query. Wonderful! I like the other quck links also!
Steven Lyle Jordan 06-03-2007, 09:02 AM Oooooo... I wanna see the garden! ;)
Yeah, when I noticed that there was no "MobileRead" logo next to the icon, I knew you still have a ways to go. Can't wait to see the final final!

Rant accepted ;) We'll add a "liquid" layout you can choose. In one or two days...
Leaping Gnome 06-03-2007, 10:34 AM In forum software it is really preferred to have the name/avatar/poster information off to the side so it does not interrupt the flow of the thread. It is hard to read a string of replies when in between each reply you have to scroll past all of this information. This is pretty much a usability standard in today's modern-era forums. Is it possible to change this back?
Also, it does not seem the front page gives you a popup when you have a new PM any more, it would be nice if the "X unread message!" link that shows at the top was made to stand out in some way, bolded red for example.
It would also be nice if in linear mode (the mode any non-masochist uses) the quick reply button defaulted as a reply to either the original post or the last post in the thread. Just someway to make it active by default. For linear users it doesn't make much sense to make them have to pick a post they are replying to, to them all the posts are in one string.
yvanleterrible 06-03-2007, 11:57 AM Great Work Alex!
I liked looking over for the tons of tiny details.
A good feature is the display menu choice.
Question: What is that 'Report' icon next to Karma? I don't dare try it in case it blows up somebody or something.
Suggestion: Would there be a way to personnalize the Smilie layout and put the ones we use the most? Because of time considerations, I resorted to learning a handful by heart and type them in manually.
mogui 06-03-2007, 11:59 AM I am curious since you are from China... can you feel any improvement in connectivity?
It is too soon to say. Response is good. I will reply in a few days if I notice anything . . .
Acataloger 06-03-2007, 12:15 PM This may not be related to the migration, but I decided to ask anyway. Today I tried to upload a custom avatar. A message came up saying that animated images may not be uploaded.
So how did AprilBeginnings, yvanleterrible, and others acquire their nifty animated avatars?
CommanderROR 06-03-2007, 01:05 PM I must admit that the "name ABOVE" is inferior in my eyes to the "name NEXT TO" the postings.
The width is also a bit of a pain for me since I now have a long strip in the middle of the screen and lots of unused space left and right on my 1280x1024 monitor. I don#t want to imagine what will happen once I get my widescreen 22" next week...:behead:
mogui 06-03-2007, 02:39 PM I wrote a post and "saved" it. The page appeared only showing the first paragraph of my post. There were two paragraphs missing.
I hit the "back" button and found my edited post ready to save. I "saved" it and got a message that I was trying to save a duplicate of a post I had already submitted. I hit "back" again and copied the post to the clipboard.
Then I "saved" it again, got the error message and was redirected to the post that had been saved incorrectly. I edited the incorrect post and pasted in the missing text. When I saved it, it looked OK.
Then I selected the thread again and saw that my post was missing the text that had been missing during the previous error. This time I hit the "reload" button in Firefox and the missing text reappeared.

It is hard to read a string of replies when in between each reply you have to scroll past all of this information. This is pretty much a usability standard in today's modern-era forums. I agree, most forums today use the "modern" look you see right now. And now I see that some of you (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=72451#post72451) prefer the "classic" look where postbits (username, userinfo, etc.) is shown off to the left. Consequently, we will re-implement the classic look again and make it an option to choose one.
Also, it does not seem the front page gives you a popup when you have a new PM any more, it would be nice if the "X unread message!" link that shows at the top was made to stand out in some way, bolded red for example.
This is most probably a bug. I am going to look into this in the next two days. Thanks for reporting!
It sense in so far that people who actually use the threaded mode (anyone?) to which posts people in linear mode actually replied to. But I agree it is less usable, and when I assume that post people don't read in threaded mode, I may just as well turn back the requirement to pick a post to reply. DONE. ;)
Alexander Turcic 06-03-2007, 02:59 PM Great Work Alex!
I liked looking over for the tons of tiny details.
A good feature is the display menu choice.
Glad you like it. Yes there are quite a lot of small changes involved in the upgrade ;)
Question: What is that 'Report' icon next to Karma? I don't dare try it in case it blows up somebody or something.
It allows you to report a questionable post to all moderators of MobileRead. We would receive an e-mail with the report.
Suggestion: Would there be a way to personnalize the Smilie layout and put the ones we use the most? Because of time considerations, I resorted to learning a handful by heart and type them in manually.
I will look into it. I don't think there is such an option, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be possible.

Indeed, there is a new options to allow enabling/disabling of animated avatars in the new forum software. Enabled now. Sorry about that :smack:

Both items will be addressed as others have brought it up already. We will offer a liquid design ("100%") as well as the classic postbit view again (userinfo to the left) for everyone who preferred the old look ;)
I need just a few more days to work on it.

That shouldn't be and sounds definitely wrong. mogui, should it happens again, could you PM me and point me to the post in question?
Moonraker 06-03-2007, 03:05 PM Why are two words in my message reply asterisked out?

They are probably not... to most ;) I turned off the offensive word check for now (it simply contains too many words where one can argue whether or not they are offensive).
Adam B. 06-03-2007, 03:24 PM Rant accepted ;) We'll add a "liquid" layout you can choose. In one or two days...
+1 Except I have the opposite problem. My resolution is 1920x1080. It's quite annoying to only use 1/3rd of my available screen area.
Leaping Gnome 06-03-2007, 08:23 PM Thanks, good to have this box active again. :)

taylor 06-04-2007, 06:03 AM http://www.mobileread.com/avantgo/comics.shtml sees unreachable now. I don't know if this is related to the move, but I think it worked right up until the move.

True. We don't want to host this feature on MR anymore, but I will give you a link once it's moved to another domain. Good catch :D
yvanleterrible 06-04-2007, 09:21 AM An other idea... Don't rush for it, I mean put it on the backburner for a while.
In the Hybrid display mode, when you browse in the hierachy, at any point if you click on a post, it brings you to it ... but only it. I would be nice if it brought you to it but with all the others around it too, just like a link in a long Wiki page for example. That would give an other dimension of browsing that is quicker than scrolling.
PS. An other helpful tool idea.
The blue menu bar could follow you everywhere you go and stay just at the top of your screen or one button called 'Top' could do the same and follow you. Once you click on it, it brings you to the blue menu bar at the top.
I imagine those would entail heavy programming, sorry bout that!
paulkbiba 06-04-2007, 09:36 AM Just gave your makeover a mention on Palm Addict. Hopefully it will bring you some new traffic.
Paul
astra 06-04-2007, 09:49 AM I had to leave for one week only and look what happened!?
Everything is up-side-down!
What are we gonna do? :smack:
Ah, probably it is a new design :p
Anyway, thanks to all admins for trying to please us all :2thumbsup
Alexander Turcic 06-04-2007, 10:36 AM Thanks Paul for the mentioning, this is very kind of you!
And thanks to everyone for your patience. Sure changes are not always for the better, and we all have to learn. But I am willing to learn and I will always listen to you guys to make the best of MobileRead ;)
So for a starter, our traditional postbit is back, where the user info is shown off to the left and the actual postings to the right. A lot of you guys preferred this way (and honestly, I do prefer it too ;)).
Should you prefer the newer look that we installed yesterday, you can go to your control panel options (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) and change "Postbit Style" back to "modern".
More changes in the next few days (promised).
NatCh 06-04-2007, 11:10 AM It's already smokin', Alex. Great work, and thank you!
I especially like the fact that it doesn't mark threads as read unless I actually read them, makes it much easier to pick up reading new posts when I get interrupted before I get done going through them all.
UncleDuke 06-04-2007, 11:34 AM as for me, i like the look
pl0ni 06-04-2007, 12:04 PM None of the avantgo channels are working for me anymore. I grab a few of them on a daily basis and will miss them if they are removed (esp. boingboing).
nevsf 06-04-2007, 05:21 PM The mobile version of mobile read (www.mobileread.com/mobile) is dead. Was this intentional? I used to read it all the time on my Treo...
Thanks for the great site!

Excellent, thanks!
sUnShInE 06-04-2007, 05:58 PM Alex is actually a super-secret machine that powers the interwebs.
Don't tell anyone though. It's our little secret. ;)
Bob Russell 06-04-2007, 08:00 PM I really love the traditional style post that you returned, and even more with the new upgraded look. It's very nice, and the old style makes me feel so much more at home! Everyone should stand up and cheer for Alex, with all the amazing work he does. You'd think he was a professional web master. He's definitely an incredible guy. Unless you know, as Sunshine pointed out, that "Alex is actually a super-secret machine that powers the interwebs." ;)
Steven Lyle Jordan 06-04-2007, 08:31 PM Yo! Alex...
Hip Hip...
Hooray!

...good job, dude.
Alexander Turcic 06-05-2007, 02:44 AM You honor me, thanks so much!
Hey, oh my, the liquid design is back as well. If you prefer it over the fixed layout, go to your Control Panel Options (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) and change the Forum Skin under Miscellaneous Options.
Gavrahil 06-05-2007, 03:25 AM One other thing that seems not to be there any more are the RSS feeds for a single forum. Before you could create an RSS feed for every sub-forum you wanted, for example the Irex Iliad with all its sub-forums. That would be nice again... I just can't seem to find it anymore.

Thanks for the hint. If your browser or feed reader has autodiscovery, it will still detect individual feeds for each section. But unlike before - and this we will "fix" as well - these feeds don't include sub-forums right now. We will also bring back a single page showing all available feeds.
Alexander Turcic 06-05-2007, 07:06 AM Let's see...
In the Hybrid display mode, when you browse in the hierachy, at any point if you click on a post, it brings you to it ... but only it. I would be nice if it brought you to it but with all the others around it too, just like a link in a long Wiki page for example. The hybrid mode is kinda tricky. Currently, when you click on a post within a thread in hybrid mode, the currently selected post plus posts that are direct replies are shown at the bottom of the page. Example:
a
\
b
|
c
|
d
\
e
|
f
When you click on a, all posts will be shown. If you click on b, only b will be shown. If you click on c, only c will be shown. If you click on d, d and e will be shown -- meaning d and someone's reply to d (=e). If you click on e or f, again only e or f are shown. You can test it with this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=58765#poststop). Your suggestion sounds great, but I am not sure if it can be implemented at the moment. But I will keep an eye on it!
The blue menu bar could follow you everywhere you go and stay just at the top of your screen or one button called 'Top' could do the same and follow you. Once you click on it, it brings you to the blue menu bar at the top.
That would involve some javascript/xhtml coding. Not really my expertise, but if someone is willing to help out... ;)
Thanks for all the hard work, Alex!
Another suggestion: On the frontpage, where the latest attachments are listed, could you exclude e-book uploads, and perhaps make another news section dedicated to latest e-book uploads?
Alexander Turcic 06-06-2007, 03:47 AM Thanks for all the hard work, Alex!
Another suggestion: On the frontpage, where the latest attachments are listed, could you exclude e-book uploads, and perhaps make another news section dedicated to latest e-book uploads?
That would be easily possible. Give us a few days ;)
Adam B. 06-06-2007, 01:34 PM It could be me, but I don't think the automatic resize is working for editor uploaded images...
Wizard-mag 06-07-2007, 02:40 AM It also seems that there was a temporary issue with the front page RSS feed, which also included some non-front page posts during the Sunday, but that now seems to be fixed.

Exactly, this issue has been discovered and fixed earlier, thanks for reporting though ;) Also, when you subscribe to a subforum, the feed will now also include the subforum's children forums again.

Thanks Adam for the report. The PHP function getimagesize() always returns false with our new PHP installation. I am looking into this.

Hi Liviux, yes, it'll be back. Please give me a couple of days. I'll be putting the script on another server.

That's mainly why I was suggesting a menu bar that could follow your movements through the page or just a button.
Maybe there could be a simple 'Up' button on every post next to the 'Karma' or 'Quote' ones ?
Steven Lyle Jordan 06-08-2007, 10:09 PM I think Alex was looking ahead to when folks have created and uploaded books for other formats/devices too. :wink2:
Good point: If I decided to convert Metropolis to other formats besides LRF (like for eReader, iSilo, MobiPocket, and MS Reader), where would I put them, guys?

Hi dharris. You should definitely see the images. I am also using Bloglines and I can see the images:

When you signed up for the feed, Bloglines has different display settings. (Default - checked, Complete Entries, Summaries if Available, Titles). Can you try to change it to Complete Entries perhaps?

Thanks for the report, Jon. I have a guess that it's related to the php opcode cache (APC) we are using. It's very hard to debug because of its random nature, but I am working on it.

Wonderful! :grin2:
Azayzel 06-09-2007, 06:20 PM Ok, I think I've isolated the bug I've run into enough to be able to duplicate it, though it wasn't on purpose.
Problem: Reply is dumped when quoting a response.
Details: Generally this happens when I click on "Quote," type my response and, at the end, add "Smiles." On prior accurance the entire response was dumped and only part of the original quote was kept. Just a few minutes ago it dumped the entire response again and left the quote intact, but prompted me with the message "Response is too short." I pasted what I had typed again, and it did the same thing on two additional attempts. When I tried again the fourth time, I chopped off the quote and it posted properly, so I had to re-edit the post to include the quote. This has happened to me on several occassions, so I've gotten pretty good at saving my response before clicking submit.

BTW Is it me, or does this "not" look like two thumbs up? -> :2thumbsup
Bob Russell 06-09-2007, 09:17 PM I don't know if this helps (especially at this point), but in the past on the old version if I lost my reply text, I was often pleasantly surprised to find it was nicely recoverable if I used the "Back" arrow on the browser.
Alexander Turcic 06-10-2007, 03:46 AM I've noticed a bug in the upgraded forum. Occationally when it goes to a new page the page will display blank. But when I refresh, it displays fine. I'm using the latest Firefox.
Jon
FIXED. This one was a PITA to locate! The blank screens were caused by a bug in the updated forum software we're using. In particular, a plugin that was executed via a cronjob (thus the "random" nature of this bug) would output raw HTML causing all subsequent HTML output requests to fail :smack:... Since the script was only executed every 10 minutes or so, once it was executed, a browser refresh was all that was required to solve the problem. Anyways, no more blank screens from here... :crowngrin
NatCh 06-10-2007, 07:27 AM Hooray!
JSWolf 06-10-2007, 10:34 AM I don't know if this is a bug or I'm not reading it correctly...
When I click the multi-quote this message button and then click quote, all the quotes in the message no longer show up. I would like to be able to quote a message and have the quotes show up as well as the original message.
Jon
NatCh 06-10-2007, 01:38 PM That's not a new change, the old system did the same thing. It would be cool if it worked the way you're describing, though.
Alexander Turcic 06-10-2007, 01:59 PM From what I understand, the reason why this is not done the way you describe it, Jon, is to avoid quotes being too nested.
I'll see if there is something to tweak this "feature".

So what does the multi-quote button next to the quote message button actually do?
NatCh 06-10-2007, 03:35 PM It selects more than one post to be quoted in a reply. Took me a bit to work out how to use it: click the multi-quote button in two (or more) posts, and then click the "New Reply" button at the the end of the thread. Both/All he posts you selected will be quoted in the reply box. :nice:

Thanks! That might do what I want until the forum is fixed to do it the way it should.
JSWolf 06-11-2007, 12:47 PM Two little gripes...
If I am the originator of a thread, when I edit the message, I'd like to be able to change the topic of the entire thread, and not just the subtopic for that post.
Also, if I made a post, I'd like to be able to delete it if I choose to.
JSWolf 06-13-2007, 08:43 AM I'm finding today that MobileRead is taking a long time at times to connect and I'm getting a lot of timeouts. This started yeserday with a timeout that lasted maybe 30 min and today it's not good.

I am sorry for the timeouts everyone must have had yesterday and also this morning. We were installing an iSCSI-SAN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_area_network) storage device (for backup purposes) which, beside other stuff, involved adding another network card. Didn't work properly after the first time so we had to reboot one more time this morning.
Other than that I hope you have a good connection to the site. You should experience a considerable improvement to the "old" MobileRead which was hosted on a less powerful server.
If you have connectivity problems, feel free to PM me a log of your traceroute to www.mobileread.com.

To be honest, I think some of the problem may have been my router. I reset both the router and the modem and so far so good.
Jon
P.S. I am still getting some timeouts even still. I did some tracerouts and it seems like the issue may be at level 3 in New York and/or Washington.
NatCh 06-13-2007, 10:30 AM I saw the stoppage of and on for an hour or so, early yesterday evening (CST), but it's been fine since then. :nice:

I am having to refresh sometimes today to get it to work.
Alexander Turcic 06-16-2007, 09:50 AM JSWolf, are you using IE by any chance? We discovered some HTML code that caused IE to display our pages very slowly. :smash: It's now been fixed.
JSWolf 06-18-2007, 05:05 AM I use Firefox. I have the lasted non-beta edition (2.0.0.4)

Do you still have problems?
JSWolf 06-18-2007, 11:09 AM Problems seem to have vanished. Thanks!

rbentley101 07-09-2007, 04:32 PM True. We don't want to host this feature on MR anymore, but I will give you a link once it's moved to another domain. Good catch :D
Alex,
Any update on when and where this may return?
