View Full Version : Writer2ePub new releases
eBookLuke 12-18-2010, 05:32 PM Hi all,
in this thread I will post the announcements for new W2E releases!
the current release is 1.1.10
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14712909/macro/w2e/Writer2Epub-200x120.jpg (http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/it/project/Writer2ePub)
Writer2ePub is an OpenOffice.org extension that creates an ePub file from any document openable by the OOo Word Processor.
Just simply one click, you can obtain a well formatted, easy readable ePub file from almost any document.
What is Writer2ePub?
W2E is an ePub creator. Simply write your document with the OOo Word Processor and W2E will make an ePub file using the best traditional typographic rules, by applying a predefined style sheet (CSS). If you need a good ePub document and you can use the OOo Writer Word Processor, W2E is your tool.
What Writer2ePub is not?
W2E is not a simple file converter. It does not just convert an existing document to ePub. If you need to obtain a pure wysiwyg ePub file, W2E is not for you. Please look at Calibre (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=166) or other OOo extensions available on the Internet to do this kind of jobs.
Neither is W2E an ePub editor, please look at Sigil (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=203) or other similar product if you need to edit and modify an existing ePub.
Who can use Writer2ePub?
W2E is intended for occasional users and professional use. The occasional user can create an high quality epub without worrying about the source document quality, while professional can create an easy editable, well structured and valid ePub file.
Installation
Just double click on the dowloaded file, it will install or replace the old W2E version.
Otherwise, please open the Extension Manager from the Tools menu and add the extension from there.
Once installed, on opening a new writer document you will find a small toolbar with three green icons.
Use
Simply press the first icon, and an ePub will be created in the same folder of the original file.
The icon with the blue mark is useful to add or edit the metadata information (title, author and so on).
The last icon with the red mark is to modify the preference. In a normal use you don't need to modify these settings.
Disclaimer:
Writer2ePub is a software tool written by non-professional programmers.
The author and all the collaborators are not responsible in any way for direct or indirect damages caused by W2E to your data, your software, your hard disk, your computer, your person, your home, your town, your country, your planet or your universe.
Please use it carefully and at your own risk!

You should mention the version number.

I ran into a problem with 1.1.10 so I check here and saw that you have a new version. I installed it but now I can not edit the CSS macro. I need to tweak the style sheet a bit. Not a Macro person so any suggestions as to why I'm not allowed to edit would be helpful..
Thank you...
John..

No joy...
I removed it.. closed OO, Opened and installed the extension, Closed OO again, opened and then tried to edit CSS.. Can not edit..
Really strange..
jbmoore 06-17-2011, 10:31 AM Found the problem..
When you install an extension is ask if you want it "just for me" or for others as well (multi-user). I had selected the latter and that locked it for editing.
Back in shape again..
Anavim 07-10-2011, 12:53 PM Thank you very much, great applet! :2thumbsup
BTW ask whether the "MyBookCleaner" is the successor to "MyTXTcleaner" or doing something else? On Your site no wider description.

Hi Anavim,
MyBookCleaner is an extension I create for myself and I use it to correct a scanned book.
More of the options are useful only in Italian, like replacing E' with È, other are usable everywhere, like removing spaces at the beginning or at the end of the paragraphs.
I plan to improve it, as soon as I will find some spare time…
Luke
Anavim 07-15-2011, 03:52 AM Thank you for the info.
Your "MyTXTcleaner" is also useful for the correction of scanned and converted books :)
Writer2epub is very clever and useful tool! For my uses, in many cases better than Calibre.
If you manage to earn some extra functionality: font embedding - it will be for many people a great handy tool.
I greet and thank you again for this plugin !

Thanks to you, Anavim! :)
In the future W2E will embed the fonts as an option, but now I'm working to redesign the extension.
I wish to add the capability to use multiple CSS (style sheet) instead of the one W2E imposes to the user.
Moreover, W2E will manage custom CSS, with fonts and personal styles, and there will be a wisiwig editor for styles.

So why is the OpenOffice extensions site linked in your original post still showing 1.1.10 and refusing to even let me download that? Perhaps you can provide a current, working link. The other one you posted a ways back goes to a redirect to your blog. I did eventually find the current version on your blog, but I think a direct link would be good.
eBookLuke 10-07-2011, 03:42 PM So why is the OpenOffice extensions site linked in your original post still showing 1.1.10 and refusing to even let me download that?
The OpenOffice repository has big problems. I cannot access to it, most of the time the site is down or really slow.
As soon as possible I will remove all reference from that site.
Anyway, you can get the current version at my blog, or even by update the estension from the extension manager in OOo.

readx 10-09-2011, 03:28 AM Luke,
wouldn't it be possible to switch the extension over to the LibreOffice Repository? (see Blog entry (http://blog.documentfoundation.org/2011/09/12/libreoffice-launches-extension-and-templates-repository-for-public-beta-test/))
I know it's still in Beta, but it is already more reliable as the OO-Repo has ever been.

Michael_ZZ 01-11-2012, 07:22 AM Hello Luke.
I've just installed the latest version of W2E 1.1.15 but found that the German translation contains some errors. in detail I've made the following:
got rid of the many \u unicode codes
corrected some translations
clarified some translations
added some missing translations
added many help texts with additional information
corrected errors (e.g. in the "metadata from file name" template A, T, P and Y must not be translated for the feature to work properly!)
Is there a way to send you the new file (if you're interested, that is)?

I'm VERY interested in the correct translation. Send the file, as usual, to writer2epub[at]gmail.com
Thanks

P.S.: would you like to translate also the user manual at http://lukesblog.it/wiki ? ;)
Thanks

dsaronin 05-07-2012, 09:42 PM Hi Luke, Thank you for writing Writer2ePub LO plugin. It is wonderful tool. I have a couple of small issues that I would like to have you consider for future versions.
1) I try to use .png images, but Writer2ePub always converts to jpeg; I thought epub spec also supports .png. Maybe Writer2ePub could support .png?
2) Writer2ePub *always* scales the jpg image down by 72%. It is distorting image quality. If I have a large image of 1092px wide, it scales down to 784px; if I first use a photo editor and correctly scale my image to 784px before inserting it into document, then Writer2ePub scales it again down to 562px. I would like to have more control over image size and scaling when using Writer2ePub. Because I want to charge money for my ePub book but right now image quality is so poor. It will be too much work to use Sigil to change hundreds of images everytime I run Writer2ePub!
3) Writer2ePub seems to assume what the size and width of the ebook will be, and scales the images down to that. I want more control: I want to use OO/LO page format to determine size and have Writer2ePub respect that size and not scale the images.
4) In Writer2ePub preferences, I have checked: "keep working files" and they show up. I want to be able to make changes to the stylesheet and have Writer2ePub use those changes in the stylesheet in the working files and NOT create a new strylesheet each time I run Writer2ePub.
thank you
eBookLuke 05-08-2012, 12:50 AM Hi,
you're right…
I'm currently working at 1.2 version, with many improvement, and image management is one of these.
1) I try to use .png images, but Writer2ePub always converts to jpeg; I thought epub spec also supports .png. Maybe Writer2ePub could support .png?
I have a problem to recognize real image format in .odt documents. If you put a .bmp image with the extension .jpg this image will be treated as .jpeg, crashing W2E or generating an unusable ePub. So I choose in the first version to convert all images in jpeg.
In the new version I will add a checkbox, "retain original images", so the images will be copied as are, without changes. Obviously, in this case is user responsibility to ensure tu use the right image format…
2) Writer2ePub *always* scales the jpg image down by 72%. It is distorting image quality.
Same as above: the image conversion process in OOo/LibO is a little bit buggy. With the new checkbox you will solve all problems :)
3) Writer2ePub seems to assume what the size and width of the ebook will be, and scales the images down to that. I want more control: I want to use OO/LO page format to determine size and have Writer2ePub respect that size and not scale the images.
This point is not so clear for me… ePub files are created for a large variety of screen sizes. So the text, and even the images, must adapt to the available space. I choose to manage the image dimension in this way:
– for images inserted along the text, the width relative to the page is retained. In other words, if the image in the .odt document gets 50% of the page, in the ePub willl be 50% of the display, regardless the dimension of the display (this behaviour is important to retain the graphic balance of the page, and to avoid to make the images huge in small displays). This is dome by add a width="xx%"> in the <img> tag and is easily editable.
– for images that are in height 80% or more of the page, these retain the relative height instead of width. This preserves the "full page" images and scale them to the display. Is obtained with height="xx%" in the <img> tag.
I want to be able to make changes to the stylesheet and have Writer2ePub use those changes in the stylesheet in the working files and NOT create a new strylesheet each time I run Writer2ePub.
If you need a personal CSS you can change the W2E code as described in the manual:
http://lukesblog.it/wiki/index.php?title=Advanced#How_to_edit_the_W2E_code
Don't forget to copy in a safe place the modified CSS, because it will be rewritten when the extension updates.
In the future I wish use an external CSS sheet, and the user will be able to edit the standard CSS or use an alternate one. But at the moment this is not a priority for me.
I'm also studying for a visual style editor inside W2E, but it needs a lot of work (help from experienced programmers is appreciated! :) )
I will send to you the first stable beta 1.2 with the new image handling as soon available, if you have some suggestions to implement a better solution please feel free to contact me!
Thanks
