I'll try and maintain the first message in this thread as an up-to-date list of what's available for download from this forum. Sorry - I know it would be a lot better if these were hyperlinks, but that's too much hard work!

If there's anything that needs adding or changing, please add it in a message to the end of the thread. I'll make the changes, and then delete the message.

Thanks!

Sorry, no. This is an index of books available for download from this forum.

Thank you,

Sorry, no. This is an index of books available for download from this forum.
However, it points out another thing we need. How about a sticky thread of DRM-free book sites suitable for use with the reader. I'd like a summary of the genre of books and an indication of real support for the Reader versus just books you can fix in BD.

HarryT
05-21-2007, 08:25 AM
That's a good idea. If you'd like to write such a thread in the "Reader Content" sub-forum I'll make it "Sticky" for you.

NatCh
05-21-2007, 08:26 AM
Nice idea, RSaunders. Do you think that would be better as a sticky thread, or perhaps as a Wiki section? Just tossin' the notion out there. :nice:

HarryT
05-21-2007, 08:35 AM
I get the impression that the Wiki is better for "unchanging" information, but perhaps a sticky thread is better for something to which relatively frequent changes will be made? I guess it depends which category this would fall into. My "gut feeling" (which could be completely wrong) is that perhaps this would tend towards the latter? What do you think?

I just tried something that works like a charm. If you see a book you like here. Just use the "Search' Function on the blue toolbar at the top of the page and type in the book you want. It will give you a link to that page to download the book.

Robert Marquard

No. A Wiki is precisely for changing content. Especially for such lists which change structure over time. Soon enough this list will be too long to be navigable.
Just have a look at the Project Gutenberg Bookshelf.

I see this getting out of hand already. I think a full website with Wiki and download options is needed. Something like LibriVox or manybooks.

HarryT

Hi Roy,

Yes, that was exactly the way this index was intended to be used. I will add that information to the index page. Thanks for pointing it out!

Are you volunteering to create such a site for us, Robert? :happy2:

Yes, you're absolutely right, of course, that would be a good solution. I think personally, though, that what we have here is working pretty well. The nice thing about it being a part of MR is that we can talk about the books as well as just upload and download them.

Alexander Turcic
05-21-2007, 09:19 AM
I agree with both of you.

- We need to organize
- The forum works great because it allows for immediate discussions

To me the most ideal solution seems to add an automated index that would list all the books (either sorted alphabetically or sorted by date) with links to the downloads and other information (like # of downloads, etc.).

HarryT
05-21-2007, 09:24 AM
Totally agree, Alex. If an automated index could be created that would be absolutely wonderful.

Great work Harry. I had started to put together a Wiki addition that linked to the original posts but it just kept expanding and I never came anywhere near finishing it. I do agree that the Wiki is the place the index and hopefully the links should be.

I've just added Charlotte Bronte's 'Shirley'.

I have a suggestion to make the index even more useful then it already is. I suggest that each title of the book or books be converted to a link to link directly to the thread that contains the attachment of the book(s) in question. That would mean all we do is look at the list, find the book we want, click the link, and voila there we are at the thread.

This was covered in the early post
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=70520&postcount=2

It's a great idea, but even maintaining the list is a lost of work, so I think we just have to praise Harry for what he's giving us, and maybe Alex will work a miracle with an automated version that includes links. :)

Thanks Patricia. No need to tell me about everything; I just look at what's new when I log on in the morning. Just give me a nudge if a few days go by and I've not added something!

Cross-post from here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=70900#post70900):

OK, we hacked a bit of a code and this is the first result:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebooks.php

Any comments are welcomed of course. Our ultimate goal would be to separate authors from book titles, but right now it's virtually impossible -- unless we make the rules for titles even more stringent. Right now there are simply too many possible variations to allow for a foolproof separate indexing of authors + book titles.

If we didn't have the new book index, I was going to take the original index message and add in the links. No need now. We have something even better then that.

Alexander Turcic
05-23-2007, 01:39 PM
It's also updated instantly, which I think is nice.

Since we will also add an e-book upload section for the iLiad reader (and possibly for other readers in the future), we may have to add another column indicating in which category each book was uploaded to.

Alex, a great addition to the site. Perhaps you could add a link to it from the front page?

I'd suggest to move it to the general "Sony Portable Reader" category to keep it for reference purposes.

Ah, well, the price of progress. :smug:

With the nice automatically updated list from Alex, I think it's time to just close this thread. (Feel free to reopen it if you think it should live on.)

The link for the index is available in the e-books link at the top of the page, or here...
