View Full Version : Nook Color first hands-on! Nathan Campos 11-11-2010, 06:49 PM Hmm, I was checking out Engadget site and I saw this article about the new Nook Color. It's really impressive. Take a look at the video: http://engt.co/cyy0kT daffy4u 11-11-2010, 07:06 PM I liked the desktop with the covers of books and magazines grouped on it. I'm not on the LCD wagon but I see a lot of people going for this (why spend all that money for an iPad). rcuadro 11-11-2010, 07:18 PM I am actually looking forward to seeing this once it makes it to the stores so I can get to play with it Nathan Campos 11-11-2010, 07:25 PM LCD have a lot of problems, they hurt your eyes, it's impossible to see something while on the sun and other stuff... Donnageddon 11-11-2010, 07:35 PM (why spend all that money for an iPad). For fiction books? Probably not much reason. But for magazines, PDFs, apps, and general real estate, plenty of reasons. LCD have a lot of problems, they hurt your eyes, Oh boy... :smack: daffy4u 11-11-2010, 07:39 PM For fiction books? Probably not much reason. But for magazines, PDFs, apps, and general real estate, plenty of reasons. It seems to be quite serviceable to me for magazines, and PDFs. Since it's an Android tablet, there will be apps as well (after hacking I think I read). The price difference for a little bit more real estate with the iPad is too much, IMO. Nathan Campos 11-11-2010, 07:56 PM Oh boy... :smack: What's the problem? Donnageddon 11-11-2010, 08:08 PM It seems to be quite serviceable to me for magazines, and PDFs. Since it's an Android tablet, there will be apps as well (after hacking I think I read). The price difference for a little bit more real estate with the iPad is too much, IMO. The real estate is actually twice the screen size on the iPad, and magazines and PDF's are just on the cutrting edge with the Ipad. I do not see a 7 inch screen being a pleasant reading experience for those. As for apps, the hacking ain't happened yet. And it is after all hacking. Donnageddon 11-11-2010, 08:09 PM What's the problem? No problem, Nathan, it's just I hate to see that poor old dead horse dragged out for another beating. :) daffy4u 11-11-2010, 08:26 PM The real estate is actually twice the screen size on the iPad, and magazines and PDF's are just on the cutrting edge with the Ipad. I use Readability with a lot of online content, and their article mode looked similar. You could still look at all of the pretty pictures and focus on the writing separately. That may not be perfect but I thought it was pretty good. As far as hacking, I said I thought I read that but I could be wrong (which so very unusual for me :p). Hacking is not necessarily a bad thing (iPads and iPods get jailbroken for more functionality). If the iPad works for you, great. If the nook color works for someone else, great. I won't be purchasing either one but have no problems with those who do. JSWolf 11-11-2010, 08:41 PM Why was this posted in the Amazon forum and not the nook forum? All are great products. This is how I use these toys for reading: Nook: read ePub books only (and used to read eNews on it) Kindle 3: read mobi books, and enews from Calibre. I have to admit that I'm now hooked to Kindle 3 than Nook, due to its higher contrast, faster speed, thinner, and less weight. With Duokan firmware, I can read ePub on my Kindle 3, but there are still some flaws on rendering ePub. iPad: read magazines, some enews which I need to see photos in color, large-sized pdf. It's a bit distracted when I use iPad because I tend to check email, twitter, websites from time to time, instead of just reading books on it. Now I usually carry both Kindle 3 and iPad in same netbook case. If my wife says I can only keep one toy, iPad is definitely my choice due to its versatility. If she allows me two, I'll count Kindle 3 in. Nook Color, IMO, is like a Frankenstein product, a mix and match of ereader and tablet where both features are compromised. For people with resources to keep a device for every purpose, Nook Color to those are viewed as a compromise. For someone like me who can't afford such a luxury, the Nook Color priced at $250 is the best of two worlds. I do not want to shell out additional $250 for an iPad which provides features that I don't need and another $100 to $150 for a dedicated e-ink reader. I do not read in direct sunlight and I do not have problems reading books on LCD screen. Besides that, the size of iPad to me is a deal maker since I can't fit it in my purse and I don't like to carry any more bags around other than my purse. nabrum 11-16-2010, 11:58 PM LCD have a lot of problems, they hurt your eyes, it's impossible to see something while on the sun and other stuff... They sure don't hurt my eyes. And they don't seem to hurt yours much since you're on a PC. Eye strain/LCD is a myth. One can have eye strain from reading a DTB for too long. ColdSun 11-17-2010, 12:21 AM No problem, Nathan, it's just I hate to see that poor old dead horse dragged out for another beating. :) No doubt. The more I read and see about this device I feel it is perfect for me. I have been searching for years for a high quality LCD reading device. I can't wait until it gets here. RockdaMan 11-17-2010, 02:38 AM The reviews are certainly impressive. I'm going to wait until Amazon releases it's LCD Android device for comparison before jumping in though. akira28 11-17-2010, 09:08 AM The reviews are certainly impressive. I'm going to wait until Amazon releases it's LCD Android device for comparison before jumping in though. The device is indeed impressive. Perhaps someone might find a way to put the Kindle app on it too, after all, it is android. jhempel24 11-17-2010, 09:27 AM They sure don't hurt my eyes. And they don't seem to hurt yours much since you're on a PC. Eye strain/LCD is a myth. One can have eye strain from reading a DTB for too long. No, it's not a myth, I don't read long term on my pc, and the screen is MUCH MUCH wider, which means your eye has a wider field of view for the lcd, the close quarters LCD where your eye has to focus for a long period of time HURTS MY EYES. I don't hold my LCD eReader 3ft from my eyes.. I bought one 3 weeks ago and returned it within 5 days, it hurt my eyes, I got a headache, and got very tired very quickly, so to say it's a myth is incorrect. There are hundreds of people out there that can read on an LCD screen, and there are hundreds of people out there that can't..... I think it's time to call the MythBusters. ColdSun 11-17-2010, 11:27 AM Not again.... I think it is time to drop this subject and return to the topic. There is no right side, its just a matter of choice. In other news, according to UPS my Nook Color will be here tomorrow! daffy4u 11-17-2010, 11:41 AM They sure don't hurt my eyes. And they don't seem to hurt yours much since you're on a PC. For me, reading on a PC is a very different experience than reading a book. My PC reading is more like "burst" reading. For instance, reading this forum or even blogs, I mostly read short bursts of text (most posts are short). If I want read a long post, I will read a bit, let my eyes wander then read more. If the post is one giant paragraph, I won't even try because it freaks my eyes out. Reading on an eink screen or a paper book allows longer straight through reading. Now if the formatting is really bad on an ebook, I'll give up on it as well. I personally, cannot read books on my computer. LOL!!! As a side note, I did find a good way to make my eyes comfortable with my Droid X, included a non-glare screen.....but I will have to see this in action in person before I plunk down the cash! daffy4u 11-17-2010, 01:19 PM :offtopic:If people want to continue this discussion, please go to the News Section, under topic "e-ink vs. LCD". No, but I've had my say. ColdSun 11-17-2010, 01:54 PM No, but I've had my say. Who hasn't on this particular subject? ;) :chinscratch: This is why some of us are tired of seeing it over and over. I don't think anyone meant to be rude when asking not to talk about it, so please accept my apologies if my comments came off that way. :o daffy4u 11-17-2010, 02:02 PM Who hasn't on this particular subject? ;) :chinscratch: This is why some of us are tired of seeing it over and over. I had not read the following posts when I responded, so I had not seen your post about dropping the subject (your request was general and not specific). |
