View Full Version : 2.9.5 update failure ElaHuguet 04-25-2007, 04:25 PM Stuck on step 1, I rebooted, screen went dark (not quite black) and there it is... :bigcry: CommanderROR 04-25-2007, 04:59 PM Oh dear... I can't really tell you what to do...I guess you'll have to contact iRex Techsupport. Did you have any unusual modifications or anything on your Iliad? ElaHuguet 04-25-2007, 05:08 PM No, it was clean as a whistle, I was waiting for unbricking-and-easy-install to be in place before I played with it... and thanks for the advice, I emailed them before posting. Now it's just sit and wait... with nothing to read!! :end:  VillageReader 04-25-2007, 06:59 PM That's nasty. i just did my upgrade and it went smooth as silk. It took less time overall than the e-mail implied it might. ebooklvr 04-25-2007, 07:35 PM Sorry to hear about your troubles. My update went fairly smoothly. I did have to reconnect to IDS manually after the 6 steps went through (or a least I think they completed before I reconnected). The whole process went quicker than I expected although this is my first upgrade so I have nothing to compare the time to :) vranghel 04-25-2007, 11:23 PM It went smoothly for me too (this time) and faster than they said. Ella, have you tried rebooting more than once? Other than that, sit tight, get a paper book (gasp!) blow the dust off of it and start reading ;) ElaHuguet 04-26-2007, 12:19 AM I've tried rebooting several times, but nothing happens, except for some white lines at the bottom, several more appear and stay on the screen each time, but I can still see the upgrade page dimly. Problem is, I've read of all my p-books, and I only read in English, getting English books here in Mallorca isn't the easiest thing... :( Thanks for the commiseration, guys. tororebelde 04-26-2007, 03:49 AM Oh, that's a pity. Did you do this update with the 2.9.1 firmware or you were lower? Anyway if you tried to reboot so far, your just escape way is contact iRex, thought. :( I have just did my iliad update to 2.9.5 and the first time it did nothing, but after a reboot and new connection to iDS all went ok. Sorry about your troubles. nekokami 04-26-2007, 08:21 AM @ElaHuget, you seem to have a computer there as well... I know it's not as nice as reading on e ink, but desperate times call for desperate measures. :) Mambo 04-26-2007, 12:16 PM Hi, I haven't updated yet. I have received the ability to run third party programs or so called "shell script". If I update will it brick my device? I did not do any tweaks in the registry as I am Linux-illiterate. (OFF: But I know Excel and Windows very well, and SharePoint server too!) Any ideas? ElaHuguet 04-26-2007, 12:40 PM LOL, thanks Neko... I might have to do that, but my iLiad has spoilt me, turning my nose up at pc-reading; plus, I spend all day on it, I work in an IT dept, by the time I get home, my eyes need to rest. :P I already contacted Support last night, they've replied today... I just know I'll have to send it in... boo-hoo, my baby... it's too young to travel on its own! :( PS: The photo is from last night, the screen is a lot darker today. realityloop 04-26-2007, 04:57 PM I ad the shell scripts update, I just made sure that I reverted any scripts I'd ran before I ran the update.. Restore ipdf to default, restored menu order to default, restored bottom buttons to default.. Update went without a hitch for me apart from led flashing after it rebooted itself which was fixed with a reset.. then I was able to run update again to get the extra bits that come after initial 1.9.5 update. I also had all mem cards removed at the time of update. Hi, I haven't updated yet. I have received the ability to run third party programs or so called "shell script". Mambo 04-26-2007, 05:51 PM Ok my iLiad is stuck at step 2 for more than 35 minutes now. What shall I do? Is something like copying data to ram disk such a big task? Mambo 04-27-2007, 04:58 AM Stuck on Step 2 forever. ElaHuguet: let me join you in this topic and the camp of those who accidentally bricked their iLiad with this update. I really share and understand your feelings. The worst thing I am afraid of is what if the update screen gets idelibly burned on the screen? CommanderROR 04-27-2007, 05:23 AM I don't think you need to worry about screen-burning...but the rate of failure with the update is alarming! Did you have memory cards inserted? Maybe that's the problem with the failed updates? Ivan 04-27-2007, 06:47 AM I am trying to update my patch v2.9.1 to 2.9.5. I have fully charged my battery and back up files before updating 2.9.5. However, connecting to the server message, a message of “Download complete" is shown in few seconds. I checked and it is till in 2.9.1 version. I tried to restart and repeat the upgrade for 3-4 more times. Same problems to be appeared again. Please let me know what should I do? Best, IC with frustration donkaarlos 04-27-2007, 12:07 PM I have a problem with the update as well. Download goes fine. Unpacking runs up to 100% and then it jumps to download complete and shows download history (only old content). Running still on v 2.9.1.. :( Have tried several times including resetting and restarting my iliad. Any hints or advice? Mambo 04-27-2007, 12:57 PM I don't think you need to worry about screen-burning...but the rate of failure with the update is alarming! Did you have memory cards inserted? Maybe that's the problem with the failed updates? I made sure to remove memory cards. What I find very funny is the position it actually failed. I would think if it is not able to copy the data to RAM it would perhaps inform about it and allow me to do something about it. If it would have been failed after the formatting - this i would understand, since once you have formatted the flash drive it is totally empty and everything is stored in the RAM. So if it freezes at that stage and you reset - everything is lost. ElaHuguet 04-27-2007, 01:37 PM I don't use memory cards (I have a 16Mb SD card that came with my camera), I prefer the internal memory for better battery times, had no shell hack, no nothing... download seemed to go fine, but then it stuck. Thankfully, the screen has gone a lot darker since then, so I'm not so worried about burn-in, but I after the email yesterday from support, I've heard nothing from them today, so I'm still waiting to see what's next. Mambo 04-27-2007, 03:39 PM I always had problems deleting files from the internal flash drive. Windows can easily make the FAT system corrupt and which results that either copying data or formatting (in a basic method) is not possible. I think this happened in my case. So I am not wondering that it stuck at this step, however there should have been a system-test before the update which tests the resources (ram memory, read-write to the flash drive, file settings and system) whether the update is possible or not. Ela: I think you'd better chase them with emails, my experience in my own workplace that if you wait for somebody to come back to you then it will never happen. And they are quite resourceful in figuring out hundreds of reasons why they could not get back to you before and how they were in the middle of almost answering your email, etc. scotty1024 04-27-2007, 05:57 PM Their upgrade does indeed test a few things before anything irreversible occurs. The iDS sends your iLiad the file in a compressed format which is protected with a CRC32 code. They uncompress the file and the CRC32 code is checked to ensure it unpacked correctly. They are also using a Flash memory device in the iLiad that fault checks the Flash as it writes to it and will "on the fly" swap bad writes to another chunk of Flash if the write failed (and mark the failed part as bad so it won't re-use it.) That said, iRex has had continuous problems with finding and mounting file systems reliably on the iLiad. If after blanking the Flash the iLiad were incapable of re-discovering the memory device so it can communicate with it? The iLiad will be a boat anchor. I also caution everyone to get it in writing and keep copies of it if iRex says they'll pay for the shipping to return your device for repair. ElaHuguet 04-28-2007, 02:07 AM Mambo: thanks for the advice, I actually handle IT purchases for our company, so I am well used to chasing suppliers for quotes, packages, invoices and also warranties... lol, I can get pretty stroppy with them. :D I'm thinking you may be right about the corrupt file system, just before upgrading I not only backed up my files, but deleted some of them (why not all of them? dunno). Since they're going to be deleted anyway, it might have been a good idea to clean it up beforehand, formatting and all. Ivan 05-03-2007, 11:27 AM I am trying to update my patch v2.9.1 to 2.9.5. Now, Irex confirmed that my iliad has to be sent in for repair! My first thought was "Are you kidding me" I am trying to double check with Irex. My iLiad is only not able to upgrade into 2.9.5. It is working like a charm at the moment using 2.9.1. Not even mention the headache for a normal user to send it back. The scary things is that their statement of “in case of a repair out of guarantee, you will be invoiced for the costs of repair and transport.” Any of us know what the hXXX's going on? All the best, IC Mambo 05-03-2007, 03:40 PM You better send back while you are eligible, before the guarantee expires. ElaHuguet 05-05-2007, 05:17 AM Update: I received confirmation (on Thursday) that I need to send it in for repair, waiting for the return box to arrive. :dozey: Ivan 05-05-2007, 11:22 AM Update: I will recieive a return box as well!! I will have to do that although I do not want to do so! nekokami 05-06-2007, 08:11 PM Do we have any idea yet what caused the failure? I'm hesitant to upgrade until we have a better understanding of how this happened.... ElaHuguet 05-07-2007, 01:06 AM I have no real idea, my iLiad was totally unhacked (didn't have the shell hack either)... my only guess is that there were quite a lot of files on it, since I don't use memory cards, and the file system got corrupted somehow, while it was trying to delete my books and stuff. :S Ivan 05-07-2007, 03:13 AM No idea; mine just an ordinary irex and I just a normal user. I did not do anything on it! Good luck and all the best, IC Mambo 05-17-2007, 08:48 AM The iLiad was today taken from me by UPS. I miss it for almost a month now. I am very said because I was travelling a full week and was very busy also, I could not handle this thing quicker. :((((( ElaHuguet 05-21-2007, 12:50 PM My iLiad arrived on the 18th to the Repair Centre... I misssss it. :( scotty1024 05-21-2007, 03:33 PM So three weeks after it ate itself it arrives back at iRex for repair? Mambo 05-30-2007, 05:23 AM My iLiad is back today! I have not received any prior information, my name was not on the box. It just landed in our office and the stationary clerk informed the whole company that a parcel has arrived. Nobody knew to whom it belongs. Further bad news is that in one direction, the page bar does not work well. It either does not work or flips 4 pages all the time. Other than that, I am sooooooooo happy that my iLiad is back! I can not express my feelings well enough! I am not sure that they replaced the screen or not but it looks whiter and the blacks are soo BLACK. Very good to read on the screen! I would be surprised if it was always like that. They may have replaced the pin of my stylus (it scratched the surface before). Now it is running smooth on the screen, no matter how I hold it. Overall I am very happy. I missed my iLiad so much and I am so said that I have to go back to work instead of playing with my toy. I think the iLiad is the best gadget ever and I hope iRex will be successful. ElaHuguet 06-07-2007, 12:31 AM Sorry folks for the lack of news, I've been busy... my iLiad arrived back really fast (also without warning, like Mambo), I think it was the 24th, unbricked and updated. :D The GreatGonzo 06-07-2007, 10:53 AM I wonder why they've completely stopped providing info on shipping and tracking numbers. My replacement Iliad sat on my front porch steps for half a day - not something I was happy about. Are they just too busy or was it a deliberate decision? Very strange... |
