Hi guys,

I've been eyeing the Sony Reader since it was first launched a year or so ago hoping for it to eventually arrive in the UK.

There's a one on ebay in the UK at the moment for £240 which pricked my interest. the ad states that there are some dead pixels along the bottom of the screen that doesn'nt affect reading which has put me off that one :(

However I did email the seller about the ability to download books from the connect store from the UK and she filled me in on various ways to get ebooks as well as pointing me here

So, I've spent all weekend reading around the various threads here, and I'm happy to see several of you have had success getting Readers from bhvideo (or whatever the site is), so I'm probably going to go that route and get a new one.

The price of the books from the connect store doesn't put me off (I never buy hardbacks myself, only paperbacks, and the ebooks seem cheaper than paperbacks), although range of current and new books could be better (guess I'm preaching to the choir here  ) although it's good to see that there are other sources available.

Buying a Reader isn't going to stop me buying paperbacks (although to be honest I've only just cottoned on to buying books from ebay :rolleyes5 which has got me 8 books for the price I would have paid for 3), but it's the ease of accessing my library that really appeals. I keep all my books and have read most of them several times.

Last time we went on holiday for two weeks, my wife and I both took around half a dozen large paperbacks each, taking a reader and a couple of SD cards is so much more preferable.

I dare say I'll duplicate many of my paperbacks, but I'm sure I'll also read a lot of stuff that I may otherwise not have read - a couple of pounds or less for a book by an author I've never read is preferable to £6 or more

It's my birthday at the end of the month, so looks like I'll treat myself to one - anyone know if I was to order one on the 30th would I still get the credit offer, or has the device got to be registered by the 30th?

Thanks, and sorry about the longer than intened first post - what can I say? I'm excited :rolleyes5

Welcome to MobileRead, Gravitas! :smiley2:

Happy upcoming birthday to you too, while I'm at it. :party2:

I believe the ConnStore Credit offer requires actual registration by 4/30, here's a link to the details (http://ebooks.connect.com/promos/promotions/50promo/50.html).

I'm glad that we were able to help you with your decision, stick around and we'll try to help you really enjoy your new toy as much as we enjoy ours.

Congratulations on the upcoming birthday present! I do hope you get in on the free ebooks offer before it expires.

I would also be concerned about a device with multiple pixels. Mine actually has one dead pixel that I've noticed. It might have more, but they are hard to find. You need to be looking at it when it's white area around it. And even then it looks like a speck you would blow or wipe off the screen. I haven't noticed mine for months, so it's either gone or I've just tuned it out in my brain somehow.

At any rate, good luck with the purchase (and one for your wife also?) and glad to have you at MobileRead. Let us know what you think of it. The ebook Reader I mean, but any praises for MR are also quite welcome! ;)

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I just placed my order with bhphotovideo.com - shipping says 3-5 days, so I'm hoping I'll get it in time to get it registered and take advantage of the $50 credit offer /crossesfingers

Time to start downloading some free books so I'm all ready to rock'n'roll when it arrives.

I already have a bunch of Star Wars ebooks, but they're all in pdf format, so I'll be looking closely at the converters. Book designer seems to be getting the thumbs up from most people so I'll take a look at that first.

I'll keep you posted as to how I get on.

Oh, and this site just rocks - without it I'd still be dithering whether to get an ebook reader or not

I would advice you to call bhphotovideo.com and make sure your card details were accepted and your order was successfully processed (they want you to send a copy of front/back of your card to them either by fax or email, then check if your credit card company didn't block the transfer because they thought someone abroad is trying to cheat on you (visa blocked the transfer for me, I had to call them, though bhphotovideo.com informed me immediately that there is a problem with the transaction, because of that I also had to re-send email with the pics of my card)).
It took 2.5 days between when they accepted my card details and when I received the reader :)

good advice, thanks. I paid via paypal though, so I'm not sure whether I need to send my CC details. I have an email query in with them, and if I don't hear from them by the time I get home tonight I'll be putting in a call to them (I just hope they don't keep me on a hold for a long time  )
