Engadget has opened voting (http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/12/the-2006-engadget-awards-vote-for-handheld-of-the-year/) for the 2006 handheld of the year award. It's time to stand up and be recognized! Even though the Reader has been well-received and exceeded expectations, the mainstream press might make you think that the Sony Reader can't get any votes. Not true!

The Sony Reader is doing pretty well - even if only in third place at the moment. It's up against the Microsoft/Intel publicity machine - with some highly publicized UMPCs, backed by Bill and gang. Yet the Sony Reader has started out strong.

Here's our chance to publicly demonstrate how many people care about e-book readers, and indicate that there's a real market to be reached with new products like the Reader. So how about adding your vote to show them we care, and see if we can bump that total up just a bit!

What are you waiting for? Cast your vote here (http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/12/the-2006-engadget-awards-vote-for-handheld-of-the-year/) with a simple click! Voting ends April 15th, 2007.

Thanks to kenbaldwin for spotting (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10360) the news!

Interesting as one-half of the entries are from Sony. At the time I cast my vote the Reader was in 5th place but the space between 1st and 5th was not a lot.

Well, now up to 3rd place. We're close to second but the leader is far ahead.

Already voted earlier. Happy to see the Reader doing so well with the competition.

Know what! Even if the reader does not win it is still up there in the top class!

I can still vividly remember the snubnosed remarks that used to dot the Engadget site, posting the reader as a failure.

This is really a sign of the strength of the ebook. When you look through the negative comments pertaining to the demise of ebook reading devices, you can feel the presence, the workings of a big unstoppable machine, the ebook is here to stay!

It is a very positive note that it was selected as one of the top six to be voted for.

It's come up (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=101), on occasion (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=101). :wink:

Hasn't been much actual movement on it yet, though (in almost a year). :sad:

Looks like the Reader finished in a very strong 3rd place, ahead of a top UMPC (the Asus R2H) and way ahead of the Pepper Pad 3. In fact, it was amazingly only a few percentage points behind the Samsung Q1P.

Thanks to everyone who participated! It will be interesting to see the Engadget take on the results.

2006 Handheld of the Year Voting Results:

* Asus R2H 797 (13.2%)
* Pepper Pad 3 256 (4.2%)
* Samsung Q1P 1175 (19.4%)
* Sony Mylo 702 (11.6%)
* Sony Reader PRS-500 975 (16.1%)
* Sony VAIO UX280P 2148 (35.5%)

The other odd thing, Bob, is that the site is still letting people vote (I'm assuming they don't count, and/or Eng already posted the results.) Reader is still in 3rd place, but now has over a thousand votes.

In some ways, though, this poll was like asking "What's your favorite mode of transportation: BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Hummer, Learjet, or tricycle?"

Didn't keep me from voting, though, even if a little late...

What? A skewed poll? In this day and age? I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked! ;-)
