View Full Version : Sharper Image Literati
montealan 09-30-2010, 11:47 PM Since I just bought and returned the Literati I thought I should write a very brief review of it.
As some background info, I own an Ectaco Jetbook and Jetbook Lite, a Sony PRS 500(the first one sold by Sony) and a Sony PRS 300. I am very familiar with all the different types of ebook files (.lrf, .eub, .mobi, .pdf, .lit, .rtf, .fb2 etc, etc.) I have purchased ebooks from Sony, Border's, Amazon, and most recently, Kobo. So I consider myself pretty ebook-literate.
With that said I decided to buy the new Literati. Out of the box it looked very nice. It came with a nice case, power charger, and USB cable. It has wireless access to Kobo's online ebook store. But you cannot use it to browse the internet as there is no built in browser.
After setting it up with the time, date, and some other info. it goes to the main page which is tabbed for Books, Bookstore, and I think another tab was for open books (currently reading).
All worked fine. I logged on to Kobo's site and it automatically downloaded the books which I had previously purchased (after pressing "sync" icon). By the way, although it is a color screen, it is not a touch screen.
The first problem I noted was when I inserted my 1 gb sd card into the reader. Although it recognized that a card was inserted, it would not read the card. I tried it three times ensuring that the books on it were not inside any folders. No luck.
When I connected the reader to my computer running Win 7 the computer said that an unknown device was connected but it did not have the proper driver. The Web site did not have any info or downloads to help rectify this situation.
Also the box said the reader can go into night reading mode, where the screen goes black and the print white. There was no way I found to do this, and the instructions did not mention anyway to do this.
Finally you cannot read a book in landscape, only portrait, which seems a waste as the the screen is very long and narrow. Since I could not get a pdf on it I have no idea whether it has reflow.
So I packed it back into its nice box and returned it to the store.
Too bad, because I wanted to like it. Unfortunately it just does not hack it as an ereader.
Back to my Jetbooks which can read anything I throw on them. They are probably the best readers available for the price and for their versatility.
Robotech_Master 10-03-2010, 01:51 AM The reviewer's guide I got with my review unit said that night-reading mode, custom bookshelves, bookmarks, and "dog ears" are expected to be added in an update in the November/December timeframe.
I'm having the same issues you did with the device not being recognized by my computer, and it not finding any e-books on my SD card. They're sending me a new USB cable (they said they had a bad batch) and I'll see if that improves the connection issue.
I'll admit I'm not very impressed so far, but I've contacted their support department and will see what they have to say about it.
dixieknits 11-02-2010, 02:36 PM It sure looks like an "Augen" in Liberatti's clothes.....However, whoever wrote the firmware, omitted, the broswer, gensor, and many of the other features of Augen's "the Book". If you read the Augen threads, you can see they are probably the same and have the same problems. For the SD card to be read, the unit must be on when it is inserted, then turned off, then back on again. go figure, but that works..
el Ducko 12-15-2010, 10:40 AM Is there a "GO TO" function for the Literati that would help me avoid having to page through a book in order to get to a certain page? :chinscratch: Imagine having to page through a dictionary in order to find a word beginning with, say, the letter "S." Hopefully there's a function which works both on .ePub and .PDF formats.
...sure is easier to use a notebook PC. So far I'm underwhelmed.
Cgray 12-25-2010, 04:58 AM Holy hell. This thing is, IMO, borderline actionable in a legal sense. Functions promised on the package which not only don't work, but evidently *don't exist*. I got one for Christmas, and am going to be returning it. If I can't return it, I'll probably just throw it away. It's left that much of a bad taste in my mouth to the point where I'm seriously considering just sticking with dead tree and ignoring the ebook end of things unless I can read them on my desktop computer.
It's that bad.
So some questions.
1. has anyone-- *anyone* successfully loaded a pdf on it? I've done everyting the cheery manual says and no go. If someone can tell me how to do that, hopefully before monday, I might be tempted to keep it. Might.
Also, avoid the "Reset to factory defaults." Yes, it gets rid of your books. It also destroys the file structure and leaves the storage space unformatted, requiring you to reformat it using your desktop computer-- and I have no idea if that format works with the literati books, since, oh right, I haven't been able to LOAD any. (well, they're loaded, as far as the browser on my computer is concered, but not as far as the literati is concerned).
It crashes, freezes, on a fairly random basis.
I can safely say, having updated to the newest firmware, that this product is an utter dog. It is useless for anything other than the most basic ereading of what comes from the Kobo store. A nice color screen is no good, if it doesn't work-- sort of like the raciest looking car in the world is a lawn sculpture if you don't bother, I dunno, to install a working engine.

Hi,
I was able to load pdfs in it. Actually I recommend a factory reset. Can't you backup your ebooks? Ok this is what I went through. When I first turned it on, I entered in the date and then entered the wi-fi info. It then told me that I the software needs to be upgraded and I let it go ahead. Then the ebook reader powered off (I thought it would restart but it never did). I manually turned it on. When I checked the software version it has version 1.9 dated December 3rd 2010. Then I connected the device via the USB to my PC and opened up the drive in explorer. I dragged a few pdf files and unplugged it after which it processed data but no pdfs showed up in the ereader DOCS menu even though they were present in the ereader. When I tried to manually delete the files from explorer it threw an error saying "cannot read data from source or disk". After trying for long I decided to do a factory reset. It powered off and when I turned it back on I got a screen saying your software is being updated. After this everything worked fine. The ebook reader is faster and I was just able to drag pdfs into the drive and they did show up in the DOCS menu and now I'm relatively satisfied.
Note: even after the 2nd update the version of the software is the same.
You can try this and see if it works. It is a decent device and better for pdfs than the Aluratek Libre which I own too but plan on returning.
Good Luck
Larpam10 12-28-2010, 06:58 PM As a newbie to ereaders, the Literati seems to be doing what I want it to. It downloads books so I can read them. Obviously, for $60.00, it is not perfect, but I can live with it.
I was wondering if anyone knew the storage capacity of the Literati (without SD card)? Also, I unable to ascertain information from sharper image regarding chargers. It appears to be the same size as the kindle 1st generation and I would like to purchase an extra home charger and a car charger. Anyone know the answer to this question?
Thanks
zz2003 12-28-2010, 09:22 PM I am wondering about recharging the unit as well. It says don't overcharge. But it doesn't say what a 'normal charge' would be.

The storage is 256MB, I think.
protheus 12-28-2010, 10:34 PM Ok, so the roommate has a Shift3 LookBook, which is supposed to be quite similar to the Literati. Similar enough that I'm beginning to think it may be the same hardware. Comparison here (http://www.the-digital-reader.com/2010/10/19/review-cvs-lookbook/). Anyway, if that's the case, those of you who can't get it to be recognized by the computer may be making the same mistake he was when he tried it. It turns out that the computer won't have any idea what to do with it (though it recognizes that something is plugged in) until you turn the reader on. It may be worth a try. No, I don't think Shift3 mentions this requirement in the manual either.

clittle 12-29-2010, 05:02 PM I just picked one up at BestBuy ($50 + tax).
Windows 7 does see the literati as a drive; but when I drop books (epub format) on the drive they don't show up on the literati.
I also downloaded a book from Kobo. It said it downloaded but is nowhere to be found.
The same book from Kobo shows up on my Kobo Desktop app.
But the Desktop app won't sync with the literati.
I guess it's time to return it.
Oh well. A $50 reader was hard to turn down.

You might try a little harder first. It is likely that books need to go in a special folder. The literati is in our wiki with a web site reference. They have a support page and support people. You might just get it to work.

clittle 12-29-2010, 10:20 PM Hi Dale,
I'd very much like to get this thing to work.
I've tried putting my books in every available directory. Perhaps I have to add a directory but then I wouldn't know what to call it. Even though several books came with the device, the don't appear in the directory structure when viewed on my PC.
But not only the fact that I can't add a book via my PC, I can't even add a book from Kobo.
I tried using the literati's wireless connection. I went through all the motions, downloaded a book, sync(ed), etc. But the book is nowhere to be found on the device.
Then I went to the kobo desktop app and there it was! That is, it was on the Kobo Desktop app on my PC; not on the literati.
I then tried to sync from the kobo desktop app to the literati and it said it could not!
I'm afraid this device is no longer supported. I tried to call the support number and was left on hold till I gave up. Also the support email: literati@kobobooks.com seems dead. My message came back a undeliverable.
support@kobobooks.com works but I don't know if I'll get an answer.
I'm disappointed.

You can probably try turn on the literati before you plug it into your PC. Also, be sure to get the updates. It took me a good 2 days to figure out how to get it right. Reset several times as well. But after I've got my way around, it is great and so worth 50$

Believe me, I'm trying. ;) I've done all you've suggested (turn on first, reboot, get updates) and nothing seems to work.
Have you tried dropping a book onto the literati drive that opens on your PC? If so, which directory do you put it in?
Thanks
clittle 12-30-2010, 07:40 AM ...Actually I recommend a factory reset...
Thank you arsenal_fan!
I went back, re-read your post, and did a factory reset. Now it works beautifully.
This thing looks like a gem for $50!
Call me a happy camper.
And many thanks to mobileread. Without this forum I'd have given up.
clittle 12-30-2010, 09:16 AM Update. I ordered a 2nd one!

Yes, I did a few PDFs with it. Put it under the Literati drive, not any folders under there.
Also a suggestion is try an SD card if you have one. Quickly put a pdf file on it and see if it works.
Good luck.

It's working great now. And yes, I put books in the root directory of the literati drive.
I've only tried epub books so far but I suspect pdf's will work just as well.
I don't have an SD card yet but one is on order. I'll give it a try as soon as it arrives.
Thanks
Larpam10 12-30-2010, 06:39 PM Literati update
I received response from Sharper Image. Some good news.
Literati has a 512mb internal memory and it does use 1st generation kindle chargers.
As far as downloads, for now I am sticking with kobo and downloading directly to the Literati via wifi which seems to work very well.

For a moment I thought you were suggesting a literal act rather than an abstraction in software. "Have you tried dropping a book onto the literati?" :)

cyann92 12-31-2010, 02:30 AM Hello all! First I'd like to mention that with the exception of what's mentioned in the title, I'm very happy with this device I was blessed enough to receive as a Christmas present. It worked without a hitch until the 27th, then it stopped syncing. The desktop application works wonderfully, but won't sync up with the device. I have no wireless connection issues, that part is working as well. The latest firmware is 1.9, dated 3 Dec 10. I wondered if it might be a space problem, so I attempted to delete some of the books I added via adobe digital additions, however this device is VERY protective and just won't let anything go! :D ( I get an error message each time, either saying it can't access the drive, or the delete failed). I also attempted multiple times to do hard reset, and factory restore to original default settings, but it refuses to do so. Basically, I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I'd really hate to return it, because except for that, I enjoy it very much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. http://cdn0.4dots.com/i/smiliesadd1/help.gif Thank you in advance!

Did you try to go to Settings, and restore to factory default? I think that will probably delete all the files on it. Good luck!

I'm sorry you paid $60 for the Literati? They sell them for $250 at Kohl's. Yeah, my grandmother payed $199 for it for me for chirstmas. Obviously she didn't know it was crap.
ashleecrazee 01-03-2011, 04:25 PM This is my SECOND literati, I simply thought the first one was broken. The desktop software doesn't work, and it wont read any books. I am soo close to fed up. HEEELLLPPP!
clittle 01-04-2011, 06:14 AM I don't know why; but I've got this urge to defend the liberati.
Mine has been working beautifully since I did a factory restore (see my prior posts for details).
My wife has a Kindle 3. I like it too. But both have pros and cons.
The Kindle excels in bright daylight but the liberati kicks butt in the dark.
The liberati shows page numbers which I kind of like; the Kindle doesn't.
Kindle has a rudimentary browser; can keep typed in notes; can look up words you highlight on a page; and a few other nice but not necessary features. The lib... lacks such niceties.
All in all, for $50 I'd take the liberati any day.

Hello and thank you for your suggestion! Yes, I did several times, attempt to do a factory reset. The thing about this is, I do love this e-reader, as I had a wonderful experience with the exception of these small issues. I had no issues connecting to my WiFi network, or the desktop application. It stopped syncing, adding, updating, or deleting items after 2 days of use. I finally had to contact the manufacturer directly last week for further assistance. Tech/Customer support personnel walked me through several troubleshooting options, including a factory reset, before finding that my particular e-reader is defective. They will be sending me a pre-paid label to return it, as well as sending a replacement reader, at no cost to me. I am also thankful for the person I received this from for Christmas! Upon purchasing, they opted to add in a complete coverage 2 year warranty that was offered by the merchant at the time of sale, for only a few extra dollars, starting from the date of purchase. I've had experience with both the kindle and Literati, and I think there are some definite positives about both, that should make people who own them very happy. Though my Literati experience hasn't been a completely positive one, I wouldn't hesitate owning another. I would also like to mention something shared with me when I spoke to the manufacturer's customer support Tech. Per the Tech, I was told that even though it states in the user's manual that you can use adobe (or digital additions) to assist in your e-book managing needs or for dropping items to your Literati, it's suggested (though epub format is supported) to convert any items to .pdf format (which will then store all added items in the "documents" tabbed section of your Literati), as that's less problematic for the reader to "read it", and to use Calibre instead of Adobe, as it compliments and supports the literati in a more seamless fashion.
clittle 01-07-2011, 08:52 AM Thanks for the feedback from literati tech. support.
I had tried to contact them but was on hold for so long I gave up.
Larpam10 01-07-2011, 09:43 AM I have had no problem downloading books from Kobo directly to the Literati via wifi.
I have added books from Kobo directly to an SD card that was in the SD card slot of my laptop. The Literati recognized the card and updated my library.
I ran into a problem when I bought a book on the Borders site and downloaded the adobe application for the reader. The Literati did not recognize it. For now, I will just stick to the Kobo store. It would be nice if Kobo was a little more user friendly in regards to budget books etc.
arsenal_fan 01-07-2011, 08:10 PM A problem I have with this ereader is when reading a document in landscape mode the page turn buttons (on the screen borders) flip over to the next page when in fact they should display the bottom half of the same page (since landscape mode displays only half of the original page). Of course we can use the buttons on the bottom right of the keypad but that makes reading in landscape mode with one hand almost impossible.
Also, if you increase the font size you have to scroll left and right to read sentences since there isn't a word wrap / fit-width functionality. These two issues are bothering me a little.
I'm thinking of calling customer support in the hope of getting them to do a software update or something?

Hi there -- I'm trying to help out folks who have a Literati and are finding it confusing.
PDF books transferred to the Literati are in the DOCUMENMTS file/tab -- not under books. I don't know why, but I bet if you check there -- you'll find them.
I only found mine by accident. Apparently the Literati will recognize EPUB files as books, but thinks everything PDF is a "Document" -- They still transfer perfectly well to the "What I'm Reading" tab on my device.
Sure hope this helps y'all. Mine was a cheap device, and it took a lot of time to figure it out. But it's pretty well usable.
bobfeland 01-11-2011, 05:42 PM We bought one on black Friday since than we've bought 4 more. I also have a Nook Color. I'd recommend the Literati without reservation. Sure we've had some minor glitches and worked through all rapidly-we love it! My wife reads without eye strain-she loves it!
bobfeland 01-11-2011, 05:49 PM I have loaded pdf files, 256 k on original memory-I've transferred hundreds of epub books to the literati.
eSheri 01-12-2011, 10:54 PM Hello all!
So I just picked up a Literati at Khols for $69. I would have NEVER purchased this as it was SOOOOO visually unattractive! But I decided to give it a whirl.... and its very pretty! the photos on the box don't do it justice. Its white with a metallic bronze keyboard. The back of the unit is also metallic bronze & silver at the top. i am very pleased with how it looks! I read arsenal_fan's suggestion and was prepared to do so, but after turning it on, i see that it already has already been updated. (SW=Dec 3, 2010) I'm wondering if this was a return because it has an email address in it already. Hmmm?.... So far so good. The screen is bright.
(15 minutes later) I did a factory reset and WOW! this thing is great!! the side keys to turn the page are touch keys and they are VERY snappy! No delay at all!!! Its snappier than the Nook 3G i played with today, and faster than the Kindle 3g I played with also!
WI-FI ---- BOOM! I'm there first try! this thing is like lightening!!!
I'll be back later!!
SCION 01-12-2011, 11:44 PM I'm considering getting two of these for an 8 and 10 year old. Do you think it's too long and/or heavy for small hands?
MrHatandClogs 01-13-2011, 06:45 AM First of all, I'd like to say, I had similar problems to what everyone's saying, but after updates and the Factory reset(deletes everything even the free books already on there. You can get them back from the Kobo store for free. And you'll have to reformat the hdd from your computer, which sucks b/c it halves your memory?), it works great. I use adobe digital editions to transfer anything DRM protected. Manually add .pdfs. I've talked to Tech at literati, and they've told my that it isn't being recognized by the Kobo desktop application yet, but they are working on an update right now that will fix this. But you can just sync it by wifi. The subscriptions are awesome, I have a subscription to "The New York Times", everymorning I sync, and there's my new issue, it's awesome!! The .pdf reader is decent, but it's sluggishly slow, I hope they improve this. The landscape mode is great but scrolling is so slow, they need to fix that. I wish the screen was a little better resolution, only b/c I was planning reading Manga on it, but the screen size isn't optimal for this. In landscape manga is nice, but again, reading in landscape take forever b/c the scrolling is so slow, literally like at least a 1 sec delay between scrolls! But other than that I love it. Reading books is a cinch, the night reading mode is awesome! The color screen is beautiful. It has it's cons but for the price the literati is awesome!
eSheri 01-13-2011, 08:59 AM Scion, the Literati would be great for your young readers! its much lighter than the Nook Color and would be comfortable in their little hands. :)

Melonology 01-13-2011, 05:57 PM Hello everybody. I recently purchased a Literati and was hoping someone could help me out with this device.
My first problem is charging. How can I tell if it is fully charged? Should it be turned on when charging?
My second problem is transferring books. I do not use Wi-Fi and planned on purchasing books on the computer from Kobo and putting them on my Ereader using the desktop application. When I connect my reader to the computer (I have Windows 7) the only option I have is to open a folder to view files, which doesn't do me any good. I can't transfer the books on the application to my Literati. The demo shows that there is a sync option, but I don't seem to have one.
I hope someone here can help me figure out how to enjoy my Ereader. Thanks.
MrHatandClogs 01-13-2011, 07:58 PM Hello everybody. I recently purchased a Literati and was hoping someone could help me out with this device.
My first problem is charging. How can I tell if it is fully charged? Should it be turned on when charging?

Hello, I'm not really sure on the charging question, as there really is no way to tell if it's fully charged. Other than the fact that the battery symbol is full on the device.
With transferring, I've talked a tech support person at literati. They told me that as of the Dec 3 2010 update(1.9 version) the Literati does not connect to the Kobo desktop application. But, the are working on it, and it will be included in the next update. But, there is a way to get the books on there without using it.....
1.) If you haven't already, you'll need to download Adobe Digital Editions. (You can get it free from the Adobe website, just google it :))
You'll need to first authorize the program to your computer, by entering your Adobe ID, you'll need to register with Adobe if you don't have one.
You'll then need to authorize your Literati to the Adobe program, if you've updated to the 1.9 firmware, then the first time you connect the Literati to the computer while you have Adobe Digital Editions open, it you should ask you to do this automatically.
2.) Whether buying a book from the Kobo store, another ebook store, borrowing from your local library, etc....
After you purchase a book it will be in your "purchased" books area on the actual Kobo website, next to it should be a button that says "Adobe DRM EPUB".
Click this button to bring up the dialog box, and select "open with: Adobe Digital Editions".
After doing so Adobe Digital Editions should be automatically opened, and it will start downloading the book onto your "library" shelf.
You then just need to "drag and drop" the book from the "library" shelf to the "literati" shelf in the program(this shelf will only be in the program when you have the literati connected to the computer), disconnect your Literati from the computer(Always eject it from the computer before disconnecting), and the literati should automatically update and then show the new book on your device.
Hope this helps
MrHatandClogs 01-13-2011, 08:02 PM P.S. And when trying to authorize the Literati to the Adobe Digital Editions program, it is imperative that you have update to the newest firmware. When I tried to do it out of the box(before updating), the Adobe Digital Editions didn't recognize the literati. Not until I updated to 1.9 did it recognize.
And, using this method, you won't be able to utilize the "News and Mags" subscriptions. The only way to get the issues to your device is either by syncing wirelessly or syncing with the Kobo desktop application. And since the Kobo desktop app doesn't recognize the Literati, this option is impossible until they fix this.
So in short, to use the "News and Mags" subscriptions on the Literati, you have to be able to sync wirelessly until they fix this problem with a new update.
hokiepokie30 01-14-2011, 11:13 AM I am wondering about recharging the unit as well. It says don't overcharge. But it doesn't say what a 'normal charge' would be.The normal charging time is 6 hrs. but i find that it is usually done charging in about 4. but the battery does die quickly if you have it in wireless mode.
clittle 01-14-2011, 12:10 PM Hi,
I know this is a minor point but it's only been a couple of weeks and my next page key is impossible to see in subdued light.
I'm looking for ideas to rectify this.
Some of my thoughts:
-A dab of dayglo nail polish (if I can find such a thing)
-A notebook hole reinforcement patch (do they still make them?)
-A dab of touch-up paint from my car (which is white).
If anyone has a better idea I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks.
Update...
I used a notebook ring reinforcement patch and sealed it with a bit of clear nail polish. So far it's working nicely. Don't know if it will wear off; but it's easy to replace.
threebeers 01-18-2011, 12:29 PM Here's my experience with the Literati device. It is better than the reviews state, because the reviewers either used old firmware or didn't mess with input. At around $50 it is worth a purchase.
After installing the 1.9 firmware it is pretty fast, page turns are good, display is grainy but readable. Best on mid-brightness setting. The serif font is the better of the two.
Night mode is good. Because it is narrow, out of the case you can hold it with one hand, wrapped around. If you have large hands, you can even turn the page with your wrapped-around fingers.
At a table, viewing angles are limited, setting it up on a reading stand (like for cookbooks) helps.
I can't figure out how to remove the 25 free books. I installed the desktop and set up a Kobo account and synced but they don't show up on the PC. I added a book to the PC account and on sync it appeared on the Literati, so I know that sync works. Help! Maybe they are stuck in ROM. If so the kindly people who program this should give an option to sync them out in v 2.0.
This works best with Calibre. It is recognized as a device.
The internal article hyperlinks show up on the device screen, but you can't click them. You have to go to Menu/Table of Contents to pull up a list.
Standard sideloaded epubs leave too large a margin. There must be an easy epub editor to fix this? Looked around the forums and the editors don't seem simple.
Instead, I converted a couple of Mobis and Lits to Epub with 0 margins on Calibre, and these do display well.
This runs on linux. Since it has a wifi card, a keyboard, and a pointer that could act as a mouse, it would seem to be a good candidate for a custom firmware that introduces a browser, etc. Or if Kobo wants to keep it dedicated Kobo should make a simple web or RSS browser available through the dedicated line (it isn't like they have to pay for the bandwidth, it is wifi). Then they can have something to offer when they sell the thousands of refurbs that will show up in a couple of months as the Christmas returns roll back out.
clittle 01-18-2011, 03:51 PM Good recap. Thanks.
Just curious, but how do you know it runs on linux? Just because it has wifi, a pointer, etc. doesn't mean it's linux.
twowheels 01-18-2011, 04:57 PM For $50 I would have definitely considered one of these for my daughter if I hadn't already bought her the Slick ereader that Big Lots was selling. She seems happy with it though, so I guess it's OK that I spent $40 more... the Literatis were selling for an INSANE price at Kohl's last time that I saw them.

From Goodereader.com: "It is running on a custom Linux operating system, designed by Kobo."
amybobamy 01-19-2011, 11:30 PM Okay, someone posted that the battery lasts longer if you don't run it in wi-fi mode -- How do I turn off the wi-fi? Because frankly, I am getting books from the library, and NOT from Kobo (which doesn't seem to work for me anyway).
Please -- can someone tell me how to turn off the wifi?
Thank you in advance!
ETA == Found a way to turn off the wifi. I guess sometimes that feature works, and sometimes not!
Hope this helps preserve battery life! Right now, it's barely enough for a few doctor appointments!
goodereader 01-20-2011, 04:44 AM Threebeers is infact correct! Actually as you prob mostly know, most e-reader operating systems are Linux and Kobo designed and tweaked the OS based on the hardware. They did this in turn for higher royalties for ebooks sold via the device and the exclusive kobo bookstore on the e-reader and the inability to access other bookstores on the device. Good thing for being able to sideload epubs.
clittle 01-20-2011, 06:33 AM In a way that's good news.
If it linux based it might be possible to hack it.
goodereader 01-21-2011, 01:57 AM Well to hack it, since its a variant of Linux you would more then likely to get the source code which is not to my knowledge available.
clittle 01-21-2011, 08:15 AM I don't think source code is the issue.
I'm not a hacker so take this with a grain of salt.
The hard part is figuring out how to get into and modify the code in the first place.
Since linux is under the gpl the source code should be freely available.
And since it's linux, it should be easy to identify where customizations have been made. It would be a matter of doing a byte by byte comparison.

You can turn off the wifi anytime by going to the homepage("I'm Reading"), clicking menu>settings>wireless>uncheck the "Wireless Networking: Enabled"
box. And turning it back on the same way.
If your still having trouble adding books form Kobo, etc. if you haven't already, see my help thread here...http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116434
I am gonna make a wiki page for Literati FAQs as well, and will post links when completed.

Anyone know what's new/different?

Just installed the 2.0 update and didn't notice anything different.
In another post someone said 1.9 bricked Kobo Desktop sync, so maybe that is fixed, but I don't use that anyway (I use Calibre instead).

Kobo-purchased books: you can highlight passages and enter notes.
All books and docs: you can bookmark multiple pages
Kobo mags: I can now access via wireless
Dictionary: now a pop-up which I think is a change from before.
Bookshelves: multiple personalization choices
Haven't tried it but on menu is a delete document choice.
Wonder when they're planning on updating the support web page and the online manuals.

BTW, I was able to delete a few books. It works!
nkrenz 01-29-2011, 01:54 PM Hi! I purchased a Literati a couple of days ago and everything was running smoothly until about 1 hour ago when I connected via WiFi for the first time to try downloading.
I connected with no problem but right away received a message that there were important updates that needed to be downloaded. I did that without a problem and was instructed to restart.
I turned off the unit but found that this time, unlike previous times, I had to hold down the off button for about 10 seconds before the unit would turn off, previously it only required a slight tap.
I turn it back on and it is frozen on the first screen that displays the name and Sharper Image.
I pushed the reset botton on the back only to have the main screen still frozen,
I was so pleased with the ease of connecting to WiFi and the problem free download and now I am ready to take this back to the store.
clittle 01-29-2011, 04:58 PM When you hold the power button down for a few seconds the unit turns off completely. Just tapping the button puts it to sleep.
When you restart it from sleep mode it responds quickly but when it's been off it takes a while to start up again.
Give it a few minutes (maybe five) and see if it comes back to life.
nkrenz 01-30-2011, 09:50 AM Thanks for the info on the off/on. Tried firing up the unit again this morning and still can't get off the main logo screen.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again!
MR. Pockets 02-02-2011, 11:05 PM I just bought a Literati. After updating it, I plugged it into my computer which recognized a storage device and told me it was ready for use. I tried to access the Literati via the comp but it claims the drive isn't formatted. Should I format it?

Mine says "There might be a problem with some files..." and offers to "Scan and fix...".
I tried that when I first got the Liberati but it didn't help; I get the same message every time. So I just ignore it. It doesn't seem to make a difference.

MR. Pockets 02-03-2011, 05:40 PM I just picked up a second. The first didn't have the 25 "free" books on it like it was supposed to and the second one did, so I was preparing to return the first. I "factory reset" it (so my info wouldn't be on it anymore) and the books appeared! The internal memory is now formatted and can be read with my computer.

I had the same problem initially, and it was due to the USB cable that came with the device. Switched to another I had lying around, and everything was fine.
lindasarto 02-03-2011, 10:15 PM I had the same thing happen yesterday after I connected mine for the first time. The key is to hold the reset button in long enough until the screen goes blank. I did that and then when I turned it on afterwards it worked fine. Hope this response is not too late for you!
MR. Pockets 02-03-2011, 11:29 PM Nope, I got it working properly! Thanks for the help.
Kismatt 02-04-2011, 07:27 PM Hi all :)
Well, I bought a Literati at lunch today, and I think 2 more people here at work are going to get it as well, since Bed Bath and Beyond has them on clearance for $39.95 in the stores.
It did 2 software updates after I connected it to the WiFi, and synced my Kobo library without a hassle (after I remembered my password...). I'll be trying the Overdrive library from home, and have printed out the instruction manual.
I have been using my G1 for books, and I keep touching the Literati screen instead of using the buttons! Navigating by buttons is hard after using a touchscreen.
The software updated to 2.0, and looks like it's working well. Have the issues with the Kobo Desktop software been resolved?

I tried to buy the Slick at Big Lots but they were sold out. After missing out on that deal, when I saw the Literati could be had for $12, I printed out my coupon and headed for the nearest store. Since I only found out about it on the last day of the rebate I didn't waste any time. They were sold out at my local Bed, Bath, & Beyond but they let me order one in-store. It should be here in the next week.
While in the area, I stopped by Kohl's. I scanned the Literati on one of their price checkers and it came up $249!!!!! Once home, I checked their website where it is listed for $69. Pricing on this unit is all over the map.
Ironically, while in Big Lots the other day, I saw they finally have the Slicks back in stock. Glad I didn't see it first...

This sounds like a great idea. I'm already getting frustrated with the difficulty in hitting the right spot in the dark.

Hi,
I'm a bit surprised that others haven't submitted alternative solutions.
Anyway, I use a notebeook hole reinforcement tab as a mask to make sure I get a good circle. Then some white auto touch-up paint for the base, a second coat of sparkle nail polish ( the sparkles are in a clear lacquer thus the white base); and finally a coat of clear nail polish for protection.
The sparkles have some "grit" which is good for tactile feedback.
The notebook reinforcement has to stay on for a couple of days or the polish may come off with it. But the reinforcement isn't a bad touch anyway.
It works quite nicely.

BoomerM3 02-07-2011, 03:20 PM $40 from BB&B and many messages from this forum and it works fine. Used Overdrive from the local library - and that works too. OK, not a Kindle - but it's $40.
Questions:
1. Keyboard is cute. What can you do with it?
2. How do I remove a book from the 'Open' books? (I don't want to read it any more)
3. How can I bookmark a page - and leave it marked?
4. Using version 2, can I have multiple bookmarks? How?
5. How do I delete a book that I loaded thru Adobe Digital Editions?
Thanks for any answers you can provide.

1. Keyboard is used for entering search terms in the store and making notes. (Notes are only available on books downloaded from the kobo store.) Something else you can do, press "c" and it will bring up a calendar.
2. There are three methods to remove a book from the "open/I'm Reading" list. First, you can delete the book from your literati, second, you can go to the last page in the book and then press page forward. It will remove the "live" bookmark and remove it from the list. Lastly, you can (for Kobo books only) sync your device with you account, go to your account online (with a computer) and "delete" the book from your "I'm Reading" list. For me, the third method seems to be hit-and-miss for successful removals.
3. Just press "b". Or you can go to the menu (in book) and select "bookmark".
4. Refer to 3.
5. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that you select the book in your library, go to the menu and select "delete".
Hope these help.
BoomerM3 02-07-2011, 04:36 PM Thanks Mr. Pockets.
Any shortcut to lookup a word in the dictionary, while you are reading?

MR. Pockets 02-07-2011, 06:06 PM Not that I have been able to find. But I'm still finding things out so maybe I (or someone else) will find one.
CWatkinsNash 02-08-2011, 05:31 PM My new Literati will be here tomorrow. I saw a question that came up a couple of times but I don't think it got answered - the "missing" book files. The Kobo apps don't store ebooks as ePubs. If you use the apps to get the books, the book files are stored in a database. Kobo offers ePubs, however, so you can download those from the website using Adobe Digital Editions as described in a previous post. (Even if you've already gotten the books through the app, you can go to the Kobo website and download them as ePubs from your list of purchases.) It's really a matter of preference, but I prefer to use the ePubs and skip the Kobo apps whenever possible. I'll probably download the free books but I'm not a fan of Kobo, and there are plenty of other places to get Adobe or non-DRM ePubs.
Regarding the Literati firmware, not a whole lot of information has gotten around yet. There is a small group working on hacking it, and a new forum has been started: http://forum.literatidevs.com/. Not much there yet, it's brand new, as in only days old, but I think there's a post on there about obtaining the update file online and updating from the SD card instead of wifi, which may be of interest to those with wifi issues.
If you want to see the inside of a Literati: http://nightflyertechblog.blogspot.com/.
I'm already in the process of converting some of my ebooks for the "test drive" when it gets here tomorrow. I can't read for too long on an LCD, but there are times the backlight and color will come in handy, and for $40, I couldn't resist. It's interesting that what could be considered a spectacular failure for Sharper Image is turning into the first cheaply priced ereader. I can only hope that those who have trouble with them seek help here and elsewhere before throwing in the towel. Seems like persistence is paying off for most people so far.
MR. Pockets 02-08-2011, 06:07 PM Thanks for the links! Unfortunately, most everything at the forum is over my head, but I was able to add a small tidbit of info to the internet "hack" thread.
I took apart a literati (white) that had inexplicably died and the insides looked nothing like the photos in that blog or in another blog I found (http://mgroves.com/literati-ereader-hacking/).
I may have to take apart another and upload photos of it.

How long ago was the one you took apart? I'd like to get ahold of a dead LookBook to take apart and compare with the Literati you had. The Literati and the Lookbook use the same firmware, are very similar, and were built to be branded by other companies, so I wouldn't be surprised to find that they started out the same and changed to meet the budget of the branding retailer. (People were calling them "modified Literatis", and they were being sold at CVS pharmacies and other places.)
catiebug 02-08-2011, 07:31 PM I have to say, after some initial hiccups getting this up and running, I'm really enjoying my Literati. I got it in the BB&B sale, plus the 20% coupon, plus the rebate, so I was OK with the problems I was having - just needed to do some internet-fu to fix the corrupted disc issues and learn about the internet hack. I figured, for less than a tenth of the price of the PRS-950, I could put in some effort...
I like the color screen (I originally thought the LCD would be a problem, but with the adjustable brightness, it's working OK), I like the idea of the internet hack (haven't succeeded with that...yet), I like the SD card compatibility, I like the potential of the keyboard.
Ok, the battery life sucks, but I'm never somewhere that doesn't have electricity, so it's not that big a deal. My only real complaint is the PDF handling, but I'm going to try whacking some PDF books through Calibre and see if that helps any.
In short, my opinion on this device has gone from "hey, cheap e-reader" :) to "cheap piece of junk" to "diamond in the rough".
MR. Pockets 02-08-2011, 07:32 PM I took it apart about 3 days ago and had bought it just a few days prior to that. I'll see if I can get some photos of one posted soon. (I forgot to take pics of the one I had taken apart, so I'll open another.)
Meemo 02-08-2011, 09:32 PM I picked one up yesterday at BB&B - for $40 I couldn't resist. Updating went well, wifi works fine, I've got the handful of books I'd picked up at Kobo downloaded to it, I've successfully loaded a library book to it. Night reading is great with the display turned down to the lowest brightness setting.
One odd thing - those 25 free classics that were loaded on it initially are now missing - can't quite figure out where they went. It's not a big deal, I can get them anywhere - just wonder where they went??
Fingers are crossed that it'll keep working - I kinda like it, especially for the price!

Thanks for the links. I haven't checked them out yet but I'm glad you found some info sources. Now that reader is out there at such low prices, I think think we will be seeing much more personal experience info.

As soon as I decided to order one I went looking for info. Not a lot of it out there, but I agree that we will be seeing more soon. Who would've thought the Literati would be 75% off (and more, with coupons) just four months after release.

To get the books back you will need to do a factory reset. Back up anything you have loaded on it (the reset deletes all files but the original ones) and reset it. (The factory reset option is in settings under "advanced".) You should have your books back.
Dave@Kobo 02-09-2011, 12:19 AM I picked one up yesterday at BB&B - for $40 I couldn't resist.
Hello Meemo,
When you're in your Library, check if your viewing your Library by "New". If so, using the d-pad select either "By Title" or "By Author" (from the Library). The 25 preloaded books should appear. Viewing your Library by "New" will only display those books that have been purchased or newly added to the device; therefore, the preloaded books will not appear. I hope this helps.

Dave@Kobo 02-09-2011, 12:24 AM Hi all :)
Hi Kismatt,
The Literati is now fully supported on the Kobo Desktop software. Feel free to use the Desktop application to add/remove books from your account and sync it with the device.
MR. Pockets 02-09-2011, 03:29 PM Well, first some new info I found. There are two different hardware versions of the literati. You can find which you have by looking at the HW Version number found in the settings overview. 2.6.24.223 is the old version, 2.6.28.E13 is the new version. (Or on the literati box, right above the barcode there are two numbers. The one on the right will be 19027 or 19028, 19028 being the new hardware.)
I have access to both versions and took one of each apart. The new version has a much "cleaner" build. Supposedly it also has a built in 2G sd card that has 1G unused though it only allows access to 256MB. I was unable to identify anything as an sd card, but that doesn't count for much. (BTW, they appear to have different batteries judging by the printing on them.)
The first photo is the new version with the back beside it. The next three are of a pcb board directly under the board with the usb and power plug on it. I don't know what it is but it says "GPS" on it. The last two are of the two different versions side-by-side.
I couldn't get the silver strip off of the new version so that is as far into it as I got.
CWatkinsNash 02-09-2011, 05:00 PM The weather here hasn't been much to brag about lately. :(
Looking forward to your first impressions!
It's snowing like a you-know-what and we're expecting 2 inches. But it's pretty so I won't offer to trade. :)
Okay, first impressions. The box was kind of cool, and the free cover was a nice touch. Note: It says to charge for 6 hours before use. I let it charge for as long as I could stand, which was about 3.5 hours, but left it plugged in and turned it on.
I like the screen. I like the responsiveness of the controls. I turned it on, set date, time, and such and then enabled wifi and logged on to my network. It connected quickly and immediately notified me of an update. It updated to 1.6-something. I didn't immediately remember that I needed to manually turn the wifi back on, but as soon as I did, it notified me of another update. I let it do it's thing, and now I have v 2.0.
Note - after the first update, it remembered my network key, but after the second update I had to re-enter it, so keep it handy if you don't have it memorized.
Reading - The page turn buttons are far more sensitive than I expected. Touch-sensitive rather than push. Took me a minute to adjust since all the other controls require a firm touch. Pages turn quickly. The default settings were hard on my eyes, but with the brightness controls I was able to get to a level I could read at for a while. I noticed that the pre-loaded books (or at least the few I browsed through) have more whitespace than I'm used to.
Other - I think it's cute that I can change the shelf style. Navigating through the shelf pages was a little slow, but not too awful. It goes faster if you switch to "cover and text" view instead of the covers-only shelf view. Though I don't plan to use the store much if at all, the store loads quickly and is no harder or easier to use than the Kobo site.
That's about the extent of my impressions right now. Very nice. I like it, it's functioning properly so far, and I got a heck of a deal, which always makes everything seem better. I'll probably change the store tab to a search engine with the web hack later.
One more thing - mine is the older hardware version, not the newer one, so no free gig of space for me. Fortunately I have a 4gb SDHC card I'm not using at the moment.
EDITED TO ADD: (kind of important) - The included USB cable did not work properly - my computer would not recognize the device (it installed an "unknown device" driver then said the device was not working properly) and the device did not recognize it was plugged in. I found a cable with the same size in my bag of miscellaneous cables, and at first it didn't work - I had to go into device manager, uninstall the flagged USB storage device driver and then reconnect. After that, it installed the correct driver and is working as it should.
wvcherrybomb 02-09-2011, 05:19 PM I don't know what it is but it says "GPS" on it.
Uh oh! Break out the foil hats! Now I know why the giveaway prices ... they are watching us
Thanks for posting the pics. I find things like this extremely interesting. I didn't even realize there were two versions of the Literati.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I came this afternoon specifically checking for this post. I can't wait to get mine tomorrow.
I already have an SD ready and waiting since I didn't expect it to have much space. I had also read about some problems people were having accessing the memory. Not that I would give up on putting books on the unit itself, I just wanted to play with all the functions right away.

Which version of Windows are you running?
I run Windows 7. It has problems detecting the Literati. I've tried a couple of different cables.
At work I plugged it into my computer which runs Windows XP SP3. It too reports an error. I have it turned off. I turn it on after it's connected. Eventually it appears as a removable drive.
I have the older hardware but it's running the latest firmware (1.9).

jruschme 02-09-2011, 08:58 PM Has anybody else had problems with the Literati being overlay agressive about mounting itself?
On my MacBook, if I eject the Literati, it immediately reconnects and remounts. I end up having to pull out the USB cable while mounted and getting the warning about properly ejecting a drive.
Any suggestions?

Eureka - that did it - thanks for the help! The hazards of having 3 readers, every one is different!

 Actually I was wondering if it might actually be a global positioning chip that could be enabled by hacking. I have no idea why that would be in an ereader, but it would be pretty neat if it was.

Glad I have a box of random cables.
This is yet another fluke that would cause a great number of people to return the Literati and give it bad reviews. I'm convinced that our persistance will reap us a great reader at an amazing price.

It sounds like your MacBook is in heat and your Literati is determined to reproduce. There are so few out there, you know. Survival of the species is a natural instinct. :D
wvcherrybomb 02-10-2011, 06:50 PM Got my Literati today. I absolutely love it. I am going to use it for all my books that have photo inserts. I read lots of true crime and most of those do.
Despite the problems others have had, and I expected to have, my Literati has worked perfectly out of the box.
I charged it, updated the firmware twice. The only glitch, if you can even call it that, is that I had to enter my network password again after the first update. I then used the included USB cable (which I didn't expect to work since it hasn't for others)to side-load books from Calibre.
Both my computer and Calibre recognized my Literati right away. All of my Calibre files are saved as .mobi files so when I selected "send to device," Calibre asked if I wanted them converted to the appropriate format. I intentionlly didn't convert them first just to see what would happen. Turns out Calibre is pretty smart.
I then unhooked the Literati from my laptop and all my books were there. I haven't even inserted the SD card yet. I expected problems with recognizing internal memory but that never happened.
The brightness is adjustable so I turned it down to a comfortable level. Night mode looks cool - black background with white text - but it was burning my retinas so I'll never use it.
So far I am 100% satisfied.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that Calibre thinks my Literati is a Boox although it doesn't seem to matter.
tiredeyes 02-10-2011, 11:45 PM Hi and thanks for this useful thread. I got a 19027 model this week, and although I've gotten everything to work, I am very disappointed with the D-pad. The loud clicking is really annoying, esp. at night, but worst of all it sticks when up or down is pressed, so instead of reading, I'm fighting with this little piece of plastic.
Is this typical? I am considering returning it because of this issue.
MR. Pockets 02-10-2011, 11:56 PM All the literatis I have seen have had loud D-pads and most of them do stick, but I have found that as the D-pad is not generally used when reading a book (unless you prefer to use it instead of the page turns "buttons"), it isn't that big of a problem. But, it may bug you more than it does me. I would advise you to wait longer and try to get used to it (esp if you got the reader during the recent $40 sale).

Hello jruschme,
This is a known issue that, after much effort, we could not produce a fix. It has to do with how OSX performs their un-mounting of the devices. If you open up your terminal and run the command 'sudo diskutil umount /Volume/yourliterati' you will notice it un-mounts and doesn't re-mount. Obviously, this is cumbersome and I am not suggesting this is the only way to safely un-mount your literati. Un-plugging while it's still appears mounted is safe, despite what the warning dialog says.

wvcherrybomb 02-11-2011, 11:12 AM After spending the first night with my new Literati, I now have run into a couple of things I need to fix and one thing that I don't like but will have to live with.
The issue that I can't do anything about is more about the case and less about the reader. The case is so close around the D-pad that it's a bit awkward to use. I would usually use my right thumb for it but I can't do that easily. I have to use an index finger to press the right arrow where it is right up against the case. Since the D-pad is not used during reading, it's not a real issue and would not deter me from buying another Literati.
Another thing that is not a defect but I will need to adapt to my needs is the page turn button at night. It's invisible in the dark and I need to put something there that I can feel with my thumb. Perhaps, over time, I would memorize the position making this a non-issue.
The only problem I have run into with the functional use of my Literati is that I can't seem to get it to remember second bookmarks within the same book. It is very possible that this is user error since I haven't read any directions or even looked into it that much.

How are you placing the bookmarks? Pressing "b" leaves a bookmark that can be view by opening the menu and selecting "bookmarks". I haven't had any issues placing multiple bookmarks that way.

I am pressing the menu button and choosing 'add bookmark' because I didn't know about the 'b' button.
EDIT: I tried just using the 'b' button and it works!! Thanks so much!

I have the Liberati (version 2 software) and Win 7. Power up the PC & the Liberati. NOW, connect via USB cable. Do it sooner and it won’t work!!!
If you are using Adobe Digital Editions, follow the same process.

Hello Dave,
Thanks for replying! I have firmware 2.0, but it's sooo temperamental.
Out of 30 times that I tried to plug it in my PC recognized it ONCE.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks again.

Some folks have reported that the cable that's included doesn't work well (fortunately mine does). So try another cable. They're easy to find at electronics stores.

mjt57 02-12-2011, 05:49 PM You guys are mentioning Ver 2.0 of the firmware. Mine has 1.9 and the website says that 1.9 is the latest. So, where are you getting this later version from?

Mine automatically downloaded/updated to it after I got it. I, too, noticed that the web site still says 1.9. I'm wondering, there are two versions of the hardware, the "old" and the "new". I have the "old" version. Perhaps only the "old" hardware is getting the 2.0 but the "new" doesn't need it and is getting 1.9 instead?
mjt57 02-12-2011, 06:01 PM Forget the above. I just checked. It's now 2.0. (Jan 19). Dunno when it updated as it didn't alert me.
Amaranth 02-12-2011, 10:45 PM Dave@Kobo:
Hopefully you check this thread again and see this. :) Do you know who I would get in contact with to get the u-boot and kernel source for the Literati device?

Issue 1: I agree - the black Literati is set up a bit better with more room around the D-pad. I found that using something like a pen makes it a lot easier to press the arrows - I'm thinking a stylus would be a good thing to keep handy.
Issue 2: I've read about some folks using one of those paper reinforcements around the arrows for reading in the dark. I might try using a couple of my grandkid's little stickers, they might be just enough that I could feel the spot.
nermada 02-14-2011, 05:16 PM It seems that my pc(windows 7)recognizing the literati was a fluke!!
I don't know what to do, and I've tried a couple of different cables, I have firmware 2.0 and my other pc which is running windows xp also doesn't recognize it! Help!!

Tonight I put stickers on them and yep, now I can feel where the right spot is in the dark and they don't seem to interfere at all with the sensitivity of the areas. I had some gold star stickers I'd picked up for my grandkids - they make it a bit more...colorful, shall we say?? Wish they'd thought to put a bit of a bump inside each of the arrows...
clittle 02-16-2011, 08:50 AM So far it's locked up 3 times.
First time I was able to turn it off normally and everything was OK.

Is anyone else having this problem? Just wondering if I got a dud.

I think you did get a dud. This happened to me and I exchanged my literati in the store, and now it's all good.
Hope this helps.
Meemo 02-19-2011, 02:18 PM Or try a factory reset - go into settings, advanced and return it to the original factory settings. See if that works.
clittle 02-19-2011, 04:12 PM Hi nermada & Meemo,
Thanks for the feedback.
I bought it on sale ($50) at Best Buy & doubt they'd have any left; so I don't think I can simply replace it.
I did a "paperclip" reset but not a factory reset. I'll give that a try.
But it hasn't locked up for a few days so it's hard to tell if there is really an inherent problem.
Thanks again.
Kijac 02-20-2011, 06:26 AM I have a Literati for my daughter since 2 days. I have done the 2 updates.
I have some problems:
When I uploaded many books, there aren't all these books on the Literati. I try it with ADE and with Drag + Drop. For example a book which I buy online here in germany. I uploaded 79 books and only 63 books are on the Literati. What is wrong?
I uploaded books on a SD Card and put these in the Literati. I can't find the books on the Literati. So I think the Literati will not recognize the SD Card. Why?
The book cover stinks a lot ;).
How can I sort the books in order?
Who can helps me? Thanks!

Is it possible that some of the books are "PDF" files? If so, they will be store in the "Docs" tab. Please look there.
On the menu, you may sort the books by title or by author.
peter
Kijac 02-20-2011, 02:16 PM No, that were all EPUB's .....
With the Sony Reader I can make collections and sort in these collections. Is it possible too with the Literati? When I mean sort, I mean Book 1, Book 2, Book 3 from a serie ....
Rook008 02-21-2011, 12:22 PM When you connect the Literati to your PC, you should see two new icons, one for the Literati and one for the SD card. Do you?
Also, I've noticed that my Literati has trouble finding books that were recently added that are by the same author as books already on my SD card.
When I add books like these, I usually move the entire folder off of the SD card, eject the Literati to let it process new content, then re-connect the Literati and add the entire folder (with the new books in it) to the SD card. Then I eject it for the second time. The second time I eject it, the Literati finds everything that I've added.

There may be some support to be had at Kobo's web site. They do offer tech support for the readers they are affiliated with and they have Literati information in their support FAQ section. That said, I've never used Kobo support so I can't comment as to the quality of that support.
LasVegas7 02-23-2011, 08:24 PM Hello,
I am new to this. I just wanted to share some Literati information. I just found the Literati for sale on HSN. Also, I was on at goodreader.com and read that Sharper Image is releasing a newer version (Literati 2).
Thanks
Meemo 02-24-2011, 02:09 AM They're still selling them, as far as I know it's only Bed, Bath & Beyond that was clearancing them out of their stores. I've seen the black model at Best Buy and both the black and white models at a Belk store in the past week, and they weren't marked down.
As far as who is supporting them, according to someone who had to make a lot of calls to get support, if it's a software issue it's Kobo. If it's a hardware issue, the manufacturer of the Literati is Merch Source. Sharper Image just puts their name & Literati on them.
Merch Source has 2 Customer Service numbers for hardware issues (I was given this number as well when I e-mailed Sharper Image about an issue with my charging cover).
800-374-2744
800-481-7938
866-204-4714 is Kobo's customer support help line for software issues.
BoomerM3 02-24-2011, 07:52 AM Merch Source owns the Liberatireader.com web site. If their obsolete and inaccurate content is an indication of their support, we are in a world of hurt...

mmread 02-26-2011, 02:45 AM I just got mine from Kohls today. I printed Bed, Bath & Beyond's $39.99 ad from their website before it went away. I had a 30% off Kohls coupon. I paid $30.30 which included .0825 sales tax. I had $22 Kohls gift cards. It was version 1.6. I updated it to version 2. I synced to Kobo to read my free ebook. I have not connected it to my computer yet to download my 'calibred' books.
mmread 02-26-2011, 09:24 AM Mr. Pocket,
I have my calibre set for Aluratek. However I have not downloaded any of my books that I 'calibred'. I just drag and drop from my laptop to my SD card. I use Calibre to mark read and not read. Can I use the ALP SD card and insert it to my Literati? I can't find it!! I am frantically looking for it.
Calibre question: If my calibre is set for Aluratek, do I have to set a second Calibre for Literati? I currently have only EPUB & .pdf in my Calibre.

Calibre should detect the Literati without any issue. I use the same calibre library with both my Kindle and Literati and I haven't had to manually change anything. I just hooked it up and it works.

Assuming you use Epub files (or PDF) for your ALP, yes, you can just stick the SD card in your literati.
Calibre should be able to detect your literati just fine (though my literati won't recognize drag-and-drop files after syncing to calibre for some reason). When converting specifically for the literati, just set the output to "generic output file". That seems to work the best for me.
mmread 02-26-2011, 11:37 PM My USB that came with the Literati works. I am still using Windows XP. The USB from my ALP does not work the Literati. I think the Mini is longer for the Literati then the ALP. My ALP SD card works on the Literati. I found it.
I am having problems downloading to the Literati from Calibre. But again, I have never tried it for my ALP either. I tried drag and drop to the Literati and worked the first time but I can't get it to work again.
Oh, my wifi works great. I just have to keep enabling it when the Literati turns off. I am going to try reading in bed with it to see how the 'lighting' works.
demingite 02-27-2011, 12:42 AM I didn't know it was possible to buy a Literati reader any more. I thought they were discounted and sold out. Have you seen any for sale in the last month?
If no one is selling or buying, I expect the support and the web site to fade away. Good thing mine is working well :)

I saw two for sale in a Ross clothing store last weekend for $50 each, but I passed.

I've never tried dragging & dropping with Calibre - I always just click on "Device" when the reader is connected by USB. Haven't had any problems sending books to my Literati this way.
Ophysette 03-15-2011, 07:56 PM Am learning, or trying to learn about my new literati. I really, really want it to work, but at the moment, I can only access the original 25. I believe I have managed to update correctly, but I am not sure. Having read this forum, I am not sure of the 1st problem. My computer intermittently, and mostly fails to recognize the device. I am one of the tech disadvantaged, so I believe this is problably a bad cable. So, how do I find out what type usb cable to buy, and second, how do I find the version number.
I have a brand new computer, and no wireless.

I don't have my Literati with me at the moment, so I can't address everything, but this sounds like two separate issues. Without wireless, you probably haven't updated the firmware, and until you update, you won't be able to load books from your computer onto the device. If you have a friend or public library* where you can go to get on their wifi network, you should consider that option.
It will probably take two wireless updates to get to the latest firmware revision (Version 2.0 is dated January 19, 2011), with a reboot each time to install the firmware. Please make sure you have either a full battery or have it plugged into a wall socket through this process. I can't recall the exact path to see the revision, but I think from "Home," you should look for something like "settings."
The USB cable you want is generically known as "A to (5-pin) Mini-B". An example can be seen here (http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-27005-Mini-B-Cable/dp/B000067RVL). Anecdotally, folks are finding that a ferrite choke close to the Literati end of the cable helps with connectivity, so if the cable you find doesn't already include one, you can add it (example here (http://www.dataq.com/products/hardware/accessories/fc.htm), although that price is way too high. You shouldn't pay more than a dollar each). You may even have other cords sitting around your house from which you can "borrow" a choke.
Once you have your firmware updated, and the Literati mounting as an external disk drive on your PC, I personally recommend that you use Calibre to transfer ebook files.
I hope this helps.
*You will probably not be able to access a wireless network at a Starbucks, hotel or other location that expects you to open a web browser and agree to their terms & conditions before you can log in.
Meemo 03-17-2011, 11:42 PM Actually, it is possible to update without wireless. You may indeed need a different USB cable, or if you have more than one USB input on your computer, try a different one. Directions for updating without wireless are here:

"Issue: Some Literati customers don't have access to a Wi Fi network and therefore cannot complete any of the device upgrades.
Solution: Use the Literati USB connection and the following steps
1. Plug the eReader into a charger
2. Download v1.9 of the Literati or Lookbook firmware from - http://download.kobobooks.com/firmwares/merchsource/1-9/KoboRoot.tgz , and save the file somewhere you will remember
* NOTE: Some browsers will download the file and rename it to KoboRoot.tar. The upgrade will not work with the .tar extension. If this happened with your download, please rename the downloaded file to KoboRoot.tgz
3. Keeping the charger connected, connect the Literati or Lookbook to your computer through the provided USB cable
4. The eReader will appear on your computer as a mass storage device
ON A MAC:
1. Open mass storage device in Finder
2 . Click GO from the top menu
3. Click Go to folder
4. Type in .kobo (include the period).
5. .kobo folder will open
6. Transfer the KoboRoot.tgz file you downloaded to the .kobo folder
7. Once the file has transferred, safely eject the eReader
8. Turn off the eReader
9. Turn on the eReader
10. The eReader will take up to 10 minutes to start up, please be patient and do not reset or power off the eReader in any way.
11. Once the eReader restarts, it will have the latest version (v1.9) installed. You can verify this by pressing the menu button, selecting Settings and looking at the Version number.
ON A PC:
1. Open mass storage device in Windows Explorer
2. Ensure hidden folders are visible (different for different Windows versions)
XP: Go to My Computer > Tools menu > Folder Options > View Tab > Advanced Settings > Hidden Files and Folders > Show hidden files and folders. Press OK all the way out.
Vista and Windows 7: Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Click Show Hidden files and folders > OK
3. Open .kobo folder in the mass storage window
4. Transfer the KoboRoot.tgz file you downloaded to the .kobo folder
5. Once file has transferred, safely eject the eReader
6. Turn the eReader off
7. Turn the eReader on
8. The eReader will take up to 10 minutes to start up, please be patient and do not reset or power off the eReader in any way.

I have v2.0 released Jan 19th I believe.
Meemo 03-19-2011, 04:27 PM I have v2.0 released Jan 19th I believe.
Yes, the newest version is 2.0. That was a cut & paste from the kobo website. For whatever reason neither kobo nor Literati shows that 2.0 is the latest version. Probably too busy working on the new Literati to worry about this one.
Ophysette 03-20-2011, 02:44 AM Thanks, Meemo, Curtw, will thry the suggestions.
BoomerM3 03-20-2011, 11:20 AM I am using the Literati to read borrowed public library books (Overdrive). Books are downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions on my notebook, then to the Literati.
Digital Editions shows the expiration date of the loan - but I am not able to find that date once the book has been transferred to the Literati. I need to refer to my notebook to see when each book is due.
Is there some place on the Literati where the due date / expiration date is available.

Glad you like your Kindle. They are very different products. When last you posted about your Literati you were very happy with it on the 22nd of April. I guess something else went wrong.

TonyTerra 07-08-2011, 02:39 PM I have just purchased a literati from winners for $42.00 at that price I decided it would be useful for reading magazines and books with color pictures,I find it clumsy to use but for $42.00 cheap. To loaded books etc I have been using what I consider one of the worlds best interfaces CALIBRE it was a little hesitant at first but finally recognised the reader and successfully loaded some magazines in various formats. As far as the internal capacity it only shows approx 200mb but will accept a 8gb SD card. This reader does not compare with my sony 505 or 950.but wil save me from lugging the ipad arround.
eSheri 07-15-2011, 01:00 AM TonyTerra, yes at $42 i would have picked one up also. i also would agree with leaving the big boys home and taking the cheaper Literati. You won't have to worry about it being tossed to and fro, etc. Enjoy! :)
coinín 08-05-2011, 11:51 AM The charger for my Literati kicked the bucket a few days ago; got to give Kudos to their customer service, a quick phone call and there's one in the post for me minutes later.
I don't love my Literati the same way as I do my Kobo, but it is useful at times for the color images and night reading mode. I'd be sad to see it die because it couldn't be charged.
clittle 08-05-2011, 12:28 PM It's amazing, in a good way, that they are still supporting the Literati!
It was apparently dumped on the market at bargain basement prices. I was convinced it was a close out; and that they'd be glad to be rid of it.
Yet they continue support.
Kudos to the company behind it.
Are they planning an updated unit? With such good support, I'd be inclined to buy the new product if, and when, it's released.
catiebug 08-15-2011, 08:05 AM I don't know if they're planning a new release or not, but they were back on the shelves at my local Kohl's for ~$130 yesterday!

That is amazing. Kobo writes the code for this device so they would be the ones to do a new release but this does sound promising. It is a good device. It seems that too many jump in to the fray and then abandon quickly even when they have good devices. I guess they expect to jump to first place in a month!

I spoke too soon...
Turns out my reader has bigger issues than just the charger, and the Literati support has informed me that there is NO WARRANTY for the device, and they will not repair or replace. When I said there are plenty of reports online of people getting repairs or replacements right up to two months ago, I was told this is no longer happening and told to go to Sharper Image for refund/replacement.
Spoke to Sharper Image, who directed me back to Literati, who once again refused to help. I've emailed Kobo, as the software powering the device comes from them, in hopes they can help. I'm not holding out high hopes, though.
It's a shame, really. It was a nice basic reader, and it was really useful for nighttime reading. Now I have an expensive paperweight with a keyboard.
bobfeland 08-30-2011, 02:01 PM We have 7 literatis functioning well in our family. We had some problems initially and after a couple of replaced units were crusin' along. Bwe careful to overcharge or undercharge the battery can cause problems. I have two granddaughters each 9 years of age who are having a delightful experience. If it weren't for the literati, I'd never have gotten into ereaders. We are having a great experience. Support has been very responsive.
acrc1969 09-21-2011, 04:48 PM Mine was bought on sale at Kohl's alot higher than the Ebay prices. Coinin jogged my weak brain and I contacted the BBB addy he provided. Alas even tho Merch promised replacement and call from tech support within 5 days it's been 7 got nada ,so I again contacted BBB today, not expecting much tho. It's so weird books are in unit but not on shelves and I can't even access thru computer. Shoulda known somethin was up when I looked in literature and the suggested cure was reset for the probs, guess when it was called for so often I shoulda had a clue
acrc1969 09-21-2011, 04:57 PM Hey Coinin just really read above post Kobo first told me couldn't help but then wanted a screen shot of the prob( no instuctions of how to get one ) I'm not mentally challenged nor tech savvy. I simply asked for the driver since it's Kobo powered, hoping it would put my books back on shelf. I never really cared that it wouldn't sync because I downloaded books to computer first and connected by cord. I called Sharper Image in NYC when I could not get a message thru on website and received a message on phone to call back within a 3 hour window (what crap).I finally got a tech who promised to send the box to ship for repairs(hell I woulda sent it in the orig. if they gave addy.No box yet,no replacement,No call
acrc1969 09-22-2011, 02:19 PM BBB came thru got a LOOKBOOK instead looks pretty much like a Literati got it on a charger, all the wires from Literati fit. Her's hopin it lasts a while
TonyTerra 09-23-2011, 02:09 PM Ref Montealan,
I must be one of the lucky ones,I purchased the literati for $42.00 Cnd plugged it into my desktop and it automatically loaded required drivers [ I have Windows 7 operating system] then linked me to the web site updated the latest software with no trouble whatsoever. I use it mainly for reading magazine and user guides and my only complaint is one has to enlarge the pages to be able to read them comfortably
caramelblessed 09-24-2011, 12:32 AM For the moment I still have a working Literati. My problem is I was given a Literati Case with the built-in battery. However, there is no manual with it so I don't know how to use it correctly. If anyone has one please help. My questions are: Can you plug the case in to charge the battery without the ereader in it or do you have to charge them together? If the case can be charged separately, how long for it to be fully charged? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

there is a built in manual for the eReader. I do not understand the Case with the built-in battery. Is this a different Literati than I have? Mine looks like the one in our wiki Literati. If you have this one you can just tap the menu and select help from the menu. It is context sensitive so it gives help in whatever screen you are on. You can also read it like a manual if you prefer by using the left/right arrow keys.

BlessedPsycho 09-28-2011, 02:03 PM Does anyone know of a good number to reach Literati at? Or anyone involved with them who does support? Here's the sitch:
Back at the end of July, my Literati stopped working. There were just black and white lines running vertical on the screen and pressing the "Reset" button did nothing to help. When I called their support #, I talked to a very nice woman who said it was a problem with the battery and needed to be replaced, which they would do at no charge. They sent a box to my house and said it would take 4-6 weeks for the replacement to arrive.
The FedEx tracking # I have says it was received by them on August 16th, and I've yet to hear anything back from them. I've tried 3 different #s for them but I seem to get redirected to the same line every time. It's the same message. There's a short "Welcome" message, a "your call may be recorded" message, followed by a brief stint on hold complete with Muzak, and then finally a "We apologize" message and a "please call back during peak hours" message, and "Goodbye". It goes exactly the same way each and every time.
I'd really like to know what's going on, but even Kobo is unable to offer anything but another number that directs back to the same line. It doesn't help that their website also seems to be down as well.
Numbers I've tried:
(866) 204-4714 (from Literati user manual)
(800) 481-7983 (from Kobo customer service)
(800) 374-2744 (from Sharper Image website)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have one of those charging covers as well. They didn't come with a manual and back when I bought it I tried to get some info on it from Sharper Image but had no luck. I haven't charged it for a while, but I used the Literati's USB cord and charged it from the computer. I have no idea how long it took to charge, just don't remember. The trick is to get the Literati seated right in the charger. It makes it a lot heavier, but it definitely keeps you from having to charge the Literati itself every couple of days.

BlessedPsycho 10-07-2011, 02:42 AM Thanks. I actually managed to get a hold of a live person the day after I posted that and everything's been sorted out now. I just my Literati back today, actually! But thanks for the help!
JudyV 01-15-2012, 09:31 PM I was advised to charge Literati the first time for 6-8 hours. I have been using Literati for over a year with no problem until I DID overcharge it a few times. Then the battery died. Now (with my new replacement) I keep a timer close by and charge it 2-5 hours checking for the full charge indicator now and then.
BIG HINT.... when you go to check it, it may still LOOK like it is not yet charged. Shut it down ... wait a minute and start it up again. More often than not it will then show it is fully charged. NEVER do as I did and leave it for 8 hours or more on the charger.
BlessedPsycho 01-30-2012, 06:27 PM Does anyone know how I would go about copying eBook files from the LookBook?
I got a Nook Color for Christmas and have basically abandoned my LookBook. However, I did purchase several books through the Kobo Store that are on there, and I'd like to be able to save them to my computer to be put onto my Nook.
Anyone know what system folder I should look under? Or if this can even be done? =S
JudyV 02-03-2012, 11:28 AM I use Adobe Digital Editions software to store all of my purchased books on my computer. It is free software that also stores and manages ebooks checked out from my public library.
This is free software that is very easy to use. When you have that software on your computer most ebook stores will recognize that as a place to download your new purchases to on your system.
Once ebooks (and I guess PDF books also) are stored in this software program, it is a simple matter to drag and drop a book into any of your ereaders, cell phone, laptops or similar hand held devices.
The device must be turned on before connecting it to the computer. Then open Digital Editions. Authorize the device (per instructions). Then drag and drop etc.
There are other software programs also available but this is the only one I use to move books between different devices. It also lets you have the books on multiple devices, even library books. And if I wanted, I could read the book on the computer itself with this program. The program comes with two classifications: all books and borrowed books. And you can also create libraries to store purchased books by various categories.
DBMaSter 02-04-2012, 12:19 AM The last time I called Literati support in November and December, I got Kobo Support and they were not supporting the Literati very well. They were pushing their own ereader and had no practical advice for me. The wireless aspect of the Literati no longer works. I turn on the wireless and it tries to connect then it turns the wireless off. I did the obligatory factory reset and that did not help at all.
On another note, to transfer ebooks to and from your ereader, regardless of the brand, I recommend using Calibre. It is an ebook management application that can read and convert books from one format to another. It is free and very good.

You could take a different approach by running CM7 on the Nook off a microsd card (no modification to the Nook Color needed) then downloading the Kobo App off Market and syncing through that app.
There are a hundred other reasons to do this that I won't go into here. Use a Sandisk card.
Google "Size Agnostic XDA" to get started.
