*PocketBook 360 Upgrade Manual*
_How to Upgrade Firmware of your PocketBook 360 E-Reader_

Important! Firmware upgrade is very important operation, that changes the controlling software of your electronic reader. In case it is performed incorrectly this software may be damaged and device might not function properly and has to be brought to the service center. Please, try to perform upgrade procedure as close to the steps in this manual as possible.

The latest firmware upgrade of your device can be downloaded from http://www.pocketbookreader.com/Downloads.html. This is a zip-file (archive), please unpack it on your computer. You will need a Micro SD or Micro SDHC memory card to upgrade your firmware.

*1.	Copy the upgrade image (file named SWUPDATE.BIN) to the root of your memory card.
2.	Insert the card into the cardreader of your device.
3.	Connect your PocketBook 360 to power supply (to power outlet with the help of the wall charger or a computer with the help of USB-cable). The device has to be connected to power supply during the whole process of the upgrade.
4.	Turn the device off.
5.	Holding the central button “OK”and simultaneously, holding the Upper Page button, press the “On/Off” button as if you were turing the device on. IMPORTANT: both “OK” and Upper Page buttons must be released ONLY after the message «Firmware update» appears on the top of the display.
6.	The programm will check the upgrade file image. In case it is succesfull, the display will show «Press center key to start update».
7.	Press the center “OK” key. The upgade process takes about 2 minutes. After it is finished, the display will show the following message «Upgrade OK. Now please reset the device».
8.	You don’t have to manually reset your Pocketbook 360, as it resets automatically.
9.	Turn the device on. Make sure that the latest firmware on your PocketBook 360 is installed. To check this, please go to Settings - Information about device - Firmware Version.*

You can delete SWUPDATE.BIN file from you memory card after you finish the upgrade.

_Possible errors_:

*No upgrade image found *– file SWUPDATE.BIN can not be found on the Micro SD card. Make sure the file is in the root directory of the card. Try to format your Micro SD card (make a reserve copies of all its content prior to formatting) and copy the file to the root of the empty card. If this error persists, use another card.
*Please connect power cable *– power supply is not connected. Make sure the USB-cable is securely connected to the wall charger or the computer.
*Upgrade image is corrupted or Image is empty* – SWUPDATE.BIN file is damaged or there is no space available on the Micro SD card. Delete some files form your card and copy SWUPDATE.BIN file to it one more time. Repeat the fownload from http://www.pocketbookreader.com/Downloads.html. If this error persists, use another card.
*Firmware image is not for this device* – you are trying to use firmware for another e-reader/device. Download your PocketBook 360 upgrade from http://www.pocketbookreader.com/Downloads.html
*File read error* – try using another Micro SD card
*Flash write error, sector N* – the firmware was written to the device’s memory incorrectly. Try to do the upgrade one more time. If this error persists, please call your nearest service center to correct this error.

Hello together,

I could not find any pictures of an open Kindle 2 international - the main thing I was interested in is if there is a SIM card inside or not? Today I was fed up googleing and opened a K2i.

Pictures (not so good though) can be found here (https://www.lavalite.de/2009/11/22/pictures-of-an-open-kindle-2-international/).

Cheers,
Torben

PRS-600 Where to get a PRS-600 in/shipped-to Spain?

Hello,

I'm really excited about getting the PRS-600. It isn't exactly what I'm looking for, but, as they've already told me, such a thing doesn't exist. So, the PRS-600 looks featured enough and within my price range.

My problem now is: How do I get it in/shipped-to Spain (more precisely Barcelona)?

Thanks for your help!

Registering the DX in Canada

Here's an interesting issue for Canadian DX users; while one can register the DX with Amazon, the owner cannot register the DX to themselves. By that I mean the user cannot assign the Kindle to them personally (have their name at the top of the device). As well, one cannot access the "Settings" menu until the Kindle is personally registered and it can't be done with Amazon's help via USB. While Amazon support has been superb, this is a technical glitch that may be only one of many because we cannot access all the great features the DX has to offer. One solution to the above would be go to where there is slop-over coverage from the States (Niagara Falls or Windsor for me) and register it that way. If anyone has a solution for this, I'd for one would be grateful.

300 (5") screen EASY and FAST for reading!

There seems to be a *misconception *that the 300 isn't as good for fast readers because the screen is smaller. As I noted a while back, the 300 has about 5/6 the amount of text per line and 5/6 the number of lines per screen as on a comparable 6" screen. This leads to 2/3 the amount of text per screenful, or 50% more page turns.

OTOH, I find (after long reading sessions) that *the 300 is a bit easier on the eyes*--my eyes don't have to scan across longer text lines, and can stay more centered as I work my way down the page. I believe that I actually read a bit faster on the 300 than on the 500/505 with larger screens. And timing the page turn when I hit the last line doesn't slow things down one bit.

So, I think (after a lot of reading on both 5" and 6" ebook devices) that reading on the 5" screen is just as fast as on the 6" screen, if not faster, and is easier on the eyes in the long run. This is the same effect that makes it easy to quickly read narrow newspaper columns by basically tracking down the center of the column, where your eyes barely move left/right to catch the entire short line of text.

Funny, I see so many people here saying the 5" screen is "too small" and they wouldn't want one, after just looking at one in a store (or even just reading the specs!). But I have not seen a 300 owner here suggest that the 5" screen is too small or that it slows down the reading process. (I may have missed one such comment here, if it exists!)

My opinions are based on extensive first-hand experience. And I think it is disturbing that so many people here make such comments against the 5" screen, dissuading others who are considering one, without having really spent a lot of time using one. :(

Hello there. I currently own a PRS-700. I am from Canada, which does support the Sony book store, but I am currently living in Japan, which does not. I do know that when I first purchased my e-reader I could buy books off the store, however when I try to do so now, it says my credit card is no longer registered.

Furthermore, when I try to re-register my card it gives me a message that I am sending information overseas and therefore cannot do so.

Furthermore, when I got my brother to download and register my card from Canada, it still didn't show up on my computer here.

Any ideas as to what I can do? Does anyone know how I can get around this rather annoying problem?

Now that the blush has worn off the rose, I've come to some conclusions about the jetBook and ebook readers in general:

1) For just reading text in daylight conditions, the jetBook is the best thing I've seen. The presentation of pictures is also surprisingly good.
2) The additional utility functions (file management, SD card support, search, dictionaries) of the jetBook also seem to me to be best around in dedicated readers. I could never accept a less-capable device.
3) The grace notes in the software are poor to nonexistent. The presentation layer/renderer/formatter especially leaves a lot to be desired. Only two, sans-serif fonts? Really? They're joking, right?
4) At the very least, there should be a way to follow hyperlinks in the file types that support them. Hello, Tables of Contents, people! Think!
5) My ancient Dell X51 PDA is still a superior ebook reading solution for anything except strong light. This is because of the general-purpose nature of a computer vs. an appliance. I can choose a variety of software to use for presenting the ebook. File management is vastly superior, though the jetBook is adequate. If the Dell's keys and screen digitizer weren't on thier last legs, I'd probably still be using it exclusively.
6) That being said, backlit transflective LCD screens like the Dell suck in bright light.
7) My 2.8" display smartphone is inadequate for reading. It's just too cramped. The 3.5" display on the Dell works fine. The 3.2" screen on my old Aero 1550 was fine as well. I'm inclined to say that's the breakpoint. A 3.2", 320x240 screen is the minimum size for me. Bigger is likely better, up to the point the device is too bulky to carry around. 5" (the jetBook) is OK in that respect. Bigger than that, and I'll just use the laptop. 17 inches and the power supply of an Escalade hybrid works for me. :)

The next time around (in a year and a half or so), I'll either get a large (3.7"?) display smartphone, or go back to a 3 device combination: dumb phone, PDA, daylight ereader. Assuming Ectaco updates their firmware to keep up with the Joneses, I'll probably stick with the jetBook for the daylight ereader.

Jack Tingle

Nintendo DSi charger compatible to Kindle 2?

Hello together,

even after googleing a lot, I am still not sure if a Delock charging cable 82444 (http://www.delock.com/produkte/suche/Delock_Charging_cable_USB_20_5_x_iPhone_+_Nintendo_+_PSP_82444.html) would be compatible to a Kindle 2.

The cable has mini-USB, micro-USB, iPhone connectors... which would let me get rid of the many other cables I am using at the moment.

The Delock says it would fit to the Nintendo DSi. Both the Nintendo DSi and the Kindle 2 seem to provide a type B micro USB connector, so physically the plugs will probably fit.

What I didn't find out - is the Nintendo DSi plug wired normally or did they use some proprietary cabling?

If any of you owns a DSi and has already tried to charge the Kindle with the DSi's cable I would really appreciate to hear about it.

Thanks a lot and best regards,
Torben

What I didn't find out - is the Nintendo DSi plug wired normally or did they use some proprietary cabling?

If any of you owns a DSi and has already tried to charge the Kindle with the DSi's cable I would really appreciate to hear about it.

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Table of contents and time question

I have a PRS 505 bought recently from the UK, which I think has a different firmware to the US (but I may be wrong here).

I have two questions and hope someone is clever enough to be able to help me out.

Question 1 - In the 'table of contents' part of the reader menu is it possible to configure the reader so that the text size is always the same instead of showing short titles in large text and longer titles in smaller text? I would prefer all the titles to be shown in the smaller text because I think it looks nicer.

Is there any way to do this? Would it mean changing my firmware? I don't know how to do this but will be happy to give it a go as long as it doesn't brick my reader.

Question 2 - It would be really nice to have the time displayed on the bottom right of the screen where it shows battery power on the left and page number in the middle. I can't find any option for this in the utilities and I think this is a great oversight since the reader keeps track of the time in the system. Is it possible to display this?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

My Review of Astak 5" Pocket Pro

I was torn with the B&N Nook, Sony PRS300 and Astak Pocket Pro. But I choose Astak because it has expandable memory, replaceble battery, supports lots of formats, and for it's price. Sony got the price but without the expandable memory, replaceable battery and lots of formats. And Although Nook has expandable memory and replaceable battery, it doesn't have the supported formats I want and the price is $60 more. The price might not matter (if you keep on thinking about it not to matter Hehe) but this is just my first dedicated ereader. So, Astak it is. My Astak Pocket Pro was ordered on Nov 7 and I received it Nov 13, Friday 2PM. So I have this device for just 10 days since it's Nov 22nd now. My take is this:

When I opened it I charged it first eventhough I want to play with it right away I have to resist. It says to charged it for 12 hours but it finished charging after 4-5 hours. There's a light indicator on top left hand corner. Then I hook it up on my PC so I can delete the chinese manual on it after that I upgraded the firmware. I deleted the chinese manual so that I wont have an error in Calibre as what other users said here in the other thread. But I still had an error message but it's a different error, more on that below. Since I've had it on Nov 13, I still have'nt recharged it. It still has 3 bars of battery on it. I already finished reading 4 books on it.

*Inside the box:*
-Classic Maroon 5" EZ Reader Pocket Pro
-Battery which is already put in my EZ Reader Pocket Pro
-Leather Book Cover
-User Manual
-1 small screw driver to open the back to get to the battery
-USB Cable
-Wall outlet charger/AC Adaptor
-Wrist strap
-Headset
-2GB Kingston SD Card with 400 free ebooks

*Physical Appearance*:
*Screen*
It's very good. Text is crisp and sharp. No glare. If you're out in the sunlight to read, it's very, very comfortable. If the font is small you can just increase the size, for a comfortable read. If you're indoors the background looks a little darker, but I guess it's because of the lighting. But with my LED Book Light, it's very clear and white. There is hardly no strain in your eyes.

*Buttons/Controls*:
It's good. But you have to really push it sometimes. Or wait for the light indicator to stop before you could push another button. It has numbers 1-0 buttons, thumbwheel, power switch, the round back and menu buttons. 6 is for bookmarks, 7 for catalog if your ebook supports it, 8 for zoom, 9 for previous page and 0 for next page. There's also a control from the left side for turning pages and on the right side the thumbwheel controller for turning pages though you can't use it to scroll through in the menu. The power key on top can be use to lock the keypads. At the back, there's a reset button. I only reset it once since I have it.

I love where they put the page turner because its easy for you to read and turn pages whether you use your left hand thus using the left side functions for turning pages, thumbwheel controller if you're holding it on your right hand or the number 9 and 0. Page turning is pretty fast, and I got used to the flash everytime it changes page.

*Look and Feel*:
The maroon color is not too bright a color that it will distract you when reading. I thought the color will be glaring but it's not. It has a nice rubberize feel to it. It's square looking but very light. It's a little smaller than a paperback book. The paperback is just 1" longer than the EZ Reader Pocket Pro. It has a sturdy feel to it eventhough it looks quite generic for an ebook reader device.

*Specifications*
-Dimensions: 6"(L) x 4.1" (W) x 0.4" (H)
-eInk Vizplex Display with 600 x 800 pixel
-8 level grayscale
-internal memory of 512MB
-SD Card Slot supports upto 16GB storage
-Samsung Arm9 400MHz processor
-6 oz weight
-3.5 headphone jack
-Removable 3.7V Li-Polymer 1000mAh

*Syncing to the Computer*:
*Computer PC Vista*
It will easily see your EZ Reader as a Removable Storage Device and you can just drag and drop your ebooks to your device. The best thing I love with this is that you can organize your books by folders. All my books are organize by authors.

I love this folders very much because I don't want to dump and mix all my ebooks, for me it's too disorganized and I'm very OC when it comes to filing things neatly. The probs I have is that I have these ghost folders appear in my EZ Reader. I don't know why this is here I still need to find out why and how to erase it 'coz it won't appear if I hook it up in my PC so I could get rid of it(ghost folders). The ghost folders named FOUND.000, FOUND.001, and so on. And on the right side it says 0 directories 0 files. I can't erase it. If someone knows please help. :help:

*Using Calibre*:
I find that if I use the desktop of Calibre, they will see my EZ Reader as a BeBook Mini and the problem I have is that they have problems communicating. I'll get an error message, so what I did so I can use this program is open it with windows explorer and transferred organized ebooks done by calibre in my Calibre Library. And it works just fine.

*Using Adobe Digital Editions*:
When I first hook it up, it ask me if I want to authorized my device and computer. And I did that first. You need Adobe ID to do this. Just sign up/registered for one in adobe website. After that(authorizing your device) you will see below in your bookshelves your EZ Reader Pocket Pro. If you have your books already loaded in ADE, all you have to do is drag and drop it. I only used this with my DRM ebooks and borrowed ebooks from the library. To my non-DRM ebooks I just use my drag and drop in windows explorer. I was able to borrow books from the public library and transfer them to my device. It wasn't a breeze/easy to use though. It took me some time before I was able to transfer my ebooks using ADE. Also when I hook it up with ADE, ADE was really slow. It keeps on crashing, which I understand is not the devices problem.

*Supported Formats*:
It supports PDF, ePUB, PDB, FB2, DOC, T XT, HTML, LIT, PRC, MP3, WOL, CHM, PPT, TIF, PNG, GIF, RAR, ZIP, DJVU, JPG and BMP. Also support Text to Speech.

What I've tried of the format versions are these:
*PDF*
It reflows your .pdf files really good. There are just some .pdf files that is hard to read. From what I understand it depends on how the pdf files were saved. I have one pdf file that no matter how much I push the zoom, it wont zoom in because of how it was saved. But most of my pdf files does reflow it pretty nicely. You can read it in a 5" display really comfortably. Some .pdf files have none or 3 zoom levels, others have 5 levels of zoom.

*ePub*
This is by far the best reading format I tried next to mobi. It zoom in really nice, it have 3 or 5 levels to zoom.

*mobi/PRC*
I have 2 .mobi file and it read as great as ePub. I did'nt find anything wrong with it like some user experienced I read here in the forum. But since I only have 2 file of mobi I guess you need to see it for yourself.

*HTML*
It flows on your screen really good too. You can zoom it in like the above file extensions.

*TXT* and *Rich Text Format (RTF)*
Very Good, it has 5 levels of zoom in levels and the font style can be change too if you choose a different font style in settings.

*LIT*
It reads but it's too slow and sometimes it stops/freezes. Have to push back button for 10 seconds or turn it off then back on again. If you zoom in 3 times it automatically reads in landscape mode and I find it hard to turn the page if I read it landscape. If I push to turn the page in landscape mode the stop sign at the bottom right side near the battery icon appears.

*DOC*
I was surprised that this don't read well in EZ Reader PP. If you saved your file in a 10 font size, it's hard to read. Too small. You can zoom in 3 times but on 3rd level it will automatically read in a landscape mode like LIT format. And it's kinda hard to turn the page in a landscape mode, like LIT it gives the stop sign when I turn the page. I think it's a software glitch in EZ Reader PP and I'm hoping it(page turning in landscape) will be corrected. So if you want to read your ebooks in a .doc format you have to change the font size first to 18 or 20. A minor irritant but it'll do.

*.ASCM*
This extension files can only be read if you use ADE to transfer the ebooks to your device. It reads very nice and comfortable in your EZ Reader.

*JPG*
It display the picture or cover picture of the book really good. In black and white.

*Text-to-Speech*
It's okay. I rather read it myself than listen to a robotic voice. It just can't differentiate the present from past tense and some words were read wrong.

Haven't tried the MP3 yet and all other supported formats.

*Languages*:
There's a bunch of languages it supports but I only use English though. It has 25 languages here. These are English, Simple and Traditional Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, Polski, Romana, Slovensko, Svenska, Deutsch, Bulgarian, Catala, Czech, Greek, Estonian, Magyar, Italian, Russian, Ukrainian, Espanol, Turkish, French.

*Overall Impression*: Very Good. For a first time dedicated ereader device I owned it's very good. It has some minor glitch and irritations but it's doable. (I only have to reset it once.) If you're looking to buy an ereader device this is worth checking out to compare with other branded ereaders that is out in the market. Especially if you don't want to spend a whole lot of money on it. It can read all kinds of formats, have replaceble battery, expandable memory card, MP3 player, Text to Speech capability, Can organized ebooks by Multiple Folders and very portable. You can put it on your purse or jacket pocket very easily. Since I had it, I brought it with me wherever I go. All I can says is that I love it. :) I can have my DRM and non-DRM books together in an organized folder. And that's the key word: *Organized Folders*;)

*NOTE:* I only have this for 10 days so I still don't know what problems I might encounter with this device. This post is what I have experienced so far. Let's see what will happened after a few weeks or months. I don't know yet how durable it will be after months or even a few months of usage.

I downloaded PocketNews to sync RSS feeds to my 360. I run PN, then click on the RSS-news icon, update my existing RSS feeds, and then click on "Save news into book."
Although the 360 is plugged in and I can see it as a mass storage device in my Win XP computer, I always get the same error message: "Plug in the device."
